Looks like Apple’s Worldwide Developers Conference may not prove to be the Palm Pre killjoy some had been expecting (Note: Walt says otherwise). In dueling research notes today, Oppenheimer analyst Yair Reiner and Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster say that WWDC is likely to be something of a disappointment. Reiner doesn’t see Apple (AAPL) announcing new iPhones at the event for fear of upstaging its iPhone 3.0 and Snow Leopard operating systems. And Munster says that even if Apple does uncrate some new handsets — a “family” of them, he predicts — they won’t arrive at market until mid-summer. “Regardless of the debate surrounding the announcement of new iPhones (at WWDC or when Steve Jobs returns to the company), we continue to expect the new models to ship in July,” he writes. “We also continue to expect a family of iPhones to be released; 1) a low-cost version with lower capacity, the same camera as current iPhones, and possibly fewer software features, and 2) a high-end iPhone model in 16GB and 32GB versions with an upgraded video camera and new features for $199 and $299 respectively.”

Incidentally, Munster doesn’t put much stock in all this talk of a $99 iPhone and cheaper data plan, either. He speculates that a low-end iPhone might price out at about $149 and gives slim odds to the idea that AT&T will lower its data plan rates.

June 8. That’s the day Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference kicks off and the day the company is expected to uncrate its next-generation iPhone.

Could it also be the day after Palm rolls out its new Pre handset? The latest rumors suggest it is, positing June 7 as one of the release windows for the Pre and noting that the company is casting a viral video campaign slated to run through that month as well.

It’s an intriguing thought, but would Palm (PALM) really do such a thing? It seems doubtful. Certainly, debuting a handset as anxiously awaited as the Pre a day before Apple’s WWDC keynote would be a bold move that would generate no end of jawing in the tech media and beyond.

But only for about a day. Because 24 hours later all eyes and ears will shift to WWDC and they’ll be watching not just for the next iPhone but for this mysterious new tablet device we’ve been hearing about, as well and in who’s hands those devices may or may not debut. If Steve Jobs delivers the keynote and announces them, the media’s focus will be on his health, Apple’s future and these new devices. If he doesn’t, the focus will STILL be on his health, Apple’s future and these new devices.

So for Palm to launch the Pre on June 7 would be sheer lunacy. To do so would be to set itself up to have its most important product release in years washed away in a deluge of Apple (AAPL) coverage. Better to launch the device well in advance of the next iPhone’s expected arrival or after it than be subsumed in the iPhone/iTablet monomania that’s ramping up. WWDC is already sold out.

Oh, one last thing–an interesting side note. My last message to Palm’s PR head, Lynn Fox, was met with an out-of-office message explaining she’s away on vacation until May 11. Resting up for the big announcement, presumably, which–given her return date–may fall closer to the originally rumored May 17 drop date than thought.

Apple reported the best June quarter in the company’s history, for both revenue and earnings, Monday. So why the sudden plunge in share price? Seems concerns about cancer-survivor Steve Jobs’s gaunt appearance at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June have not subsided.

Apple reported the best June quarter in the company’s history, for both revenue and earnings, Monday. So why the sudden plunge in share price? Seems concerns about cancer-survivor Steve Jobs’s gaunt appearance at Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference in June have not subsided; nor are they likely to any time soon given the company’s response to them. Asked about Jobs’s health during Apple’s earnings call Monday, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer said it “was a private matter.” Predictably, that not-exactly-reassuring remark inspired all sorts of speculation about Jobs’s well-being, which, like it or not, is tied very closely to Apple’s company fortunes. “They have a longstanding policy to not comment on that matter,” explained American Technology Research analyst Shaw Wu. “They didn’t say anything new. But the answer didn’t give anybody confidence. And saying it was a ‘private matter’ didn’t help.”

Clearly.

That said, Apple (AAPL) seems to have recognized its misstep and is working to temper concerns over Jobs’s health. The New York Times reports that Jobs has been telling colleagues that he is cancer-free and that his gaunt appearance lately is due to nutritional issues arising from his cancer surgery. Finally, Apple does indeed have a succession strategy in place should Jobs step away from his current duties. Of course, that strategy is confidential, like pretty much every other aspect of Apple’s business.
