Here’s a data point to consider amid the tech sector’s mounting job cuts. According to a new study by the Ponemon Institute, many employees leaving their jobs aren’t above adding a little something to their separation packages: confidential corporate data. More than half of the 945 workers Ponemon surveyed–59 percent–who lost or left a job last year admitted to stealing confidential company data. The most commonly stolen pieces of information: customer contact lists that could be leveraged at a new job. The types of employees most likely to steal: those with a dim view of their former employers. “I’m not sure that malicious intent and future employment are mutually exclusive,” Larry Ponemon, chairman of the Ponemon Institute, told eWeek. “Clearly the responses show that obtaining future employment was a significant motivating factor, but when we see a high percentage of individuals who took information knowing full well they were acting in violation of company policy, that hints strongly at the presence of malice.”

Sacked.

1,000 managers and 5,000 contractors pink-slipped at Alcatel-Lucent (ALU)

Grim isn’t it? Sad thing is, this is just a simple snapshot of what’s been happening in tech. According to the Department of Labor, employers in the states shed 524,000 workers in December, 2.6 million in all of 2008. That makes the last year the worst for layoffs since 1945, when 2.75 million jobs were lost. And that’s frightening, because according to some experts, we’ll get no respite in 2009. “We are very early in the cycle,” Peter Morici, a professor at the Robert H. Smith School of Business at the University of Maryland told BusinessWeek, adding that we’ve so far only seen a sliver of the job losses to come. “We are going to see the fury of the Old Testament for what we have done to the economy.”

Oracle has apparently ushered in the new year with a bit of a bloodletting. Thomas Weisel Partners analyst Tim Klasell says the company has sacked some employees in sales and marketing. “Our sense is that the current reduction was well planned and not a hasty reaction to an unplanned event,” he claims in a research note issued today.

Actually, it seems quite systematic. “It’s part of the global cost-cutting move,” one Oracle (ORCL) employee tells The Times of India, which notes that 40 workers were just let go at the company’s Bangalore offices. “This is just the initial move and the numbers will definitely increase. By next week, we should get the actual figures.”

Now, word on the street has it that the figure in question here is somewhere around 8,000. But there’s no mention of Oracle in the latest EDD Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification list, which would seem to suggest that 8,000 figure is bogus. And according to our sources it is. We’re told that layoffs are occurring, but that their number is in the hundreds, not thousands.

AT&T joined the sad conga line of companies laying off workers, announcing on Thursday the elimination of 12,000 jobs. That’s roughly four percent of its workforce. The company cited “economic pressures, a changing business mix and a more streamlined organizational structure” as the rationale for the move. It expects to take a fourth-quarter severance-related charge of about $600 million.

Ugly news for the company’s workforce, which has already seen its headcount reduced by 4,600 this year as part of a reorganization of AT&T’s shrinking landline business.

Shares of AT&T (T), which have dropped by about 30 percent this year, slipped another 2.7 percent in pre-market trading.

As we look ahead and to position us for success in 2009, we’re continuing the work already underway to get fit as an organization: actively looking for ways to make process and structural changes to our business that will allow us to work more efficiently, with more scale. we’ve enlisted the help of Bain & Co. to work with the leadership team on identifying ways to leverage our strengths, and to improve and accelerate our performance.”

– Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang, Sept. 24, 2008

The new fitness program to which Yahoo CEO Jerry Yang referred in his last all-hands memo to employees is expected to begin Tuesday. Yahoo (YHOO) is to report quarterly earnings tomorrow and it will announce layoffs along with them. Sources tell The Mercury News that the company is planning to sack at least as many employees as it did in January, when it fired 1,000 of its 15,000 workers. That’s not the 3,000 to 3,500 number that had been rumored, as Boomtown foretold. But it’s ugly nonetheless. The cuts will likely be accompanied by a 15 percent reduction in operating budget. Clearly, those Bain & Company “personal trainers” Yahoo recently hired to help it trim down and shape up are already working their magic.
