New Dell Laptop Exceeds Military Specs for Durability, Ugliness
It can survive a three-foot drop and withstand water sprayed from a fire hose. It’s sea fog-resistant. It meets military specifications for thermal shock and explosive environments. And if you hit someone with it hard enough, you’d probably kill him. What is it? A Dell laptop, believe it or not.

Windows XP: Night of the Living Dead OS
Microsoft had planned to cut off sales of its Windows XP operating system through the retail and original equipment manufacturer channels on Jan. 30, 2008–one year after the Windows Vista debut. But the poor reception given Vista and the unwavering loyalty of XP users have forced the company to extend that deadline again and again and again.

Pent-Up Demand for Vista Apparently Still Pent-Up
An interesting metric for you: Of the products listed on Amazon’s Top 10 Bestsellers in Computers & PC Hardware, five are Apple MacBooks. One is an ASUS Eee PC running Linux. One is a Samsung HDTV monitor. And the remaining three are netbook/mini laptops running Windows. Windows XP Home, that is. None run Vista.

Windows Vistaster: The “Ow” Starts Now
Windows Vista may end up being the least-desired best-selling OS in the history of operating systems. New research suggests that more than one in three new Vista PCs is downgraded to Windows XP. Performance and metrics researcher Devil Mountain Software reports that its survey of over 3,000 Vista PCs revealed nearly 35 percent to be running XP

Windows Vista: There Will Be Dud
“Microsoft’s philosophy is to ‘do things better,’ ” Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates said at the D6 conference last month. “And Vista has given us lots of opportunity to do that.” Yes, Microsoft certainly has done just that. Actually, even more than you’d think, because as it turns out, the Chronic Vista Aversion Disorder that swept through the consumer population following Vista’s launch has also afflicted the developer community.
