But not that much more. Absent from <a href="http://blog.palm.com/palm/2009/04/the-webos-developer-community-leaps-ahead.html">his remarks Wednesday evening</a> was any news about the price of Palm&#8217;s forthcoming Pre handset or a hard-and-fast release date&#8211;two bits of information the industry has been pining for since the device was first announced in January. What Abbott offered up instead was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090313/pre-diculous/">a rehash of what it&#8217;s been telling us about the Pre for months now</a>, along with <a href="http://investor.palm.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=374872">three bits of minor news</a>.</p>
<p>The first: Palm, <a href="http://blog.wired.com/business/2009/04/rumor-palm-to-r.html">as was rumored</a>, is <a href="http://pdnblog.palm.com/?p=107">expanding its early-access program for Mojo</a>, the WebOS SDK. The second: The company is introducing a new set of integrated cloud services, called Mojo Messaging Service, for developers. From the official announcement:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;The Mojo Messaging Service is an elegant, standards-based way to exchange information over the Internet. When new information is available, it is &#8216;published&#8217; to the cloud and all interested parties who are subscribers are notified that new information is available. This will allow developers to push live content to their applications or services. The Mojo Messaging Service initially will have a limited feature set and service level that will evolve over time.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>And the third,<a href="http://www.precentral.net/webos-support-palm-os-emulation"> as was also rumored</a>: Developer MotionApps has written an emulator called <a href="http://www.motionapps.com/classic/">Classic</a> for the Pre that will allow users to run more than 30,000 PalmOS apps on the device. Also from the official announcement:</p>

&#8220;Palm also announced that MotionApps (www.motionapps.com) is creating an emulator application that will allow most Palm OS applications to run on webOS devices. The application, called &#8216;Classic,&#8217; will be available for purchase when the Palm Pre phone becomes available from Sprint in the first half of 2009, and gives users peace of mind as they transition to Palm’s new webOS.</p>
<p>Since Palm OS applications running in Classic won’t be able to leverage core webOS functionality, Palm is working with partners to ensure that popular Palm OS applications are made available on the webOS platform and are optimized to take advantage of everything it has to offer. In the meantime, the MotionApps Classic application will allow customers who have invested in the Palm OS platform to use Palm OS applications they’ve grown to love and depend upon on their new webOS devices.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>Mildly interesting announcements, I suppose. Still, frustrating for those waiting for news that really should have been provided by now. What of pricing and availability information for the Pre? When will we be given that?</p>

<p>This year, the <a href="http://Oscars.com">Oscars</a> ceremony will remain decidedly low tech: There won’t be any live online streams where you can watch the 81st Academy Awards.</p>
<p>Because it’s easier to monetize eyeballs directed at television screens rather than computer monitors, your choices are limited to broadcasters <a href="http://abc.com">ABC</a> in the U.S. and <a href="http://movies.sky.com/the-oscars-2009">Sky</a> in the U.K.&#8211;and a big, fat nada for those who receive neither.</p>
<p>But seriously, who watches the three-hour-plus televised Oscars anymore anyway? Not many, apparently: Last year’s ratings were the lowest in history. This year, besides seeing if a probably singing-and-dancing <del datetime="2009-02-22T23:22:41+00:00">Wolverine</del> Hugh Jackman can entertain where so many before have failed, learning if your Best Picture prediction hit the mark, or even hoping to catch <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLXVuy0h29c">Christian Bale &#8220;Bale out”</a> (a term meaning to unleash an F-bomb-laden tirade&#8211;it&#8217;s even <a href="http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=Bale%20Out&#038;defid=3682199">defined in the urban dictionary now</a>) some poor unsuspecting red carpet usher, there’s not a lot of buzz around the event.</p>
<p>No, like any other big entertainment or sporting event, the awards ceremony itself is but a small part of the experience. The real fun goes on around the Oscars, in Web site predictors, mobile apps and other interactive technology.</p>
<p><strong>Tracking the Winners</strong></p>
<p>Sites like <a href="http://www.awardsdaily.com/">Awards Daily</a> put up Oscar predictions, including a <a href="http://www.awardsdaily.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/02/sultans-chart-2009e.gif ">table gathering the guesses</a> of a group of its writers and readers (caution: It might cause glazing-over of the eyes).</p>
<p>But Awards Daily also has tracked the other awards the Oscar nominees have won in the past year, including the Golden Globes and BAFTA. This will provide some helpful research for when you go to fill in your <a href="http://oscars.nytimes.com/ballot/best-picture">Oscar ballot at the New York Times</a>, where you can compete with others and have your card scored in real time. And <a href="http://oscars.movies.yahoo.com/">Yahoo</a>, conducting a poll, shows the movies favored to grab the little golden man by percentage of user votes.</p>

<p>Meanwhile, &#8220;Colbert Report&#8221; host Stephen Colbert gave his own predictions earlier last week using what he calls <a href=" http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/218733/february-12-2009/the-dacolbert-code---oscar-predictions">DaColbert Code</a> (as in the DaVinci Code). His ability to “see patterns” consists of using a word/name association game. For instance, starting from last year’s Best Actress Marion Cotillard, he arrives at a Kate Winslet prediction through a series of phrases, including “rice pilaf,” “Clockwork Orange” and “Malcolm X.” Hey, everybody’s got a system, so nobody said it had to be a good one.</p>
<p>And for the truly devoted, or those who are just more interested in the fashion than the films, People.com has put up a <a href="http://www.people.com/people/package/gallery/0,,20168763_20178835,00.html">Predict-a-Gown photo quiz</a>. Will Cameron Diaz wear the White Valentino or the Black Oscar de la Renta? You see, these are the critical questions we need to be asking, and only the good folks at People were brave enough to ask them.</p>
<p><strong>Mobile and Web 2.0</strong></p>
<p>iPhone’s App Store has some popular Oscar apps like the “Awards: Oscars Edition” and “Hollywood Trivia: The Oscar Quiz,” which provide all sorts of fun interactive functionality in ballots, games and history. See a list of the top apps at <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/02/19/watching-the-oscars-theres-an-app-for-that/">VentureBeat</a>.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, if you want to tap into the Bollywood fanbase, especially inspired by the many nominations for &#8220;Slumdog Millionaire&#8221; this year, go to <a href="http://Saavn.com">Saavn.com</a>, which is hosting a Bollywood-Facebook widget. The widget tracks the Facebook status updates of users talking about the Oscars.</p>
<p>And of course, what Web 2.0 party would be complete without Twitter? Use either #Oscars or #aa09 when searching for relevant updates. You can also subscribe to @watchwithcomics, a group of comedians who will be live-Twittering the event. One recent update there was “10 People Who Would Be Better Hosts than Hugh Jackman,” which included “Wolverine” and “Mini-Chris Brown and Mini-Rihanna.” Wow, these guys aren’t joking around.</p>

<p>Super Bowl XLIII is nearly upon us, multimillion dollar ads in tow, and since there&#8217;s never been as much video, connectivity or interactivity as there is right now, the whole thing is shaping up to be quite the Web 2.0 extravaganza.</p>
<p>From YouTube to Twitter to Facebook and beyond, here&#8217;s your guide to all the digital venues available to view, vote on and even interact with in this year&#8217;s lineup of ad campaigns.</p>
<p>There is no shortage of sites on which to watch (and rewatch, again and again) the ads: <a href="http://www.nbc.com/super-bowl/">NBC</a>, the game&#8217;s official broadcaster, <a href="http://www.spike.com/superbowl">Spike</a>, <a href="http://www.youtube.com/superbowl">YouTube</a>, and <a href="http://www.hulu.com/superbowl">Hulu</a>, to name just a few (see below for a list). Many of these sites have already aggregated a number of previews and will allow you to vote for your favorite commercials or rank them.</p>
<p>Speaking of Hulu, the video site has created a <a href="http://www.hulu.com/superbowl">customizable Super Bowl ad widget</a> that will allow you to display and vote on the ads and can be embedded into Web sites or blogs. The Hulu folks have also been spreading some talk about how they will <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13577_3-10150197-36.html">&#8220;reveal the secret behind Hulu&#8221;</a> during Super Bowl Sunday. Really, Hulu? We are sweating in anticipation (not).</p>
<p>Many of the companies whose ads will be featured during the game also have content on their corporate Web sites. Some&#8211;like the Orlando Sentinel&#8211;are playing coy, releasing only <a href="http://www.orlandosentinel.com/video/?autoStart=true&#038;topVideoCatNo=default&#038;clipId=3386107">teaser clips</a> about their actual ad&#8211;essentially creating a commercial about a commercial. It has something to do with a kid in a cape, accompanied by some very somber background piano music.</p>
<p>Others have already released full versions of their ads online. Internet domain company <a href="http://www.godaddy.com">Go Daddy</a> has put two titillating ads up on its site starring sexy race car driver Danica Patrick, fresh from her big debut last year. The company will also feature Internet-only ads with a more salacious spin on the made-for-TV ones.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, sites like <a href="http://www.spotbowl.com/">Spotbowl</a> and <a href="http://www.superbowl-ads.com/">Superbowl-Ads</a> have aggregated lots of information about the commercials. Spotbowl has collected industry rumors and reports and boasts a fairly detailed list of all of this year&#8217;s ad sponsors, noting the type of commercial(s) each will play and behind-the-scenes information on many of them.</p>
<p>Superbowl-Ads presents perhaps the most complete Web 2.0 package, which will not only feature the commercials online, but has established a Facebook and Twitter presence as well. <a href="http://www.facebook.com/pages/superbowl-adscom/29851893666">Its Facebook site</a> features much of the same content as the site, but also has a video viewer, news tracker apps and discussion board.</p>
<p>And you can even befriend the famous Etrade Baby, who will make another appearance this year. <a href="http://twitter.com/etradebaby">Find him on Twitter</a> under &#8220;etradebaby,&#8221; although he hasn&#8217;t had much to say so far. At the time of this writing, his most recent, and rather cryptic, message was, &#8220;I have very little time or patience for clowns.&#8221;</p>
<p>You can also follow Superbowl-Ads on Twitter under &#8220;superbowlad,&#8221; or search #superads09 and #sb43ads for a constant stream of relevant links, information and chatter leading up to and going into the big game.</p>
<p>Meanwhile, Forrester analyst <a href="http://www.web-strategist.com/blog/2008/02/02/hey-armchair-critics-rate-the-superbowl-ads-this-sunday-using-twitter/">Jeremiah Owyang will be conducting a &#8220;TwitterBowl&#8221; experiment</a> during the game whereby you can send in your votes to @superbowlads (with an &#8220;s&#8221; at the end), commenting on the ads and giving each a rating of up to five stars.</p>
<p>Even iTunes is in on the party this year, as you&#8217;ll be able to download original music from Pepsi&#8217;s SoBe Lifewater ad. Said commercial is one of the few that will be shown in 3-D, <a href="http://hdguru.com/tips-on-viewing-superbowl-xliii-in-hd/350/">provided that you&#8217;ve picked up your new 3-D glasses</a>, since the old red-and-blues won&#8217;t do the trick, apparently.</p>
<p>So digitally speaking, you&#8217;re all ready for the big game. That is, unless, you were looking for actual information about that big game, in which case you&#8217;d probably do better somewhere else.</p>

This morning the struggling Franco-American network supplier said it plans to<a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/alcatel-lucent-cut-1000-jobs-strategic/story.aspx?guid=%7B34D52BA6-4FC5-4331-B745-A96A43B28610%7D&amp;dist=msr_8"> sack 1,000 managers and 5,000 contractors</a> in a bid to bring down costs. &#8220;The new management team is committed to rapidly executing this new strategy and leveraging the new streamlined organization,&#8221; CEO Ben Verwaayen said in a statement. We are focused on delivering results and restoring profitability.&#8221;</p>
<p>This latest swing of the ax brings total job cuts at Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) to about 22,500 since the 2006 merger that created it. And though the company will be leaner and meaner for it, that new found agility won&#8217;t count for much without a shift in business strategy bold enough to reverse the brutal reduction in market share and market capitalization Alcatel-Lucent has suffered. And an oblique and, frankly, baffling mention of Web 2.0, does not a business strategy make.</p>
<p>Alcatel-Lucent&#8217;s plan is to &#8220;combine the trusted capabilities of the network environment with the creative communications services of the Web (Web 2.0, Web 3.0 and beyond).&#8221; <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=11208">What the hell does that mean?</a></p>

<p><strong>Election 2008</strong><br />
Whether or not those <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081024/sequoia-announces-voter-consternation-drive/">voting machines</a> malfunctioned or miscounted votes, Barack Obama was set to become the 44th President of the United States, much to the chagrin of comedians like Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who&#8211;since the beginning of the McCain/Palin partnership&#8211;were handed once-in-a-lifetime material. Between the brilliant &#8220;Saturday Night&#8221; Live parody sketches of (and by) both <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081019/sarah-palin-plays-sarah-palin-on-snl-nails-it/">Palin</a> and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081102/john-mccain-scores-on-qvc-oops-snl/">McCain</a>, and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081105/the-mccain-and-obama-speeches-gracious-both-in-defeat-and-in-victory/">Obama&#8217;s victory speech</a>, the other big winner (by a mile) was Google&#8217;s (GOOG) <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081106/another-obama-winner-youtube-of-course/">YouTube</a>. All 500 video versions of the speech generated nearly seven million views. It doesn&#8217;t beat the nearly-naked Britney Spears, with over nine million views, but one can dream.</p>
<p><strong>Yahoo</strong><br />
This week, Yahoo (YHOO) was kind of like a high school senior with a prom night dilemma: Since Microsoft (MSFT) backed out of acquisition negotiations earlier this year, Steve Ballmer insists there&#8217;s <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081107/steve-ballmer-to-jerry-yang-im-not-buying-you/">no deal</a>, but there&#8217;s a lot of back-and-forth that makes BoomTown wonder. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081105/google-dumps-yahoo-which-should-come-as-a-shock-only-to-yahoo/">Google backed out</a> of the much-discussed search ad partnership with the company after the DOJ made it clear that it was not going to happen without a fight. The also-much-discussed merger with Time Warner&#8217;s (TWX) AOL has <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081106/if-aol-is-amherst-and-yahoo-is-yale-why-arent-they-giving-the-merger-the-old-college-try/">not fared much better</a>. According to BoomTown, where you&#8217;ll find the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081105/sorting-out-fact-from-fiction-at-yahoo-the-telenovela-edition/">straight dope</a> on all of the rumors, all of this (for starters) has turned CEO Jerry Yang into the Internet&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081106/meet-the-internets-human-pinata-jerry-yang/">human pinata</a>.<br />
You know what they say: &#8220;Play hard-to-get and you won&#8217;t get got.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Econalypse</strong><br />
<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081106/news-corp-business-worse-than-we-thought-ad-weakness-catching-up-to-myspace/">Rupert Murdoch</a> admits business is worse than he previously thought. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081107/disney-online-ads-have-been-softening-for-a-while/">Disney (DIS) admits</a> that ad spending has been declining for more than a year. Does that make it official? Either way, reality sinks in further among the non-start-up set&#8211;Time Inc. is laying off hundreds and reorganizing the rest. Viacom (VIA) <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20081104/viacom-no-layoffs-yet-but-no-hiring-parties-either/">may or may not</a> have layoffs. Among the start-up set, as witnessed at the recent Web 2.0 conference this past week, companies are in <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081030/they-will-survive-silicon-valley-entrepreneurs-talk-downturn/">survival mode</a>, getting lean for the downturn. Well, not everybody. MySpace&#8217;s over-arching theme, judging from this <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081107/the-myspace-music-party-the-no-lionel-richiethey-still-wont-stop-believin-edition/">BoomTown video</a> of the giant&#8217;s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20081103/web-20-conference-this-week-lance-armstrong-al-gore-jerry-yang-mark-zuckerbergand-lionel-ritchie/">Web 2.0</a> party, is &#8220;Masque of the Red Death.&#8221; Party on, Garth&#8211;and have a pleasant tomorrow.</p>

<p>The answer&#8217;s obvious isn&#8217;t it? Salesforce.com CEO Marc Benioff. </p>
<p>Why? Because he says so, that&#8217;s why.</p>
<p>Speaking at the company&#8217;s DreamForce Europe event, Benioff said that Web 3.0 will be the Platform-as-a-Service (PaaS) era. A fascinating definition&#8211;convenient too, since this is precisely the sort of business Salesforce.com (CRM) is in. “We think Web 3.0 is now upon us. It’s the era of platforms,” <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/SAAS/?p=514">said Benioff</a>. “New platforms are coming right out of the cloud. It’s time to make a choice. You can continue to build your applications in the software model or you can move your applications to the new model of cloud computing. There is a new way to build your applications.”</p>
<p>So Web 3.0 is not, as Tim Berners-Lee, inventor of the World Wide Web, once suggested, <a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/2006/05/23/business/web.php">the semantic Web</a>&#8211;&#8221;day-to-day mechanisms of trade, bureaucracy and our daily lives handled by machines talking to machines.&#8221; Rather, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071004/web30/">it&#8217;s Web 2.0 with another 1.0’s worth of marketing BS</a>. The &#8220;Whatever-I-Say-It-Is Web&#8221;&#8211;the &#8220;<a href="http://snltranscripts.jt.org/79/79fupdate.phtml">Al Franken Decade</a>&#8221; of the Internet age.</p>

<p>In remarks at the Westminster eForum on Web 2.0 this week in London, Jim Cicconi, vice president of legislative affairs for AT&#038;T (T), said the Internet will hit its capacity in 2010. &#8220;The surge in online content is at the center of the most dramatic changes affecting the Internet today,&#8221; <a href="http://www.news.com/ATT-Internet-to-hit-full-capacity-by-2010/2100-1034_3-6237715.html?tag=nefd.top">Cicconi said</a>. &#8220;In three years&#8217; time, 20 typical households will generate more traffic than the entire Internet today. We are going to be butting up against the physical capacity of the Internet by 2010.&#8221;</p>
<p>Clearly, some bigger tubes are in order here&#8211;$55 billion worth of them, according to Cicconi, who was quick to note that it will be companies like AT&#038;T footing the bill for them.  &#8220;There is nothing magic or ethereal about the Internet&#8211;it is no more ethereal than the highway system,&#8221; he said. &#8220;It is not created by an act of God, but upgraded and maintained by private investors.&#8221;</p>
<p>Ah yes, private investors. Like the ones who<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071120/nemertes-study/"> promised in the mid-1990s to provide fiber-optic connections to millions of households</a> across the country in exchange for some $200 billion in tax cuts? The ones <a href="http://www.teletruth.org/docs/SCANDALFINAL92006.pdf">who never delivered on that promise</a>, content to pocket direct tax credits of, on average, $2,000 per subscriber, without fulfilling their end of the bargain? Those investors?</p>

<p>That seems to be what Google (GOOG) has done with <a href="http://googleappengine.blogspot.com/2008/04/introducing-google-app-engine-our-new.html">App Engine</a>, a new service for developers who&#8217;d like to write and run their Web applications on the company&#8217;s infrastructure. With <a href="http://appengine.google.com/">App Engine</a> developers can establish their own little Google Labs outposts, building Google-friendly applications using Google&#8217;s own building blocks on <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/BigTable">the Google File System</a> and Google will handle <a href="http://radar.oreilly.com/archives/2008/04/app-engine-host-your-python-apps-with-google.html">the scaling and fail-over issues</a>.  </p>
<p><a href="http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/google-app-engine-launching-a-startup-gets-even-easier/">That&#8217;s a compelling proposition</a>&#8211;assuming you <em>want</em> Google to control your entire end-to-end development environment. And who wouldn&#8217;t these days? What better way to pique the search giant&#8217;s acquisitive interests than building a great big Web 2.0 sandcastle in its very own Web 2.0 sandbox? Who knows, you may be the next YouTube or, at the very least, the next <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20071009/google-jaiku/">Zingku or Jaiku</a>. And if it turns out that you are, how convenient would it be for Google to acquire you, <a href="http://www.scripting.com/stories/2008/03/30/whyWouldGoogleWebServicesC.html">as Dave Winer noted</a> a while back at Scripting News:</p>

There would be no retraining either, all the programmers in the companies they acquire would know how to work in the environment. Seems the VC community has finally had it with Web 2.0, its hobbies masquerading as businesses and start-up brands with a reclusive letter &#8220;e.&#8221;</p>
<p>To wit, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, one of Silicon Valley&#8217;s most prestigious venture capital firms, <a href="http://www.siliconvalleywatcher.com/mt/archives/2007/11/web_20_is_on_th.php">is reportedly no longer investing in Web 2.0 start-ups</a>. &#8220;We have absolutely no interest in funding Web 2.0 companies,” KPCB partner Randy Komisar recently told Silicon Valley Watcher&#8217;s Tom Foremski, adding that he&#8217;d recently told John Battelle, conference chair of Web 2.0 Summit, that the term is viewed with disdain in the VC community.</p>
<p>As the Globe and Mail&#8217;s Mathew Ingram notes, Komisar&#8217;s remark is for Web 2.0 devotees <a href="http://www.mathewingram.com/work/2007/11/05/kleiner-web-20-is-so-over-dude/">&#8220;a little like King Arthur telling you he’s really not that hot on the whole Grail thing any more, and you can stop looking now.&#8221;</a></p>
<p>It&#8217;s also more than a little ironic. Because, according to a report from Dow Jones VentureOne and Ernst &#038; Young, <a href="http://www.ventureone.com/ii/2Q07USFinancingPR.pdf">emerging Web 2.0 companies snared almost $1 billion in venture capital worldwide</a> in the first six months of 2007. That said, very little of it was from KPCB, which seems to have sat most of Web 2.0 out. &#8220;I’m personally not doing much in Web 2.0 at the moment,&#8221; <a href="http://www.venturebeat.com/2007/01/03/with-web-20-its-easy-to-get-muddled/">Komisar told VentureBeat</a> in January.  &#8220;I’m looking for more fundamental innovations. I’m less interested in the content and media fallout. There are no strong barriers to entry in Web 2.0. If by Web 2.0, you mean companies that build an audience to be monetized by Google, I am not actively pursuing them; though I should never say never. I’m not sure how long YouTube would have remained an independent business had they not been bought by Google. Google has an efficient search engine to monetize large audiences. If you’re creating Web 2.0 products and media, its tough to build anything of sufficient scale to remain independent&#8211;you are more likely to end up being a feature on Google, Microsoft or Yahoo.&#8221;</p>

It&#8217;s “PayPal meets MasterCard without the high fees,&#8221; says Leonsis, who claims Revolution will completely overhaul the online payments industry with its PIN-protected anonymous credit card and payments platform for social and instant-messaging networks.</p>
<p>But I suspect it&#8217;s going to take quite a bit more than that to unseat institutions like Visa and MasterCard, even with merchant fees of just 0.5%. </p>
