			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/iphonchina.jpg" alt="iphonchina" title="iphonchina" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28028" />Apple&#8217;s internationally coveted iPhone finally arrived at market in China last week and by <a href="http://thenextweb.com/2009/11/02/iphone-flops-china-guess/">most</a> accounts, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703294004574509181789222564.html">it’s debut was uncharacteristically muted</a>.  </p>
<p>There is &#8220;no sign of the sort of sellout reception that greeted the smart phone at its introduction in other countries,&#8221; The Wall Street Journal reported, adding that there were no lines for the iPhone at the Apple store in Beijing, the company&#8217;s only location in China. </p>
<p>Sounds like a lackluster launch, and with Apple (AAPL) and China Unicom, the only carrier authorized to sell the device in the country, declining to disclose sales figures, it’s difficult to argue that it was otherwise. It clearly wasn’t the rousing success to which we’ve become accustomed. That said, it probably wasn’t quite the bust it’s been made out to be, either. </p>
<p>Why? Well, consider this: <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=7795">There were launch ceremonies in 30 provinces</a>. To date, we’ve heard anecdotal reports from&#8211;as best I can tell&#8211;<a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703294004574509181789222564.html">one of them</a>. And while it’s admittedly concerning to learn that a China Unicom store in Beijing sold just 10 iPhones last Saturday, that’s just one store. The device was on sale in many, many others (1000, according to Apple COO Tim Cook) across 30 provinces and <a href="http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90778/90860/6799829.html">285 Chinese cities</a> in a nation with 710 million mobile-phone subscribers.  </p>
<p>Finally, while it’s true that the prices Apple and China Unicom are charging for the iPhone are heady, they’re not quite as bad as we’ve been led to believe. &#8220;I think the western media has misconstrued the iPhone pricing in China,&#8221; <a href="http://iphonasia.com/">Dan Butterfield, editor of iPhonAsia told me</a>. </p>
<p>“Nine out of 10 reports that I&#8217;ve seen have simply repeated the &#8216;too expensive&#8217; mantra,&#8221; Butterfield explained. &#8220;They then quote the contract free price point&#8211;4,999 yuan ($730) to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the iPhone 3GS. They argue that you can buy a gray-market iPhone cheaper and it has WiFi&#8230;.The truth&#8230;the gray-market price is marginally cheaper for those who want to go &#8216;prepaid.&#8217; But when you examine the full matrix of China Unicom price/plans, you quickly realize that you can save big by going on contract vs. prepaid (pay as you go). There are even four price/plans where your iPhone if free. The iPhone subsidy increases for those who opt for more expensive monthly plans.&#8221;</p>
<p>Butterfield elaborates: &#8220;Moreover, if you want to access &#8216;3G,&#8217; there is no good carrier option other than China Unicom. You can run at 2G speeds on China Mobile or China Telecom. But neither of these two networks support the chipset in iPhone. China Mobile runs TDSCDMA 3G and China Telecom runs CDMA2000 3G. So you are left with China Unicom&#8217;s WCDMA 3G&#8211;a world-standard 3G protocol fully supported by iPhone 3G/3GS. Why not go on contract and get a subsidized iPhone that is well below the &#8216;too expensive&#8217; (contract free) prices that the media is shouting about?”</p>
<p>And in the end, does it even matter? As Butterfield noted, an iPhone sale is an iPhone sale&#8211;whether it’s made by a gray-market vendor or an authorized one. And either way, it&#8217;s good for Apple.</p>
<p>So was the iPhone’s launch in China really a bust? &#8220;Probably not,&#8221; said Butterfield. &#8220;Was it a rousing success? Probably not. The truth is somewhere in the middle.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Well what do you know: China Unicom just coughed up some first weekend sales numbers for the iPhone and &#8230; well, they’re not much to look. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091103/chinese-iphone-sales/">The carrier sold just 5,000</a>. </p>

Or it is in Google’s case anyway. </p>
<p>Reporting <a href="http://investor.google.com/releases/2009Q3_google_earnings.html">third-quarter results</a> after market close Thursday, Google (GOOG) topped estimates, posting net income that rose to $1.64 billion, or $5.13 a share, from $1.29 billion, or $4.06 a share in the same period last year. Net revenue for the period ended in September rose nearly one percent to $4.38 billion. Excluding items, earnings for the quarter were $5.89 a share. Consensus estimates had been calling for $5.42 a share and $4.24 billion in net revenue. The chart below shows revenue sources within Google (click to enlarge).</p>

<p>Impressive. Seems paid clicks grew 14 percent compared to the same period last year, and four percent compared to the prior period. Cost per click was down six percent year over year, but up five percent sequentially.</p>
<p>&#8220;Google had a strong quarter&#8211;we saw seven percent year-over-year revenue growth despite the tough economic conditions,&#8221; said CEO Eric Schmidt. &#8220;While there is a lot of uncertainty about the pace of economic recovery, we believe the worst of the recession is behind us and now feel confident about investing heavily in our future.&#8221;</p>
<p>Good to hear. Google’s shares, which have already risen more than 50 percent in the past six months, are on another upward tear. They rose 1.82 percent to $539.27 on the news in after-hours trading.</p>
<p><strong>Earnings call highlights via <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/10/15/live-blogging-google-earnings-3/">The Wall Street Journal&#8217;s Andrew LaVallee</a>:</strong></p>

<p>4:32: Call starts. The cast is the same as last quarter: <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/execs.html#eric">Mr. Schmidt</a>, CEO; <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/execs.html#pichette">Patrick Pichette</a>, CFO; <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/execs.html#jonathan">Jonathan Rosenberg</a>, SVP of product management; and for the first time, <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/corporate/execs.html#nikesh">Nikesh Arora</a>, president of global sales operations and business development. But there&#8217;s a twist&#8211;they&#8217;ll be using Google&#8217;s moderator to vet questions with voters. They vote on &#8220;the most relevant questions,&#8221; which go to the Google execs, the operator says.</p>
<p>4:35: &#8220;While there&#8217;s obviously a lot of uncertainty about the pace of the economic recovery, we believe the worst of the recession is behind us,&#8221; Schmidt says.</p>
<p>He adds that Google now has the confidence to invest &#8220;heavily&#8221; in its future. &#8220;It&#8217;s all good news from our perspective, at least in looking at the quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p>4:37: Says &#8220;we want to really get to the perfect search engine&#8221; and that many advertisers would like to spend more with Google if the company&#8217;s product allow them to do that.</p>
<p>4:38: Schmidt says &#8220;we&#8217;re open for business in making strategic acquisitions, both large and small.&#8221;</p>
<p>4:39: It&#8217;s Pichette&#8217;s turn. &#8220;At a high level, we&#8217;re very pleased with our Q3 results,&#8221; he says. The quarter benefited from growth in AdSense for content and display initiatives.</p>
<p>4:41: U.S. revenue up 4% to $2.8 billion. U.K. revenue decline affected by foreign exchange as well as ongoing macroeconomic weakness, Pichette says.</p>
<p>4:42: Operating expenses rose from the prior quarter, mostly due to payroll, equipment and facilities-related expenses. </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the worst of the recession is behind us,&#8221; he says.</p>
<p>4:44: Brazil was a standout in Latin America, Arora says. We&#8217;re beginning to see signs of recovery in Europe and Africa, particularly Spain. In Asia, China performed strongly as an emerging market.</p>
<p>4:46: Looking at the display-advertising business, those have also shown strong results, he says. </p>
<p>On YouTube, new advertisers and partners are helping with monetization efforts. Ninety percent of the top 50 advertisers have run YouTube campaigns with successful results&#8211;recent examples include McDonald&#8217;s and Hewlett-Packard.</p>
<p>4:47: YouTube has signed deals with all four major record labels and several independent labels. Earlier today, Google announced a partnership with Channel 4 in the U.K., which will bring full-length programming to the video-sharing site.</p>
<p>4:48: Arora adds a personal shout-out to the sales team.</p>
<p>4:50: Rosenberg calls the new AdWords front-end one of the company&#8217;s biggest investments of the year. Advertisers have new reports, can run more efficient campaigns and can get new features faster thanks to the platform, he says.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/dellephone.jpg" alt="dellephone" title="dellephone" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-26195" />Gartner (IT) analyst Ken Dulaney says Google’s Android OS will claim 14 percent of the global smart-phone market by 2012, putting it ahead of Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone but behind Symbian, which currently runs on about half of all smart phones. </p>
<p>While this might seem optimistic for an OS that is found on less than two percent of all smart phones today, it’s not entirely unreasonable given the distribution deals Google (GOOG) has been lining up. Yesterday, the search giant announced <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091006/google-and-verizon-to-co-develop-android-devices-and-services/">a deal to bring Android-based devices to Verizon Wireless</a> (VZ). Now comes word that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703298004574459380459235704.html">Dell (DELL) is building an Android handset for AT&#038;T</a> (T). People briefed on the companies&#8217; plans tell The Wall Street Journal that the device is <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090817/dellephone-debuts-in-china/">similar to the one the PC marker has been showing off in China</a> and is scheduled to hit the market sometime in early 2010.</p>

<p>People familiar with the matter tell <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125470560542363315.html">The Wall Street Journal</a> and <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=aFNhVUpURvDo">Bloomberg</a> that Brocade (BRCD) is seeking a buyer and that both Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) and Oracle (ORCL) are among its potential suitors. No deal is imminent, but rumor that one might be coming was enough to spike Brocade’s shares some 15 percent.</p>
<p>It’s easy to see why Oracle and HP&#8211;and IBM (IBM) as well&#8211;might be interested in Brocade. The company&#8217;s portfolio of data-networking products and services would do much to help HP take on Cisco (CSCO). It would also give Oracle its own line of networking gear, <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=25381">fulfilling CEO Larry Ellison’s dream of offering customers complete systems as T.J. Watson’s IBM once did</a>. </p>
<p>That said, there are issues with both scenarios. As Oppenheimer &#038; Co. analyst Ittai Kidron explained in a research note this morning, an acquisition by Oracle would require the company to really commit to hardware as a long-term growth plan. &#8220;If the company truly plans to become a systems company (one-stop shop software/hardware), then Brocade would be a nice fit, especially including Sun Microsystems with no overlap,&#8221; Kidron said, adding, &#8220;we&#8217;re a bit in the dark on strategy here.&#8221;</p>
<p>And what of HP? That’s potentially far more problematic, what with equipment overlap and revenue implications. &#8220;Brocade would add the missing data center switch architecture as well as a strong presence in the SAN switch market,&#8221; Kidron explained. &#8220;That said, there would be massive overlap with HP&#8217;s ProCurve networking unit, which we believe would be disruptive. Also, IBM and EMC are 10% customers for Brocade and could be lost as customers (along with HP&#8217;s 10% business of Brocade).&#8221;</p>
<p>So will Brocade be tech’s next big buyout? </p>

Then he assigned an engineer to whip up a distribtued feature so the company would actually have something to sell when the ad appeared. Ten days later Bennett&#8217;s advertisement hit the trade press: &#8220;Oracle Announced SQL*Star,&#8221; it said. &#8220;The First Distribtued Relational DBMS&#8230;&#8221;</p>
<p>&#8220;The fact of the matter was Oracle didn&#8217;t have anything,&#8221; said George Schussel, the trade show promoter who had followed Oracle from the beginning. &#8220;But that was the way they worked. Everything was marketing, everything was image. You simply announced the product and then figured out later how to deal with it from a technological point of view.&#8221;</p>

<p>Not if you&#8217;re Oracle (ORCL), though. On Aug. 27, the company ran an advertisement in The Wall Street Journal and the Economist claiming that &#8220;Sun + Oracle is Faster&#8221; compared to a TPC-benchmarked IBM (IBM) system. &#8220;Oracle and Sun together are hard to match,&#8221; Oracle said in the ad. &#8220;Just ask IBM. Its fastest server now runs an impressive 6 million TPC-C transactions, but on October 14 at Oracle OpenWorld, we&#8217;ll reveal the benchmark numbers that prove that even IBM DB2 running on IBM&#8217;s fastest hardware can&#8217;t match the speed and performance of Oracle Database on Sun systems.&#8221;</p>
<p>A boastful claim. Thing is, at the time it was made, the Sun (JAVA)-Oracle system hadn’t yet been audited by the TPC. In other words, it was based on an unsubstantiated benchmark. <a href="http://www.tpc.org/letters/oraclefairuse/">And that didn’t fly with the TPC, which fined Oracle $10,000 and ordered the software maker to pull the ad</a>. &#8220;Oracle&#8217;s claim that it is faster than IBM using a TPC-C benchmark result it claimed would be announced on October 14, 2009 was not supported because Oracle did not have a TPC result at the time of publication,&#8221; the TPC explained in an official statement. &#8220;The TPC requires that claims based on TPC benchmarks must be demonstrable using publicly available data from official TPC benchmark results.&#8221;</p>

<p>That said,  <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125375705433136403.html">Nintendo is cutting the price of its Wii videogame system by $50</a> in hopes of growing the market for the popular device as we head into the winter holidays. On Sunday, the company will begin peddling the Wii at a suggested retail price of $199.99.   </p>
<p>The new price is the first reduction since the console launched in November 2006 and follows similar price cuts by two rivals, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090818/100-off-and-ps3-is-still-the-most-expensive-console-on-the-market/">Sony’s (SNE) PS3</a> and <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/press/2009/0827-pricedrop.htm">Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360</a>.</p>
<p>All three are hoping they’ll attract recession-addled gamers into the market, and according to Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, they’ve got decent shot at it. &#8220;Our data shows in the U.S. alone there are 50 million consumers who are interested in playing videogames but they haven&#8217;t yet done so,&#8221; Fils-Aime told The Wall Street Journal. &#8220;They are waiting for product innovation or a slightly better value.&#8221;</p>

<p>The move, which will be effective immediately upon its announcement, is quite a blow for Intel (INTC). Gelsinger had done stints as the company’s chief technology officer and as head of its research division. In <a href="http://www.oracle.com/features/suncustomers.html">a full-page ad</a> published in The Wall Street Journal today, the database giant made a very public commitment to all of them and told customers there’s no reason to consider jumping ship for IBM. &#8220;We&#8217;re in it to win it,&#8221; Oracle CEO Larry Ellison boasts in the ad. &#8220;IBM, we&#8217;re looking forward to competing with you in the hardware business.&#8221;</p>

And while it doesn’t really deliver the GUI enhancements we’ve come to expect from Apple (AAPL) and <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3258">some incompatibilities</a> are <a href="http://www.computerworld.com/s/article/9137033/Snow_Leopard_Which_apps_utilities_have_been_left_behind_">riling people up</a>, Snow Leopard’s under-the-hood improvements and price point appear to have struck a chord with critics. <blockquote class="memo"><p>Overall, I believe Snow Leopard will help keep the Mac an appealing choice for computer buyers, and I can recommend it to existing Mac owners seeking more speed and disk space, or wanting to more easily use Exchange. But I don’t consider Snow Leopard a must-have upgrade for average consumers. It’s more of a nice-to-have upgrade. If you’re happy with Leopard, there’s no reason to rush out and get Snow Leopard.</p>

But my thought is that Snow Leopard’s biggest feature is that it doesn’t have any new features, but that what is already there has been refined, one step closer to perfection. They just better roll out some new features next time, because the invisible refinement upgrade only works once every few decades.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>Here&#8217;s the thing about Snow Leopard, the single inescapable fact that hung over our heads as we ran our tests and took our screenshots and made our graphs: it&#8217;s $30. $30! If you&#8217;re a Leopard user you have virtually no reason to skip over 10.6, unless you&#8217;ve somehow built a mission-critical production workflow around an InputManager hack (in which case, well, have fun with 10.5 for the rest of your life). Sure, maybe wait a few weeks for things like Growl and MenuMeters to be updated, and if your livelihood depends on QuickTime you might want to hold off, but for everyone else the sheer amount of little tweaks and added functionality in 10.6 more than justifies skipping that last round of drinks at the bar&#8211;hell, we&#8217;re guessing Exchange support alone has made the sale for a lot of people.</p>

<blockquote class="memo"><p>Snow Leopard is Apple&#8217;s lowest-priced OS update in eight years. Granted, it&#8217;s a collection of feature tweaks and upgrades, as well as under-the-hood modifications that might not pay off for users immediately. But the price of upgrading is so low that I&#8217;ve really got to recommend it for all but the most casual, low-impact Mac users. If you&#8217;ve got a 32-bit Intel Mac (that is, one powered by a Core Solo or Core Duo processor), the benefit of this upgrade will be a little less. But for most Mac users, especially the kind of person who reads a Web site devoted to the subject, the assorted benefits of Snow Leopard outweigh the price tag. I&#8217;d pay $30 just for the improved volume ejection, the ability to create services with Automator, and the improvements to the Dock and Expos&eacute;&#8211;though I admit I&#8217;d pay slightly more to not have the misguided QuickTime Player X as a part of the package. If you&#8217;re a user who connects to an Exchange server every day, upgrading to Snow Leopard really is a no-brainer. For everyone else, maybe it&#8217;s not quite a no-brainer-but it&#8217;s awfully close. Snow Leopard is a great value, and any serious Mac user should upgrade now.</p>

So reports in the Yomiuri Shimbun and The Wall Street Journal that claim the three have decided to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&amp;sid=adh10Yltq0kg">consolidate their mobile-phone operations</a> aren’t wide of the mark at all. Such a move would eliminate overlap in product lines. And it would create a company second only to domestic industry leader Sharp, one that would have enough clout to expand into emerging markets like China. </p>
<p>But NEC, Hitachi and Casio are denying these reports anyway. Or rather, they’re denying that they’ve hammered out any sort of deal. &#8220;The media report out today is not something that the company has released,&#8221; NEC said in a statement. &#8220;It is also not true that we have made a decision regarding our cell phone operations.&#8221;</p>

<p>Looks like News Corp. was a little too optimistic when the company told investors in May that it expected a decline of around 30 percent in fiscal-year-adjusted operating income.</p>
<p><a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/News-Corporation-Reports-bw-1166774778.html?x=0&#038;.v=1">Reporting earnings</a> this afternoon, the publisher of The Wall Street Journal and this Web site<a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB124950479456808875.html"> instead posted a decline of 32.5 percent</a>.</p>
<p>And, to think, News Corp. lowered that forecast twice last fall.</p>
<p>Anyway, the company lost $203 million, or eight cents a share, in its fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue fell 10.5 percent to $7.67 billion, dragged down by a decrease in ad revenue and $403 million in impairment charges and $228 million in restructuring costs, both largely attributable to, ahem, &#8220;red-hot social networking site&#8221; MySpace.</p>
<p>For the quarter, News Corp. swung from $1.1 billion in net income a year ago to a  net loss of $203 million. Gruesome. Excluding items, however, it earned 19 cents a share, which beat consensus estimates by a penny. So there&#8217;s that.</p>
<p>&#8220;I think the worst may be behind us,&#8221; News Corp. Chief Rupert Murdoch said during a conference call with analysts. &#8220;But there are no clear signs yet of a fast economic recovery.&#8221;</p>
<p>Which is pretty much what he said last quarter as well. “I am not an economist…but it is increasingly clear that the worst is over,&#8221; <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090506/news-corp-the-economy-is-rough-and-so-are-our-earnings/">Murdoch said back in May</a>. &#8220;As you know, I have been uncharacteristically pessimistic in recent calls, though I would argue that it was a well-founded concern. But there are emerging signs in some of our businesses that the days of precipitous decline are done and that revenues are beginning to look healthier.”</p>
