Apple Challenges Woolworths Over Logo Similarities

apple_woolworthsthumbWoolworths Supermarkets describes its new logo as “an abstract leaf symbol” intended to represent fresh food. But to Apple, the stylized “W” looks far too much like its own namesake fruit, which could be problematic should the supermarket chain someday decide to peddle its own brand of consumer electronics. And so Apple is petitioning IP Australia, the local agency that governs trademarks, to reject the Woolworths application for the mark.

L’Oréal Unable to Do It eBay

tammy_faye_bakker_closeup_2005-750_750jpgCosmetics giant L’Oréal is 0-5 in its legal cases against eBay over the counterfeit perfumes and face creams listed on the auction site. Today the High Court in London ruled that eBay was “not jointly liable” for trademark infringements committed by its users, though it could do more to prevent them.

Google “Stole First and Asked Questions Later”

star-trek-datajpgTough break for Google. An Illinois software developer has sued the company, along with some four dozen others, alleging that they infringed on his trademark on the word “android.” Seems Erich Specht, who runs Android Data Corporation, holds the mark on the term “Android Data.”

IE 8 Team Nearly Finished Copying Safari 10.3 Feature Set

Apple’s Safari browser has offered “private browsing” since 2005, Firefox since 2006 (via the Stealther extension), and Microsoft’s Internet Explorer may soon offer it as well. Earlier this week, Natya Nadella, senior VP of Microsoft’s search, portal and advertising platform group, said the company is planning to give IE 8 a privacy feature for erasing search histories and the other data that browsers often log automatically.
