			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/iphonchina.jpg" alt="iphonchina" title="iphonchina" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28028" />Apple&#8217;s internationally coveted iPhone finally arrived at market in China last week and by <a href="http://thenextweb.com/2009/11/02/iphone-flops-china-guess/">most</a> accounts, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703294004574509181789222564.html">it’s debut was uncharacteristically muted</a>.  </p>
<p>There is &#8220;no sign of the sort of sellout reception that greeted the smart phone at its introduction in other countries,&#8221; The Wall Street Journal reported, adding that there were no lines for the iPhone at the Apple store in Beijing, the company&#8217;s only location in China. </p>
<p>Sounds like a lackluster launch, and with Apple (AAPL) and China Unicom, the only carrier authorized to sell the device in the country, declining to disclose sales figures, it’s difficult to argue that it was otherwise. It clearly wasn’t the rousing success to which we’ve become accustomed. That said, it probably wasn’t quite the bust it’s been made out to be, either. </p>
<p>Why? Well, consider this: <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=7795">There were launch ceremonies in 30 provinces</a>. To date, we’ve heard anecdotal reports from&#8211;as best I can tell&#8211;<a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748703294004574509181789222564.html">one of them</a>. And while it’s admittedly concerning to learn that a China Unicom store in Beijing sold just 10 iPhones last Saturday, that’s just one store. The device was on sale in many, many others (1000, according to Apple COO Tim Cook) across 30 provinces and <a href="http://english.people.com.cn/90001/90778/90860/6799829.html">285 Chinese cities</a> in a nation with 710 million mobile-phone subscribers.  </p>
<p>Finally, while it’s true that the prices Apple and China Unicom are charging for the iPhone are heady, they’re not quite as bad as we’ve been led to believe. &#8220;I think the western media has misconstrued the iPhone pricing in China,&#8221; <a href="http://iphonasia.com/">Dan Butterfield, editor of iPhonAsia told me</a>. </p>
<p>“Nine out of 10 reports that I&#8217;ve seen have simply repeated the &#8216;too expensive&#8217; mantra,&#8221; Butterfield explained. &#8220;They then quote the contract free price point&#8211;4,999 yuan ($730) to 6,999 yuan ($1,025) for the iPhone 3GS. They argue that you can buy a gray-market iPhone cheaper and it has WiFi&#8230;.The truth&#8230;the gray-market price is marginally cheaper for those who want to go &#8216;prepaid.&#8217; But when you examine the full matrix of China Unicom price/plans, you quickly realize that you can save big by going on contract vs. prepaid (pay as you go). There are even four price/plans where your iPhone if free. The iPhone subsidy increases for those who opt for more expensive monthly plans.&#8221;</p>
<p>Butterfield elaborates: &#8220;Moreover, if you want to access &#8216;3G,&#8217; there is no good carrier option other than China Unicom. You can run at 2G speeds on China Mobile or China Telecom. But neither of these two networks support the chipset in iPhone. China Mobile runs TDSCDMA 3G and China Telecom runs CDMA2000 3G. So you are left with China Unicom&#8217;s WCDMA 3G&#8211;a world-standard 3G protocol fully supported by iPhone 3G/3GS. Why not go on contract and get a subsidized iPhone that is well below the &#8216;too expensive&#8217; (contract free) prices that the media is shouting about?”</p>
<p>And in the end, does it even matter? As Butterfield noted, an iPhone sale is an iPhone sale&#8211;whether it’s made by a gray-market vendor or an authorized one. And either way, it&#8217;s good for Apple.</p>
<p>So was the iPhone’s launch in China really a bust? &#8220;Probably not,&#8221; said Butterfield. &#8220;Was it a rousing success? Probably not. The truth is somewhere in the middle.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Well what do you know: China Unicom just coughed up some first weekend sales numbers for the iPhone and &#8230; well, they’re not much to look. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091103/chinese-iphone-sales/">The carrier sold just 5,000</a>. </p>

<p>That’s the argument put forth by Piper Jaffray analyst Chris Larsen in a research note to investors Monday. Larsen feels that the cost to Apple (AAPL) of developing a CDMA version of the iPhone for Verizon’s (VZ) network and the subsidies the company might lose by ending its exclusivity deal with AT&#038;T (T) would be a small price to pay for the spike in iPhone sales they would create.</p>
<p>“Although the iPhone is a strong player in the smartphone market, expanding its multi-vendor strategy could allow it to dominate the industry, as it does with the iPod,” Larsen writes. &#8220;The U.S. market is the world&#8217;s largest smartphone market, but we believe there is a land grab in the U.S. for smartphone share.&#8221;</p>
<p>Expanding his argument, Larson adds, &#8220;Apple&#8217;s exclusivity with AT&#038;T has left the door open for strong competition from competitors, such as Research In Motion&#8217;s Blackberries, Palm&#8217;s webOS smartphones and Google&#8217;s Android operating system on multiple smartphones from OEMs such as Motorola, HTC, Samsung, LG, and others. Making the iPhone available to the other 150+ million subscribers (~2/3s of subscribers) not on AT&#038;T&#8217;s network could result in iPod like adoption.”</p>
<p>Keeping the iPhone exclusive&#8211;while it might enable Apple to do more innovative things, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091019/apple-beats-street/">as COO Tim Cook noted yesterday during the company’s quarterly earnings call</a>&#8211;would also give those rival devices and platforms more time to catch up. If Apple really hopes to keep its lead in the U.S. market, it must do away with exclusivity deals, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090929/iphone-exclusivity-the-beginning-of-the-end/">the same way it’s doing away with them abroad</a>.</p>
<p>That’s bad news for AT&#038;T. Because, as I’ve noted here before, a move to nonexclusivity in the U.S. would <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090717/analyst-att-screwed-without-iphone-exclusivity/">brutalize the carrier’s subscriber base</a>. Analysts have long said that a material number of AT&#038;T iPhone users would flock to Verizon’s superior network given the chance.</p>
<p>Larsen agrees. &#8220;A move to non-exclusivity in the U.S. could have a material impact on the U.S. wireless carriers,&#8221; he writes. &#8220;AT&#038;T could lose meaningful smartphone share, while we think all the other carriers would gain share. We believe Verizon would be the largest beneficiary of non-exclusivity and the development of a CDMA iPhone.&#8221; </p>
<p>Continuing, Larson explains, &#8220;With 35% of AT&#038;T&#8217;s iPhone sales coming from new customers, we feel it is reasonable to assume the company&#8217;s total iPhone sales could decline by 30% or more and that Verizon could pick up the bulk of this lost share (why switch to AT&#038;T for iPhone if you haven&#8217;t left by now and the device is now available through your carrier; Verizon&#8217;s network quality could be a reason to switch from AT&#038;T).&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/steve_moneybags.jpg" alt="steve_moneybags" title="steve_moneybags" width="350" height="233" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26894" />Apple’s September quarter saw, among other things, the release of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/tag/snow-leopard/">Snow Leopard</a>, the latest upgrade to its OS X operating system and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-10-am-pdt/">the first public appearance of CEO Steve Jobs</a>, who’d been on a medical leave of absence for a liver transplant. It was also the first full period since the company launched the iPhone 3GS, in late June. </p>
<p>No wonder it was a blowout quarter.</p>
<p>After market close Monday, <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/19results.html">Apple reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $1.67 billion</a>, or $1.82 a share, on revenue of $9.87 billion. That topped the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, who&#8217;d expected the company to earn $1.42 a share on revenue of $9.2 billion.</p>
<p>The company sold 3.05 million Macs during the quarter, a 17 percent increase over last year. It sold 10.2 million iPods, an eight percent decline from the year-ago quarter. </p>
<p>And iPhones? Apple (AAPL) sold 7.4 million of those&#8211;seven percent more than during the same period last year. So much for those <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091016/apple-earns-iphone-supply/">supply-chain issues that some analysts warned might undermine iPhone sales</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter,&#8221; said CEO Jobs. <em>&#8220;We’ve got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.&#8221;</em> [Editor's Note: "...really great new products"--is that code for a tablet?]</p>
<p>Apple shares, which closed at $189.86 today, are spiking as I write this. At $203.90, they&#8217;re up more than seven percent in extended trading.</p>
<p>Looking ahead to its fiscal first quarter, Apple estimates it will earn between $1.70 and $1.78 a share on revenue in a range of $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion. That’s comically lower than the $1.91 a share on $11.45 billion in sales that analysts are forecasting. But as today’s results clearly demonstrate, Apple subscribes to the underpromise-and-over-deliver school of guidance theory, so there’s likely little cause for concern.</p>
<p>So, to recap: Apple sold more Macs and more iPhones than in any previous quarter in the company’s history. Before the holiday quarter. And in midst of the worst economy we’ve seen in 50 years.</p>
<p><b>Notes From the Earnings Call:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Apple COO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer are handling the earnings call. CEO Steve Jobs will not be attending.</li>
<li>Oppenheimer says this was Apple’s second-highest quarterly revenue ever. Highest-ever operating margin. &#8220;We are thrilled with these record-breaking results, particularly given the economic environment around us.&#8221; <em>Obviously</em>.</li>
<li> Macs are showing &#8220;fantastic momentum,&#8221; says Oppenheimer. Sales have outpaced the market in 19 of the past 20 quarters. Quarterly sales were up 17 percent; portable sales, 35 percent. Interesting: 42 percent growth in Asia.</li>
<li>Moving on to iPods: Sales were down to 10.2 million from 11 million a year ago. But iPod touch sales doubled. MP3 market share in the U.S. is now more than 70 percent (according to NPD, I think).</li>
<li> iPhone sales were up seven percent. Apple will begin selling iPhones in China later this month. More than 85,000 apps in App Store. Two billion downloads.</li>
<li>Apple opened 15 new stores during the quarter. Now has 273. Will soon open first two stores in France, including one at the Louvre.</li>
<li>Moving on to the Q&#038;A. Asked about those iPhone 3GS supply issues I mentioned earlier, Cook acknowledges that demand did outstrip supply in a number of countries. But the situation improved &#8220;markedly&#8221; in September. How are things looking for China? Cook: &#8220;I would have liked to have had more, honestly, because we were still short in some countries at the end of the quarter.&#8221;</li>
<li> Apple is obviously very excited about the iPhone’s impending debut in China. &#8220;There’s a good opportunity, and we’re really excited to get started,&#8221; says Cook. &#8220;It’s the largest market in the world in terms of total phones.&#8221;</li>
<li>No comment on the broader economy. &#8220;We just spend our time projecting our business and leave the economy to the economists.”</li>
<li>Does Apple worry about iPhone rivals? Android? Not really, says Cook. &#8220;We feel very good about suiting up and competing against anyone.&#8221; Our competitors are still trying to catch up with the first iPhone, he adds.</li>
<li>Snow Leopard? Cook says the company&#8217;s been &#8220;pleasantly surprised&#8221; by sales of Apple&#8217;s latest OS.</li>
<li>How does Apple benefit from carrier-exclusivity iPhone deals? Cook says carriers with exclusivity deals are willing to invest more in the platform and that means greater innovation. Visual voicemail is an example of that. That said, he adds, &#8220;We’ve found no lack of people wanting to sell iPhones, frankly.&#8221; </li>
<li> International store revenue up more than 20 percent, on average.</li>
<li> More on iPhone supply issues. Cook insists this is not a component issue, though he notes that silicon can sometimes be hard to get. &#8220;We feel good about our position now.&#8221;</li>
<li>And still more on iPhone supply issues: How many iPhones would Apple have sold if it had an adequate supply? Impossible to say, really, Cook says, adding that 3GS units were in short supply virtually everywhere in September.</li>
<li>Enterprise demand for the iPhone is very strong. It’s either being deployed or already in use at some 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies. Same with Europe and the FT 100. Widely used in higher ed and government as well.</li>
<li>But perhaps not widely enough. Asked about institutional sales,  Cook says Apple isn’t seeing much stimulus funding. The company&#8217;s worried about state spending. Says Cook, &#8220;We may see more this quarter, but it’s too early to tell.&#8221; </li>

<p>Rumored by some analysts to be a nonevent, Apple&#8217;s  invitation-only music gathering today is already proving quite eventful. Audience members expecting Apple (AAPL) exec Phil Schiller to quarterback today&#8217;s proceedings were given a welcome surprise when CEO Steve Jobs took the stage in his first public appearance since his liver transplant surgery.</p>
<p>He was given a standing ovation.</p>

<p>So how does he look? Obviously, he&#8217;s still quite thin, but from where I sit&#8211;which is admittedly near the back of the hall&#8211;he appears healthy&#8230;but gaunt. And that Willy Wonka charisma of his is back in full force. Certainly, he looks reasonably good for someone who just underwent a liver transplant. And how long does it take to regain 60 pounds anyway? Job&#8217;s isn&#8217;t De Niro in Raging Bull&#8230;.</p>

<p>Anyway, it&#8217;s great to see Jobs onstage again. He speaks quietly and it&#8217;s hard to tell if his voice is scratchy or if he&#8217;s just humbled by what he&#8217;s about to say:  “As some of you know, five months ago I had a liver transplant. I now have the liver of a mid-20s person who died in a car crash and was generous enough to donate their organs. I wouldn’t be here without such generosity, so I hope all of us can be as generous and elect to be organ donors. ..I&#8217;d like to take this moment to thank everyone in the Apple community for their support. Thanks as well to Tim Cook and everyone at Apple. They really ran the company very ably during that time. &#8230; So I&#8217;m vertical, back at Apple and loving every day of it&#8230;.&#8221;</p>
<p>Jobs quickly moves on to the announcements of the day. First up: iPhone 3.1, which now offers a Bluetooth Voice control and Genius feature and supports ringtones sold via the iTunes Store for $1.29. 3.1 is available today as a free download.</p>

<p>&#8220;We still consider this a hobby. It is clear that the movie rental business has really helped Apple TV and there are more and more customers that want to try it. And we&#8217;re going to continue to invest in it, because we fundamentally believe there is something there for us in the future.&#8221;</p>

<p>There&#8217;s not much of a business yet in Apple TV, as Apple’s leadership often notes. But there may be soon, with the market for connected TVs evolving as it has been. </p>
<p>In a research note issued this morning, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says the time is right for Apple to release the next iteration of Apple TV&#8211;one that offers DVR capabilities and supports iTunes TV show subscriptions. </p>
<p>&#8220;Apple could leverage its deep library of content with many network and cable channel content owners to provide unlimited access to a sub-library of its TV shows for a standard monthly fee ($30 or $40 per month),&#8221; Munster writes. &#8220;Such a product would effectively replace a consumer&#8217;s monthly cable bill (~$85/month) and offer access to current and older episodes of select shows on select channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>Further, Munster notes, &#8220;The selection would dictate the value, and several tiers could be offered, but we see this as one way for Apple to leverage its large iTunes content library as well as its unique Apple TV hardware in order to get digital video to the TV for a price significantly less than the average cable or satellite TV bill.&#8221;</p>
<p>Makes great sense. And if Apple (AAPL) were to launch these services in concert with App Store support, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090604/app-tv/">as Munster has suggested in the past</a>, it would be a pretty compelling proposition. And it would set the stage for the next evolution of the platform, the Apple Television, an Internet-connected TV with onboard DVR and media center functionality. </p>
<p>Says Munster:</p>
<p>&#8220;Beyond new hardware with DVR or iTunes video subscription features, we believe the 2-5 year roadmap for the Apple TV product lineup is robust. To begin with, Internet-connected TVs with interactive features will likely gain popularity in the next several years. Apple could differentiate itself in this market as a seasoned software developer competing largely with television hardware manufacturers that do not excel in the software arena. The device could also bring iPhone games, a relatively new segment for Apple, to the television.</p>
<p>&#8220;While this is unlikely in the near term,&#8221; Munster continues, &#8220;we believe the iPhone will succeed as a portable gaming platform and Apple may consider bringing higher quality games developed on a similar platform to the TV. The iPhone app developer community is already robust, and Apple could leverage those developers to enter the gaming arena on the TV. In fact, the iPhone or iPod touch could itself operate as a touchscreen gaming control for a game-centric Apple TV.&#8221;</p>
<p>Again, this makes great sense, though TV hardware is not an easy business&#8211;just ask Sony (SNE). But, as Munster aptly notes, it might be quite a bit less difficult if Apple were to &#8220;change the rules of the game,&#8221; something it’s done in a number of markets already.</p>
<p>That said, as Media Memo’s Peter Kafka just reminded me, the cable companies are working very closely with Hollywood to make sure it’s difficult for people to replace their cable service. They’d almost certainly attempt to sack an initiative like one Munster describes above.</p>

Discussing <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090721/aapl-q3/">Apple’s latest earnings</a> on a conference call with analysts Tuesday, company COO Tim Cook revealed that Apple and Toshiba have inked a flash memory deal worth half a billion dollars.</p>
<p>“We did a long-term supply agreement with Toshiba,” Cook explained. “As a part of that, as part of the terms and conditions, we paid them $500 million as a pre-pay earlier in the quarter. You know, we view Flash as a very key component for us because as you know we use it in so much on so many of our products and also we are a reasonable percentage of the user of Flash on a worldwide basis.”</p>
<p>Indeed, Apple (AAPL) sells millions of NAND flash-enabled devices each year, so many that its needs often constrain supply for the entire market. In 2005, the company arranged to purchase up to 40 percent of Samsung Electronics’ holiday NAND output for use in it iPods. In July of last year <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080703/apple-takes-top-honors-in-competitive-nand-eating-contest/">Apple bought 50 million 8Gb-equivalent NAND flash chips from Samsung</a>, forcing the company to reduce its supply to other customers. </p>
<p>Then, this past April, Apple ordered 100 million 8Gb&#8211;or one-gigabyte (1GB)&#8211;chips from Samsung, once again causing flash supplies to tighten. Now we have this $500 million prepayment, which, according to sources, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUST20267020090722">will keep Apple in NAND for about three months</a>.</p>
<p>Great news for Toshiba, which has been suffering mounting losses in the midst of tougher competition, and for the NAND market as well. As Tim Cook said yesterday, &#8220;The NAND market has now begun to stabilize and we expect it to move towards a supply/demand balance.&#8221;</p>

<p>Demand for Apple&#8217;s iPhone 3GS, which topped one million handsets sold in its first weekend at market, has surpassed even the company’s presumably aggressive targets. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090721/aapl-q3/">Reporting earnings Tuesday</a>, Apple (AAPL) said it sold 5.2 million iPhones in its third quarter and finally copped to something that&#8217;s long been apparent to anyone who&#8217;s been keeping an eye on its <a href="http://www.apple.com/retail/iphone/availability.php">iPhone availability widget</a>: Demand for the new iPhone 3GS is far outpacing supply. </p>
<p>&#8220;The iPhone 3GS is currently constrained in virtually every country we&#8217;re shipping in&#8230;and we&#8217;re working very hard to fulfill that demand,&#8221; <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/150291-apple-f3q09-qtr-end-6-27-09-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1">Apple COO Tim Cook said during a conference call with analysts</a>, adding that if the situation persists, some overseas launches might be delayed.</p>
<p>&#8220;In terms of affecting the country rollout, I believe the vast majority of the countries that we are selling the 3G in we will be selling the 3GS I think by the end of the fiscal quarter,&#8221; Cook said. &#8220;It may move a date by a few weeks here or there&#8230;I don&#8217;t want to predict today when supply and demand will balance. I know that it will not balance in the short term. And I don&#8217;t want to give a prediction, because as you can guess it&#8217;s very difficult to gauge the demand without having the supply there to find out what it is.&#8221; </p>
<p>Cook added that Apple expects to bring the 3GS to most countries where the iPhone 3G is currently available by the end of the September quarter.</p>
<p>One last point worth noting here: Voracious demand for the iPhone has made the device the second-largest contributor to Apple&#8217;s bottom line, surpassing the iPod for the first time. Revenue for the iPod for the quarter slipped 11 percent to $1.492 billion, down from $1.678 billion. Meanwhile iPhone revenue grew 303 percent to $1.689 billion, accounting for 19 percent of the $8.3 billion in revenue Apple reported in its third fiscal quarter.</p>
<p>Amazing to think the device debuted just two years ago. If Apple’s business model is as, as Steve Jobs likes to say, a stool that rests on three legs&#8211;the Mac, the iPod and the iPhone&#8211;then it&#8217;s increasingly becoming one that never wobbles. </p>

<p>How&#8217;s <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=5872">September of 2009</a> sound?  Because China Business Network claims that <a href="http://news.alibaba.com/article/detail/technology/100138342-1-iphone-expected-enter-china-market.html">China Unicom and Apple have finally inked a deal</a> that will bring the iPhone to the country around that time. </p>
<p>Manufactured by Foxconn, the Chinese version of the iconic handset will reportedly be identical to the original in all features save one: To comply with the demands of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090710/apple-to-bring-wifi-free-iphone-to-china-three-months-early/">the Chinese version of the iPhone will lack Wi-Fi support</a>. </p>
<p>Why would people pay retail for a defeatured iPhone when they could buy the real thing on the country&#8217;s flourishing gray market? Well, for one thing, Wi-Fi-enabled iPhones are pricey&#8211;$695 for the 16GB model, $811 for the 32GB version. For another, they might not perceive Wi-Fi as a necessity,  <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=5879">as Dan Butterfield notes over at iPhonAsia</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;While some consumers in China may prefer grey-market iPhones with WiFi, there are many millions that have never used WiFi on their phones and have only experienced 2G speeds,&#8221; Butterfield explains. &#8220;For this group, WiFi might be a less important feature. They may be more interested in iPhone’s enjoyable user-experience, entertainment value and status.&#8221; </p>
<p>Either way, defeatured or not, Apple (AAPL) benefits. &#8220;For China’s most tech-savvy power-consumers, WiFi will be important,&#8221; says Butterfield. &#8220;As a result, I suspect smuggling of WiFi-enabled iPhones will continue to be a profitable enterprise. Apple will be a prime beneficiary as grey-marketers will continue to acquire full-price WiFi enabled iPhones in Hong Kong&#8230;.</p>
<p>&#8220;Using conservative estimates,&#8221; Butterfield continues, &#8220;I believe Apple can capture a full 2% share of the wireless market in China within the first 12 months of an official iPhone launch. That’s 14 million iPhones and perhaps another 2 million or so coming via grey-market iPhone sales.”</p>

Not a year after Sony execs disparaged netbooks as undeserving of its premium brand attention, <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/technologyNews/idUSTRE56613520090707?feedType=RSS&amp;feedName=technologyNews">the company announced its token entry into the market</a>: <a href=http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?catalogId=10551&#038;storeId=10151&#038;langId=-1&#038;categoryId=8198552921644650994&#038;parentCategoryId=16154">the Vaio W</a>. </p>
<p>Outfitted with a 10-inch screen, an Intel (INTC) Atom processor, 1GB of memory, a 160GB hard disk drive and Windows XP, the machine prices out at $630 in Japan, $499 in the U.S. That’s quite a bit more expensive than rival netbooks. Which is odd since the market for these machines is fairly price-sensitive. Still, Sony (SNE) feels the W is good value for the money, given its design, cheery color palette (white, brown, pink!) and screen resolution&#8211;at 1366 by 768 pixels, the W’s display is clearly better than that of its rivals.</p>
<p><a href="http://community.zdnet.co.uk/blog/0,1000000567,10013142o-2000331761b,00.htm"> Said Vaio chief Nicolas Barendson</a>, &#8220;We believe that this screen resolution and design offers our customers a better experience, and that it will be popular with both newcomers to the netbook market looking for a quality portable PC at a netbook price point, and customers wanting to improve their existing netbook experience to date by upgrading their screens.&#8221;</p>
<p>Sony’s announcement leaves Apple (AAPL) as the lone major computer manufacturer without a netbook offering, a designation it’s likely to keep for the foreseeable future, according to company execs. “When I look at netbooks, I see cramped keyboards, terrible software, junky hardware, very small screens,” <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090519/apple-rim-no-netbooks/">COO Tim Cook said back in April, noting that it’s &#8220;a stretch&#8221; to call a netbook a personal computer</a>. &#8220;It’s just not a good consumer experience and not something we would put the Mac brand on…it’s not a space as it exists today that we are interested in, nor do we believe that customers in the long term would be interested in. It’s a segment we would choose not to play in.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/iphonehat.jpg" alt="iphonehat" title="iphonehat" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-full wp-image-19915" />Looks like Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster’s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090622/analyst-750000-iphones-sold-last-weekend/">second estimate of Apple’s weekend iPhone sales</a> underestimated demand just as badly as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090618/iphone-3g-s-sales-forecast-half-a-million-sold-this-weekend/">his first</a>.  Apple didn&#8217;t sell 500,000 units of its new iPhone 3GS over the weekend, as Munster first predicted. Nor did the company sell 750,000 units as he said in a research note this morning. It sold over one million. Moreover, downloads of Apple&#8217;s new iPhone 3.0 software, launched last Wednesday, have already  reached six million. </p>
<p>&#8220;Customers are voting and the iPhone is winning,&#8221; <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/06/22iphone.html">Apple CEO Steve Jobs said a press release</a> today. &#8220;With over 50,000 applications available from Apple&#8217;s revolutionary App Store, iPhone momentum is stronger than ever.&#8221;</p>
<p>An impressive showing. Particularly considering all the factors that could slow sales: The souring economy, competition from the Palm (PALM) Pre, the BlackBerry Storm, the T-Mobile G1 and, of course, the iPhone itself. After all, there is now a $99 iPhone on the market. Beyond this, there&#8217;s the fact that the 3GS was launched in eight countries. The 3G debuted in 21.</p>
<p>Interestingly, this is the first time we’ve seen Jobs quoted in an Apple release in some time now. As best I can tell, the last quote attributed to him was in <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/01/21results.html"> a Jan. 21, 2009, earnings release</a>. Since then, Apple (AAPL) has issued 22 more press releases. This is the first in which it is Jobs, and not COO Tim Cook or Phil Schiller, Apple’s senior vice president of Worldwide Product Marketing, who is quoted. Does this mean he&#8217;s officially back at work following his medical leave? I&#8217;ve put that question to Apple and will update if I hear back.</p>

Because here we are, well over a year later, and Apple still hasn’t managed to officially launch the iPhone to China. </p>
<p>But it’s getting closer. </p>
<p>Interfax reports that Apple (AAPL) is <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/apple-inching-closer-chinese-iphone-deal/2009-06-12">near to obtaining the Network Access License</a> from the  Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that would allow the iPhone to be sold in the country. Once the license is secured, Apple needs only to finalize a distribution deal with China Unicom to make good on Cook’s promise, though that has proven problematic. </p>
<p>Apple’s discussions with China Unicom have reportedly been troubled by the company’s distaste for the idea of China Unicom preinstalling non-Apple software&#8211;a media player other than iTunes, for example&#8211;on its iconic handset. That said, Apple is apparently confident enough in a positive outcome that it’s begun staffing up for a launch. Last week the company posted an ad to its recruitment Web site looking for <a href="http://www.jlmpacificepoch.com/newsstories?id=150144_0_5_0_M">someone to oversee “iPhone training” across Asia</a>. The position, which will be based out of Beijing, is responsible for designing training programs for iPhone sales teams and retail channels partners. </p>

It exists, but it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tablet-in-2010-2009-5">probably won’t ship until 2010</a>. This according to <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=18529">Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster</a>, who offers up a heaping pile of grist for the Apple (AAPL) rumor mill in a new research note today. </p>
<p>“Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise,” he writes. “Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7″-10″) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a &#8216;cheap&#8217; portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late, plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet.”</p>
<p>Munster theorizes that the device will use a third version of Mac OS X to offer a sort of middle ground between the iPod touch and the MacBook. &#8220;The device&#8217;s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple&#8217;s iPhone OS and run App Store apps,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Key apps, like Safari and Mail, could make use of the larger screen resolution, making Apple&#8217;s tablet appealing for more extended use, but the company could continue to leverage its primary asset in mobile computing, the App Store, in this scenario.&#8221; </p>
<p>The design of that OS, however, has been time-consuming and will keep the device from market until the first half of next year. &#8220;We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently,&#8221; Munster says, &#8220;but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.&#8221; </p>
