<p>Looks like Sun is &#8220;aligning its business with the global economic climate&#8221; again&#8230; The company will sack 1,500 employees this week, a company spokesperson confirmed to Digital Daily. The move is part of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081114/sun-to-stop-christmas-from-coming/">the restructuring plan Sun announced last November</a> and will affect &#8220;all functions, geographies and levels.&#8221;</p>
<p>In January, Sun confirmed that it had laid off 1,300 employees as part of its November plan to cut 18 percent of its workforce. With this latest round of cuts, that number is pushing toward 3,000.</p>
<p>News of cuts comes as  acquisition talks between IBM (IBM) and Sun (JAVA) continue, suggesting perhaps that IBM prefers its acquisition targets lean&#8230;</p>
<p>Sun&#8217;s statement on the matter in full:</p>

Sun continues to make important choices to streamline operations and align resources to best address market opportunity and position the company for improved financial performance and long term growth. In November 2008, Sun announced a series of changes designed to align its cost model with the global economy and accelerate the introduction of compelling open source innovations. As part of that effort Sun announced a global workforce reduction of approximately 5,000 to 6,000 employees, representing approximately 15% to 18% of the Company&#8217;s global workforce. In January, layoff notifications were given to approximately 1,300 employees as part of that action.</p>
<p>This week, Sun can confirm that notifications are being given to approximately 1,500 as part of this effort.  Reductions are being made across all levels, including vice presidents and directors. Sun remains committed to its strategy with a consistent focus on providing innovations that enable customers to address their business needs. We continue to see great opportunities for our technologies globally and are focused on our customers and partners.</p>
<p>We will continue to provide updates on our progress against the workforce reduction plan as they come available.

<p>Later today, Perlman&#8211;former principal scientist at Apple (AAPL) and the founder of WebTV&#8211;will officially unveil OnLive, the online service with which he hopes to upend the $46 billion world-wide videogame market. Seven years in the making, OnLive promises to create <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/03/23/steve-perlmans-onlive-could-turn-the-video-game-world-upside-down/">an on-demand gaming experience that rivals those offered by dedicated videogame consoles</a>. It&#8217;s capable of streaming <a href="http://kotaku.com/5181300/onlive-makes-pc-upgrades-extinct-lets-you-play-crysis-on-your-tv">even the most advanced, CPU-intensive games</a> to television and computer&#8211;Macintosh or PC&#8211;without lag or a reduction in quality. &#8220;We&#8217;re providing you with the latest high-end titles, the exact same ones you would see at Target or Best Buy, in the same release windows,&#8221; <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2009-03-24-onlive_N.htm">Perlman told USA Today</a>. &#8220;But what is really cool is you don&#8217;t need any high-end hardware to play them. There&#8217;s no physical media. It&#8217;s an all-digital platform. You never need to upgrade your equipment at home.&#8221;</p>
<p>A compelling proposition. A potentially disruptive one too, if OnLive is able to deliver it with the reliability and ease of use it promises. <a href="http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=216200305">Said IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon</a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s a good idea and has potential, but the thing I need reassurance on is being able to deliver this over the network. In games there&#8217;s no wiggle room&#8211;when you press a button to fire you want to fire,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But if it works, this could be a disruptive.&#8221;</p>

This morning the retailer uncrated <a href="http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewSoftware?id=297606951&amp;mt=8">Amazon Mobile</a>, an iPhone/iPod Touch application that allows users to browse its wares and those of associated retailers like Target (TGT) and Macy&#8217;s (M). The app supports Amazon&#8217;s standard features&#8211;customer reviews,  &#8220;1-Click Shopping&#8221; and whatnot&#8211;as well as an intriguing new one. Called <a href="http://www.amazon.com/gp/feature.html?docId=1000291661">Amazon Remembers</a>, it allows users to search for products they&#8217;d like to purchase by photographing real-world products. Testing Amazon Remembers this morning, I snapped a picture of the Sonos Controller on my desk and, sure enough, about 10 minutes later Amazon (AMZN) let me know that it does offer that product for sale. </p>

<p>A neat little feature, although why anyone would actively use it is beyond me. Text searches on Amazon Mobile&#8211;and Amazon&#8217;s iPhone-optimized site&#8211;are both easier and far, far faster. Why bother with the cumbersome &#8220;snap photo-submit photo-wait for Amazon to identify product in photo and its availability and price&#8221;? </p>
<p>What this application is clearly lacking and, frankly, <em>just begging for</em>, is a barcode scanner and real-time price comparison function. That would make it a killer app, indeed. And <a href="http://www.snappr.net/index.php?option=com_content&#038;view=article&#038;id=38&#038;Itemid=79">Snappr</a> has proven barcode scanning on the iPhone is possible. The device just needs an improved camera for it to work&#8230;.</p>

When AC/DC&#8217;s new album, &#8220;Black Ice,&#8221; arrives at market on Oct. 20, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121905495996349221.html">it will be sold exclusively in the U.S. at Wal-Mart and Sam&#8217;s Club</a>.</p>
<p>The deal is an interesting one, and for a number of reasons.  Unlike Brooks&#8211;or The Eagles or Journey, who have similar pacts with Wal-mart&#8211;AC/DC is still under contract to Sony (SNE) BMG&#8217;s Columbia Records. By inking such a deal, Columbia almost certainly risks alienating other retailers, who can&#8217;t be happy to see AC/DC&#8217;s first album of all-new material in eight years become a Wal-Mart exclusive. Among those retailers: Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iTunes Music Store, where AC/DC has so far refused to distribute its music. </p>
<p>The deal also comes at a time when Wal-Mart and other big retailers are reducing their CD shelf space. It&#8217;s been estimated that Wal-Mart, Circuit City (CC) and Target (TGT) have cut between 5 percent and 23 percent of their CD inventory in the last two years. Which means that retail exposure, which was once a given for many bands, is becoming increasingly dear. So much so that it&#8217;s a negotiating point, and&#8211;in Wal-Mart&#8217;s case&#8211;enough of one for big-name acts to justify allowing the retailer to sell their new releases on an exclusive basis. </p>
<p>“Shelf space has shrunk so much over the last five years that for anyone to give you shelf space and exposure is a big deal,” <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/06/09/business/media/09walmart.html">Terry McBride, chief executive of Nettwerk Music Group, recently told the New York Times</a>. “Should the labels be worried? There’s been a move away from the labels for a number of years now. And it’s not necessarily their fault. The shelf space to have those records sell just isn’t there. That’s the market reality.”</p>

According to a survey by market research company NPD, <a href="http://www.npd.com/press/releases/press_080805.html">Apple dominated the retail music market in the first half of 2008</a>, selling more music from January to June of this year than any of its rivals&#8211;including those selling both CDs and a-la-carte digital music downloads. NPD&#8217;s top five U.S. music retailers:</p>

Plus, Amazon’s successful introduction of its digital download store will help the company improve its position in the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>And no doubt improve Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) position as well. After all, how much digital music purchased on Amazon ultimately ends up on iPods?</p>
