Sun Sacks 1,500

axedLooks like Sun is “aligning its business with the global economic climate” again… The company will sack 1,500 employees this week, a company spokesperson confirmed to Digital Daily. The move is part of the restructuring plan Sun announced last November and will affect “all functions, geographies and levels.”

Later today, Perlman–a former principal scientist at Apple and the founder of WebTV–will officially unveil OnLive, the online service with which he hopes to upend the $46 billion world-wide videogame market.

Amazon Remembers Forgets Barcode Scanner

There’s a new beachhead in Amazon’s campaign to commandeer sales from competing retailers: Apple’s iPhone. This morning the retailer uncrated Amazon Mobile, an iPhone/iPod Touch application that allows users to browse its wares and those of associated retailers like Target and Macy’s. The app supports Amazon’s standard features as well as an intriguing, but totally cumbersome, new one.

Apple CEO’s Latest Playlist: “We Are the Champions,” “Winner Takes it All,” “Only One Winner”

Despite the best efforts of Wal-Mart, Best Buy, Amazon, and Target, Apple’s iTunes Store has managed to maintain its iPod white-knuckled choke hold on the U.S. music market. According to a survey by market research company NPD, Apple dominated the retail music market in the first half of 2008, selling more music from January to June of this year than any of its rivals.
