Some 2,000 Verizon Wireless stores opened early this morning, many to lines&#8211;though admittedly, the lines are far shorter than those that accompanied the launch of certain rival devices. </p>
<p>According to News.com, <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10392128-266.html">100 people or so lined up outside Verizon’s midtown Manhattan store last night prior to its midnight opening</a>. And <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=droid+line">various reports posted to Twitter</a> suggest there were queues at other outlets as well, though quite a bit shorter (see below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/droid.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/droid-250x200.jpg" alt="droid" title="droid" width="250" height="200" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28350" /></a></p>
<p>In any event, the fact that there are lines at all must be a welcome sight for Verizon (VZ), which has been looking for a strong rival to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, and for Motorola (MOT), which hopes Droid will revive its much-diminished post-Razr cellphone business. As one Verizon subscriber eager to trade up to Droid told me, &#8220;it’s the best smart phone not made by Apple.&#8221;</p>
<p>With endorsements like this, Motorola should be working a bit harder on branding the device as its own. Right now, the Droid marketing push from Verizon Wireless is so overwhelming that you&#8217;d think CEO Lowell McAdam designed it himself. Why aren&#8217;t we hearing from Motorola as well?</p>
<p>&#8220;Droid is potentially a game changer for Motorola,&#8221; iSuppli analyst Tina Teng said in a recent research note. “Motorola now is no longer just emphasizing slick form factors, such as it did with its RAZR handset. The company now has focused on the hottest segment of the global mobile handset market&#8211;providing compelling smartphone products that are usable and expandable through third-party applications.”</p>
<p>That being the case, Motorola might want to do a bit more to get its name out there.</p>

This morning it unveiled an expanded online store that will better reflect its new real-world counterpart.</p>
<p>&#8220;On the new online Microsoft Store, we’ve added a bunch of new products, including Windows 7 PCs as well as select 3rd party software and accessories,&#8221; <a href="http://trevinchow.com/blog/2009/10/21/the-new-microsoft-store-launches-with-windows-7/">Trevin Chow, senior lead program manager for Microsoft Store, said in a blog post announcing the move</a>. &#8220;And let’s not forget a ton of gaming products that have been added including a bunch of the top selling Xbox 360 titles.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting. Not exactly sure what the upside is to selling PCs online when you don&#8217;t make them. It&#8217;s not like Microsoft (MSFT) will be offering a better experience than, say, Best Buy (BBY), HP (HPQ) or Dell (DELL). And an online outlet doesn&#8217;t afford the company the same opportunity to cultivate the &#8220;Microsoft Experience&#8221; it&#8217;s clearly going for in its brick-and-mortar outlets. So why bother? </p>
<p>A unified experience online and off, I suppose. And, if the infrastructure is in place to sell through one channel, why not sell through both? Of course, the downside is that if you don&#8217;t execute well, you risk giving customers another lousy experience with which to associate your products.</p>

<p>Rabid demand for the iPhone has emptied not just the company’s physical retail outlets, but its online store as well. &#8220;We continue to see extremely high levels of demand for the iPhone which means it comes in and out of stock very quickly and will be why the Web site hasn’t had any since Monday,&#8221; an O2 spokesperson told the Telegraph.</p>
<p>News of the shortage comes just days after O2 rivals <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090929/iphone-exclusivity-the-beginning-of-the-end/">Orange and Vodafone both announced plans to carry the iPhone later this year</a>, bringing an end to O2’s exclusivity deal with Apple (AAPL). If Apple is unable to meet consumer demand with just a single U.K. carrier, how will it cope with three?  </p>
<p>A reasonable question, but one for which Apple presumably has an answer. Said Forrester (FORR) analyst Mark Mulligan, &#8220;I don’t think [Apple] would expand if it couldn’t meet consumer demand, as that would lead to extreme consumer dissatisfaction&#8211;which compared to its peers, Apple is usually good at avoiding.&#8221;</p>

<p>The Palm (PALM) Pre officially went on sale this morning, and judging from initial reports&#8211;and my experience at a local Northern California Sprint store&#8211;neither demand or supply was particularly overwhelming. Certainly, lines for the device were far shorter than those that extended from Apple (AAPL) stores for the launches of the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. </p>
<p>Arriving outside my local Sprint (S) store about an hour after they first opened, I found not a queue of eager Pre-buyers, but two kids making forts out of a few Pre shipping boxes left outside the store. Inside the store, I found a group of nine people waiting in line to add their names to a waiting list for the device, which was already sold out at this location. A Sprint rep refused to tell me how many Pres had been sold this morning, but admitted that the shipment had been a small one.</p>
<p>The situation is apparently the same across the country. The Boston Globe reports that <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/06/new_smart_phone.html">Sprint&#8217;s Back Bay store sold out of its 55 Pres by 11 AM</a>. An informal survey by 24/7 Wall Street reveals <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-short-supply-sell-outs-not-all-instant-palm-s-aapl-rimm-bby/">sell outs or fast-dwindling supplies of the device at Sprint and Best Buy stores in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles</a>. Four of the five Best Buy stores I contacted reported selling out of the Pre very quickly; one representative told me his store had just four of the devices and he believed that to be the case at many other locations.</p>
<p>Sprint stores I spoke with in LA, Chicago and Boston told me they&#8217;d sold out by late morning.</p>
<p>Q: How many names on the list? A: &#8220;We&#8217;re not allowed to say.&#8221; A reader tells me that the line outside the W. Division Street in Chicago was at least 50 people long, and that the store started wait-listing people somewhere around #36. Another reader reports a line of about 20 people outside an Emeryville, CA Sprint store. That same reader claims a clerk told him the store had 60 Pres on hand. Still another reader reports that the line outside Sprint’s Market Street store in San Francisco started at 6 AM this morning. There were a dozen or so folks in line by about 7:30 AM. Finally, another reader reports that a Sprint store in San Francisco’s Castro district had a line of about 40 people when she showed up to get in line at 7 AM. That location, too, sold out quickly.</p>
<p>Four phones at the local Best Buy? Stores in Marin, LA and Chicago sold out within hours? Makes you wonder <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&#038;sid=a7H6bfrDqVPE&#038;refer=us">if Palm and Sprint are purposely constraining supply to foster an image of overwhelming demand</a>.</p>

<p>If inking a video-on-demand deal with a declining DVR pioneer is one of them&#8230; well, that&#8217;s not much of a plan, is it? But when your financial statements look like Blockbuster&#8217;s, I suppose you cling to life however you can (Blockbuster shares have fallen about 80 percent over the last 12 months). And so, beginning in the second half of 2009, the company will make its <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUSTRE52O0X420090325">Blockbuster On Demand service available to TiVo subscribers</a>. The agreement also calls for Blockbuster&#8217;s brick-and-mortar stores to sell TiVo DVRs. “We are excited to be teaming with TiVo, the company that created the DVR, to make Blockbuster’s entertainment content readily available to their millions of subscribers,” <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/03/25/technology/internet/25video.html">said Blockbuster CEO Jim Keyes</a>. “Ultimately, our vision is to work with TiVo so that their subscribers can access movies not only through our On Demand service but also from our stores and through our by-mail service as well.”</p>
<p>For Blockbuster (BBI), the deal is a means of capitalizing on the rising popularity of on-demand video. But to really do that effectively, the company<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/blockbuster-tivo-deal-insignificant-2009-3"> needs alliances with more electronics manufacturers than just TiVo (TIVO)</a>. After all, the DVR pioneer <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&#038;sid=a6Aqoh3LXoPk&#038;refer=us">isn&#8217;t in the greatest of health</a> these days. And Netflix (NLFX) <em>already</em> delivers online video to TiVo and PCs, Macs, Xbox 360s, and selected LG and Samsung Blu-ray players as well. Clearly, Blockbuster is as late to on-demand as it was to DVD-by-mail. </p>

This according to proprietor Apple (AAPL), which said today that iTunes has sold some 200 million TV episodes.  </p>
<p>To repeat: 200 million. Not bad, considering that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070831/nbc-itunes/">Apple tossed NBC&#8217;s fall TV lineup off iTunes last year</a>. And sales are certain to grow, now that all four of the major TV networks&#8211;ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC&#8211;are offering HD versions of its programs through iTunes. Which means Apple is well-positioned to take advantage of an online video market that In-Stat expects to hit <a href="http://www.informationweek.com/news/personal_tech/TV_theater/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=210003655">$4.5 billion in sales by 2012</a>. </p>

<p>Unfazed by a market littered with the shattered remains of previous online wine retailers, Amazon (AMZN) is expected to begin selling by early October. Which is great news for direct-to-consumer wine sellers, who are certain to benefit from Amazon&#8217;s support. &#8220;Amazon isn&#8217;t the first company to sell wine over the Internet, but they have a lot of pull in the online market as the world&#8217;s largest online retailer,&#8221; <a href="http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/California-Wine-to-Flow-Through-Amazon-64463.html?wlc=1221161537">Terry Hall of The Napa Valley Vintners Association told the E-Commerce Times</a>. &#8220;That&#8217;s the exciting part. Consumers will get access to all those wines. It gives consumers a greater choice in what they can purchase, and gives wineries another venue to get their products out to consumers.&#8221;</p>

<p>In <a href="http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=4800&amp;cdvn=news&amp;newsarticleid=25883">an announcement</a> reaffirming the device&#8217;s pricing (from $199 for 8GB to $299 for 16GB to eligible customers), AT&#038;T said it will sell the iPhone 3G without a contract for $599 (8GB) or $699 (16GB). When? &#8220;In the future.&#8221;</p>
<p>AT&#038;T will begin peddling the iPhone 3G at its retail stores beginning July 11 at 8 a.m. local time, along with bundled voice and unlimited data plans ranging from $69.99 to $129.99 a month.
