Reporting a second-quarter loss that widened thanks to a weak videogame market, Electronic Arts today said it will cut 1,500 jobs by early next year as part of a restructuring effort aimed at trimming at least $100 million in costs. This after announcing plans this morning to acquire social network game maker Playfish for $400 million.
An ugly Monday for Sprint Nextel employees. The company plans to eliminate 2,000 to 2,500 positions in the fourth quarter as part of its effort to reduce labor costs by at least $350 million.
If there’s a Guinness World Record for shortest-lived promotional offer by a wireless carrier, Sprint’s surely a front-runner for it. Just six or so hours after offering a $100 service credit to new subscribers who purchase a Palm Pre and port their numbers over from another carrier, Sprint canceled it. The company’s official statement after the jump.
Ouch. European regulators slapped Intel with an antitrust fine and, as expected, it’s a large one–a record $1.45 billion, which dwarfs even the $1.2 billion fine levied against Microsoft in 2008. The largest ever assessed for monopoly abuse, the fine follows charges that Intel abused its market dominance by illegally inducing PC manufacturers to use its chips over those of rival AMD.
Sun chairman and co-founder Scott McNealy probably has a good joke or two about the way the company’s acquisition discussions with IBM have gone down, but he won’t he won’t be relating them as CEO any time soon. This afternoon Sun dismissed speculation that McNealy will replace CEO Jonathan Schwartz in the aftermath of the deal’s collapse.
