The iPhone is finally coming to the world’s most wired country. South Korean regulators on Wednesday cleared the iPhone for sale. Great news for Apple. The South Korean market is a robust one, and analysts say that with the right carrier partner, Cupertino could be looking at first-year sales ranging from 500,000 to two million.
Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein likes to say smart-phone makers “don’t have to beat each other to prosper,” but it’s beginning to look like they–or, rather, Palm–might have to. Because while the Pre may have put Palm back in the game, it’s not clear how long it can keep it there.
The first Android phone intended for AT&T may be scrapped before it’s ever released. Developed by HTC, the “Lancaster” had been scheduled to arrive at market this summer. But industry sources tell DigiTimes that the device hasn’t yet passed AT&T’s validation process and will be delayed or perhaps even abandoned.
With lousy financials, a weak platform strategy and just 4.7 percent of the global handset market, Sony Ericsson is on a long, slow march into irrelevance. Unless Bert Nordberg can turn it around. This morning the struggling handset maker tapped Nordberg, executive vice president of Ericsson, as its new president and CEO.
With the iPhone, Apple is doing to the handset industry what it has done to the PC industry with the Mac: Claiming an inordinate share of profits relative to revenue. Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi estimates that Apple, though it is only the fifth-largest handset vendor, claimed nearly a third of handset industry profits in the first half of 2009.
Now we know why Ericsson declined to offer a specific business outlook for 2009 when it last reported earnings. This morning the company posted a 35 percent drop in first-quarter profit, its financials undermined by its Sony Ericsson joint venture and by customers postponing purchases because their local currency has collapsed.
As if the Zune weren’t embarrassing enough… Microsoft and Verizon are reportedly discussing a touchscreen multimedia cellphone that could launch on the carrier’s network in 2010. The project is codenamed “Pink” and will apparently involve some ungodly combination of Windows Mobile and Zune software.
Sony has no plans to divest its stake in Sony Ericsson, but it is divesting itself of something else: the executive charged with overseeing the joint venture. Najmi Jarwala, the president of Sony Ericsson’s operations in North America, is leaving the company at the end of March.
Palm hasn’t yet set its price or launch date, but it already has a winner on its hands in the Pre. That’s the word from RBC Capital analyst Mike Abramsky, who gave the device one hell of a write-up this morning. Seems Abramsky, who had previously been neutral on Palm, now believes the company has a chance at “smartphone leadership.”
Since 2005, the South Korean government has required all cellphones sold in the country to support WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability), the country’s cellular middleware platform. And for Apple, as well as other handset manufacturers like Nokia and Sony Ericsson, redesigning their devices to do so is a costly proposition. So costly, in fact, that they didn’t bother, leaving the country’s handset market to Samsung and LG, which now dominate it.
On April 1, 2009, that will all change.
You wouldn’t know it from the number of Android handsets on the market, but support for Google’s new mobile operating system is growing. This morning, Open Handset Alliance, a coterie of tech companies dedicated to promoting the OS, added 14 new partners to its roster.
By the end of 2009, Apple’s iPhone will be available in 70 nations, but South Korea is not among them. Nor will it be for the foreseeable future, thanks to WIPI (Wireless Internet Platform for Interoperability), South Korea’s cellular middleware platform.
In August 2005 Google acquired a two-year-old start-up called Android. Founded by Andy Rubin, the guy behind mobile-device maker Danger, Android was rumored to have been developing a mobile-phone operating system.
Google never said much about the acquisition or its plans for Rubin, but he’s been on the company’s payroll ever since, presumably holed up somewhere [...]
