This morning, the company&#8211;which <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090317/nokia-ramps-up-pink-slip-production/">sacked 1,700 employees in March</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090428/nok%E2%80%8E-nok%E2%80%8E-whos-there-not-you-any-more/">another 450 in April</a>&#8211;said it will <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nokia-Continues-to-Streamline-prnews-1588743476.html?x=0&amp;.v=100">cut 330 more jobs</a> in its research and development group. But not to worry, says Nokia, that’s just two percent of the company&#8217;s 17,000-strong R&#038;D staff.</p>
<p>Another sad turn of events for Nokia (NOK), whose dominance of the smartphone market is being <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091111/nokia-apple/">steadily eroded</a> by competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM). In its latest quarter, the company’s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">smartphone market share declined to 35 percent</a> from 41 percent. This slide is likely to continue unless Nokia is able to inspire a major revival in its smartphone volumes with a worthy iPhone rival.</p>

And <a href="http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2009/11/18/sony-ericsson-closing-four-facilities-laying-off-2-000-employee/">the company did just that this morning</a>, announcing plans to <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gJALq9Ldcq4R3Kw55f5VqSfeNOAQD9C21U381">shutter its Research Triangle Park facility in North Carolina, as well as offices in Miami, India and Sweden</a>. </p>
<p>The closures, which will see <a href="http://www.newsobserver.com/business/story/198412.html">Sony Ericsson’s North American headquarters moved to Atlanta</a>, will result in the loss of some 2,000 jobs. This a little more than a year after the joint venture’s last big round of layoffs, part of a companywide cost-cutting plan that also left about 2,000 people unemployed.</p>

Google and Microsoft both posted gains for the month, while Yahoo suffered a decline. </p>
<p>Google (GOOG) claimed 65.4 percent of the domestic search market in October, up from 64.9 percent in September, according to comScore. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s (MSFT) share rose to 9.9 percent from 9.4 percent in September. A modest bit of growth for the month, but quite impressive year over year. Search volume was up 30.8 percent from October 2008.</p>
<p>And Yahoo (YHOO)? Well, the company’s search market share slipped to 18 percent in October from 18.8 percent in September. Below, a table showing comScore&#8217;s (SCOR) search volume and market share data, via JP Morgan analyst Imran Khan (click to enlarge):<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/steveWiphone-250x160.jpg" alt="steveWiphone" title="steveWiphone" width="250" height="160" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-28952" />Lest there be any doubt that Apple’s iPhone is redefining the smartphone market, consider this: In less than two and a half years, the device has managed to claim nearly a fifth of the worldwide market for smartphones.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1224645">new data released this week by Gartner</a>, Apple shipped some 7.04 million iPhones in the third quarter&#8211;up from just 4.72 million phones in the same period a year ago&#8211;for a 17.1 percent share of the market (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p>That’s a 49.2 percent year-over-year increase in sales and it puts Apple (AAPL) in spitting distance of Research in Motion (RIMM), which also posted close to a 50 percent year-over-year gain to claim 21 percent of smartphone sales during the period. </p>
<p>With 39 percent of smartphone sales, Nokia (NOK) was the top seller during the period, and it’s clearly not ceding its spot any time soon. But RIM might, given the small gap between its market share and Apple’s.</p>
<p>In any case, RIM clearly has a fight on its hands as we head in the holidays, especially if <a href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/11/05/att-gearing-up-to-launch-99-8gb-iphone-3gs/">Apple brings an 8GB iPhone 3GS to market in the next few weeks</a>.</p>

Why there&#8217;s a discrepancy between the company&#8217;s numbers and Gartner&#8217;s isn&#8217;t clear.</p>

<p>The acquisition, which has been approved by both companies&#8217; boards, should bolster HP’s data center strategy and, thanks to 3Com&#8217;s routing business, intensify competition with rival Cisco (CSCO), which has lately been expanding into HP&#8217;s businesses.</p>
<p>&#8220;Companies are looking for ways to break free from the business limitations imposed by a networking paradigm that has been dominated by a single vendor,&#8221; <a href="http://www.hp.com/hpinfo/newsroom/press/2009/091111xa.html">Dave Donatelli, executive vice president and general manager, Enterprise Servers and Networking, HP, said in a statement</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;By acquiring 3Com,&#8221; Donatelli added, &#8220;we are accelerating the execution of our Converged Infrastructure strategy and bringing disruptive change to the networking industry. <p>HP and 3Com Corporation (NASDAQ: COMS) (&#8221;3Com&#8221;) today announced that they have entered into a definitive agreement under which HP will purchase 3Com, a leading provider of networking switching, routing and security solutions, at a price of $7.90 per share in cash or an enterprise value of approximately $2.7 billion. The terms of the transaction have been approved by the HP and 3Com boards of directors.</p>
<p>This combination will transform the networking industry and underscore HP’s next-generation data center strategy built on the convergence of servers, storage, networking, management, facilities and services. The resulting business outcome will help customers simplify the network, deploy a unique and innovative edge-to-core network fabric for the enterprise and improve IT service delivery capabilities, all delivered with best-in-class price-performance.</p>

In addition, the combination will add a large and talented research and development team in China that will drive the acceleration of innovations to HP’s networking solutions.</p>
<p>3Com also brings to HP best-of-breed network security capabilities through its TippingPoint portfolio. For the past four years, TippingPoint has been the leader in Gartner’s &#8220;Magic Quadrant&#8221; in its evaluation of leading network security products. Approximately 30 percent of the Fortune 1000 companies have already deployed TippingPoint intrusion prevention systems.</p>

<p>Under the terms of the merger agreement, 3Com stockholders will receive $7.90 for each share of 3Com common stock that they hold at the closing of the merger. The acquisition is subject to customary closing conditions, including the receipt of domestic and foreign regulatory approvals and the approval of 3Com’s stockholders. The transaction is expected to close in the first half of calendar 2010.</p>
<p>HP anticipates that the transaction will be slightly dilutive to fiscal 2010 non-GAAP earnings.

According to <a href="http://www.hitwise.com/us/press-center/press-releases/google-searches-oct-09?j=13425356&amp;e=kara@allthingsd.com&amp;l=1771711_HTML&amp;u=159130959&amp;mid=34732&amp;jb=0">the latest figures from Hitwise</a>, Bing’s share of the search market increased seven percent in October to 9.57 percent, evidently at the expense of both Google (GOOG) and Yahoo (YHOO). The search market share for both companies declined by one percent, Google’s to 70.60 percent and Yahoo’s to 16.14 percent. (See table below; click to enlarge.)</p>
<p>Good news for Microsoft (MSFT). Clearly, Bing’s traffic is not yet leveling out. That said, it should be noted that according to comScore (SCOR), whose search data are most highly regarded by Wall Street, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091013/bing-still-has-zing-google-more-bling-but-yahoo-no-thing/">Bing never lost search market share in the U.S.</a><br />

Odd then to learn that it is not the most profitable. And odder still to learn that that honor belongs to Apple, which has been in the handset market for just two years. </p>
<p><a href="http://strategyanalytics.com/default.aspx?mod=ReportAbstractViewer&amp;a0=5118">According to Strategy Analytics</a>, Apple’s third-quarter iPhone operating profit was $1.6 billion, while Nokia’s was $1.1 billion. Driving Apple’s profits: Strong sales, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have identified at least 4 key factors underlying Apple’s success,&#8221; Strategy Analytics analyst Alexander Spektor explains. &#8220;First, Apple created a simple sub-brand&#8211;the iPhone&#8211;which was memorable and easy to remember. Second, the firm developed an attractive family of models with standout usability that enabled Apple to charge way-above-average prices to operators and consumers. Third, Apple distributed and co-marketed its handsets through top-tier carriers in numerous high-value countries. And fourth, the vendor has kept a solid grip on production costs by working with Foxconn, the world’s largest contract handset manufacturer.”</p>
<p>Quite an achievement for Apple (AAPL) and a major humiliation for Nokia (NOK), which has seen its dominance eroded by the likes of Apple and Research in Motion (RIMM), and not just in North America, but in Europe. Indeed, in its latest quarter <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">Nokia’s smart-phone market share dropped by six points</a>. </p>
<p>As Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston noted at the time, &#8220;[Nokia has] no iPhone killer to drive a major revival in its smartphone volumes. [It] is still struggling in the U.S. smartphone market, and with competition intensifying in China as well, Nokia’s battles can only get tougher in 2010.&#8221;</p>

<p>According to <a href="http://sec.gov/Archives/edgar/data/709519/000119312509227494/d10q.htm">a 10-Q filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission</a>, Sun (JAVA) lost $120 million, or 16 cents a share, on revenue of $2.24 billion in its first quarter. During the same period a year ago, Sun lost $1.68 billion, or $2.24 a share, on $2.99 billion in sales. Analysts had been expecting earnings of 25 cents a share on revenue of $2.31 billion. </p>
<p>Oracle (ORCL) CEO Larry Ellison recently said that Sun is losing about $100 million a month as it waits for European antitrust regulators to approve its acquisition by Oracle. Looks like he’s about right. </p>

The decrease in Server Products revenue during the first quarter of fiscal 2010, as compared to the corresponding period in fiscal 2009, was primarily due to the economic downturn and consolidation of our customer base, specifically in the financial services sector, as projects were scaled back, delayed or canceled, in addition to the <strong>uncertainty associated with the proposed acquisition by Oracle and increased competition</strong>.  </p>
<p>Storage Products Revenue<br />
The decrease in Storage Products revenue during the first quarter of fiscal 2010, as compared to the corresponding period in fiscal 2009, was primarily attributable to the economic downturn as projects were scaled back, delayed or canceled, in addition to the <strong>uncertainty associated with our proposed acquisition by Oracle and increased competition</strong>.  </p>
<p>North America<br />
The decrease in revenue during the first quarter of fiscal 2010, as compared to the corresponding period in fiscal 2009, was primarily due to decreased sales of our enterprise Server Products, storage disk products and Services. We are still seeing the results of IT budget cuts instituted last year by our largest customers due to the economic downturn, especially in the financial services sector, in addition to the consolidation of our customer base. Across all sectors, non-critical projects are on hold. Revenue was also negatively impacted by the <strong>uncertainty associated with our proposed acquisition by Oracle and increased competition.  </strong>

Sadly, the same cannot be said for its subscribership. Reporting third-quarter earnings this morning, the company posted a loss of $149.1 million, or four cents a share on revenue that rose to $629.6 million from $612.8 million. Quite a bit better than its year-earlier loss of $4.88 billion, or $1.93 a share. </p>
<p>Absent one-time charges, the company broke even for the quarter. Analysts had been expecting a two-cent loss on revenue of $609 million. </p>
<p>Good news, but it was tempered with a bit of bad. Because Sirius&#8217;s (SIRI) subscriber growth is slowing. The company ended the quarter with 18.5 million total subscribers. That&#8217;s up 103,000 from the second quarter, but down 2.1 percent from a year earlier.  </p>
<p>&#8220;We are very pleased with what we accomplished during the third quarter, especially when considering the macroeconomic issues affecting consumers and the auto industry,&#8221; Sirius CEO Mel Karmazin said in a statement. </p>
<p>&#8220;We managed to grow revenue, grow ARPU, reduce operating costs, increase adjusted income from operations significantly, and refinance higher cost debt,&#8221; Karmazin added. &#8220;We look forward to continuing this performance. We grew subscribers and improved churn in the quarter, and we are well positioned to take advantage of an economic rebound. We expect to grow subscribers, revenue, and cash flow next year regardless of the magnitude of any recovery.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/images-1.jpeg" alt="images-1" title="images-1" width="99" height="98" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28232" />Investors expecting NetSuite to break even on a per-share basis for its third quarter were given a pleasant surprise this afternoon when the company beat estimates by a penny. Though its loss  widened to $8 million, or 13 cents a share, from $6.2 million, or 10 cents a share, in the same quarter last year, revenue rose to $41.7 million from $40.4 million. </p>
<p>Excluding special items, NetSuite (N) said earnings for the quarter were one cent a share. Said NetSuite CEO Zach Nelson: &#8220;We are very pleased to report record revenue and record cash flow.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/ciscosimpsons.jpg" alt="ciscosimpsons" title="ciscosimpsons" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28200" />As its recent buying binge&#8211;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091103/cisco-dvn/">three acquisitions in October, alone</a>&#8211;suggests, Cisco’s business is in decent shape these days. Posting <a href="http://investor.cisco.com/releasedetail.cfm?ReleaseID=421954">earnings</a> after market close Wednesday, Cisco reported a fiscal first-quarter profit of $1.8 billion, or 30 cents a share, compared with a profit of $2.2 billion, or 37 cents a share, for the year-earlier period. Sales were $9.02 billion, down from $10.331 billion the company managed last year.</p>
<p>Excluding one-time items, Cisco (CSCO) said it earned 36 cents a share, down from 42 cents a share in the same period last year. Still, that was better than the consensus estimate. Analysts polled by Reuters had expected the company to deliver a profit of 31 cents a share on sales of $8.745 billion.</p>
<p>&#8220;Building off what we saw as a clear tipping point in Q4, our Q1 results continued to reflect strong sequential growth trends that meet or exceed expectations during normal economic times,&#8221; CEO John Chambers said in a statement. </p>
<p>&#8220;We view the improving economic outlook, combined with solid execution on our growth strategy, as creating unparalleled opportunity to drive more value into the core of the network,&#8221; Chambers continued. &#8220;Simply said, we believe that key market transitions across collaboration, virtualization and video will drive productivity and growth in network loads for the next decade, and are evolving even faster than expected.&#8221;</p>
<p>At $24.20, shares in the company are trading up nearly four percent on the news.</p>

Analysts reflecting on <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091028/ask-for-sale/">Diller’s recent remarks about Ask’s &#8220;speculative future&#8221;</a> say Microsoft is the most likely buyer if IAC (IACI) is truly serious about dumping the little search engine that couldn’t. </p>
<p>Ask, analysts note, has about four percent of the domestic search market, which would give Microsoft (MSFT) a nice little bump up from the 9.4 percent market share it currently claims.  And it certainly wouldn’t hurt that a Microsoft acquisition would undoubtedly mean the end of Ask’s relationship with Google (GOOG). </p>
<p>&#8220;Right now, Microsoft wants share so they could pick up those points from Ask,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/innovationNews/idUSTRE59R44720091028?sp=true">Colin Gillis, an analyst at Brigantine Advisors, told Reuters</a>. &#8220;Plus it has a double impact since Google powers Ask&#8217;s paid search.&#8221;</p>
