Google’s Chrome OS: “It Just Works”

photo Speaking at Microsoft’s Worldwide Partner Conference in New Orleans this past July, Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said of Google’s forthcoming Chrome OS, “Who knows what this thing is?” Today, he found out. The operating system, a direct challenge to Microsoft Windows, was on display at a media gathering at the company’s HQ this morning, and in the words of Sundar Pichai, Google’s vice president of product management, it is intended to make computing a “delightful” experience.

God-Google-Satan: The Oneness

“Everyone loves Google.” So began a 2001 Wired profile of the company and its “resolutely uncommercial” path to success. Everyone loves Google. Sounds like so much hyperbole now, but at the time it was essentially a truism. Eight years later, that’s no longer really the case. Today, Google seems a distorted reflection of the ideals that made it so beloved. No wonder it’s fallen off the TRUSTe/Ponemon Institute’s list of the top 20 most trusted companies in the United States.

QOTD DD Shorty

While Google is a play on googol, too is a play on the much smaller number–two. It also means “in addition,” as this blog reflects my life outside of work.”

A Battle of Good Vs. Don’t Be Evil

evil_scale.jpgNow that Google’s demonstrated that you can, in fact, make money without doing evil, it’s apparently wiling to admit you can make even more without lending much credence to silly informal corporate mottos.

I Know You Are, but What Am I?

The Internet has evolved from open standards, having a diversity of companies. And when you start to have companies that control the operating system, control the browsers, they really tie up the top Web sites, and can be used to manipulate stuff in various ways. I think that’s unnerving.”
That’s what Google co-founder Sergey Brin had [...]

Someday, We’ll All Look Back on This and Laugh

According to last year’s looking-ahead-to-the-year- to-come lists, 2007 was to be “a year of hyperdisruption for the technology industry.” It was to be “a year of carnage.” But it was also to be “a year of great happiness and multiple blessings.” Above all, 2007 was to be “a busy year for technology.” Which, as you’ll see below, is pretty much how it turned out. What follows is Digital Daily’s abridged guide to the year in tech news–a fond reminiscence of what was, and our First Annual Year-End List For Year-End List Haters.

Does Android Dream of Developer Sheep?

Odd, isn’t it, that Google will award up to $30 million in prize money to anyone able to land a privately funded spacecraft on the moon, but it’s willing to pony up just $10 million to spur interest in development of its new Android platform for mobile devices. Apparently Google’s dominion over space figures higher [...]
