Former Brocade CEO: Hello, BofA? Yes, I’d Like to Stop Payment on a $15 Million Check.
Another first for former Brocade Communications Systems CEO Greg Reyes. He was the first Silicon Valley CEO to be indicted on federal charges in the options backdating scandal of a few years ago and the first to be found guilty. And on Tuesday, he became the first to have his conviction overturned.

Apple Event Scheduled for Wednesday Sept. 9–Music, NO Tablet
It has happened every September since 2005, and in a few short weeks it will happen once again. Apple is indeed planning a keynote event for the week of Sept. 7. And according to sources close to the company, the date is Wednesday, Sept. 9. Sadly, it will not feature the tablet device the company is rumored to be developing.

Psystar: The Roughest, Toughest, Hackintosh Stuffest Hombré That’s Ever Crossed the Rio Grande
Interesting turn of events in the Apple-Psystar spat. The Mac clone maker has hired a new law firm in its battle against Apple’s copyright-infringement suit. Why? “Psystar has always been more a Cowboy than a Hippie,” the company said. “Now we’ve changed lawyers to better reflect who we are.”

LIVE: Google Apps Event

In a year, Google Apps will be “night and day from what they are today.” That’s what Dave Girouard, president of Google’s Enterprise division, told attendees of the Bank of America and Merrill Lynch Technology Conference last week. Today we’ll likely find out whether that was truly a foretelling of things to come or more Google braggadocio. At an event in San Francisco, Google was set to discuss the future of its productivity suite and some enhancements that may begin to close the gap with Microsoft Office. Click through for a live blog of the event.

Palm Pre: The Big Day …
The Palm Pre officially went on sale this morning, and judging from initial reports–and my experience at a local northern California Sprint store–neither demand or supply was particularly overwhelming. Certainly, lines for the device were far shorter than those that extended from Apple stores for the launches of the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. Arriving outside my local Sprint store about an hour after they first opened, I found not a queue of eager Pre-buyers, but two kids making forts out of a few Pre shipping boxes left outside the store.

And by “Bug Fix,” We Mean the Palm Pre’s iTunes Integration…
Apple rolled out updates to QuickTime and iTunes on Monday, presumably as preface to iPhone 3.0. Included in iTunes 8.2 are “many accessibility improvements and bug fixes.” Just what Apple means by that is unclear, although one wonders if it might be a clever euphemism for the Palm Pre’s recently disclosed Media Sync feature, which allows the device to synchronize seamlessly with iTunes, essentially by masquerading as an iPod.

The OpenTable Binge and Purge
For a company whose business is built on the recession-brutalized fine-dining industry, OpenTable’s IPO last week was impressive. Must have made for quite a windfall for the company’s larger investors. Especially those who took the opportunity to dump their stakes in their entirety.

Google Outage Caused by Asian “Traffic Jam”
If the Web has a single point of failure, you’d think it was Google, given the outcry over the the outages suffered by some of the company’s services Thursday. Something went wrong at the company this morning and whatever it was had widespread effects on a broad spectrum of Google services. The source of the disruption? A system error that sent a bunch of Google Web traffic to Asia, apparently.

Newsom Enters Twit Race to Grab Way More Than a Million Voters
In a move that most likely would not have been made without the recent efforts of Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced his candidacy for the California Governor’s seat this morning via Twitter.

Google CEO: “We Are Not Immune”
We’re not likely see a repeat performance of the surprisingly strong results Google reported in its fourth quarter when the search giant next reports earnings. Certainly, that’s the impression given by Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s grim economic commentary at the Morgan Stanley Technology Conference in San Francisco Tuesday.

Microsoft CFO: With or Without YHOO
Microsoft is still interested in a search deal with Yahoo, but for now it’s assuming one’s not in the cards. That’s the word from Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell, who, in remarks at a Goldman Sachs conference in San Francisco Thursday, said Yahoo is not a “silver bullet” solution for the problems with its search business.

Macworld ’09: One Last Thing–DRM-Free iTunes Plus, 3G iTunes and Tony Bennett
Looks like today’s keynote will include a “One More Thing” moment after all, even without Steve Jobs to deliver it. And it will focus on iTunes. Three big updates to the iconic software, today. Plus, Tony Bennett to close out the keynote with two of his most familiar–and given the venue, appropriate–songs.

Ethics Statement
Here is a statement of my ethics and coverage policies. It is more than most of you want to know, but, in the age of suspicion of the media, I am laying it all out.

Best use of the Beeker “meee” ever.
- Has Bell Invented the “Telegraph Killer”?
While the technology behind the Telephone is new, the design is reassuringly old-fashioned, reminiscent of a phrenologist’s horn or ear-candle in form. We found the experience far more comfortable than the one we had with the Telegraph.
