Palm shares are trading higher today, bolstered by anticipation of the Nov. 15 launch of the Pixi, the company’s second webOS handset, and by some silly rumors about a potential takeover by Nokia. Does the company really need another software platform to add to Symbian, Maemo and Qt? C’mon.
Electronic Arts is betting big on social gaming. This morning, the videogame publisher said it will acquire social network games maker Playfish for $400 million. An interesting move given that the company’s leadership dismissed rumors of such a deal just last month.
If AT&T took offense at Verizon’s “There’s a Map for That” ad campaign, wait until it gets a load of its rival’s newest ad spots. Unfazed by AT&T’s litigious reply to its first effort, Verizon rolled out a trio of new anti-AT&T ads over the weekend and they are brutal in their criticism of the carrier’s network coverage.
It’s looking more and more likely that Apple is planning a fall refresh of its iMac line. Last week we heard rumors that some new all-in-one, dual-core desktops were already rolling off the assembly lines of Apple’s manufacturing partners. Now comes word of Federal Communications Commission filings that confirm the existence of the new wireless mouse and keyboard that might be paired with them.
Microsoft brought it’s not-so-anxiously-awaited Zune HD to market today. With its touchscreen, Wi-Fi capability and high-definition video output, the device is intended as an answer to the iPod touch, though it lacks the application marketplace that helped make Apple’s device so popular. And it’s not going to be getting one anytime soon, either.
When Steve Jobs described the iPhone at D5 as “the best iPod we’ve ever made,” he set the bar high for future iterations of the iconic device. Now, in the run-up to tomorrow’s invitation-only Apple event, the question is: Will Apple reach the bar? And with what? The answer, if the latest rumors prove true, depends on your feelings about iPods with cameras.
The rumors are true. Mark Lucovsky, the engineer whose departure from Microsoft allegedly sent CEO Steve Ballmer into a paroxysm of profanity and chair-tossing, has left Google for a new position at VMware, the company has confirmed.
At long last, the Palm Pre has a price and a release date. Ending months of rumor and speculation, Palm and Sprint said this morning that the device will arrive at market nationwide June 6. Price: $199.99 with a two-year service agreement and after a cheesy $100 mail-in rebate.
Sun chairman and co-founder Scott McNealy probably has a good joke or two about the way the company’s acquisition discussions with IBM have gone down, but he won’t he won’t be relating them as CEO any time soon. This afternoon Sun dismissed speculation that McNealy will replace CEO Jonathan Schwartz in the aftermath of the deal’s collapse.
Market source reports from Taiwanese trade mags are best taken with a grain of salt, if not an entire salt flat–particularly if they concern Apple. That said, claims today that Cupertino has ordered a bunch of 3.2-megapixel CMOS image sensors for its next-generation iPhone seem entirely reasonable, if only because the device’s current camera is so poor.
Palm’s Michael Abbott delivered more than just the keyonote at Web 2.0 Expo. But not that much more. Absent from his remarks Wednesday evening was any news about the price of Palm’s forthcoming Pre handset or a hard-and-fast release date–two bits of information the industry has been pining for since the device was first announced in January.
