“Plan B” Is Short for “Be Seeing Ya, Yahoo”
![]()
Microsoft has withdrawn its bid for Yahoo, but if Yahoo, beaten into submission by irate investors, should suddenly come crawling back to the now empty negotiating table, Microsoft might indulge it, if only for a moment.

Ballmer to Yang: Dear Jerry, Drop Dead
Here’s the full text of Microsoft (MSFT) CEO Steve Ballmer’s letter to Yahoo (YHOO) CEO Jerry Yang.
Mr. Jerry Yang
CEO and Chief Yahoo
Yahoo! Inc.
701 First Avenue

Dear Jerry:
After over three months, we have reached the conclusion of the process regarding a possible combination of Microsoft and Yahoo.
I first want to convey [...]
See Ya! Wouldn’t Want to Be Ya
Microsoft’s walked. As first reported by BoomTown, Microsoft (MSFT), which had threatened to abandon its hostile bid for Yahoo (YHOO) a number of times over the past month, did just that on Saturday.
The company confirmed to BoomTown that merger talks with Yahoo, which began in earnest Friday, collapsed Saturday afternoon when they could not agree [...]

Slow and Steady Wins the Race, Eh Speedy?
Microsoft CFO Chris Liddell said last week that “speed is of the essence” in completing a deal to buy Yahoo.
So why is it taking the company so damn long to respond to Yahoo’s latest stonewalling of its advances? Three days have passed since the expiration of Microsoft’s deadline for Yahoo to accept its buyout offer [...]
The Sound of Silence
Yahoo let Microsoft’s deadline for a response to its $40 billion-plus offer for the Sunnyvale, Calif., Internet company pass without a word Saturday. And according to people familiar with the situation, the companies haven’t traded words for several days.

New From Motorola: MOTO RAZZR “Carl Icahn Edition”
Motorola (MOT) has finally succumbed to the aggressive … “charms” of billionaire investor-provocateur Carl Icahn and appointed two of his four nominees to its board of directors. Microsoft to Yahoo: You Have No Chance to Survive Make Your Time
Its patience worn thin by Yahoo’s (YHOO) apparently near-terminal inertia, Microsoft (MSFT) on Saturday gave the company three weeks to enter formal merger negotiations or face a hostile acquisition bid.
“If we have not concluded an agreement within the next three weeks, we will be compelled to take our case directly to your shareholders, including the [...]
Sources Familiar With the Matter: “Sources Close to the Situation Totally Full of It”
The reason Microsoft hasn’t announced the slate of dissident directors it plans to nominate to Yahoo’s board isn’t that it’s already too deep in negotiations with Yahoo to bother–it’s that it can’t find any dissident directors to nominate. This according to “sources close to the situation” who tell the New York Post that Microsoft hasn’t managed to line up a single candidate for Yahoo’s board.

Just Get It Over With Already …
Microsoft (MSFT) may have no choice but to raise its “generous” $31-per-share hostile bid for Yahoo (YHOO) if it hopes to acquire the company without a messy proxy fight. This according to Citigroup (C) analyst Mark Mahaney, who in a research note to clients today said Microsoft is unlikely to walk away from the [...]

Murdoch to Microsoft: U Can Has Yahoo
Asked during a February earnings call whether News Corp. might entertain the idea of a MySpace-Yahoo alliance, company Chairman Rupert Murdoch replied: “I think that day has passed, but you never know.”
Well, now that he’s had about a month to think about it, Murdoch seems more certain that day has passed. In remarks at [...]

Ethics Statement
Here is a statement of my ethics and coverage policies. It is more than most of you want to know, but, in the age of suspicion of the media, I am laying it all out.

Best use of the Beeker “meee” ever.
- Has Bell Invented the “Telegraph Killer”?
While the technology behind the Telephone is new, the design is reassuringly old-fashioned, reminiscent of a phrenologist’s horn or ear-candle in form. We found the experience far more comfortable than the one we had with the Telegraph.
