Sprint effectively lowered the price of the Palm Pre today to $99 for new customers only, offering a $100 service credit to those who port their numbers over from another carrier. To be eligible for the promotion, customers must purchase the Pre along with a two-year service agreement and abandon their current carriers. UPDATE: Sprint has cancelled the offer. If there was any doubt that Ned Hooper is Cisco CEO John Chambers’s likely heir apparent, it disappeared today when the company named him chief strategy officer. For Hooper, who was already waist-deep in corporate strategy at Cisco as senior vice president corporate development and head of its consumer division, this is quite a promotion.
How well is Amazon’s Kindle electronic book reader really doing? Well, according to Citigroup’s Mark Mahaney, whose analytical prowess enables him to extrapolate sales figures from little more than Kindle’s sales ranking on Amazon’s Web site and from the number of customer reviews it has received, the Kindle is doing quite well. But according McAdams Wright Ragen analyst Tim Bueneman, who’s actually, you know, spoken with some Amazon officials, it might not be selling as well as Mahaney claims.
