Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo says the demand for mobile devices improved in many markets during the third quarter–but you wouldn’t know it to look at the company’s earnings. This morning, Nokia posted an unexpected 559 million euro ($836 million) loss for the period, its first in a decade.

Dragging the company down: A 908 million euro goodwill write-off in the Nokia Siemens Networks venture it co-owns with Siemens (SI). Revenue was 9.8 billion euros, or about $14.6 billion, which was down about 20 percent compared to last year. Worse, smart-phone market share declined to 35 percent from 41 percent in the previous quarter.

Six points gone in three months? That’s a brutal loss and one that demonstrates just how much pressure the company is seeing from Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM), among others.

“Nokia is launching plenty of new high-end smartphone models, such as the N900 and N97 mini,” Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Reuters. “But as yet there is no iPhone killer to drive a major revival in its smartphone volumes. Nokia is still struggling in the U.S. smartphone market, and with competition intensifying in China as well, Nokia’s battles can only get tougher in 2010.”

Still, Nokia (NOK) did have some good news to report. It expects mobile device volumes to increase in the fourth quarter of 2009 and it sees the global handset market shrinking less this year than analysts had feared–seven percent instead of 10 percent.

“It is encouraging to see some signs of recovery in our markets,” Kallasvuo said during a conference call. “But let’s be clear, uncertainty in end-consumer demand remains.”

Oracle’s pending acquisition of Sun will undoubtedly be the subject of much discussion this afternoon when the database behemoth reports fiscal first-quarter earnings after the market close. Indeed, there’s quite a bit of jawing about it already, particularly about Oracle’s continued commitment to the deal in light of the ugly decline in Sun’s revenue and profitability since it was announced in April.

In a research note issued this morning, Bernstein analyst Toni Sacconaghi wondered whether Oracle (ORCL) might even consider walking away from the deal, though he ultimately concluded that it was unlikely.

“Given ORCL’s repeated and strident commentary, it appears very unlikely that it will walk away from the deal, although it would not face a break-up fee if it did (unlike Sun, which faces a $260+ million break-up fee),” he wrote. “We continue to believe that the JAVA-ORCL deal is very likely to close, but it will be interesting to see if Oracle’s conviction level waivers at all on its earnings call today.”

Indeed. Certainly, there are plenty of reasons to think that it might. For one thing, notes Sacconaghi, Sun’s (JAVA) recent financials are going to make it difficult for for Oracle to hit its promised $1.5 billion in first-year accretion profits.

“Our forecast now calls for [Sun] to be barely break even on a non-GAAP basis next year,” Sacconaghi says, adding that earnings are likely to be nearly $900 million less than he modeled when the deal was first announced. “Accordingly, assuming no material revenue synergies, our analysis suggests that in order to hit its $1.5B accretion target, Oracle may need to reduce Sun’s workforce by 15,000, which represents over 50 percent of Sun’s current headcount and appears implausible.”

So Oracle could hit its aggressive Year One accretion targets. It would just have to gut Sun to do it.

One last point worth noting here. Sacconaghi seems confident the European Union will ultimately approve Oracle’s acquisition of Sun, though possibly with conditions around mySQL. But he thinks approval will take time. And the longer it takes, the worse it will be for Sun, whose business is already suffering from the uncertainty surrounding it.

“…The EU took an average of 140 days between the time that a Phase II [review] was announced and a merger was ultimately approved,” he explains. “Given that Phase II for the JAVA deal was announced on September 3rd, this implies a January date for resolution, and would require JAVA to go through another two full quarters as a standalone company. With uncertainty around the ORCL deal already weighing on JAVA, this suggests the potential for further erosion in Sun’s financials.”

He had better hope so, because the world’s largest handset maker is clearly having a tough time of it. Nokia posted a gruesome 66 percent drop in profit in what the company generously described as a “tough” second quarter, dragged down by sales that fell 25 percent to 9.91 billion euros.

Nokia (NOK) shipped 103.2 million units during the quarter, down about 15 percent year-over-year. Worse, increased competition in the smart-phone market from the likes of Apple (AAPL) and RIM (RIMM) forced the company to reduce forecasts for market share and profitability. Nokia had expected to increase market share in the second half of the year, but now it expects it to remain flat. And the company expects handset shipments for 2009 to be around 10 percent lower than in 2008.

“Nokia put in a solid performance in what was another tough quarter,” Kallasvuo said. “Competition remains intense, but demand in the overall mobile device market appears to be bottoming out.” Good news, because its search for the bottom has been having a calamitous effect on Nokia. Shares in the company are down more than 12 percent at $13.70 in early trading.

Facing back-to-back full-year net losses, Sony is taking a hatchet to its fixed costs in a yet another bid to return to profitability. The company plans to halve its roster of suppliers to 1,200, shaving a clean 20 percent off its procurement bill.

Facing back-to-back full-year net losses, Sony is taking a hatchet to its fixed costs in a yet another bid to return to profitability. The company plans to halve its roster of suppliers to 1,200, shaving a clean 20 percent off its procurement bill. That should save it 500 billion yen ($5.3 billion) in purchasing costs this fiscal year as it as it trades higher-volume orders for lower prices from its remaining parts suppliers. Nissan (NSANY) did something similar to turn itself around a decade ago, so Sony’s move is not without precedent.

And at this point, the company clearly has to do something. Its last financials were grotesque and the ones to come promise to be little different. The “transformation” Sony began four years ago is still a work in progress, arguably one that’s been stalled for some time now. Once an electronics powerhouse, Sony (SNE) is now a laggard in many of the markets it once dominated: videogame consoles, digital music players and TVs. “The prices of digital home appliances have been declining by 15% to 20% every year lately,” said Sony spokesperson Mami Imada. “Unless we cut costs we cannot hope to survive the price competition.”

You know things are bad at AMD when the company’s schadenfreude over Intel’s European legal woes spills over into its brand messaging. Surf over to AMD’s Web site this morning and you’ll find foremost on its homepage not a message about Fusion, its next-generation microprocessor design, or branding for its various chips, but a gigantic European Union flag flying over this text:

“European Commission finds Intel guilty of breaking antitrust laws, harming consumers.”

Click through and you’ll find an entire subsite celebrating the EC’s finding–a shrine of court documents, press releases and industry quotes. “European Commission Reveals the Truth About Intel,” the page shouts, cataloging AMD’s grievances against the company. And while that’s apparently the case, AMD’s response reveals a bit of truth about AMD. Gloating over a legal victory is one thing, but building a branding campaign around it is another one entirely. Moral superiority is wonderful, but it’s not going to win any battles in the marketplace.

For AMD (AMD) to beat Intel (INTC) at its own game, it must beat Intel at its own game. “Imagine a world where the world’s most important information technology only comes from one place,” AMD President and CEO Dirk Meyer recently told BusinessWeek. “Nobody wants to live in that world.” No, I suppose not. But if we’re going to live in the better one the Meyer is hinting at, AMD has got to build it. Talking about it as your company continues to struggle toward profitability after more than two years of losses, isn’t going to cut it.

The hard drive manufacturer said Wednesday that it plans to sack another 1,100 employees–2.5 percent of its workforce. With the econalypse driving down orders for personal computers and, by extension, Seagate’s storage products, the company has had little choice but to resort to measures like these as it works to return to profitability. Earlier this year, it laid off nearly 3,000 workers and suspended its quarterly dividend. But clearly, that wasn’t enough. Seagate says this latest round of layoffs will save it $125 million annually and help it become “cash-flow and earnings positive” within its 2010 fiscal year.

After three years, AMD is finally getting around to merging its microprocessor and graphics divisions, another stab at reaching profitability after more than two years of losses. On Wednesday afternoon the company said it would consolidate the two divisions into one–platforms and products–led by SVP Rick Bergman, who joined AMD after the company acquired ATI in 2006.

Platforms and products is one of four new operating units created in this latest restructuring, which also birthed an advanced technology group, a marketing group and a consumer group. Why this particular arrangement is any better than AMD’s reorg of a year ago–which spawned the Central Engineering Organization and Computing Solutions Group–is anyone’s guess. AMD CEO Dirk Meyer says it will optimize AMD’s operations and drive the company toward sustained profitability and long-term success. But then he said that about the last one as well.

Oh, speaking of that last reorg, Randy Allen, the 24-year AMD veteran who figured so prominently in the company, is leaving. AMD (AMD) offered no explanation for his departure and there’s no word yet on where he’s headed. That said, some surmise that he may be following a path beaten by two of his former colleagues, Raja Koduri and Bob Drebin, who both fled AMD for Apple (AAPL)

Cisco opened its books this afternoon and what they revealed wasn’t exactly pretty: declining profit and slumping sales. Not the sort of performance you hope for in a tech bellwether. But clearly Cisco has been beaten into submission by the econalypse just like everyone else.

For its third quarter, the company posted a profit Wednesday that fell 24 percent from a year earlier but still beat expectations. Sales slipped 17 percent. The specifics: Revenue topped out at $8.16 billion, down from $9.79 billion for the same period last year but better than the $8.07 billion analysts had expected. Sales were $8.2 billion, topping analysts’ forecasts of $8.1 billion. Excluding one-time charges for acquisition costs, Cisco (CSCO) earned 30 cents per share, a nickel more than the Street had been looking for.

So, overall, a good report that exceeded expectations with numbers that, by any standard, are pretty damn ugly. “Cisco delivered solid financial performance despite a challenging global economy and period of evolving market dynamics,” said CEO John Chambers. “These results demonstrate our ability to drive operational excellence and manage profitability across varying economic cycles.”

One way of putting it, I suppose. Certainly investors are eating it up. Cisco shares rose on the news.

With the Dow near its lowest point in a decade and global PC shipments down for the first time since 2002, according to market research firm IDC, Hewlett-Packard (HPQ) reported fiscal first-quarter earnings today, and though they met Wall Street’s expectations, they were not what the market had been hoping for. Shares in the world’s largest technology company slipped in after-hours trading, dragged down by news of a fiscal first-quarter profit that fell 13 percent from a year ago and by HP’s admission that all but one of its divisions suffered sharp year-over-year revenue drops. The company’s somber second-quarter forecast didn’t help matters either. HP estimates that second-quarter FY09 revenue will decline approximately two to three percent from a year earlier. The forecast for the next quarter and the full fiscal year “assumes that first-quarter market conditions will persist,” the company said.

Clearly, the global slowdown in tech spending is taking its toll on the company, though CEO Mark Hurd insists otherwise. Said Hurd, “HP is a market leader executing well in a tough market.”

Analysts begged to differ. “PC revenue declined 19 percent, server storage declined 18 percent, year over year,” Pacific Crest Securities analyst Brent Bracelin told Reuters. “Their printer hardware business declined more than 30 percent, year over year. The pace of the erosion in hardware was more severe than we expected….They did a good job of managing expenses in the quarter, but as you think about the fundamentals here going forward, they lowered their guidance from a revenue and profitability standpoint, and certainly we don’t have a ton of confidence, given the pace of erosion in their business. There could be further erosion from here.”

Alcatel-Lucent, the world’s largest maker of telecommunications equipment, won’t be quite so large come 2009. This morning the struggling Franco-American network supplier said it plans to sack 1,000 managers and 5,000 contractors in a bid to bring down costs. “The new management team is committed to rapidly executing this new strategy and leveraging the new streamlined organization,” CEO Ben Verwaayen said in a statement. We are focused on delivering results and restoring profitability.”

This latest swing of the ax brings total job cuts at Alcatel-Lucent (ALU) to about 22,500 since the 2006 merger that created it. And though the company will be leaner and meaner for it, that new found agility won’t count for much without a shift in business strategy bold enough to reverse the brutal reduction in market share and market capitalization Alcatel-Lucent has suffered. And an oblique and, frankly, baffling mention of Web 2.0, does not a business strategy make.

Alcatel-Lucent’s plan is to “combine the trusted capabilities of the network environment with the creative communications services of the Web (Web 2.0, Web 3.0 and beyond).” What the hell does that mean?

For a while there, it looked like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) was really going to take Intel (INTC) to the mat, didn’t it? But not lately. After seven consecutive quarterly losses, AMD shares fell to a six-year low last month, down 50 percent in the past year. Good thing, then, that the company has chosen to sell off its digital television business, which these days is more of a distraction than anything else. This morning, the struggling chipmaker said Broadcom (BRCM) has agreed to buy its TV unit for $192.8 million.
