			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/09/jobs-2.0-250x187.jpg" alt="jobs-2.0" title="jobs-2.0" width="250" height="187" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-24614" /> While the highlight of the week was undoubtedly Apple’s Rock and Roll event on Wednesday featuring <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/return-of-the-steve/D52F0B28-31B7-46F3-8E84-57009AA262EA">Steve Jobs 2.0,</a> that was only the anodized aluminum, candy-colored, video-shooting cherry on top of another week of tech sector reporting from All Things Digital. </p>
<p>BoomTown was abuzz with Pixis, Plums and power this week as Kara focused on tech that wasn’t Apple, and reminded us that lady geeks hold the power in Silicon Valley. </p>
<p>While Apple was gathering clouds for its Rock and Roll storm, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090909/teeny-tiny-pixi-phone-from-palm-tries-killing-giant-hype-for-apple-event-today/">Palm (PALM) released the teeny Pixi</a>, designed, Palm hopes, to steal some of that Apple (AAPL) thunder. The Pixi smart phone, while smaller and thinner, reported Kara, has fewer features and less power than the already available Pre. </p>
<p>Small can be good in the world of tech, and BoomTown reported that a certain Nordic tech behemoth thinks so too. Nokia (NOK) announced that it had <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090911/nokia-acquires-san-francisco-microsocial-networking-start-up-plum/">acquired &#8220;microsocial networking&#8221; start-up Plum</a>, whose signature offering allows users to build smaller, more intimate electronic social networks. </p>
<p>Kara did it &#8220;like a boss&#8221; this week and highlighted the tech sector mavens from <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090911/yahoos-bartz-8-facebooks-sandberg-22-googles-mayer-22-and-more-techies-makes-fortunes-50-most-powerful-women-list/">Fortune magazine’s annual list of most powerful women</a>. Ursula Burns of Xerox (XRX), IBM-er (IBM) Ginni Rometty and Oracle (ORCL) President Safra Catz were among those at the top. BoomTown will be at the upcoming conference associated with the Fortune list, so look for Kara’s Flip video interviews with these Titanias of tech. </p>
<p>It was nice of Apple to release new iPods just in time for John’s birthday this week, and Digital Daily returned the favor with high-bandwidth, hard-rockin&#8217; coverage of Apple’s music-themed event, complete with <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/apple-music-event-photos/">live photos</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-itunes-9/">blogging</a>. John liked the video feature of the new iPod nano, but focused on the biggest news of the week&#8211;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090910/qotd-189/">Apple’s upgraded CEO</a>. </p>
<p>Digital Daily’s Apple coverage didn’t stop at The Steve. Ever since announcement of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090910/apple-to-extend-att%E2%80%99s-iphone-exclusivity-deal/">exclusive Apple-AT&#038;T (T) partnership</a>, current and would-be iPhone freaks have speculated as to what kind of deal will be struck when that contract expires. John reported that iSuppli prognosticators think the agreement may be extended when it runs out in 2010. </p>
<p>John closed out the week with Twitter leaks about the newest incarnation of Microsoft’s (MSFT) Google-toppler (GOOG), Bing. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090911/bing-2-0-sexy/">Microsoft showcased Bing 2.0</a> at the annual company meeting, which some employees took as a green light to tweet away about the unreleased product. Microsoft HQ was more tight-lipped, telling John only that the rollout would happen over the next few months. </p>
<p>MediaMemo followed the money this week&#8211;specifically advertising dollars. A year after the Lehman collapse, Peter cited a <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090908/is-media-spending-up-it-better-be/">MediaPost survey that showed some growth</a> in ad spending. In a down market, Peter reminded, sometimes the only place to go, is up. Let&#8217;s hope so.</p>
<p>Not to be left out of Apple’s party, MediaMemo covered the release of an <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090911/all-the-music-you-can-eat-on-your-iphone-wall-street-snoozes/">iPhone app from RealNetworks</a> (RNWK) that brings all-you-can-eat music for a monthly fee. Wall Street barely blinked at the deal, but changes may come if the service catches on as competitor Spotify has in Europe. </p>
<p>And while the NFL won’t let players tweet from the end zone, it is upping its tech quotient by bringing <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090911/are-you-ready-for-some-football-on-your-browser-you-may-have-no-choice/">blacked-out games to your Internet browser</a>. MediaMemo reported that the lower-attendance games would be available to tech-savvy sports nuts&#8211;after midnight on game day. Get out the Fritos and espresso, guys, its game time.</p>
<p>True to form as the Lincoln of our very own <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090909/mount-techmore-pogue-baig-levy-and-mossberg-at-apple-event/">Mt. Techmore</a>, Walt’s address this week was aimed at helping the wayward get back on track with a bevy of new <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090909/these-apps-help-users-of-iphones-find-their-way/">iPhone navigation apps</a>. This new breed of high dollar apps harnesses the power of the iPhone 3GS to replace those ever present dash top GPS navigation units. </p>
<p>Walt extended his techno-presidential benevolence with another installment of <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090909/mossbergs-mailbox-10/">Mossberg’s Mailbox</a>. Networked storage, Quicken for Mac and the ominously impending switch to Windows 7 were all up for discussion. </p>
<p>At the Mossberg Solution, <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090908/a-program-that-makes-your-inbox-less-scary/">Katie tested Postbox</a>, software designed to bring novel management solutions to your inbox.  Developed by some of the guys from Mozilla, Postbox does offer lots of great features, Katie said, even if the switch to the new tools might not be easy for all. </p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/06/palm1.jpg" alt="palm1" title="palm1" width="200" height="210" class="alignright size-full wp-image-20265" />Too bad Palm launched the Pre a week after the close of its fiscal fourth quarter. If it had brought the device to market earlier, <a href="http://files.shareholder.com/downloads/PALM/670011081x0x302996/fc5f86a8-8a30-4c60-93ca-347e9d3797b9/PalmReportsQ4AndFY09Results.pdf">the quarterly results it posted Thursday afternoon</a> might have been even better. </p>
<p>Wall Street had expected Palm (PALM) to report a loss of 62 cents a share on revenue of $80.6 million. Instead, the company reported a net loss of $105 million, or 78 cents a share. <strong>But, excluding some items, the loss came to 40 cents a share</strong>. Revenue was $86.8 million, down from the $296 million Palm posted in the year-ago quarter. Palm shipped a total of 351,000 smartphones during the quarter, a year-over-year decline of 62 percent. But this was a six percent increase over the third quarter.</p>
<p>“The launch of Palm webOS and Palm Pre was a major milestone in Palm’s transformation; we have now officially reentered the race,” Palm CEO Jon Rubinstein said in a statement. “We have more to accomplish, but the groundwork is laid for a very promising future here at Palm. Our senior management team is capable, motivated and focused on execution; there is a large group of developers waiting to build great applications for Palm webOS; and we have a new product pipeline that we think will set a standard for the industry.”</p>
<p>Palm shares are spiking on the news. They&#8217;re up more than 10 percent in after-hours trading at $15.47.</p>
<p><b>Some notes from the earnings call:</b></p>
<p>Palm is not disclosing any data on Pre sales to date&#8230;.Asked about the idea of licensing webOS to other vendors, Rubinstein declined comment, but interestingly said it “isn’t a religious issue” for the company.</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on Web 3.0:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;The Pre takes better advantage of the benefits of Web 3.0 than any other mobile device available today.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on the Pre&#8217;s launch:</strong><br />
&#8220;I couldn&#8217;t be happier with our launch. We are exactly where we hoped we would be.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on supply constraints:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;The factory is ramping really well. But if demand increases, we&#8217;ll have to chase it a bit.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on competing with Apple (AAPL) and RIM (RIMM):</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;There is room for three to five players in this space. We don&#8217;t have to beat one another to prosper.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on new carrier partners:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;As you know, we’ve launched with Sprint and we’ve announced Bell Mo up in Canada. You’ve heard a lot of interest out there and we are very flattered that lots of carriers are interested in Web OS and the Pre and we are obviously working on expanding our distribution but we have nothing to announce at this point in time.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on the webOS software development kit:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re eager to grant wider access to our SDK but we need to do so in a measured and methodical fashion, so we can be sure we are providing a great development experience. Over the next few weeks, we expect the program to grow from hundreds to thousands of developers and our goal from there is to make our SDK available to everyone by the end of this summer.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on the early market for the Pre:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;I think we’re exactly where we hoped we would be. We don’t have a lot of data yet, but one of the interesting things we’ve been seeing is a lot of enterprise interest right now.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>Rubinstein on how the Pre’s App Catalog can compete with rivals like the iTunes App Store:</strong></p>
<p>&#8220;You’ll just have to stay tuned and see how it all rolls out.&#8221;</p>

Despite the magnitude of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090303/palm-you-thought-q2-was-bad-get-a-load-of-q3/">the third-quarter miss the company warned of Tuesday</a>, its shares are <a href="http://www.google.com/finance?q=palm">trading higher today</a>, at one point reaching a peak of $7.86. It seems the market&#8217;s so taken with the Pre that it&#8217;s willing to overlook a jaw-dropping $70 million revenue shortfall. </p>
<p>Indeed, in a note to clients this morning, Piper Jaffray analyst Michael Walkley upgraded Palm to a buy, suggesting the Pre will finally bring an end to the company&#8217;s streak of crappy financial quarters. &#8220;We believe several carriers plan to launch the Palm Pre, and despite the challenging macro environment, we anticipate this unique product will resonate with consumers,&#8221; Walkley wrote. &#8220;We believe the ramp of Pre smart phones will result in a significant earnings recovery.&#8221;</p>
<p>And perhaps it will. Buzz around the device continues to build, with some consumers postponing new handset purchases in anticipation of the Pre. But Palm (PALM) better act soon. Because the longer it waits to bring the device to market, the closer we are to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) next refresh of the iPhone, which will invariably suck all the air out of the smartphone room.</p>

Fueling the panic: obvious concerns about Jobs&#8217;s well-being. And, of course, speculation that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081215/oh-one-more-thing-goldman-sachs-youre-dead-to-me/">Macworld is likely to disappoint devotees</a> hoping for the introduction of some insanely great new product.</p>
<p>A quick thought on that last point: <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=967817996&#038;play=1">CNBC&#8217;s Jim Goldman says he&#8217;s sure</a> Jobs&#8217;s decision to skip the Macworld keynote has nothing to do with his health. If that&#8217;s the case, tapping Phil Schiller to deliver the company&#8217;s final Macworld &#8220;Stevenote&#8221; likely has more to do with Apple&#8217;s acrimonious relationship with Macworld organizer IDG than anything else. Given the media attention the company&#8217;s able to command these days, Apple no longer really needs events like Macworld. The company&#8217;s special events are equally as effective in generating publicity and far easier to orchestrate and control. </p>
<p>So would Apple really send Senior VP Phil Schiller out onto the Macworld stage without a cool new product to introduce? Probably. So much for that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081216/an-apple-netbook-at-macworld-2009/">netbook</a> &#8230;</p>

<p>In a note to clients this morning, Ezra Gottheil of Technology Business Research speculates that Apple (AAPL) will indeed launch a new product category at Macworld in early January. A netbook designed to leverage Apple&#8217;s design prowess and its online delivery system as well. &#8220;[The device] will provide Web access, email, media playing, and essential applications at a single low price,&#8221; Gottheil writes. &#8220;Computer beginners will be able to start using it quickly and easily. Users will have fewer questions, problems, conflicts and security breaches, as the device will be less intimidating than both PCs and Macs. As with the iPhone, iTunes and the App Store will offer an array of content, applications and games. As with the iPhone, the software can be rebuilt from the App Store. With an optional online backup service, the entire device can be restored&#8230;. Because all applications are delivered through the iTunes App Store, Apple will maintain sustained relationships with users, making it easier to upsell and cross-sell to existing customers. TBR believes Apple will make online services like MobileMe increasingly attractive to all customers, but purchasers of the new Apple device may find its simplicity especially appealing.&#8221;</p>
<p>Now, I know Gottheil&#8217;s the guy who said &#8220;Apple doesn’t need Jobs anymore&#8221;&#8211;blasphemy! But the scenario he lays out above makes quite a bit of sense, doesn&#8217;t it?</p>
<p>If such a device is indeed uncrated at Macworld, Gottheil expects it will arrive at market around midyear at prices beginning at $599&#8211;$99 more than the $500 computer Apple CEO Steve Jobs claims the company doesn&#8217;t know how to make&#8230;.</p>

Today brought with it nasty news for Motorola. <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122850564938683529.html">Standard &#038; Poor&#8217;s slashed its corporate credit rating</a> on <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081030/motorolas-latest-quarter-a-real-stnkr/">the long-suffering handset maker</a>, noting that the company&#8217;s troubled mobile business is likely to continue what is already a two-year downward slide. “Revenues and profits in the first part of the year will be challenged by a narrower, somewhat-dated product portfolio,” S&#038;P’s Bruce Hyman said in a statement. “Standard &#038; Poor’s also expects about 10 percent fewer handsets to be sold worldwide in 2009 at lower average prices than in 2008.”</p>
<p>An ugly blow for Motorola (MOT). With the economy in a deadspin and stronger rivals like Nokia (NOK) <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20081204/nokia/">lowering handset sale expectations</a>, things are looking decidedly bleak for the company.</p>

With registration down by 20 percent over last year, there are likely to be far fewer attendees at the annual marquee Apple (AAPL) event, and with a growing list of companies pulling out of the show, there&#8217;ll be fewer booths for them to crowd. Earlier this week, Adobe (ADBE) said <a href="http://www.macworld.com/article/137244/2008/12/adobeexpo.html">it had decided against exhibiting on the show floor</a>. And now <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/12/04/more_big_names_downsizing_pulling_out_of_macworld_expo.html">a coterie of other companies is joining it</a>, top among them, Belkin, long one of Macworld&#8217;s largest exhibitors.</p>
<p>Belkin has confirmed that it&#8217;s pulling its booth from the show floor as well. The company has opted instead to hold private meetings with its channel partners. It insists that this isn&#8217;t so much a financial decision, as a strategic one&#8211;&#8221;we&#8217;re reallocating show floor funds to hold private product meetings,&#8221; a spokesperson told me&#8211;but it&#8217;s hard not to view it that way, given the continued deterioration of the economy. Interesting to note, though, that sources tell AppleInsider that the company had already paid for its 2009 booth space.</p>
<p>Show organizer IDG must be offering Econalypse refunds&#8230;.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Belkin won&#8217;t be exhibiting at the Consumer Electronics Show, either. &#8220;No booth at CES&#8211;and it&#8217;s for the same reasons why we&#8217;re not exhibiting at MacWorld,&#8221; a spokesperson tells me. &#8220;We learned that a smaller group of our channel partners will be attending CES, and those who are attending are focusing on driving incremental value in 2009. We believe that private meetings in hotel suites are more conducive for this type of discussion, as they are more intimate. So, we are redistributing our resources and funds to help support sell-thru for our retail partners and drive traffic into their stores. Examples: more holiday promotions and programs.&#8221;</p>
<p>As of this morning, no participants&#8211;potential or otherwise&#8211;have pulled out of Super Bowl XLIII, but the trend is looking grim for seasonal blockbusters. We&#8217;ll keep you posted.</p>

After market close Tuesday, RIM (RIMM) said revenues for the three months ended November will fall short of its earlier forecast. The Blackberry maker expects to report Q3 sales of $2.75-$2.85 billion, up 65 percent from a year earlier, but less than its earlier outlook of $2.95-$3.10 billion. &#8220;Initial sales of new products have been very positive, and we believe we have the strongest smartphone portfolio in the industry by far,&#8221; <a href="http://press.rim.com/release.jsp?id=1963">RIM co-chief executive Jim Balsillie said in a statement</a>. &#8220;However, product-launch timing, general economic conditions and foreign-exchange volatility have tempered our results in the third quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p>A likely explanation. There&#8217;s little doubt <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=11062">the botched debut of the new Blackberry Storm</a> undermined RIM&#8217;s performance this quarter. But perhaps there&#8217;s something more at work here as well&#8211;like the quality of RIM&#8217;s handsets themselves. &#8220;We think an additional factor is a poor reception to the much-anticipated Storm and Bold,&#8221; <a href="http://www.marketwatch.com/news/story/Research-In-Motion-cuts-profit/story.aspx?guid=%7B9DA83627%2DCB44%2D4120%2D8B11%2D6B3975F03DE8%7D">analysts at Deutsche Bank wrote in a client note</a>. &#8220;We think the Storm has numerous flaws and the functionality of both devices is largely unchanged from previous devices.&#8221;</p>
