Tuesday’s presidential election was a historic one for more than just the obvious reasons. Monomaniacal interest in its outcome drove Internet usage to a new record. According to Akamai Technologies, which operates a content delivery network that includes the likes of CNN, NBC, and the BBC, traffic to its member news sites reached 8.57 million visitors-per-minute at 11 p.m. EST, right around the time Barack Obama delivered his victory speech.

Yahoo Video: You’ve Come a Long Way, Baby

The economic crisis has been as much a boon for Yahoo as a bane. Earlier this week, we noted that Yahoo’s share of the search market had increased slightly, thanks to investors obsessively checking Yahoo Finance and its Stock Message Boards. It seems that morbid interest in the stock market’s decline is driving up Yahoo video streams as well.

From Plumber of the Internet to Plumber of the Economy?

When he appeared at our D5 conference in May 2007, Sen. John McCain said that, given the chance, he’d hire Cisco CEO John Chambers for his cabinet. Now, in the run-up to the November presidential election, it looks like Chambers has some competition for that spot. In an interview with Reuters, McCain said that Chambers is still on his short list of potential Treasury secretaries, but the Cisco CEO has some company.
