			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>A noteworthy metric in <a href="http://gs.statcounter.com/#mobile_browser-ww-monthly-200901-200905">the latest mobile browser share report</a> from StatCounter: RIM’s BlackBerry has been making some meaningful gains in the world-wide mobile browser market. According to the research house, which tracks page views by browser on mobile devices and the desktop, RIM (RIMM) has boosted its share of the market quite a bit since the beginning of this year. Between January and May, BlackBerry mobile Web share rose from 4.9 percent to 6.9 percent in May. </p>

<p>Impressive growth, though RIM’s still got a way to go before it catches up with its rivals. Opera continues to hold the top spot with a share of 25.4 percent, followed by Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone at 20.8 percent, Nokia&#8217;s (NOK) 19.3 percent and 14 percent for the iPod touch. Note as well that Android continues to flat-line, though presumably that will change with the release of new devices using the OS.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>AOL’s ad revenue may be “falling off a cliff,” <a href="http://www.cnbc.com/id/15840232?video=714150131&amp;play=1">according to CNBC’s David Faber</a>, but its traffic&#8217;s not half bad. AOL (TWX) said today that <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB120908335534743525.html">page views to its Web sites hit an all-time high in March</a>, according to comScore (SCOR) Media Metrix. <a href="http://www.news.com/8301-10784_3-9928796-7.html">Page views grew 28% during the month, and are up 35% year-over-year. Unique visitors rose 11% year-over-year to 56.5 million</a>.  </p>
<p>AOL attributes the double-digit growth to a year-long redesign and rebranding effort, which ironically included a de-emphasizing of the AOL brand. &#8220;If I call a hip-hop site AOL Hip Hop,&#8221; said Bill Wilson, executive vice president of AOL Vertical Programming, &#8220;that just won&#8217;t resonate with consumers.&#8221;</p>

<p>What&#8217;s going on here? Who knows. But it might be time for the company to stop reading its press and start thinking seriously about taking <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20071011/update-of-facebook-funding-update-googles-hail-mary-pass/">some of the cash being flashed its way</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;Facebook has an enormous opportunity, and if the company doesn&#8217;t blow it, it could be worth every bit of $15 billion,&#8221; <a href="http://www.alleyinsider.com/2007/10/facebooks-15b-m.html">writes Silicon Alley Insider&#8217;s Henry Blodget</a>.  &#8220;Part of not blowing it, however, means playing the odds, and when investors are literally begging you to take their cash (as they appear to be), the odds almost always favor taking some of it. Why? Because the economy might weaken tomorrow, taking Internet advertising spending down with it.  Because a competitor might develop an interesting solution that [CEO Mark] Zuckerberg might want to buy. Because the stock market might crash, converting Facebook&#8217;s $15 billion valuation into $5 billion (or less). Because Zuckerberg might do something stupid (sorry&#8211;this has to be considered a possibility). Because in all of these cases and more, it would be nice to have $500 million in the bank.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Looks like <a href="http://mashable.com/2007/05/22/web2-spelling/">vowels won&#8217;t be the only accoutrements to be tossed aside</a> in the rise of Web 2.0. The venerable page view is to be abandoned as well. This morning measurement firm Nielsen/NetRatings said it will no longer use page views as its primary metric for comparing sites, but will instead rank them by total user time spent onsite.</p>
<p>Why the sudden change? The increasing popularity of AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), which allows a Web site to refresh content without reloading an entire page,  demanded it. &#8220;It is not that page views are irrelevant now, but they are a less accurate gauge of total site traffic and engagement,&#8221; <a href="http://www.computerworld.com.au/index.php/id;1497013742;fp;16;fpid;0">said Scott Ross, director of product marketing at Nielsen/NetRatings</a>. &#8220;Total minutes is the most accurate gauge to compare between two sites. If [Web] 1.0 is full-page refreshes for content, Web 2.0 is, &#8216;How do I minimize page views and deliver content more seamlessly?&#8217; &#8220;</p>
<p>Yeah, that or <a href="http://www.mikeindustries.com/blog/archive/2006/04/myspace-click-factory">how do I inflate my page views </a> and <a href="http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20051102/1118219_F.shtml">capitalize on the resulting publicity</a>.</p>
<p>Anyway &#8230; one possible result of Nielsen&#8217;s adoption of time onsite as its primary metric of audience measurement will be a decline in rank for Google. After all, no one really spends much time on the site. We visit, conduct our search, and then we&#8217;re off. That said, the company could probably care less about such things. If Google has taught us anything, it&#8217;s that the most meaningful metric for success on the Web is not page views, but profitability. </p>
