Moments ago, American Express (AXP) <a href="http://www.tedstake.com/2009/11/18/american-express-to-acquire-revolution-money/">announced plans to acquire Revolution Money</a>, the online payments outfit they’ve been working on since 2007, for about $300 million. A nice exit for Revolution, which was valued at less than $200 million during its last funding round earlier this year. </p>
<p>A savvy move for Amex, too. Though Revolution competes against entrenched credit-card companies and PayPal, among others, its alternative payment system, which reduces costs for accepting credit cards by up to 75 percent, is quite attractive to merchants who’ve shouldered those costs for so long.  </p>
<p>Says JP Morgan analyst Imran Khan: &#8220;While it is hard to know precisely what direction AmEx plans to take the Revolution assets, we think the acquisition suggests the company is trying to be more aggressive in the online payments arena. We think PayPal’s existing account base and international footprint have given it a network advantage in the C2C space that is hard to dislodge. On the other hand, we believe significant room exists for market share gains in Online Payments by companies that offer innovative solutions, and this acquisition gives Revolution Money a stronger backer.&#8221;</p>

This according to &#8220;people familiar with the matter,&#8221; who tell Bloomberg that <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=newsarchive&amp;sid=afcIzFP3iNrY">Cupertino was also interested in the mobile advertising company</a>. </p>
<p>Odd to learn that Apple (AAPL) was considering such a move. After all, advertising isn’t exactly one of its core businesses, though it might have become one had it managed to buy AdMob, which is one of the largest sellers of advertisements on the iPhone. </p>
<p>&#8220;If a lot of traffic goes through my devices, why can’t I become the middleman that serves ads against that inventory?&#8221; said IDC analyst Karsten Weide. &#8220;AdMob would have allowed them to do that quickly.&#8221;</p>
<p>Indeed. If that’s what Apple wanted. And perhaps the company is interested in expanding into online advertising, as this <a href="http://ipwatchdog.com/patents/US20090265214.pdf">“Advertising in Operating System” patent</a> seems to <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/15/business/15digi.html?_r=1&amp;scp=1&amp;sq=stross&amp;st=cse">suggest</a>. </p>
<p>That said, it’s equally conceivable that Apple met with AdMob hoping to temper Google’s (GOOG) fast-expanding footprint in the mobile space and on the iPhone. With the acquisition of AdMob, the search sovereign is now the Internet&#8217;s largest mobile advertising company, with a dominant presence on the iPhone and any handset running its Android OS. Perhaps Apple’s intent was simply to make this a more costly endeavor for Google. But perhaps it was something more. </p>

Called <a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2009/10/introducing-google-social-search-i.html">Google Social Search</a>, the new offering is intended to make search results more relevant by enhancing them with personalized social data. </p>
<p>As Google’s Maureen Heymans puts it, &#8220;Your friends and contacts are a key part of your life online. Most people on the web today make social connections and publish web content in many different ways, including blogs, status updates and tweets. This translates to a public social web of content that has special relevance to each person.&#8221;</p>
<p>So, for example, a search for a nearby restaurant would return not only the standard list of official Web sites and mainstream media reviews, but also informal comments made by friends on the Web.</p>
<p>It’s <a href="http://searchengineland.com/google-social-search-launches-gives-results-from-your-trusted-social-circle-28507">an interesting idea</a>&#8211;using the blogs, status updates and tweets from trusted users to refine our searches and make them more personally relevant to us. </p>
<p>That said, there’s a fine line to be tread here between sharing information within a social network and protecting privacy. Of course, as Google (GOOG) notes, the information that it’s indexing is already published publicly on the Web and you need to be signed in to a Google account to access it. So presumably, information that isn’t public won’t show up in social search. Says Google: &#8220;What we&#8217;ve done is surface that content together in one single place to make your results more relevant.&#8221;</p>

Revenue decreased 8.9 percent to $336.6 million. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters projected earnings of 13 cents on revenue of $335 million.</p>

This morning, the DVD-by-mail pioneer said that beginning sometime next month, <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Coming-Soon-Netflix-Members-prnews-1878759343.html/print?x=0">owners of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game consoles will be able to stream movies and TV shows from Netflix</a>. </p>
<p>The feature, which brings an unlimited amount of online viewing with any subscription worth $9 or more, will initially require an &#8220;instant streaming Blu-ray disc&#8221; to enable it. Not the most elegant of implementations, but presumably a firmware upgrade will likely follow and bake the feature into the PS3. </p>
<p>For Netflix (NFLX), the deal provides a chance to broaden its subscriber base. About nine million PlayStation 3 systems have been sold in U.S., and more than 25 million worldwide. So the potential for new customers here is substantial. For Sony (SNE), which already offers movies and TV shows to PS 3 users for a $3 to $4 fee, it’s a way of removing an Xbox 360 marketing advantage Microsoft (MSFT) has been lording over it since this past August.</p>

This morning it unveiled an expanded online store that will better reflect its new real-world counterpart.</p>
<p>&#8220;On the new online Microsoft Store, we’ve added a bunch of new products, including Windows 7 PCs as well as select 3rd party software and accessories,&#8221; <a href="http://trevinchow.com/blog/2009/10/21/the-new-microsoft-store-launches-with-windows-7/">Trevin Chow, senior lead program manager for Microsoft Store, said in a blog post announcing the move</a>. &#8220;And let’s not forget a ton of gaming products that have been added including a bunch of the top selling Xbox 360 titles.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting. Not exactly sure what the upside is to selling PCs online when you don&#8217;t make them. It&#8217;s not like Microsoft (MSFT) will be offering a better experience than, say, Best Buy (BBY), HP (HPQ) or Dell (DELL). And an online outlet doesn&#8217;t afford the company the same opportunity to cultivate the &#8220;Microsoft Experience&#8221; it&#8217;s clearly going for in its brick-and-mortar outlets. So why bother? </p>
<p>A unified experience online and off, I suppose. And, if the infrastructure is in place to sell through one channel, why not sell through both? Of course, the downside is that if you don&#8217;t execute well, you risk giving customers another lousy experience with which to associate your products.</p>

Not that it mattered much. Investors took eBay out to the woodshed anyway, beating its shares down seven percent in after-hours trading. An unfortunate turn of events considering that eBay&#8217;s stock hit a 52-week high earlier in the day.</p>
<p>The online auctioneer reported revenue of $2.23 billion, up six percent from a year ago, while net income fell 29 percent to $350 million or 27 cents per share. Excluding some items, earnings were 38 cents a share. Analysts who follow eBay expected the company to turn in a gain of 37 cents per share on sales of $2.14 billion. </p>
<p>Gross merchandise volume&#8211;the value of all goods sold via eBay&#8211;rose seven percent from the same period last year. Analysts had believed it would drop between five and 10 percent.</p>
<p>EBay said it sees fourth-quarter earnings of 38 cents to 40 cents a share, on revenue of $2.2 billion to $2.3 billion.</p>
<p> &#8220;Our third quarter results were strong, with PayPal gaining momentum and market share worldwide and our core eBay business showing positive trends,&#8221; John J. Donahoe, eBay’s chief executive, said in a statement.</p>

Because according to the results of Piper Jaffray’s 18th biannual Teen Survey, Apple devices continue to do well with American teenagers. (See table below; click to enlarge.)</p>
<p>Consider these metrics:</p>
<p>Of the teens Piper Jaffray surveyed,</p>
<ul>
<li>15 percent own iPhones (up from eight percent six months ago)</li>
<li>22 percent plan to buy an iPhone in the next six months</li>
<li>87  percent own iPods (up from 86 percent six months ago) </li>
<li>93 percent of the 40 percent who legally purchase music online use iTunes</li>
</ul>
<p>Music to Apple’s (AAPL) ears, right? &#8220;Apple&#8217;s dominance in the CE and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked, capped by market saturation for iPod and iTunes usage,&#8221; Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster writes in his analysis. </p>
<p>&#8220;Also, interest in the iPhone remains high&#8230;We believe the $99 iPhone 3G has been a meaningful part of share gains in the last six months. Previously, teens were indicating that the plan pricing and handset pricing were too high for them (and their parents) to buy iPhones. The lower pricing appears to have been a catalyst for share gains. Also, the popularity of the App Store and the quality of games available for the iPhone have likely led to the gains among the teen demographic in recent months.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster’s conclusion: &#8220;Apple is taking its leading position in music and mobile markets.&#8221;<br />

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/images.jpeg" alt="images" title="images" width="130" height="130" class="alignright size-full wp-image-26039" />Google and Verizon Wireless have evidently gotten over their <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/tag/700mhz-spectrum-auction/">700-MHz spectrum auction</a>-inspired differences. This morning, <a href="http://www.prnewswire.com/news-releases/groundbreaking-agreement-between-verizon-wireless-and-google-to-leverage-high-speed-network-and-open-android-platform-for-wireless-innovation-63587582.html">the two companies announced an agreement</a> to deliver mobile applications and devices. Under its terms, the companies will develop several Android-based devices preloaded with apps designed by Google, Verizon and others.</p>
<p>&#8220;Integral to this agreement is a commitment by the companies to devote substantial resources to accelerate delivery of leading-edge innovation that will put unique applications in the hands of consumers quickly,&#8221; the companies said in a joint release. &#8220;The two industry leaders will create, market and distribute products and services, with Verizon Wireless also contributing the breadth of its nationwide distribution channels. Consumers will be able to purchase products resulting from the collaboration in Verizon Wireless retail and online stores.&#8221;</p>
<p>The first new phones are expected at market within weeks. Two will be released before the end of the year and they will, according to Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam, support Google Voice. They&#8217;ll also come with Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android Market preinstalled. So Verizon (VZ) is not favoring its own app store here. There will apparently be netbooks as well, though the companies haven&#8217;t yet said when.</p>
<p>During a conference call to discuss the announcement, Google CEO Eric Schmidt applauded Verizon’s &#8220;openness,&#8221; saying it was &#8220;frankly, enormously surprising, given the history and the old-line nature of telcos&#8230;.In Verizon, somehow, the leadership has decided to embrace a very different philosophy, which works very, very well with the Internet.&#8221; Schmidt didn’t go into specifics beyond that, but presumably he was referring to Verizon’s willingness to allow Google Voice on its phones&#8211;something Apple (AAPL) hasn’t yet done with the iPhone despite continuing controversy.</p>
<p>Asked during the same call if Verizon would allow Google Voice, Verizon Wireless CEO Lowell McAdam said it would. &#8220;Either you have an open device or not,&#8221; he said. &#8220;This will be open.&#8221;</p>
<p>The deal is potentially a big one for Google. Verizon serves some 87 million customers. Putting some slick Android phones in front of them could do much to bolster Google’s standing in the wireless market.</p>

Less than a week after <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090924/gmail-outage/">Google’s Gmail suffered its fourth service disruption this year</a>, IBM debuted <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/10/01/look-whos-launching-an-email-service/">a competing Web mail service</a> intended to undercut it. Called <a href="https://www.lotuslive.com/en/services/inotes">LotusLive iNotes</a> it’s an email, calendaring, and contact management system aimed squarely at the enterprise space Google has been so diligently courting. </p>
<p>Priced at about $36 per user per year, iNotes is cheaper than Google’s (GOOG) Apps Premier Edition offering, which costs about $50 per user per year. And while it might not offer as many bells and whistles (IBM&#8217;s 1GB of storage is significantly less than the 25GB that Google provides), IBM (IBM) claims it more than makes up for it in security, reliability and privacy. </p>
<p>&#8220;We run the world&#8217;s most mission critical systems for banks, telcos and utilities,&#8221; <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2009/10/01/google-gmail-inotes-technology-cio-network-ibm.html">said Sean Poulley, IBM&#8217;s vice president of online collaboration services</a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s fair to say we&#8217;re pretty trusted&#8230;.<a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5jloINmJkx7rWSO62mBj0ZPHv8wOQD9B2LNG02">Candidly, Google has shown itself to be weak</a>&#8230;.There is a world of difference between supporting a consumer-grade service and a business-grade service. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/o2-iphone-uk.jpg" alt="o2-iphone-uk" title="o2-iphone-uk" width="250" height="283" class="alignright size-full wp-image-25776" /> Well this certainly doesn’t bode well for O2: The U.K. wireless carrier, which has reportedly been selling about 2,200 iPhones a day since it secured exclusive distribution rights to the device in 2007, has <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technology/apple/6248263/O2-sells-out-of-iPhone-3GS.html">run out of the 3GS model</a>. </p>
<p>Rabid demand for the iPhone has emptied not just the company’s physical retail outlets, but its online store as well. &#8220;We continue to see extremely high levels of demand for the iPhone which means it comes in and out of stock very quickly and will be why the Web site hasn’t had any since Monday,&#8221; an O2 spokesperson told the Telegraph.</p>
<p>News of the shortage comes just days after O2 rivals <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090929/iphone-exclusivity-the-beginning-of-the-end/">Orange and Vodafone both announced plans to carry the iPhone later this year</a>, bringing an end to O2’s exclusivity deal with Apple (AAPL). If Apple is unable to meet consumer demand with just a single U.K. carrier, how will it cope with three?  </p>
<p>A reasonable question, but one for which Apple presumably has an answer. Said Forrester (FORR) analyst Mark Mulligan, &#8220;I don’t think [Apple] would expand if it couldn’t meet consumer demand, as that would lead to extreme consumer dissatisfaction&#8211;which compared to its peers, Apple is usually good at avoiding.&#8221;</p>

<p>Speaking at the FTTH Conference and Expo in Houston Tuesday, Verizon Communications CTO Richard Lynch said the broadband industry is headed toward a pricing paradigm shift that will see it <a href="http://gigaom.com/2009/09/29/metered-broadband-is-the-future-verizon-cto/">embrace the usage-based pricing common to the wireless broadband industry</a>. </p>
<p>Internet service providers &#8220;cannot continue to grow the Internet without passing the cost on to someone,&#8221; <a href="http://telephonyonline.com/residential_services/news/verizon-cto-metering-092909/">Lynch said in remarks reported by  Telephony Online</a>. &#8220;At the end of the day the concept of a flat-rate infinitely expandable service is unachievable. We are going to reach a point where we will sell packages of bytes. Now I’m not announcing a new pricing plan. But we have already gone this way in wireless because that is where the resource is most constrained.&#8221;</p>
<p>So while  Lynch may not have announced a new pricing plan, he’s clearly got one in mind. And these, the first public comments from Verizon (VZ) on a transition to metered bandwidth, likely mean the all-you-can-eat days are soon to end and <a href="http://www.dslreports.com/shownews/Verizon-Metered-Broadband-Is-Coming-104713">the &#8220;will this streaming video put me over my monthly usage cap&#8221; days about to begin</a>. </p>
<p>Which, as consumer advocates will tell you, is bad news because charging Internet customers based on how much Web data they consume is likely to stifle innovation by undermining demand for high-bandwidth services such as online video and whatnot.</p>
