This morning, the company&#8211;which <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090317/nokia-ramps-up-pink-slip-production/">sacked 1,700 employees in March</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090428/nok%E2%80%8E-nok%E2%80%8E-whos-there-not-you-any-more/">another 450 in April</a>&#8211;said it will <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Nokia-Continues-to-Streamline-prnews-1588743476.html?x=0&amp;.v=100">cut 330 more jobs</a> in its research and development group. But not to worry, says Nokia, that’s just two percent of the company&#8217;s 17,000-strong R&#038;D staff.</p>
<p>Another sad turn of events for Nokia (NOK), whose dominance of the smartphone market is being <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091111/nokia-apple/">steadily eroded</a> by competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM). In its latest quarter, the company’s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">smartphone market share declined to 35 percent</a> from 41 percent. This slide is likely to continue unless Nokia is able to inspire a major revival in its smartphone volumes with a worthy iPhone rival.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/nokpalm.jpg" alt="nokpalm" title="nokpalm" width="200" height="151" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28981" />Palm shares are trading higher today, bolstered by anticipation of the Nov. 15 launch of the Pixi, the company’s second webOS handset and by some <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&#038;sid=azoCe8En4bs8&#038;pos=7">silly rumors about a potential takeover by Nokia</a> (NOK). Does the company really need another software platform to add to Symbian, Maemo and Qt? C’mon. </p>
<p>At $12.34, Palm (PALM) is up well over seven percent as I write this, a nice gain that more than offset the four percent drop the company’s shares suffered last week. Clearly, the market is expecting a lot of the Pixi, and according to some analysts, it may get it. In a note to clients Friday, RBC analysts said they &#8220;expect positive consumer reception and healthy sell-through,&#8221; for the Pixi.</p>
<p>But not everyone agrees with RBC’s cheery assessment. Ashok Kumar, an analyst at Northeast Securities, has a much dimmer view of Palm&#8217;s prospects in the months ahead. He says his sell-through checks show a &#8220;substantial decline&#8221; in recent Pre sales. </p>
<p>&#8220;As a fading brand, carriers are likely to see better returns on their promotional and advertising dollars with other vendors,&#8221; Kumar writes. &#8220;WebOS has negligible smartphone OS share, 0.2 percent per Gartner estimates, and is unlikely to attract any meaningful third-party application support. Palm has bet the farm on webOS and there is a real possibility that they may not achieve critical mass.&#8221; </p>
<p> Perhaps. Perhaps not. We’ll see in the months ahead.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/steveWiphone-250x160.jpg" alt="steveWiphone" title="steveWiphone" width="250" height="160" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-28952" />Lest there be any doubt that Apple’s iPhone is redefining the smartphone market, consider this: In less than two and a half years, the device has managed to claim nearly a fifth of the worldwide market for smartphones.</p>
<p>According to <a href="http://www.gartner.com/it/page.jsp?id=1224645">new data released this week by Gartner</a>, Apple shipped some 7.04 million iPhones in the third quarter&#8211;up from just 4.72 million phones in the same period a year ago&#8211;for a 17.1 percent share of the market (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p>That’s a 49.2 percent year-over-year increase in sales and it puts Apple (AAPL) in spitting distance of Research in Motion (RIMM), which also posted close to a 50 percent year-over-year gain to claim 21 percent of smartphone sales during the period. </p>
<p>With 39 percent of smartphone sales, Nokia (NOK) was the top seller during the period, and it’s clearly not ceding its spot any time soon. But RIM might, given the small gap between its market share and Apple’s.</p>
<p>In any case, RIM clearly has a fight on its hands as we head in the holidays, especially if <a href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/11/05/att-gearing-up-to-launch-99-8gb-iphone-3gs/">Apple brings an 8GB iPhone 3GS to market in the next few weeks</a>.</p>

Why there&#8217;s a discrepancy between the company&#8217;s numbers and Gartner&#8217;s isn&#8217;t clear.</p>

<p><a href="http://strategyanalytics.com/default.aspx?mod=ReportAbstractViewer&amp;a0=5118">According to Strategy Analytics</a>, Apple’s third-quarter iPhone operating profit was $1.6 billion, while Nokia’s was $1.1 billion. Driving Apple’s profits: Strong sales, high wholesale prices and tight cost controls.</p>
<p>&#8220;We have identified at least 4 key factors underlying Apple’s success,&#8221; Strategy Analytics analyst Alexander Spektor explains. &#8220;First, Apple created a simple sub-brand&#8211;the iPhone&#8211;which was memorable and easy to remember. Second, the firm developed an attractive family of models with standout usability that enabled Apple to charge way-above-average prices to operators and consumers. Third, Apple distributed and co-marketed its handsets through top-tier carriers in numerous high-value countries. And fourth, the vendor has kept a solid grip on production costs by working with Foxconn, the world’s largest contract handset manufacturer.”</p>
<p>Quite an achievement for Apple (AAPL) and a major humiliation for Nokia (NOK), which has seen its dominance eroded by the likes of Apple and Research in Motion (RIMM), and not just in North America, but in Europe. Indeed, in its latest quarter <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">Nokia’s smart-phone market share dropped by six points</a>. </p>
<p>As Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston noted at the time, &#8220;[Nokia has] no iPhone killer to drive a major revival in its smartphone volumes. [It] is still struggling in the U.S. smartphone market, and with competition intensifying in China as well, Nokia’s battles can only get tougher in 2010.&#8221;</p>

Shipments of the devices rose 4.2 percent to 43.3 million globally compared with 41.5 million shipped in the third quarter of 2008. That’s up 3.2 percent from shipments of 41.9 million in the second quarter of this year, according to IDC&#8217;s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker report. </p>
<p>&#8220;Demand for converged mobile devices has remained strong all year,&#8221; said IDC analyst Ramon Llamas. Driving that demand: Nokia (NOK), which maintained its position as the overall leader in the converged mobile device market, Research In Motion (RIMM), whose BlackBerry made some significant share gains internationally, and Apple (AAPL) and the iPhone, whose share of the smart-phone market rose to 17.1 percent from 16.6 percent in the previous quarter (see table below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p>&#8220;Apple reached its highest volume yet in a single quarter,&#8221; Llamas said. &#8220;The nearly global availability of the iPhone 3GS sparked another round of annual replacements for Apple loyalists, while the lower price on the iPhone 3G put the device well within reach of customers wary of the price. Although the iPhone has struggled within emerging markets, its arrival at China Unicom this year could foreshadow greater shipment volumes.&#8221;</p>

<p>BoomTown’s week began onstage in front of thousands of chanting women. No, Kara wasn’t filling in for Oprah; she was doing something much cooler. She got snagged to moderate a panel entitled &#8220;Changing the World Through the Web&#8221; at Maria Shriver’s <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/changing-the-world-through-the-web-video-interviews-with-zuckerberg-kutcher-shah-and-rospars/">six-year-strong Women’s Conference</a>. Kara&#8217;s panel included a group of VIPs from Facebook, Kiva, Blue State Digital&#8211;and the Twitterific Ashton Kutcher. With &#8220;Mission: Kutcher&#8221; accomplished, Kara followed up with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091028/its-complicated-but-microhoo-also-hasnt-fallen-and-will-get-up/">complicated world of MicroHoo</a> and offered analysis on the <em>still</em>-pending search deal. Moral of the story: Commentators should give it time, and Carol Bartz should quit with the Jerry Yang jabs. BoomTown rounded out the week at <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20091029/kara-visits-tedmed-featuring-synthetic-skin-and-heart-scanning-iphones/">TEDMED</a>. The conference covered the scalpel’s edge of med tech. And yes, in case you were wondering, synthetic skin feels gross. </p>
<p>Digital Daily covered the real-time search war early in the week when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091026/twitter-bing-google-jeffries/">Microsoft’s Bing search folks announced a nonexclusive deal with Twitter</a> to feed on its data stream. The deal did put Bing out front for once, but no one knows if the new info source will turn into profits for either search group.  In a post foreshadowing a grisly murder, John reported results from a ChangeWave research study that placed the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091027/changewave/">iPhone within striking distance of overtaking the Blackberry</a> from Research in Motion (RIMM) in the smart-phone market. Okay, maybe it wasn’t that grisly, but it&#8217;s Halloween. Digital Daily rounded out the week by adding the iPhone to the pantheon of cat, dragon, rat and rooster that occupies the rim of your Chinese restaurant placemat. Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091030/iphone-china/">iPhone officially made it to China this week</a>, though without its signature Wi-Fi, and at a much heftier price point.</p>
<p>Peter Kafka lives at the crossroads of media and tech, and that’s exactly where he was almost run down by the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091026/microsoft-bails-out-of-family-guy-windows-7-episode-after-actually-watching-family-guy/">Windows 7 &#8220;Family Guy&#8221; episode</a>. Microsoft (MSFT) apparently bailed out of the deal when it took a closer look at what was actually inside. From the “not so fast” files, Peter covered a report from <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091028/whoops-are-reports-of-the-ad-recovery-greatly-exaggerated/">Interpublic Group</a> (IPG) noting that ad revenue isn’t quite as sunny as some have suggested. Grim economic times caught up to AllThingsD’s big brother late in the week when <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20091029/layoffs-come-to-the-wall-street-journal-too-boston-bureau-closing/">The Wall Street Journal closed its Boston bureau</a>. The move resulted in nine job losses, despite significant resources being poured into the paper by parent News Corp. (NWS). </p>
<p>The leaves are changing color over at Personal Technology, and Walt sensed that chill in the air meant it was time for his <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20091028/operating-systems-offer-new-choices-in-pc-shopping/">annual fall computer-buying guide</a>. Operating-system choice was a big discussion; but he also touched on the latest must-haves in the memory, graphics, processor and form-factor categories. With a cup of Earl Grey tea to fend off the autumn chill, Walt trudged out to <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20091028/running-windows-programs-on-macs/">Mossberg&#8217;s Mailbox</a> this week and came back with a fistful of letters. He dutifully replied to a question about migrating Microsoft files to a Mac running windows, offered clarification on the Windows 7 upgrade process, and weighed in on the rumor of a pending Apple device below a laptop but above an iPhone. </p>
<p>Katie finished it all off with a<a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20091027/netbooks-that-are-easier-on-the-eye/"> deep dive on the two latest netbooks</a>. The HP (HP) Mini 31 and the Nokia (NOK) Booklet 3G both offer high style compared with their competitors, and each boast much higher screen resolutions than previous models. Though she came down on the side of the Nokia, Katie remarked that neither option would disappoint. </p>
<p>Bundle up as you head out for tricking and treating, and learn from Weekend Update’s mistakes. Remember to check and make sure that scary face is actually a mask before you bring that new friend home. </p>

<p>Analysts mulling over <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091022/nokia-sues-apple/">Nokia’s IP infringment suit against Apple</a> seem to be of two minds about how the action will play out. There are those, like Neil Mawston at Strategy Analytics and Ben Wood at CCS Insight, who warn that Apple (AAPL) is on dangerous ground here at best. It’s almost impossible to build a cellphone without using Nokia’s (NOK) intellectual property, they claim. And if that’s the case with the iPhone, then <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/ousivMolt/idUSTRE59L3QU20091023">Apple could end up paying Nokia hundreds of millions of dollars in licensing fees</a> if Cupertino ends up on the losing side of this suit. <p>Some analysts, like Maynard Um of UBS, see Nokia’s action as a preemptory move against a possible infringement suit from Apple aimed at Nokia’s own multitouch handsets.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe Nokia&#8217;s suit could be a pre-emptive move ahead of its new handsets launching soon that may have multi-touch capabilities for which Apple has IP,&#8221; Um wrote in a note to clients this morning. &#8220;We would not be surprised if Apple eventually files an infringement suit if Nokia&#8217;s handsets are deemed to infringe its IP and we believe Nokia would prefer any court action to be combined as prior cases have been. We expect the legal process to be drawn out &#038; could involve US Patent Office reviews.&#8221;</p>
<p>The endgame here? Most likely an out-of-court settlement and cross-licensing agreements&#8211;assuming Apple’s willing. After all, Nokia is on record admitting its fondness for Apple’s technology.</p>
<p>Asked once about the striking similarities between a touchscreen device it was designing and Apple’s iconic handset, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia&#8217;s head of multimedia devices replied, &#8220;If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.&#8221;</p>

<p>Today, the Finnish cellphone giant, which has been struggling to develop a worthy competitor to the iPhone, <a href="http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases/showpressrelease?newsid=1349562">filed suit against Apple</a>, claiming the popular smart phone infringes upon a number of Nokia patents. </p>
<p>Specifically at issue here: 10 patents covering various wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption technologies. Nokia claims that every iPhone model shipped since 2007 has violated them. </p>
<p>&#8220;The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,&#8221; said Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president of legal &#038; intellectual property at Nokia (NOK). &#8220;Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia&#8217;s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia&#8217;s innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>To that point, Nokia says it has entered into license agreements with about 40 companies for these patents. Only Apple (AAPL) has refused. The obvious endgame here, then, is to force the iPhone maker to change its mind. </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that Nokia is not seeking an injunction; rather, we believe that the company has been in talks with Apple concerning a patent royalty payment for over a year,&#8221; Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a bulletin to clients. &#8220;With today&#8217;s announcement, it appears that the companies have not come to a resolution and Nokia is attempting to hasten the process. Nokia is likely looking to obtain a patent royalty of 1-2 percent ($6 to $12) on every iPhone sold in compensation for its IPs concerning GSM, 3G and WiFi technologies on mobile devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting that news of the suit comes just days after <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091019/apple-beats-street/">Apple announced its most successful financial quarter ever</a> at a time when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">Nokia is posting nasty losses</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/51X00X3ZKSL._SL500_AA240_-150x150.jpg" alt="51X00X3ZKSL._SL500_AA240_" title="51X00X3ZKSL._SL500_AA240_" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-26778" />Nokia describes <a href="http://finance.yahoo.com/news/Changes-in-Roles-of-Nokia-prnews-2414292178.html?x=0&amp;.v=101">the management overhaul</a> it’s undertaking as  a common <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052748704322004574476694045425858.html">&#8220;job rotation,&#8221;</a> but coming as it does after its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">lousy third-quarter financial performance and a worrisome decline in smart-phone market share</a>, it seems perhaps just a little bit more. </p>
<p>This morning the Finnish mobile phone giant tapped Rick Simonson, currently its chief financial officer, as head of its handset division. And the company named Timo Ihamuotila, currently global head of sales, CFO.   </p>
<p>While Simonson’s move from CFO to head of Nokia’s mobile phone business might seem a bit odd, analysts say it could be just what the company needs. &#8220;Simonson has been in the business for years,&#8221; <a href="http://www.forbes.com/2009/10/16/nokia-new-management-markets-equities-phones.html">Swedbank Securities analyst Jan Ihrfelt told Forbes</a>. &#8220;He knows the company quite well, has the financial skills and the skills of a good communicator to make people in the company excited about new goals.&#8221;</p>
<p>And that’s clearly something Nokia (NOK) needs. For while the company is holding its ground in the broader mobile phone business, it’s losing it in smart phones, the fastest-growing segment of the market. As I noted yesterday, Nokia’s share of the smart-phone market slipped to 35 percent from 41 percent in its latest quarter, a grim reminder of just how poorly the company’s flagship smart phones are faring in their battle with iPhone maker Apple (AAPL) and BlackBerry manufacturer Research In Motion (RIMM). </p>
<p>Said  Ihrfelt: &#8220;Nokia hasn&#8217;t been as quick as others in catching up with trends in the market and in bringing phones to consumers. One would expect a player the size of Nokia to have a product that competes with the iPhone, but that hasn&#8217;t been the case.&#8221;</p>
<p>Not yet, anyway. But that may soon change. A few weeks back,<a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601085&amp;sid=am0CqlyI5_uQ"> Nokia hired John Martin, former vice president of iPhone and Mac Internet Services at Apple</a> to oversee development of new devices based on its Maemo platform.</p>

This morning, Nokia posted an unexpected 559 million euro ($836 million) loss for the period, its first in a decade. </p>
<p>Dragging the company down: A 908 million euro goodwill write-off in the Nokia Siemens Networks venture it co-owns with Siemens (SI). Revenue was 9.8 billion euros, or about $14.6 billion, which was down about 20 percent compared to last year. Worse, smart-phone market share declined to 35 percent from 41 percent in the previous quarter.</p>
<p>Six points gone in three months? That’s a brutal loss and one that demonstrates just how much pressure the company is seeing from Apple (AAPL) and Research in Motion (RIMM), among others. </p>
<p>&#8220;Nokia is launching plenty of new high-end smartphone models, such as the N900 and N97 mini,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/businessNews/idUSTRE59C5B120091015?sp=true">Strategy Analytics analyst Neil Mawston told Reuters</a>. &#8220;But as yet there is no iPhone killer to drive a major revival in its smartphone volumes. Nokia is still struggling in the U.S. smartphone market, and with competition intensifying in China as well, Nokia&#8217;s battles can only get tougher in 2010.&#8221;</p>
<p>Still, Nokia (NOK) did have some good news to report. It expects mobile device volumes to increase in the fourth quarter of 2009 and it sees the global handset market shrinking less this year than analysts had feared&#8211;seven percent instead of 10 percent. </p>
<p>&#8220;It is encouraging to see some signs of recovery in our markets,&#8221; Kallasvuo said during a conference call. &#8220;But let&#8217;s be clear, uncertainty in end-consumer demand remains.&#8221;</p>

This morning, the EC <a href="http://europa.eu/rapid/pressReleasesAction.do?reference=MEMO/09/439&amp;format=HTML&amp;aged=0&amp;language=EN&amp;guiLanguage=en">announced</a> a <a href="http://ec.europa.eu/competition/antitrust/cases/decisions/39530/market_test_notice.pdf"> market test of the browser ballot feature</a> Microsoft plans to include in Windows 7. If it’s successful, the feature will become standard in European versions of Windows and resolve the ongoing antitrust case in which the EC accused the American firm of abusing its Windows monopoly.</p>
<p>&#8220;I’m absolutely of the opinion that this is a trustful deal that we’re making. I trust Microsoft,&#8221; Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said during a press conference this morning. &#8220;There can’t be a misunderstanding. Here is the final result of a long discussion over a long period.&#8221;</p>
<p>Microsoft (MSFT) was equally upbeat on the EC’s decision. &#8220;We welcome today’s announcement by the European Commission to move forward with formal market testing of Microsoft’s proposal relating to web browser choice in Europe,&#8221; General Counsel Brad Smith said in a statement. &#8220;We also welcome the opportunity to take the next step in the process regarding our proposal to promote interoperability with a broad range of our products.&#8221;</p>
<p>There were, however, a few that were not so welcoming of the move. Top among them, ECIS, an industry group whose members include Oracle (ORCL), Sun (JAVA), IBM (IBM) and Nokia (NOK). &#8220;ECIS notes that the settlement does not appear to deal with the inadequacies of Microsoft&#8217;s standards compliance, unfair pricing practices or other concerns related to patent abuse or standards manipulation,&#8221; the group said in a statement.</p>

In fact, according to <a href="http://cts.businesswire.com/ct/CT?id=smartlink&amp;url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.cfigroup.com&amp;esheet=6061269&amp;lan=en_US&amp;anchor=www.cfigroup.com&amp;index=1">the CFI Group</a>, WinMo has such poor brand recognition that it was forced to group it in the &#8220;Other&#8221; category in its <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&#038;newsId=20090929006594&#038;newsLang=en">Smartphone Satisfaction Survey</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;Throughout this report we have focused on the main &#8216;branded&#8217; smartphones like iPhone, Android, Pre, BlackBerry, and Treo,&#8221; the market researcher explained. &#8220;And yet there are many more smartphones in use today, manufactured by the likes of LG, Samsung, Motorola, and Nokia, running either the Windows Mobile or Symbian operating system. What’s going on with these smartphones? For one thing, many users can’t identify their operating system. While Android users know they have a phone on the Android platform, most Windows Mobile or Symbian users have no idea what operating system is running their phone.&#8221;</p>
<p>That’s bad news for Microsoft (MSFT) and Nokia (NOK) because not only do these &#8220;other&#8221; smart phones tend to perform the most poorly in customer satisfaction, most of their owners would like to abandon them for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, Research in Motion&#8217;s (RIMM) BlackBerry or the Palm (PALM) Pre. </p>
<p>“The ‘generic’ smartphone is unloved, unappreciated, and unlikely to encourage any devotion among its users,” CFI concludes. “Its main role appears to be as a stepping stone to a ‘branded’ smartphone&#8230;.Our data indicates there is little future for the ‘generic’ smartphone. Or, to be exact, the first generation of ‘generic’ smartphones. The iPhone has clearly raised the bar, but given the performance of the initial versions of the Pre and Android, the gap is narrowing. It’s clear from our data that the Android and Pre are worthy competitors to the iPhone, and more recent versions of the BlackBerry pose a bigger threat.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/09/shut-up-fool.jpg" alt="shut-up-fool" title="shut-up-fool" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-full wp-image-25508" />Analysts who follow Palm (PALM) are already rolling their eyes over <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090925/palm-pre-verizon/">TheStreet.com&#8217;s claim that Verizon (VZ) has balked at adding the company’s new Pre handset to its lineup</a>. In a research note this morning, Deutsche Bank&#8217;s Jonathan Goldberg dismissed it as “off base.”</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe the press reports late Thursday afternoon that Verizon would not launch the Palm Pre are incorrect,&#8221; Goldberg wrote. &#8220;Our checks continue to point to healthy carrier demand for the Pre early in calendar 2010. We believe Palm has placed orders with the supply chain for another version of the Pre with features highly consistent with a Verizon launch.&#8221;</p>
<p>Over at Morgan Keegan &#038; Co, Tavis McCourt was equally dubious. &#8220;Palm reiterated its FY2010 guidance, which we believe REQUIRES a launch at Verizon (you just can’t get there with just Sprint and AT&#038;T),&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Verizon has carried just about every Palm product in its history, and the Pre is clearly the best. We do not have insight as to the marketing support Palm will get from Verizon, but we see little risk in not getting a placement at this carrier. The timing of the rumor post-deal makes it equally as dubious as the timing of the &#8216;Nokia will buy Palm&#8217; rumor during the roadshow.&#8221;</p>
<p>McCourt, it’s worth noting, believes the Pre will come to Verizon Wireless early next year. &#8220;Feb. holds the potential to be a strong Pre quarter as shipments to Sprint likely stabilize and distribution expands to Verizon Wireless (our assumption),&#8221; he explains. &#8220;Palm’s success at Sprint has typically been a good barometer for shipment trends at VZW and, with a postpaid sub base that&#8217;s roughly 3x as large as Sprint&#8217;s CDMA business, the market opportunity at VZW is much larger. However, Pre trends at Sprint were aided by the device&#8217;s near term exclusivity and a large base of existing Palm users upgrading their devices, both factors that VZW lacks.&#8221;</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong>  Jim Gerace, executive director of media relations at Verizon, <a href="http://www.ecommercetimes.com/story/Verizon-Denies-Palm-Snub-Will-Add-Pre-in-January-68220.html?wlc=1253914629">tells E-Commerce Times</a> that the company will offer the smartphone in January as planned.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATED:</strong> Sources are <a href="http://www.boygeniusreport.com/2009/09/25/confirmed-verizon-wireless-will-sell-the-palm-pre/">telling Boy Genius</a> that TheStreet.com&#8217;s report is bogus as well.</p>

<p>&#8220;The commission has endorsed the local sale of the iPhone and the launch of its service within the limits of the law,&#8221; said  Lee Tae-hee, a spokesman of the Korea Communications Commission. &#8220;If Apple includes location based-related details as a form of an agreement to its strategic partners such as KT, Apple&#8217;s iPhone can give location-related services here.&#8221; </p>
<p>Great news for Apple (AAPL). The South Korean market is a robust one, and analysts say that with the right carrier partner, Cupertino could be looking at sales over the first year ranging from 500,000 to two million. That said, they note that competing with the likes of Samsung and LG on their home turf won’t be easy. Between them, they control about 70 percent of the South Korean handset market. </p>
<p>&#8220;There seem to be a lot of people waiting for iPhones to go on sale here but it will not be easy for Apple to crack the Korean market as Samsung and LG already dominate the market with competitive phones,&#8221; said Jae Lee, analyst at Daiwa Securities in Seoul. &#8220;It will be difficult for Apple to steal market share significantly from the Korean makers in the short term but the iPhone could still be a threat to Samsung and LG in the long term.&#8221;</p>
<p>When the iPhone finally does arrive at market in South Korea, it will likely be with KT (formerly known as Korea Telecom) as a carrier partner. <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=6853">As Dan Butterfield over at iPhonAsia notes</a>, KT CFO Yeon-hak Kim suggested as much this past summer. &#8220;Apple iPhone will be in our smartphone line-up,&#8221; he said in August. “iPhone will help to expand the smartphone market and will contribute to increasing the ARPU (average revenue per user).&#8221; </p>
<p>KT officials are telling the Korea Times that they’re looking at a November launch date. &#8220;KT has been in talks with Apple to introduce iPhones,&#8221; <a href="http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2009/09/123_52348.html">said a KT official</a>. &#8220;Sometime in November, the latest iPhone model dubbed as &#8216;iPhone 3GS&#8217; and its previous model will be commercialized. KT and Apple will decide on the coverage of location-based services.&#8221;</p>
