Nokia’s workforce is deteriorating nearly as fast as its share of the mobile phone market. This morning, the company–which sacked 1,700 employees in March and another 450 in April–said it will cut 330 more jobs in its research and development group.
Palm shares are trading higher today, bolstered by anticipation of the Nov. 15 launch of the Pixi, the company’s second webOS handset, and by some silly rumors about a potential takeover by Nokia. Does the company really need another software platform to add to Symbian, Maemo and Qt? C’mon.
After nearly three years of rumor and speculation, Dell is finally entering the smartphone market–in China and Brazil. Later this month, China Mobile and Brazil’s Claro will begin selling the company’s Mini 3, a handset designed around Google’s Android mobile OS.
Lest there be any doubt that Apple’s iPhone is redefining the smartphone market, consider this: In under two and a half years, the device has managed to claim nearly a fifth of the worldwide market for smartphones.
According to new data released this week by Gartner, Apple shipped some 7.04 million iPhones in the third quarter–up from just 4.72 million phones in the same period a year ago–for a 17.1 percent share of the market.
Looks like Bing’s September market share decline was more an anomaly than anything else. According to the latest figures from Hitwise, Bing’s share of the search market increased seven percent in October, evidently at the expense of both Google and Yahoo.
The Pixi, the Palm Pre’s diminutive smart-phone sibling, arrives at market a few days from now (Nov. 15), and despite some potential pricing confusion with the Pre, analysts expect it to be another catalyst for the company’s comeback. In a note to clients today, Bank of America/Merrill Lynch analyst Vivek Arya said Palm is well-poised for growth in 2010.
The Droid invasion appears to be going according to plan. Motorola’s new Android-based handset arrived at Verizon Wireless stores last Friday and analysts say it’s selling quite well. Indeed, Broadpoint AmTech analyst Mark McKechnie estimates Verizon sold about 100,000 Droids in its first weekend.
Given the havoc the econalypse has played with other industries, the smart-phone market is in extraordinarily good shape. Shipments of the devices rose 4.2 percent to 43.3 million globally compared with 41.5 million shipped in third quarter of 2008.
Looks like it’s going to be a very busy fall for Intel legal. This morning, New York Attorney General Andrew Cuomo filed a federal antitrust lawsuit against the company, alleging that it violated state and federal laws with a “systematic campaign” of illegal conduct.
What do you know: China Unicom just coughed up some first weekend sales numbers for the iPhone and…well, they’re not much to look at, despite what I said earlier. The carrier sold just 5,000.
Cisco’s fall acquisition binge continues unabated. Late Monday, the company announced plans to buy the set-top box business of China’s DVN Holdings for up to $44.5 million. This after spending $3 billion on videoconferencing system maker Tandberg, wireless infrastructure outfit Starent Networks and software-as-a-service security vendor ScanSafe–all in quick succession.
If Barry Diller is looking for somewhere to unload IAC’s Ask.com search engine, he’d be wise to consider Microsoft–if he doesn’t have that in mind already. Analysts reflecting on Diller’s recent remarks about Ask’s “speculative future” say Microsoft is the most likely buyer if IAC is truly serious about dumping the little search engine that couldn’t.
Motorola’s ambitious turnaround strategy is beginning to pay off. Posting earnings this morning, the company said it managed a surprise profit in the third quarter, despite a decline in revenue. For the period, the troubled handset maker reported a profit of $12 million, or a penny a share, compared with a year-earlier loss of $397 million, or 18 cents a share. Sales fell 28 percent to $5.45 billion from $7.48 billion. Not the prettiest of quarters, but that penny-a-share profit beat the consensus estimates of analysts, who had expected the company to simply break even.
Google is moving into your market. For tech companies, few words are more frightening, and yesterday we saw why. The mere announcement of Google Maps Navigation sent shares of established GPS device makers like Garmin and TomTom into an ugly downward spiral.
