			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/misift1.jpg" alt="misift" title="misift" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28841" />As clever as it is, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091109/verizon-banishes-iphone-to-island-of-misfit-toys/">Verizon’s reimagining of a Rankin/Bass animated Christmas television special as a criticism of AT&#038;T&#8217;s wireless network coverage</a> did not go over well with Ma Bell. On Wednesday, the carrier amended its complaint against Verizon, asking a federal court in Atlanta to force its rival to immediately pull the ad and two other holiday-themed spots that debuted with it. </p>
<p>Once again, AT&#038;T (T) argues that  coverage maps featured in Verizon’s (VZ) ad are misleading and falsely suggest that AT&#038;T offers no coverage in areas where it actually does service.  </p>
<p>&#8220;Contrary to the image presented in the Verizon ads, our wireless network is pervasive,&#8221; said an AT&#038;T spokesman. &#8220;It covers over 300 million people, or 97 percent of the U.S. population.  Our fastest, or 3G, network covers approximately 233 million people, or 75 percent of the U.S. population&#8230;.[Verizon's] use of white space is misleading.&#8221;</p>
<p>While AT&#038;T is <a href="http://www.att.com/gen/press-room?pid=14002">deadly serious about this accusation</a>, the fact that it must make it by referencing creatures like the Abominable Snow Monster and a pink spotted elephant makes it, well, hysterical. </p>
<p>&#8220;The &#8216;Island of Misfit Toys&#8217; television advertisement is a parody of the &#8216;Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer&#8217; television special that depicts an island to which Rudolph travels after escaping an attack from the Abominable Snow Monster,&#8221; AT&#038;T argues in its complaint. &#8220;The advertisement begins with outdated, discarded toys expressing surprise at the arrival of an Apple iPhone. The red Charlie-in-the-Box says &#8216;Hey! Check out the new guy!&#8217; The spotted elephant, in a surprised manner, asks the iPhone &#8216;What are you doing here? You can download apps and browse the web!&#8217; and a Dolly for Sue asserts that &#8216;Yeah. People will love you [the iPhone].&#8217;&#8221; </p>
<p>The complaint continues: &#8220;In response, a blue AT&#038;T coverage map depicting large swaths of &#8216;white&#8217; or &#8216;blank&#8217; space across the United States appears above the iPhone. All the toys exclaim &#8216;Oh . . .&#8217; in dismay, while the iPhone wilts and its screen turns dark. The toy airplane then assures the iPhone that &#8216;you’re going to fit right in here!&#8217;&#8221; </p>
<p>Finally, as AT&#038;T describes it, &#8220;AT&#038;T’s and Verizon’s coverage maps then appear and the announcer states, &#8216;with five times more 3G coverage than AT&#038;T, Verizon Wireless is your destination for great gifts.&#8217; The image of the sad and wilting iPhone on an island of misfit toys falsely communicates that the iPhone is a broken device because it cannot browse the web or download applications when outside of AT&#038;T’s depicted coverage area. Further, the maps in the advertisement deceive consumers into believing that AT&#038;T’s customers have no coverage whatsoever when they are outside of AT&#038;T’s depicted coverage area and thus cannot use their wireless devices in many parts of the United States.&#8221;</p>
<p>Verizon&#8217;s attorneys are probably doubled over with laughter at this very moment.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<blockquote><p>&#8220;Verizon is displaying maps of the United States that purport to show each carrier’s &#8216;3G&#8217; coverage. The maps use color to depict the areas of the country in which each carrier has &#8216;3G&#8217; coverage and blank or white space in the areas of the country where &#8216;3G&#8217; coverage is not available. Consumers are interpreting the white or blank space on the maps to mean that AT&#038;T customers who are not in an AT&#038;T &#8216;3G&#8217; coverage area have no wireless coverage whatsoever, and therefore have no ability to use their wireless devices for any purposes in vast areas of the country. This interpretation is not surprising as Verizon, in its own coverage maps, uses white space to inform customers that no coverage of any kind exists. Contrary to the misleading message conveyed by Verizon’s advertisements, AT&#038;T customers can fully use their wireless devices outside of a &#8216;3G&#8217; coverage area and undisputedly have coverage in areas depicted by the white or blank spaces on the maps used in Verizon’s advertisements.&#8221;</p>

<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/map-250x250.jpg" alt="map" title="map" width="250" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-28312" />If AT&#038;T’s lawsuit over Verizon’s allegedly misleading &#8220;there’s a map for that&#8221; wasn’t a public relations mistake to begin with, it will be by the time Verizon gets through with it. Responding to the suit today, Verizon (VZ) rep Jeffrey Nelson used it to stoke public perception that AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T) network is inferior to Verizon&#8217;s. </p>
<p>&#8220;This is a junk lawsuit. It has no merit,&#8221; <a href="http://www.adweek.com/aw/content_display/news/digital/e3id386c4a26251b0b5727e6f657ad8a1d1">Nelson told Adweek</a>. &#8220;It&#8217;s surprising that rather than defend the &#8216;blue&#8217; hot spots on their 3G map, our competitor instead focuses on their white spaces. The maps clearly note that the comparisons are of 3G service, and further note that voice and data services are available in other places.&#8221;</p>
<p>Way to draw attention away from Verizon&#8217;s claim of a superior network coverage, AT&#038;T.</p>

This morning the company announced a wireless touchscreen printer that will allow users to print documents from the Web without ever using a PC or browser. </p>
<p>The device, dubbed HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web&#8211;a grand mountain range of a name if there ever was one&#8211;features integrated touch access and a selection of print apps through which users can find news, maps, coupons, movie tickets and recipes from the likes of USA Today, Google (GOOG), Fandango and Coupons Inc. Price: $399. </p>
<p>“Twenty-five years ago we invented consumer printing and today we are taking advantage of the content explosion and reinventing the category by launching an entirely new printing platform&#8211;powered by touch and empowered by the Web,” said Vyomesh Joshi, executive vice president, HP Imaging and Printing Group. “By giving people access to the content they want at the touch of a finger, the ability to customize their printing experience and create their own apps, and enabling easy &#8216;one touch&#8217; wireless set up, we are driving a significant shift in how people will be printing in the future.” </p>
<p>Not quite sure how significant a shift this represents. Is printing from the typical PC really so tiring and troublesome that it needs to be eliminated? In any case, here&#8217;s the HP (HPQ) press release:</p>

<p>SAN FRANCISCO, June 22, 2009 – HP today unveiled the world’s first web-connected home printer: The HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web.</p>
<p>HP is bringing the power of the web directly to the printer and combining it with HP’s TouchSmart technology to give people quick, easy, touchscreen access to popular digital content.</p>
<p>Designed for the digital generation and connected households, the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web features an entirely new web-based printing platform with HP applications (apps). Similar to other Internet-connected devices, these apps, which are viewable on an extra-large, intuitive-to-use TouchSmart panel, allow people to connect instantly with fun, informative and personal content.</p>
<p>In addition to receiving apps preloaded on the printer, people can download new ones as they become available at the HP Apps Studio to suit their interests and needs. With the sweep of a finger, users will be able to browse and view popular web destinations and simply touch the app of their choice to launch a web page where they can customize and print content on demand in an easy-to-read format.</p>
<p>As pioneers of this new content-on-demand delivery platform, the world’s first HP app partners will be USA TODAY, Google, Fandango, Coupons.com, DreamWorks Animation, Nickelodeon, Web Sudoku and Weathernews Inc. Through these apps, people will have free access to customized daily news, maps, coupons, coloring pages, movie tickets, recipes, personal calendars and more – all at the touch of a finger.</p>
<p>The new printers also will connect directly to a user’s Snapfish account to view, print and upload photos. People additionally can access projects from the HP Creative Studio. </p>

<p>Free HP apps available at launch<br />
Industry leaders from the worlds of news, entertainment and information are the first to offer free apps debuting on the HP Photosmart Premium with TouchSmart Web. Consumers will be able to print daily, weekly or monthly news from USA TODAY, updated in real time and customized according to their interests, such as sports, news and politics.  </p>
<p>“Today marks another change in the way our readers can access news and information as we bring print-on-demand to consumers’ homes,” said Jeff Webber, publisher, USATODAY.com. “People can print the latest stories from USA TODAY at the touch of a finger to better fit their busy, on-the-go lives.”</p>
<p>From Google Maps, consumers will be able to enter their destination and print a map; from Google Calendar, they will be able to print their weekly schedule to place on their refrigerator or bulletin board.</p>
<p>With Coupons.com, users can save money by printing coupons for groceries, restaurants, entertainment and more. People also can browse and print recipes for quick, easy meal planning.</p>
<p>Consumers will be able to search movies in their local area from any one of Fandango’s 16,000 theater screens across the country. They can then buy tickets in advance and print their tickets at home or the office, helping ensure an easy and convenient movie-going experience.</p>
<p>To empower busy families, the printer provides one-touch access to fun coloring pages and templates from DreamWorks Animation and Nickelodeon. Through the DreamWorks Animation app users also will be able to view movie trailers to upcoming releases without having to log on to a computer. And, as expected, it boasts enhancements to the device&#8217;s Maps application, improvements to its telephone functionality, <a href="http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3318">better security</a> and support for over-the-air podcast updates, as well as a few other interesting additions. Among them, an app-scoring feature that allows users to rate applications purchased from the the App Store before deleting them, slideshows of App Store  application screenshots, &#8220;return to home screen&#8221; functionality and an off-switch for autocorrection.</p>
<p>Notably absent from this latest firmware update: landscape SMS, MMS support and, of course, cut-and-paste&#8211;whose continued absence Apple (AAPL) apparently views as a feature.</p>

<p>Which is <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB119747431495223769.html?mod=googlenews_wsj">what Microsoft did today</a> when <a href="http://business.timesonline.co.uk/tol/business/industry_sectors/media/article3040853.ece">it purchased Multimap for a reported $50 million.</a> &#8220;The addition of Multimap enhances Microsoft&#8217;s position as a leading provider of mapping and location platform services,&#8221; Sharon Baylay, general manager of Microsoft&#8217;s Online Services Group, said in a statement. &#8220;This acquisition will play a significant role in the future growth of our search business and presents a huge opportunity to expand our platform business beyond the U.K. and globally.&#8221;</p>
<p><em>Leading provider of mapping and location platform services?</em> That&#8217;s a bit of a stretch. According to Nielsen Online, Microsoft&#8217;s Windows Live Maps service had 7.1 million unique users worldwide during October. By comparison, Google Maps had 71.5 million unique users, its Earth service 22.7 million. Clearly, Microsoft is in a losing battle against Google in the mapping space, though this acquisition will give it a powerful weapon with which to fight.</p>

Dubbed My Maps, it allows amateur cartographers to create and annotate maps of their own within the Google system.  &#8220;Who better to create maps than local experts?&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/internetNews/idUKN0436837620070405">Jessica Lee, product manager for Google Maps, told Reuters</a>. &#8220;MyMaps makes map-making universally accessible to anyone.&#8221; Of course, Google has other reasons for offering such a service. By allowing regular users to quickly and easily create maps, Google will create more user-generated content for its mapping search engine, making it increasingly more useful&#8211;and ubiquitous.</p>
