Intel, AMD Announce Dual Core Litigation Settlement

AMD-INTEL-DUALCORE-SUPPORTWow. Intel and AMD’s seemingly endless legal battles have finally ended. The two companies said early Thursday that they have reached a comprehensive agreement that resolves their many antitrust and patent disputes. Under its terms, Intel will pay AMD $1.25 billion and agree to “abide by a set of business practice provisions” presumably crafted to temper its alleged anticompetitive practices.

Morgan Stanley to EU: Whatever Larry Wants, Larry Gets, and Sun Is No Exception

ellison_sundog-150x1501For Oracle, whose acquisition of Peoplesoft and Siebel Systems cleared in Europe without conditions, news that the European Commission issued formal objections to its purchase of Sun was likely particularly galling. According to Oracle CEO Larry Ellison, Sun is already losing $100 million a month as it waits for regulatory approval, and judging from the price of the company’s stock today, it may be losing even more.

New iMacs May Include “Bag of Hurt” Option

augurs-150x150Asked in October 2008 why Apple wasn’t yet offering Blu-ray DVD drives as an option on machines, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the licensing issues were too complex to make doing so worthwhile. “Blu-ray is a bag of hurt,” he quipped. Well, no longer. Because Apple is planning to refresh its iMac desktop computer in the next few weeks, and when it does, it may well offer a Blue-ray drive option.

One in Five Notebooks Is a Netbook

toylaptop-150x150Reporting second-quarter results earlier this year, Microsoft cited “a continued shift to lower-priced netbooks” as one factor degrading its financial performance. The netbook’s ascension meant, and continues to mean, that Windows client-licensing revenue is down. So the company will surely be aghast to learn that netbook sales are growing twice as quickly as those of full-sized laptops.

Android on Steroids

Strategy Analytics estimates shipments of handsets running the OS will grow 900 percent this year as more vendors adopt it. At that rate, it will far outpace the growth of Apple’s iPhone, whose shipments the company expects to increase 79 percent in 2009.
