Nokia is taking the ax to its research and development group. Again. This morning the company said it would cut around 220 R&D jobs in Japan. This, just four days after announcing plans to eliminate 330 jobs in Finland and Denmark.

Nokia is taking the ax to its research and development group. Again. This morning the company said it would cut around 220 R&D jobs in Japan. This, just four days after announcing plans to eliminate 330 jobs in Finland and Denmark.

The stated reason for the reductions: An effort to better align the company’s operations with its focused portfolio of future products. Seems Nokia (NOK), which typically spews out 50 or so new phones a year, many of them unremarkable, plans to concentrate on a smaller number of more “iconic” devices going forward.

In other words, Nokia is going to work a little harder to catch up with Apple (AAPL), which has really shown up the company these past few years. As Bengt Nordstrom, chief executive of telecom consultant Northstream, told Reuters earlier this year: “As much as iPhone and App Store is a success for Apple, it’s a humiliating defeat for the rest of the mobile industry. Twenty years of efforts from operators and vendors to create mobile applications that customers like is overtaken in a heartbeat by someone that never done it before.”

Here’s a data point to consider amid the tech sector’s continuing job cuts. According to a new study by Cyber-Ark, many employees leaving their jobs aren’t above adding a little something to their separation packages: Confidential corporate data.

Here’s a data point to consider amid the tech sector’s continuing job cuts. According to a new study by Cyber-Ark, many employees leaving their jobs aren’t above adding a little something to their separation packages: Confidential corporate data.

Of the 600 financial sector workers surveyed on Wall Street and London’s Canary Wharf who lost or left a job last year, 41 percent admitted to taking confidential company data with them. Exactly half, 50 percent, said they would steal company information if they were fired tomorrow, and 39 percent said they would download it if they felt their job was at risk.

Nearly a third, 28 percent, would use the information to negotiate their next position. The most commonly stolen data: Customer contact lists that could be leveraged at a new job.

Cyber-Ark’s study isn’t the first to uncover such employee sentiments. A similar effort by the Ponemon Institute earlier this year found that close to 60 percent of people who left or lost their jobs in 2008 took company data with them. “I’m not sure that malicious intent and future employment are mutually exclusive,” Larry Ponemon, chairman of the Ponemon Institute, told eWeek at the time.

“Clearly the responses show that obtaining future employment was a significant motivating factor,” Ponemon added, “but when we see a high percentage of individuals who took information knowing full well they were acting in violation of company policy, that hints strongly at the presence of malice.”

Nokia’s workforce is deteriorating nearly as fast as its share of the mobile phone market. This morning, the company–which sacked 1,700 employees in March and another 450 in April–said it will cut 330 more jobs in its research and development group. But not to worry, says Nokia, that’s just two percent of the company’s 17,000-strong R&D staff.

Another sad turn of events for Nokia (NOK), whose dominance of the smartphone market is being steadily eroded by competition from the likes of Apple (AAPL) and Research In Motion (RIMM). In its latest quarter, the company’s smartphone market share declined to 35 percent from 41 percent. This slide is likely to continue unless Nokia is able to inspire a major revival in its smartphone volumes with a worthy iPhone rival.

And the company did just that this morning, announcing plans to shutter its Research Triangle Park facility in North Carolina, as well as offices in Miami, India and Sweden.

The closures, which will see Sony Ericsson’s North American headquarters moved to Atlanta, will result in the loss of some 2,000 jobs. This a little more than a year after the joint venture’s last big round of layoffs, part of a companywide cost-cutting plan that also left about 2,000 people unemployed.

In an 8-K filing made today with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the company said it will cut nine percent of its workforce, approximately 680 jobs, to better cope with flaccid demand for its software.

Cuts at Adobe (ADBE) will occur worldwide and are intended to bring costs in line with its 2010 budget and “the realities of the business environment,” the company said in a statement. They follow a similar round of cuts made in 2008 that claimed the livelihoods of about 600 people.

How quickly Sprint has gone from cutting jobs to cutting checks. Not 24 hours after announcing plans to sack between 2,000 and 25,000 employees, the company said it has agreed to invest another $1.18 billion in WiMax provider Clearwire. That’s a big check to be writing, but then, Sprint (S) is Clearwire’s majority shareholder and the carrier’s plans for differentiated 4G services rely heavily on the outfit’s success.

With Clearwire struggling to build out a next-generation network that will go up against Verizon Wireless (VZ) and AT&T (T) for future mobile customers, Sprint has little choice but to throw more money at it. But it’s not alone in doing so. Fellow partners Comcast (CMSCA), Time Warner Cable (TWC), Intel (INTC), Eagle River Holdings and Bright House Networks are also making additional investments, though together they total only $500 million.

Oddly absent from this list is Google (GOOG), which participated in a May 2008 investment round that pumped $12 billion into Clearwire but has evidently decided to sit this one out. Said Google spokesman Andrew Pederson: “We have already made a significant financial investment, and at this point we think the best way we can continue to add value is through continued product and strategic cooperation.”

One wonders if the shared mission of which the two companies boasted when the deal was announced has somehow changed in the ensuing year.

The mobile network equipment maker said today that it plans to reduce its 64,000-strong workforce by up to nine percent in a bid to “improve financial performance and return to growth”–something the joint venture has had a hard time doing since it launched in February 2007. Sadly, as many as 5,700 employees may lose their jobs as a result. This, after the 15 percent workforce reduction the company underwent last year.

“Despite having fully achieved the original merger integration savings objectives of Nokia Siemens Networks, changes in the global economy and competitive environment make further cost reductions necessary,” the company said.

“I understand the European Union has a job to do, but the longer this takes, the more money Sun is going to lose and that’s not good. We want to get it done to save as many jobs as we can.”

– Oracle CEO Larry Ellison

The end of Sun Microsystems as an independent company after 27 years is to be prefaced with a bloodletting. And a big one too. The company is sacking some 3,000 employees as it awaits the closing of Oracle’s (ORCL) planned $7.4 billion takeover.

That’s about 10 percent of its workforce.

The cuts, which were disclosed in a regulatory filing today, are to occur in all markets in which Sun (JAVA) has a presence and will be completed over the next 12 months. Sun expects to incur cash severance and other charges of $75 million to $125 million over the next several quarters as a result.

Seems Oracle CEO Larry Ellison wasn’t kidding when he said further delays in approving his company’s deal to buy Sun would cost more people their jobs.

Ugly news for Sun, which has already made sweeping job cuts over the past year, releasing some 6,000 employees into the wild since last November.

Oracle and Sun have not yet responded to requests for comment.

UPDATE: Oracle has declined to comment on the layoffs at Sun.

Oracle has a message for CIOs and Sun customers concerned about its plans for Sun’s hardware, Solaris and SPARC businesses: Relax. In a full-page ad published in The Wall Street Journal today, the database giant made a very public commitment to all of them and told customers there’s no reason to consider jumping ship for IBM. “We’re in it to win it,” Oracle CEO Larry Ellison boasts in the ad. “IBM, we’re looking forward to competing with you in the hardware business.”

Welcome news for Sun (JAVA) engineers worried they might lose their jobs as a result of Oracle’s (ORCL) surprise acquisition of the company. Bad news for rivals like Dell (DELL), HP (HPQ), and, of course, IBM (IBM). Clearly, Oracle plans to make their lives a lot more difficult.

More bad news from Sony. This morning the electronics giant posted its second straight quarterly loss and reiterated its forecast for another year of red ink.

Sony’s net loss in the quarter was 37.1 billion yen ($390 million), a brutal change from the 35 billion yen profit in the year-ago period. Still, it was smaller than the 109.6 billion yen loss analysts polled by Thomson Reuters had been expecting. That said, all three of Sony’s core electronics divisions registered losses for the quarter.

Not a good sign. Because while the company’s smaller-than-expected loss proves its cost-cutting measures have been effective, it also shows that Sony (SNE) must do more than just slash jobs and suppliers if it ever hopes to regain its position in the market. For while cost-cutting might improve Sony’s bottom line, it’s not going to make the company competitive against Samsung, Nintendo and Apple (AAPL), who’ve usurped its position in TVs, gaming consoles and media players, respectively. What Sony needs most is not more cost-cutting; it’s a new gotta-have-it product.

Seriously. It’s been, what, 30 years since the debut of the Walkman?

This recession is a long way from over if Verizon’s latest earnings are anything to judge by. Reporting second-quarter earnings that were a penny better than the 62 cents per share Wall Street had been expecting, the company said it suffered a nasty 21 percent drop in profit thanks to the econalypse, which is pinching enterprise customers pretty hard these days.

“The current environment is challenging,” CFO John Killian told analysts during an earnings call Monday, noting that the layoffs we’ve read so much about the past year have badly hurt demand for wired and wireless connections, PC laptop cards and other business services. In fact, so challenging is the environment that Verizon (VZ), which has already eliminated 8,000 jobs in the past year, plans to cut another 8,000 in the second half of this year. “Candidly, we are looking at all other areas of expense,” Killian said.

And what of Verizon’s disputed claims that it plans to add Palm’s (PALM) Pre to its lineup in the near future? The company insists they’re true. During this morning’s conference call, company execs confirmed they plan to carry the Pre “early next year.”
