Apple has sold some 225 million iPods to date, making it one of the most popular electronic devices ever. And it’s sure to sell even more after the updates the company announced at this morning’s event in San Francisco. Among them: Larger, cheaper iPod touches and nanos with cameras and FM radios.

itunes9Speaking at Apple’s music event, CEO Steve Jobs, in his first public appearance since his medical leave of absence, introduces iTunes 9. After noting that iTunes is the largest music store in the world, boasting some 100 million accounts, Jobs rattles off some of the software’s new features. Among them: Genius Mixes and improved synching. The latter enables more specific synching and supports a new way of managing applications for the iPhone and iPod touch with a nice drag-and-drop feature. Very easy to organize and reorganize applications. The crowd really likes this one.

Weekend Update: 9.5.2009–One for the Kids

The week that took us from August to September was one for the books over at BoomTown, especially if you’re 12.

Kara spent Monday morning at Activision Blizzard, where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated DJ Hero console.

Streaming Video Better on Pre Than on iPhone?

nflThough it got off to a slow start, Palm’s App Catalog is slowly evolving into the ecosystem for which the company had hoped. It recently surpassed four million downloads and is poised for a bit of a growth spurt now that more applications have begun to appear on its virtual shelves. Indeed, in the last week, the number of applications available for the Pre increased by 40 percent to 58.

You’ve Got to Approve Rhapsody for iPhone, Steve. Don’t Be Pigheaded…Ow! Hey! Stop Hitting Me!

Apple Triple Play: iTunes, App TV and Apple Television

apptv_thumbThere’s not much of a business yet in Apple TV, as Apple’s leadership often notes. But there may be soon, with the market for connected TVs evolving as it has been. In a research note issued this morning, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says the time is right for Apple to release the next iteration of Apple TV and to begin work on a full-fledged Internet-connected television set.

olsonThat line of dialogue from the upcoming episode of AMC drama “Mad Men” is destined to be repeated over and over again when the program officially airs on Aug. 30, though it’s begun making the rounds already, thanks to Apple’s iTunes. Seems a glitch with the service delivered the unaired third episode, called “My Old Kentucky Home,” to “Mad Men” Season Pass subscribers just before midnight on Tuesday.

Apple Event Scheduled for Wednesday Sept. 9–Music, NO Tablet

And according to sources close to the company, the date is Wednesday, Sept. 9. Sadly, it will not feature the tablet device the company is rumored to be developing.

iPhone Undermining Microsoft in Enterprise?

In a note to clients Thursday, UBS Securities analyst Maynard Um noted that Apple’s iPhone is making some inroads in the enterprise space and that they’re coming at Microsoft’s expense.
