<p>Well, this is a first, I think: Google is promoting a consumer electronics device on its <a href="http://www.google.com/">front page</a>. Surf over to Google.com right now and you&#8217;ll find this pitch plugging Droid, Motorola&#8217;s (MOT) new Android smart phone: &#8220;The Droid is on sale now. Learn more.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/goog_droid.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/goog_droid_small.jpg" alt="goog_droid_small" title="goog_droid_small" width="350" height="190" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28419" /></a></p>
<p>The text is simple and at just 42 characters, it jibes well with Google&#8217;s (GOOG) minimalist design ethic. Click on that &#8220;learn more&#8221; link and you&#8217;re taken to a <a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/partners/verizon/search.html">mobile partners page that touts Droid&#8217;s Google-enabled search prowess</a>. Only then are you presented with a big &#8220;Get the Verizon Droid Now&#8221; button that takes you to Verizon Wireless (VZ), where you can purchase the device.</p>
<p>So is it an ad? Google will almost certainly argue that it is not. But clearly, it commercializes the page. Droid is a consumer product sold by another company and Google is branding it on its most prominent page. Wonder how much that spot is worth.</p>
<p>Furthermore, it&#8217;s interesting to see Google leveraging search&#8211;a product in which it enjoys a de facto monopoly&#8211;to promote a second product that isn’t yet dominant (Android). More so, given this remark from CEO Eric Schmidt, made just yesterday:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Hopefully, we won’t repeat the mistakes that Microsoft made 10 years ago that ultimately led to all these things that happened to them.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Google for comment and will update this post if and when I receive a reply.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong> Here&#8217;s Google&#8217;s comment on the Droid promotion via company spokesperson Gabriel Stricker:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We are currently running a homepage promotion for Droid. From time to time we include a link on the Google home page that points users to exciting and important information, whether it be relief opportunities in the wake of a tsunami or hurricane, awareness about an important cause, or information about a new product. The Droid is a hardware collaboration that we&#8217;ve been very active and involved with, so it makes sense that Google has an interest in getting the word out.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong> Turns out this is not the first Google has promoted a handset on its homepage.<a href="http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/10/g1-promoted-on-googles-homepage.html"> Last October it plugged another Android device there</a>, <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/android/hpp.html">the T-Mobile G1</a>.</p>

<strong>Making New Yahoo! Homepages Your Own</strong><br />
 <br />
We recognize that for many of you around the world, the Yahoo! homepage &#8212; whether you’re seeing it on a computer or a mobile device – is Yahoo!. And we know you all have vastly different interests and “must-see” places you navigate to online. We can make our homepage better reflect this reality and, as many of you know, we’ve been hard at work on improving both our mobile and Web homepages.<br />
 <br />
What’s new, you ask?<br />
We recently made the new Yahoo! Mobile (http://m.yahoo.com) available on the mobile Web across more than 300 devices and as an Apple iPhone app &#8212; both are available in eight countries, with more launching soon. We’ve moved out of beta and are in the process of rolling it out as our default mobile homepage.<br />
 <br />
Like the PC homepage we’re testing, Yahoo! Mobile has a more feature-rich design, letting you bring together your favorite content and services from across the Web, making it more personally relevant. For example, my experience is customized with my Yahoo! Mail, Facebook, Twitter and Yahoo! Messenger accounts, as well as my various stocks, favorite blog feeds, and weather from my favorite cities. The beauty of it is that you can customize the experience to exactly what you want and add anything to the page.<br />
 <br />
As for the Web, we recently started testing some new designs based on your feedback. We recognize that many of you like your homepage just the way it is, thank-you-very-much, so the overall look and feel of the page will be familiar. But take a closer look, and you’ll see that we’ve made some fundamental improvements and packed in features that are easy to use and easy to make your own &#8212; things you have told us you want.<br />
 <br />
The “My Favorites” area on the left side of the page includes an applications “dashboard” with the ability to preview, interact with or navigate to your favorite sites &#8212; whether they’re on Yahoo! or elsewhere on the Web. It’s all fully customizable.<br />
 <br />
Here’s some of what’s new and cool:</p>
<ul>
<li>Lots more apps: We’re testing a growing library of apps that let you get more done without leaving the page. Some of these apps include eBay and MySpace, and content sites like USA Today and NPR. We also have newly developed apps for popular Yahoo! services like Messenger, Movies and Flickr.</li>
<li>Social pulse: A new Yahoo! Updates app lets you keep up with your friends’ online activities directly on the homepage &#8212; such as a recently Buzzed article or a video uploaded to YouTube.</li>
<li>Easier email: We’ve separated your individual email accounts as distinct apps, rather than a combined inbox, so that it’s faster and easier to get to the exact mail you want. This was a request we heard repeatedly during testing.</li>

<p>Zzzzzz&#8230;</p>
<p>Not exactly a big surprise. Still, quite a piece of machinery.   Built around Intel&#8217;s (INTC) latest Nehalem Xeon Processors, the new Xserve boasts twice the performance of its predecessor, according to Apple (AAPL). It offers a 128GB SSD boot drive option and up to 3TB of internal storage and RAID 5 support. And it is, according to Apple, the best Xserve the company has ever made. It always is.<br />
 “The Xserve is the best workgroup server for our education, business and creative customers,” <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/04/07xserve.html">David Moody, Apple’s vice president of Worldwide Mac Product Marketing said in a statement</a>. “With up to twice the performance, better power efficiency and an innovative SSD drive option, this is the best Xserve we’ve ever made.”</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/03/facebooksearch.jpg" alt="facebooksearch" title="facebooksearch" width="152" height="109" class="alignright size-full wp-image-14171" />Its proposed acquisition of Twitter now little more than an unrequited Superpoke, Facebook is tweaking its own service to mimic the microblogging outfit. The social network on Wednesday unveiled a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/sitetour/homepage_tour.php">new homepage</a> that, in a nod to Twitter&#8217;s real-time message broadcasting system, now features &#8220;Streams&#8221;&#8211;Facebook&#8217;s &#8220;News Feed&#8221; revamped to update in real-time.  <a href="http://blog.facebook.com/blog.php?post=57822962130">Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg explained the concept in a post to the company blog:</a></p>
<blockquote><p>One way to think about this is as a timeline&#8211;or a stream. As people share more, the timeline gets filled in more and more with what is happening with everything you&#8217;re connected to. The pace of updates accelerates. This creates a continuous stream of information that delivers a deeper understanding for everyone participating in it. As this happens, people will no longer come to Facebook to consume a particular piece or type of content, but to consume and participate in the stream itself.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>A heavyhanded explanation for a simplistic concept, but perhaps there is a deeper meaning to be found in our collective tweet of consciousness mutterings&#8211;&#8220;John is stuck at SFO,&#8221; &#8220;Beth is all liquored up,&#8221; &#8220;Adam is reminiscing about his days on the Newton&#8221;&#8230;&#8220;Mark has a laughably grandiose vision of his social-networking service.&#8221;</p>
<p>Or perhaps the deeper meaning here is to be found in another tweak Facebook is making to its service. As part of this redesign, the company is making profiles and pages the same thing. What that means is that pages created by public figures, organizations <em>and companies</em> will now look, feel and behave just like any other profile. Now their proprietors, too, can join &#8220;the stream.&#8221; &#8220;These folks will now be able to share status updates, videos, photos or anything else they want, in the same way your friends can already,&#8221; says Zuckerberg. &#8220;You&#8217;ll be able to keep up with all of their activity in your News Feed. This means that you can find out that Oprah is reading a book backstage before a show, CNN posted a breaking story or U2 is working on a new song, just as you would see that your friend uploaded new photos from her trip to Europe.&#8221;</p>
<p>Presumably, that also means folks like Microsoft (MSFT), BlockBuster (BBI) and Coca-Cola (KO) can also tip you off to the fascinating things they&#8217;re up to. So in the end, this redesign isn&#8217;t about the continuing evolution of the &#8220;social graph&#8221; or whatever the hell Facebook calls its network these days. 			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>There are just 28 words permitted on Google&#8217;s famously spartan homepage. And for years now, &#8220;privacy&#8221; hasn&#8217;t been one of them. An odd choice for a company that professes to be so committed to &#8220;transparency and choice,&#8221; and one it&#8217;s finally reconsidered. Accused of violating the <a href="http://epic.org/privacy/ftc/google/Google_Letter060308.pdf">California Online Privacy Protection Act of 2003</a>, which requires Web sites to “conspicuously post” their privacy policies,  Google (GOOG) has added a direct link to its privacy policy on its homepage.  The company had previously argued that <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2008/05/27/google-fights-for-the-right-to-hide-its-privacy-policy/index.html">simply typing &#8220;Google privacy policy&#8221; into the Google search engine </a> constituted a direct link to its privacy policy.</p>
<p>But now that a judge has ordered Google <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080703/seriously-you-have-no-privacy-get-over-it/">to turn over all that YouTube user data to Viacom</a>, the company has apparently decided that <a href="http://googlepublicpolicy.blogspot.com/2008/07/privacy-link-on-googlecom.html"> a direct homepage link to its privacy policy</a> might be a good idea. So surf over to Google today and you&#8217;ll find the new link right next to the company&#8217;s copyright, but below &#8220;Advertising Programs&#8221; and &#8220;Business Solutions,&#8221; of course. See it? Look closely, now. </p>

<p><a href="http://googleblog.blogspot.com/2008/07/what-comes-next-in-this-series-13-33-53.html">&#8220;Google values our users&#8217; privacy first and foremost,&#8221;</a> Marissa Mayer, Google&#8217;s VP Search Products &#038; User Experience, explained in a post to the company&#8217;s blog. &#8220;Trust is the basis of everything we do, so we want you to be familiar and comfortable with the integrity and care we give your personal data. We added this link both to our homepage and to our results page to make it easier for you to find information about our privacy principles.&#8221;</p>
<p>And, wonder of wonders, the company still has just 28 words on its homepage. God forbid there should be 29, the earth might spin off its axis or something.</p>
<p>&#8220;Larry and Sergey told me we could only add this to the homepage if we took a word away&#8211;keeping the &#8216;weight&#8217; of the homepage unchanged at 28,&#8221; Mayer added. &#8220;Given that the new Privacy link fit best with legal disclaimers on the page, I looked to the copyright line. There, we dropped the word &#8216;Google&#8217; (realizing it was implied, obviously) and added the new privacy link alongside it.&#8221;</p>
