High Point of Apple Event: Upgraded CEO

steve-jobs-schillerAfter nearly a year out of the public eye, Apple CEO Steve Jobs returned to it yesterday at the company’s annual music event. In fact, it could be argued that public confirmation of Jobs’s health since his return to the company was truly the most significant announcement of the day.

SEC Won’t Let Steve Be

Palm Pre on June 7? No Way.

palmhailmaryjpgJune 8. That’s the day Apple’s World Wide Developers Conference kicks off and the day the company is expected to uncrate its next-generation iPhone. Could it also be the day after Palm rolls out its new Pre handset? The latest rumors suggest it is, positing June 7 as one of the release windows for the Pre and noting that the company is casting a viral video campaign slated to run through that month as well. It’s an intriguing thought, but would Palm really do such a thing?

Idiot: World of Warcraft Is the “Crack Cocaine of the Computer Game World”

wowparkThe American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no more than one to two hours of online gaming per day, so warnings that obsessive gaming might be detrimental to one’s health are not without some merit. But the suggestion that World of Warcraft is the cocaine of the gaming world and its players by extension, a legion of slathering crackheads, well, that’s going a bit far, isn’t it?

Sounds Like Steve Picked a Good Meeting to Skip

jobsfiddlingAside from a spontaneous “Happy Birthday” sung to an absent CEO Steve Jobs, Apple’s annual meeting today was something of a nonevent. Well, Motorola Picked a Great Time to Announce More Layoffs…

Talk about fortuitous timing. With the newswires full of stories about Apple and all attention focused on CEO Steve Jobs, his health and his medical leave of absence, Motorola announced it’s laying off 4,000 workers in 2009, with 3,000 of them in the company’s flagship mobile phone division.

AAPL Sauce

As one might imagine, Apple’s shareholders did not take the news of Steve Jobs’s medical leave of absence well. And learning that his “health-related issues are more complex” than first believed certainly didn’t help matters. After trading resumed, Apple shares tanked, plummeting eight percent to $78.50 (and knocking about $6.4 billion off the company’s market cap) before recovering a bit.

Stock ManAAPLation? [Updated]

On Dec. 30, with just a couple of hours left in the penultimate trading session of the year, Apple’s shares hit $87.99 and seemed to be well on their way back to $90. But before they could break $88, claims that Steve Jobs’s declining health is the real reason the Apple CEO won’t deliver the keynote at Macworld 2009 cut the legs out from under them. The rumor was quickly dismissed, but not before AAPL plunged to $85.04.
