France to Google Books Deal: Go Away or I Shall Taunt You a Second Time 

grail.jpgGoogle claims that its Book Search settlement will “bring back to life millions of lost books in a way that serves the interest of all.” And if that truly is its goal, the company is going to have to put its own Brobdingnagian self interests second to those of others–if only for a little while. To wit, Google’s announcement Monday of a number of concessions to the European Union, which seems a bit dubious of the whole thing.

Palm Pre in Europe by Christmas

palm-pre-gsm-movistar-spainNow that sales of the Pre in the states have tapered off to a point where supply and demand are roughly in parity, Palm is gearing up to bring the handset to Europe. In a statement issued this morning, the company said Telefónica’s O2 subsidiary will carry the Pre in the U.K., Germany and Ireland, while its Movistar brand will offer it in Spain.

Japan Alerts Amazon to Life’s Two Certainties

deathandtaxesAmazon’s days of booking sales from its business in Japan back to the United States may be coming to an end. The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau has demanded back taxes of $119 million from Amazon’s Japanese affiliates, Amazon Japan and Amazon Japan Logistics.

L’Oréal Unable to Do It eBay

Today the High Court in London ruled that eBay was “not jointly liable” for trademark infringements committed by its users, though it could do more to prevent them.

If it’s true that “real men have fabs,” as Advanced Micro Devices Inc. Chairman W. J. “Jerry” Sanders III once said, then AMD is the semiconductor industry’s latest eunuch. This morning the chipmaker said it will spin off its manufacturing operations, splitting itself into two companies–one to design chips and one to make them.

Google’s new Chrome browser hasn’t been available for a week yet and already, privacy advocates are sounding alarms. Over the weekend, Germany’s Federal Office for Information Security warned against using the browser, which it fears collects and centralizes a bit too much user data with Google.

T-Mobile Verkauft Eine Menge iPhones

Apple’s iPhone 3G is selling well overseas despite some activation and delivery problems. Deutsche Telekom’s wireless division, T-Mobile has sold 120,000 of the devices since they arrived at market on July 11. “Our (sales) expectations were surpassed,” T-Mobile International CEO Hamid Akhavan told German magazine Focus.
