			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>When it launched on July 10, 2008, Apple’s iTunes App Store held just 552 apps. Today, it boasts more than 100,000 in 21 categories (click on image below) that have been downloaded a total of &#8220;well over&#8221; two billion times. </p>

<p>Astonishing, really, when you think about it. The App Store isn’t even two years old yet. Nor is the iPhone software development kit. Before the SDK was released March 6, 2008, the only developers working with it were the handful of outfits Apple (AAPL) had partnered with while it was in beta. </p>
<p>So Apple is entitled to a bit of gloating. And gloat it did, in a press release celebrating the 100,000-app milestone this morning:</p>

<p>Apple continues to improve search and discovery with new features including Genius for Apps, App Store Essentials selections, sub category listings and more valuable customer reviews. With the recently introduced iTunes® 9, it&#8217;s also now easier than ever to organize and sync your apps right in iTunes and they will automatically appear on your iPhone or iPod touch with the same layout.</p>
<p>The release of iPhone OS 3.0 this summer made over 100 new features available to iPhone and iPod touch users including Cut, Copy and Paste; MMS; landscape view for Mail, Text and Notes; stereo Bluetooth; shake to shuffle; parental controls; automatic login at Wi-Fi hot spots and Push Notifications. <p>That’s the conclusion of an NPD survey that suggests that Mac households favor multiplatform environments, buy more gadgets and have the higher income needed to afford them. </p>
<p>&#8220;While Apple owners tend to own more computers and more electronics devices, there is also a high correlation among Apple owners and more affluent consumer households,&#8221; said NPD’s Stephen Baker. &#8220;The average Apple household owns 48 CE devices whereas the average computer household owns about 24.&#8221; (See chart below; click to enlarge.)<br />

<p>Not a surprise, really. Presumably, if you can afford to purchase a $1,199 laptop or desktop, you can afford to buy an assortment of other gadgetry to go along with it. A couple of other data points worth noting:</p>
<ul>
<li> 66 percent of Mac households own three computers or more, compared to 29 percent of Windows households.</li>
<li>63 percent of Mac households own an iPod. The same can be said of only 36 percent of all computer-using households.</li>
</ul>
<p>Sadly, NPD’s survey didn’t explore how PCs are used in Mac households or how they ended up there in the first place.  Are they leftovers from a PC-to-Mac switch? Are they corporate laptops? Entry-level machines for the kids?  High-end gaming machines?</p>

It doesn’t. It’s good. It’s clear that the quality of iPhone games is eclipsing its console counterparts, and that’s even more acute when you compare it against the prior generation.&#8221;</p>
<p>That’s what <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090324/ps3-xbox-wii-and-iphone/">ngmoco co-founder and Electronic Arts (ERTS) alum Neil Young said of Apple’s iconic handset</a> at the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco earlier this year, and it’s worth reflecting on a bit in light of a new report from Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi that claims the iPhone OS will soon create pricing and customer migration pressure for traditional gaming platforms.</p>
<p>Noting that some 665-760 million games may have been downloaded from the Apple (AAPL) App Store during the last 12 months, Sacconaghi estimates that the  installed base for the iPhone and iPod touch platform could amount to about one third of the total handheld gaming installed base by 2012. </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that gaming embodies the power of Apple&#8217;s App store: it has dramatically lowered the entry barriers for both developers and gamers alike, resulting in an unparalleled number of available games at affordable prices, which is creating lock-in and enhanced interest in Apple&#8217;s high-margin iPhone (and iPod Touch) platforms,&#8221; Sacconaghi writes.</p>
<p>Continuing, the analyst adds: &#8220;By most measures, gaming has been the killer App Store category, accounting for an estimated 40% of all downloads. Most importantly, we believe that gaming is providing yet another incremental, differentiated reason for consumers to purchase iPhones and iPod Touches, and creates powerful lock-in to the App Store platform and Apple products on a go forward basis.&#8221;</p>
<p>The upshot of all this is bad news for traditional gaming console developers&#8211;particularly those who have dismissed it as a novelty. &#8220;Most gaming developers today view the iPhone and other smart phones as an incremental opportunity, which targets the casual gamer but not the dedicating gaming enthusiast,&#8221; Sacconaghi explains. &#8220;Over time, however, we believe that the combination of evolutionary improvements in iPhone/iPod gaming functionality, the convenience of the App Store download model, the App&#8217;s Store leading title selection and lower price points could cause some migration among gaming enthusiasts to the Apple platform and/or pressure traditional gaming incumbents&#8217; hardware and software pricing.&#8221;</p>
<p>And this is clearly what Apple (AAPL) is aiming for. Consider these recent remarks from Phil Schiller, the company’s senior vice president of worldwide product marketing: &#8220;People are starting to see what a great gaming device this is. When you think about the companies that came before us&#8230;when you played those other systems, they seemed so cool, but now when you look at them, they don&#8217;t stack up against the iPod touch&#8230;.No Multi-Touch user experience, Games are expensive, No App Store, No iPod, Expensive Games ($25-$40) and uncomfortable retail buying experience. [There are] 607 games for PSP and 3,680 games for Nintendo DS. [But there are ] 21,178 Game and Entertainment Titles at App Store.&#8221;</p>

<p>That said,  <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB125375705433136403.html">Nintendo is cutting the price of its Wii videogame system by $50</a> in hopes of growing the market for the popular device as we head into the winter holidays. On Sunday, the company will begin peddling the Wii at a suggested retail price of $199.99.   </p>
<p>The new price is the first reduction since the console launched in November 2006 and follows similar price cuts by two rivals, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090818/100-off-and-ps3-is-still-the-most-expensive-console-on-the-market/">Sony’s (SNE) PS3</a> and <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/press/2009/0827-pricedrop.htm">Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Xbox 360</a>.</p>
<p>All three are hoping they’ll attract recession-addled gamers into the market, and according to Reggie Fils-Aime, president of Nintendo of America, they’ve got decent shot at it. &#8220;Our data shows in the U.S. alone there are 50 million consumers who are interested in playing videogames but they haven&#8217;t yet done so,&#8221; Fils-Aime told The Wall Street Journal. &#8220;They are waiting for product innovation or a slightly better value.&#8221;</p>

<p>The week that took us from August to September was one for the books over at BoomTown, especially if you’re 12. </p>
<p>Kara spent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/kara-visits-guitar-hero-hq-for-a-sneak-peek-of-gh5-band-hero-and-dj-hero/">Monday morning</a> at Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/a-sneak-peek-of-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-dj-hero/EE932085-F34B-414B-A63D-C1195B5DEB28">DJ Hero console</a>. </p>
<p>The youth movement continued with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/fancy-bar-graphs-of-the-week-zero-surprise-the-youngs-love-new-media-more-than-the-olds/">fancy bar graph</a> from Forrester Research’s annual &#8220;State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; which drove home an important fact of life for media outlets. All the money being spent on new media expansion is a fight for the young; older consumers are sticking to more reliable fare. </p>
<p>BoomTown wasn’t just about the kids though, as 23andMe co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090904/23andme-co-founder-linda-avey-leaves-start-up-to-focus-on-alzheimers-research/">Linda Avey announced her exit</a> from the gene-juicing business to focus on a foundation related to Alzheimer’s research. Avey co-founded 23andMe with Anne Wojcicki in 2006 with early money from Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki’s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin. </p>
<p>While BoomTown was keepin&#8217; it real with the kids, Digital Daily was abuzz with a spate of iPhone news. John started Monday off on the topic of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090831/its-official-apple-announces-sept-9-event/">Sept. 9 iPod event</a> with confirmation that music, indeed, will be center stage. In the Apple world, that means iPods and iTunes, though <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/want-to-play-with-the-beatles-but-dont-want-to-pay-for-rock-band-try-jamlegend-soon/">Beatles fans</a> are keeping their fingers crossed. </p>
<p>Readers got a compare-and-contrast of Apple’s (AAPL) foreign and domestic policy when John covered a potential <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090901/apple-in-iphone-talks-with-second-chinese-carrier/">two-carrier system in China</a> and the long-awaited stateside <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090903/att-iphone-mms-on-sept-25/">activation of MMS</a> features in the iPhone OS3. Meaning that while China may get the iPhone carrier flexibility so far absent in the U.S. market, American consumers are just about to get a new feature that’s been standard on every smartphone for a year or more. </p>
<p>MediaMemo covered a fluid week in the world of media giants and Top Chefs. Disney (DIS) went off to the mines and instead of seven dwarfs, found <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/spidey-meet-mickey-disney-buying-marvel-for-4-billion/">Marvel</a> and the rights to its 5,000-character portfolio. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/live-disney-marvel-call/">Disney CEO Bob Iger</a> didn’t think $4 billion was too much to pay to bring Iron Man and friends to the happiest media empire on earth and is sure the company will benefit from such &#8220;rich intellectual property.&#8221;</p>
<p>If the Disney vault got 5,000 new friends this week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090901/sold-finally-ebay-ditches-65-of-skype-for-19-billion/">eBay said goodbye</a> to one long-time partner. Peter reported that the long, difficult breakup between eBay and Skype was finalized when eBay sold a 65 percent stake in the VOIP juggernaut to the internationally mixed bag of Silver Lake, Index ventures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and a Canadian pension fund.  </p>
<p>Peter rounded out the week of motion with lots of changes in Google’s ranks. The search giant shuffled the chairs with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090902/google-still-shuffling-sales-force-self-serve-exec-david-fischer-steps-aside/">David Fischer moving</a> out of the self-serve ad business with no sign yet of a replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090904/google-swaps-out-china-bosses/">Google China</a> saw the big chair turn upside-down when Kai-Fu Lee announced that he’d leave the company this month to begin his own venture. Lee will be replaced by the tag team of Boon-Lock Yeo and John Liu, who will oversee engineering and business, respectively. </p>
<p>Not all Google’s shifts were outbound though. &#8220;Charlie’s Café&#8221; at the main campus got its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090903/googles-top-chef-leaves-las-vegas/">Top Chef </a>back after Preeti Mistry failed to make the cut on the Las Vegas iteration of the popular TV show. Regular fans of the show <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090821/googles-top-chef-tripped-up-by-shellfish/">weren’t surprised by her dismissal</a>, but at least Google can put one in the plus column this week. </p>
<p>Over at The Mossberg Solution, Katie took aim at a possible answer to a question plaguing all image-conscious technophiles: <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090901/bluetooth-headsets-that-up-the-chic-factor/">Yea or nay to the omnipresent Bluetooth earpiece</a>. Plantronics (PLT) and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone, both say yea and are upping the ante on the recently reviled symbol of cellphone userdom. Katie reviewed the fashion-forward <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/mossberg-solutionboehret-tests-two-phone-headsets/8AD52747-E975-4890-8B2D-306A3D2B590A">Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime</a>, each designed to separate its users from $130. In exchange, they&#8217;ll get redesigned outsides and some new features that might even put one back in Brad Pitt’s ear. </p>

<p>Consumers. </p>
<p>Two weeks after <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090818/100-off-and-ps3-is-still-the-most-expensive-console-on-the-market/">Sony lowered the price of the PlayStation 3</a> to $299 from $399, <a href="http://www.xbox.com/en-US/press/2009/0827-pricedrop.htm">Microsoft did the same for the Xbox 360 Elite</a> by <a href="http://kotaku.com/5346532/microsoft-confirms-xbox-360-price-drop-denies-slim-360-rumors">slashing $100 off the price</a> of the console. In addition, Microsoft cut the price of its now discontinued Xbox 360 Pro console by $50 to $249.99, while supplies last. Both price cuts go into effect tomorrow.</p>
<p>&#8220;This is really an effort to pass the cost reduction we are able to achieve through engineering and manufacturing onto consumers,&#8221; <a href="http://content.usatoday.com/communities/gamehunters/post/2009/08/microsoft-drops-price-of-120gb-xbox-360-system-/1">David Dennis, Microsoft Xbox 360 product manager, told USA Today</a>. &#8220;Reducing the number of (models) really just simplifies our manufacturing and makes it easier for our retail partners to manage their inventory and makes the purchase decision easier for consumers. It&#8217;s really a win-win-win all around.&#8221;</p>
<p>Like Sony (SNE), Microsoft (MSFT) believes the move will lure a new segment of price-conscious consumers into the market and goose sales heading into the crucial holiday shopping season, though it may not prove as effective as the company hopes. To really drive sales, says Jesse Divnich, director of analyst services at Electronic Entertainment Design and Research, Microsoft needs to drop its prices even further.</p>
<p>&#8220;Some would argue that Microsoft&#8217;s new pricing scheme represents more of a pseudo price drop than an actual price drop since consumers looking to purchase a core Xbox 360 system will still have to pay $299, as they had prior to the new hardware line-up,&#8221; Divnich explained in a recent research note to clients. &#8220;The price drop on the Xbox 360 Elite means that Microsoft&#8217;s core hardware SKU now boasts a bigger hard-drive and HDMI support than its Xbox 360 Pro predecessor.&#8221; </p>
<p>Moreover, while the  360 and PlayStation 3 might share the same $299 price point, they don’t share the same specs. &#8220;&#8230;Technologically the Xbox 360 is not at the same level as [the PS3],&#8221; Divnich said. &#8220;This puts the Xbox 360 into a tough position where it is outmatched in terms of hardware capabilities at $299 and the Nintendo Wii remains alluring to casual and price sensitive consumers at $249.&#8221;</p>
<p>Looking ahead, Divnich predicts that &#8220;Over the next year Microsoft will most likely reposition the Xbox 360 Elite model closer to the $249 price point to both pressure Sony and attract potential Nintendo Wii consumers. From a strategic standpoint this would then allow Microsoft to introduce the new Natal model in 2010/2011 at the $299 price point and still have an option for consumers cheaper than the (PS3).&#8221;</p>

<p>&#8220;We still consider this a hobby. It is clear that the movie rental business has really helped Apple TV and there are more and more customers that want to try it. <p>There&#8217;s not much of a business yet in Apple TV, as Apple’s leadership often notes. But there may be soon, with the market for connected TVs evolving as it has been. </p>
<p>In a research note issued this morning, Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster says the time is right for Apple to release the next iteration of Apple TV&#8211;one that offers DVR capabilities and supports iTunes TV show subscriptions. </p>
<p>&#8220;Apple could leverage its deep library of content with many network and cable channel content owners to provide unlimited access to a sub-library of its TV shows for a standard monthly fee ($30 or $40 per month),&#8221; Munster writes. &#8220;Such a product would effectively replace a consumer&#8217;s monthly cable bill (~$85/month) and offer access to current and older episodes of select shows on select channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>Further, Munster notes, &#8220;The selection would dictate the value, and several tiers could be offered, but we see this as one way for Apple to leverage its large iTunes content library as well as its unique Apple TV hardware in order to get digital video to the TV for a price significantly less than the average cable or satellite TV bill.&#8221;</p>
<p>Makes great sense. And if Apple (AAPL) were to launch these services in concert with App Store support, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090604/app-tv/">as Munster has suggested in the past</a>, it would be a pretty compelling proposition. And it would set the stage for the next evolution of the platform, the Apple Television, an Internet-connected TV with onboard DVR and media center functionality. </p>
<p>Says Munster:</p>
<p>&#8220;Beyond new hardware with DVR or iTunes video subscription features, we believe the 2-5 year roadmap for the Apple TV product lineup is robust. To begin with, Internet-connected TVs with interactive features will likely gain popularity in the next several years. Apple could differentiate itself in this market as a seasoned software developer competing largely with television hardware manufacturers that do not excel in the software arena. The device could also bring iPhone games, a relatively new segment for Apple, to the television.</p>
<p>&#8220;While this is unlikely in the near term,&#8221; Munster continues, &#8220;we believe the iPhone will succeed as a portable gaming platform and Apple may consider bringing higher quality games developed on a similar platform to the TV. The iPhone app developer community is already robust, and Apple could leverage those developers to enter the gaming arena on the TV. In fact, the iPhone or iPod touch could itself operate as a touchscreen gaming control for a game-centric Apple TV.&#8221;</p>
<p>Again, this makes great sense, though TV hardware is not an easy business&#8211;just ask Sony (SNE). But, as Munster aptly notes, it might be quite a bit less difficult if Apple were to &#8220;change the rules of the game,&#8221; something it’s done in a number of markets already.</p>
<p>That said, as Media Memo’s Peter Kafka just reminded me, the cable companies are working very closely with Hollywood to make sure it’s difficult for people to replace their cable service. They’d almost certainly attempt to sack an initiative like one Munster describes above.</p>

<p>This according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who in a research note today says all three are positioned for leadership in the “huge, nascent and underpenetrated” smartphone market. The smartphone, says Abramsky, is a uniquely transformational innovation in that it represents the convergence of four iconic technology markets&#8211;PC and computing, Internet, consumer electronics and wireless phones. </p>
<p>As interest in mobile email, mobile browsing and mobile applications grows, as handsets become more powerful and the networks on which they run improve, consumers will begin to bypassing PCs and the tethered Internet for the iPhone, the BlackBerry, the Pre and the mobile computing experience they offer. And that transition will create an enormous market opportunity for smartphone vendors like Apple (AAPL), RIM (RIMM) and Palm (PALM). </p>
<p>&#8220;Because of their convergence capabilities,&#8221; writes Abramsky, &#8220;we believe that smartphones possess the ability to capture users, revenues, market share and profits from not only the 1 billion unit+ per year handset market&#8211;but also from the PC market (300 million units per year), TVs (200 million units per year), personal media players (230 million units per year), digital cameras (125 million units per year), personal gaming devices (37 million units per year), portable navigation devices (32 million units per year) and other formerly discrete market segments.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bolstering his case, Abramsky adds, &#8220;At the end of calendar 2008, only 2.5% of the ~7 billion people in the world had smartphones and 24% had Internet access (only 8% are Internet subscribers, the difference being multi-user households and Internet cafes). A huge market opportunity for smartphones exists, given that globally there are 3.7 billion mobile phone subscribers, 2.5 billion consumer electronics users, 1.6 billion Internet users, and 1.1 billion PC users.&#8221; (Click on chart below to enlarge.)</p>

<p>Great news for Apple, RIM and Palm, which Abramsky sees as the market’s emerging leaders. And, as I noted earlier, great news for investor holding their shares. Says Abramsky: &#8220;We are raising our price targets on RIM from $100 to $150, on Apple from $190 to $250, and on Palm from $18 to $25, justified by increased market shares which, as visibility improves to the huge smartphone opportunity, offer upside to financials and potential multiple expansion.&#8221;</p>

And so, on Wednesday evening, Chinese citizens found themselves <a href="http://www.dailykos.com/storyonly/2009/6/25/746598/-China-blocks-all-google-services">once again unable to use Google, Gmail and YouTube </a>as their government <a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/business/8118055.stm">condemned Google as a purveyor of porn</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;According to complaints from many residents, Google&#8217;s English language search engine has spread large amounts of vulgar content that is lascivious and pornographic, seriously violating China&#8217;s relevant laws and regulations,&#8221; <a href="http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5iKLE8jdr42nKgb5B2UWsHNZk1s4AD991K8M80">foreign ministry spokesman Qin Gang told a regularly scheduled news conference</a>. “I’d like to stress that google.com, as an Internet enterprise providing services in China, should earnestly abide by Chinese laws and regulations.”</p>
<p>The disruption of Google (GOOG) services follows a widely criticized mandate from Beijing requiring all computers sold in the country to include Green Dam, an application designed to prevent citizens from viewing  &#8220;offensive&#8221; content, which in the Chinese government’s case includes all manner of material. From <a href="http://opennet.net/chinas-green-dam-the-implications-government-control-encroaching-home-pc">a report by the Open Net Initiative</a>, an academic consortium dedicated to the study of censorship and surveillance:</p>

The version of the Green Dam software that we tested, when operating under its default settings, is far more intrusive than any other content control software we have reviewed. Not only does it block access to a wide range of web sites based on keywords and image processing, including porn, gaming, gay content, religious sites and political themes, it actively monitors individual computer behavior, such that a wide range of programs including word processing and email can be suddenly terminated if content algorithm detects inappropriate speech. The program installs components deep into the kernel of the computer operating system in order to enable this application layer monitoring. The operation of the software is highly unpredictable and disrupts computer activity far beyond the blocking of websites.</p>
<p>&#8230;The deeply intrusive nature of the software opens up several possibilities for use other than filtering material harmful to minors. With minor changes introduced through the auto-update feature, the architecture could be used for monitoring personal communications and Internet browsing behavior. Log files are currently recorded locally on the machine, including events and keywords that trigger filtering. The auto-update feature can used to change the scope and targeting of filtering without any notification to users.

<p>Nintendo really should have cut its losses yesterday and cancelled its E3 press conference after Microsoft’s (MSFT) Project Natal demo. How could it possibly have trumped Redmond, Wash.’s controllerless game control system? Certainly not with <a href="http://gizmodo.com/5275846/wii-vitality-sensor-turns-wii-into-definitive-nursing-home-console">the Wii Vitality Sensor it showed off today</a>.</p>
<p>The peripheral’s big gaming advancement? <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/06/02/nintendo-brings-out-mario-and-other-new-titles-to-keep-its-top-spot-in-video-games/">It records a user’s vital signs</a>. A nice addition to the Wii Fit, but a far cry from Microsoft’s efforts to turn gamers themselves into controllers.</p>
<p>As I said yesterday, “<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090601/sucks-to-be-nintendo/">sucks to be Nintendo.</a>” And today, it most certainly does.</p>

The GDC is the largest annual gathering of professional videogame developers, so the fact that Young, an Electronic Arts (ERTS) alum turned iPhone developer, delivered his remarks from a stage that will soon host Nintendo president Satoru Iwata and Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima says a lot about the esteem in which game developers hold the device&#8211;<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090305/yeah-and-ipod-wasnt-a-threat-to-the-walkman-either/">dismissive comments from Sony (SNE) be damned</a>. </p>
<p>Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone is still in its early stages as a gaming platform and make no mistake, <em><a href="http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7960513.stm">it is a viable gaming platform</a></em>, said Young. And he should know; ngmoco&#8211;the developer of popular iPhone game titles like Rolando, Dropship, and Topple&#8211;just closed <a href="http://blog.ngmoco.com/post/89062180/ngmoco-closes-new-investment-round">a $10 million second-round of funding</a> after only nine months in business.</p>
<p>&#8220;Don&#8217;t let the haters tell you it sucks compared to the [Nintendo] DS or the [Sony] PSP,&#8221; Young said of the iPhone. &#8220;It doesn&#8217;t. It&#8217;s good. It&#8217;s clear that the quality of iPhone games is eclipsing its console counterparts, and that&#8217;s even more acute when you compare it against the prior generation.&#8221; Why?</p>
<p>Unlike its console rivals, the iPhone is always connected, users always carry it, it offers unique features that can&#8217;t be found anywhere else&#8211;a touchscreen, an accelerometer, connectivity. In this way, said Young, the iPhone is similar to the Nintendo DS. When that device first launched, many thought it would be beaten into whimpering submission by the far more robust PSP. But that never happened. &#8220;Nintendo was able to win that battle by combining great software with hardware that it understood very well,&#8221; Young said. &#8220;If Nintendo made the iPhone, what would they focus on? I think they would build games that could only be on the iPhone. The designs would be progressive, discontinuous, and would have the user and the user&#8217;s context always in mind. They would have great underlying game design with native device functionality at the core.&#8221;</p>
<p>His point: Graphics and sound alone don&#8217;t necessarily make a great app. As Nintendo has shown us with the DS and the Wii, gaming is all about the platform. And Apple has clearly created one to be reckoned with.  </p>

Seven years in the making, OnLive promises to create <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/03/23/steve-perlmans-onlive-could-turn-the-video-game-world-upside-down/">an on-demand gaming experience that rivals those offered by dedicated videogame consoles</a>. It&#8217;s capable of streaming <a href="http://kotaku.com/5181300/onlive-makes-pc-upgrades-extinct-lets-you-play-crysis-on-your-tv">even the most advanced, CPU-intensive games</a> to television and computer&#8211;Macintosh or PC&#8211;without lag or a reduction in quality. &#8220;We&#8217;re providing you with the latest high-end titles, the exact same ones you would see at Target or Best Buy, in the same release windows,&#8221; <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2009-03-24-onlive_N.htm">Perlman told USA Today</a>. &#8220;But what is really cool is you don&#8217;t need any high-end hardware to play them. There&#8217;s no physical media. It&#8217;s an all-digital platform. You never need to upgrade your equipment at home.&#8221;</p>
<p>A compelling proposition. A potentially disruptive one too, if OnLive is able to deliver it with the reliability and ease of use it promises. <a href="http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=216200305">Said IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon</a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s a good idea and has potential, but the thing I need reassurance on is being able to deliver this over the network. In games there&#8217;s no wiggle room&#8211;when you press a button to fire you want to fire,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But if it works, this could be a disruptive.&#8221;</p>

But the suggestion that World of Warcraft is the cocaine of the gaming world and its players by extension, a legion of slathering crackheads, well, that&#8217;s going a bit far, isn&#8217;t it? </p>
<p>Not according to Sweden&#8217;s Youth Care Foundation, which has just finished a report that pegs <a href="http://www.thelocal.se/17840/20090226">WoW as the single most dangerous game on the market</a> and the one with the highest risk of addiction. &#8220;There is not a single case of game addiction that we have worked with in which World of Warcraft has not played a part,&#8221; <a href="http://www.telegraph.co.uk/scienceandtechnology/technology/4863325/World-of-Warcraft-more-addictive-than-cocaine.html">hyperbolized the report&#8217;s author, Sven Rollenhagen.</a> &#8220;It is the crack cocaine of the computer game world. Some will play it till they drop.&#8221; </p>
<p>And indeed, some will. Last year, <a href="http://www.thelocal.se/15742/20081117/">a 15-year-old Swedish boy did just that after a 20-hour marathon</a>. But it seems a bit heavy handed to tar WoW for the incident. It&#8217;s not as if the boy suffered a temporary state of full-blown paranoid psychosis or ended up in a red-light district tricking for game time. He passed out. Had his <strike>dealers</strike>parents stepped in, the incident might never have occurred. <a href="http://www.worldofwarcraft.com/info/faq/parentalcontrols.xml">WoW does offer a pretty robust set of parental controls.</a></p>
