Exclusive Xbox 360-Netflix Partnership Not So Exclusive Anymore
So much for Xbox 360’s game console exclusivity on Netflix streaming. This morning, the DVD-by-mail pioneer said that beginning sometime next month, owners of Sony’s PlayStation 3 game consoles will be able to stream movies and TV shows from Netflix.

Netflix Investors Inexplicably Emptying Their Queues
Evidently, Netflix is as recession-proof as Hollywood. Reporting third-quarter earnings after market close Thursday, the DVD-by-mail pioneer posted net income of $30.1 million, up 48 percent from a year earlier, on revenue of $423.1 million. That’s 52 cents a share. Analysts had been expecting 46 cents a share on $419.9 million in sales. Why, then, are investors punishing the company in after-hours trading?

New iMacs May Include “Bag of Hurt” Option
Asked in October 2008 why Apple wasn’t yet offering Blu-ray DVD drives as an option on machines, Apple CEO Steve Jobs said the licensing issues were too complex to make doing so worthwhile. “Blu-ray is a bag of hurt,” he quipped. Well, no longer. Because Apple is planning to refresh its iMac desktop computer in the next few weeks, and when it does, it may well offer a Blue-ray drive option.

Weekend Update, 8.22.09–The Musical Chairs Edition
The week ending Aug. 21 began Aug. 17 with another round of digital musical chairs–BoomTown reported that David Dickman, VP of West Coast sales for Yahoo, will be leaving the company at the end of the month for Warner Bros. to work in digital sales. Also, after a five-month tour of Europe and its finer Web establishments, Yahoo seems poised to name a new international head.

Streaming Video Revolutionaries Actually Closet DVD-by-Mail Users
The digital video revolution may be hastening the DVD toward its end, but there’s quite a bit of life left in the old format yet. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said as much during the company’s last earnings call when he remarked that he sees its DVD-by-mail business peaking in five to 10 years. And consumer sentiment would seem to bear that out.

What’s in Netflix’s Queue? 10.6 Million Subscribers.
The econalypse has done great things for Netflix, sending recession-addled customers running to embrace its way-cheaper-than-cable DVD-by-mail and streaming-movie service. The online DVD-rental pioneer posted earnings that beat Wall Street estimates and announced that its subscriber base has grown to 10.6 million.

Mind if I Pay These Late Fees With a Few of My Blockbuster Shares?
Blockbuster in a Monday filing told the Securities and Exchange Commission what anyone who’s observed its fast-declining fortunes has known for some time now: The company isn’t sure it can stay in business much longer. In a PricewaterhouseCoopers assessment included as part of its latest 10-K, Blockbuster acknowledged that its financial situation raises “substantial doubt about the Company’s ability to continue as a going concern.”

Netflix Announces Boot Camp-Free Streaming for Mac
Ironic, isn’t it? Netflix is finally adding Mac support to its “Watch Instantly” video streaming service–and we have Microsoft to thank for it. This morning, the online DVD rental pioneer began rolling out a second-generation streaming media player that includes support for Intel-based Macs, and the Firefox Web browser as well. Making it all possible: Silverlight, Microsoft’s Flash substitute.

Apple Notebook Event: MacBook Pro Shipping Tomorrow
As rumored, the DVD slot has been moved to the left side. A rumor not true, however: Blu-ray. There’s no Blu-ray capability in the new Apple notebooks.
Ports on left side include a new mini-display port. The left side also features a battery indicator.
Other points : A solid-state drive option. The unit is less than 1-inch thick, .95 inches to be exact.

Weekend Update, 10/10/08
The best thing that can be said of the week ending Oct. 10, 2008, is this: It’s over.
Marked by panic selling and wet-your-pants fear, it was one of the worst weeks in the financial world’s history–a week that cut the legs out from under Google, beat Yahoo until its market cap bled purple and caused the Dow Jones Industrial Average to swing more than one thousand points on an intra-day basis.

Rent. Rip. Restraining Order.
The legal broadside Hollywood lobbed at RealNetworks last week has upset the company’s carefully prepared plans to offer a mainstream means of legally copying DVDs. A judge has issued a temporary ban on sales of Real’s RealDVD software in the wake of a lawsuit brought against it by the Motion Picture Association of America.
