<p>The week that took us from August to September was one for the books over at BoomTown, especially if you’re 12. </p>
<p>Kara spent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/kara-visits-guitar-hero-hq-for-a-sneak-peek-of-gh5-band-hero-and-dj-hero/">Monday morning</a> at Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/a-sneak-peek-of-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-dj-hero/EE932085-F34B-414B-A63D-C1195B5DEB28">DJ Hero console</a>. </p>
<p>The youth movement continued with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/fancy-bar-graphs-of-the-week-zero-surprise-the-youngs-love-new-media-more-than-the-olds/">fancy bar graph</a> from Forrester Research’s annual &#8220;State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; which drove home an important fact of life for media outlets. All the money being spent on new media expansion is a fight for the young; older consumers are sticking to more reliable fare. </p>
<p>BoomTown wasn’t just about the kids though, as 23andMe co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090904/23andme-co-founder-linda-avey-leaves-start-up-to-focus-on-alzheimers-research/">Linda Avey announced her exit</a> from the gene-juicing business to focus on a foundation related to Alzheimer’s research. Avey co-founded 23andMe with Anne Wojcicki in 2006 with early money from Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki’s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin. </p>
<p>While BoomTown was keepin&#8217; it real with the kids, Digital Daily was abuzz with a spate of iPhone news. John started Monday off on the topic of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090831/its-official-apple-announces-sept-9-event/">Sept. 9 iPod event</a> with confirmation that music, indeed, will be center stage. In the Apple world, that means iPods and iTunes, though <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/want-to-play-with-the-beatles-but-dont-want-to-pay-for-rock-band-try-jamlegend-soon/">Beatles fans</a> are keeping their fingers crossed. </p>
<p>Readers got a compare-and-contrast of Apple’s (AAPL) foreign and domestic policy when John covered a potential <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090901/apple-in-iphone-talks-with-second-chinese-carrier/">two-carrier system in China</a> and the long-awaited stateside <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090903/att-iphone-mms-on-sept-25/">activation of MMS</a> features in the iPhone OS3. Meaning that while China may get the iPhone carrier flexibility so far absent in the U.S. market, American consumers are just about to get a new feature that’s been standard on every smartphone for a year or more. </p>
<p>MediaMemo covered a fluid week in the world of media giants and Top Chefs. Disney (DIS) went off to the mines and instead of seven dwarfs, found <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/spidey-meet-mickey-disney-buying-marvel-for-4-billion/">Marvel</a> and the rights to its 5,000-character portfolio. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/live-disney-marvel-call/">Disney CEO Bob Iger</a> didn’t think $4 billion was too much to pay to bring Iron Man and friends to the happiest media empire on earth and is sure the company will benefit from such &#8220;rich intellectual property.&#8221;</p>
<p>If the Disney vault got 5,000 new friends this week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090901/sold-finally-ebay-ditches-65-of-skype-for-19-billion/">eBay said goodbye</a> to one long-time partner. Peter reported that the long, difficult breakup between eBay and Skype was finalized when eBay sold a 65 percent stake in the VOIP juggernaut to the internationally mixed bag of Silver Lake, Index ventures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and a Canadian pension fund.  </p>
<p>Peter rounded out the week of motion with lots of changes in Google’s ranks. The search giant shuffled the chairs with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090902/google-still-shuffling-sales-force-self-serve-exec-david-fischer-steps-aside/">David Fischer moving</a> out of the self-serve ad business with no sign yet of a replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090904/google-swaps-out-china-bosses/">Google China</a> saw the big chair turn upside-down when Kai-Fu Lee announced that he’d leave the company this month to begin his own venture. Lee will be replaced by the tag team of Boon-Lock Yeo and John Liu, who will oversee engineering and business, respectively. </p>
<p>Not all Google’s shifts were outbound though. &#8220;Charlie’s Café&#8221; at the main campus got its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090903/googles-top-chef-leaves-las-vegas/">Top Chef </a>back after Preeti Mistry failed to make the cut on the Las Vegas iteration of the popular TV show. Regular fans of the show <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090821/googles-top-chef-tripped-up-by-shellfish/">weren’t surprised by her dismissal</a>, but at least Google can put one in the plus column this week. </p>
<p>Over at The Mossberg Solution, Katie took aim at a possible answer to a question plaguing all image-conscious technophiles: <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090901/bluetooth-headsets-that-up-the-chic-factor/">Yea or nay to the omnipresent Bluetooth earpiece</a>. Plantronics (PLT) and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone, both say yea and are upping the ante on the recently reviled symbol of cellphone userdom. Katie reviewed the fashion-forward <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/mossberg-solutionboehret-tests-two-phone-headsets/8AD52747-E975-4890-8B2D-306A3D2B590A">Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime</a>, each designed to separate its users from $130. In exchange, they&#8217;ll get redesigned outsides and some new features that might even put one back in Brad Pitt’s ear. </p>

<p>This Weekend Update is particularly exciting because of all the things happening here at <strong>All Things Digital</strong>. There is, of course, the upcoming <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090521/off-to-d7-the-more-things-change-the-more-they-well-are-a-changin/"><strong>D7 Conference</strong></a>, which promises to be more tech-extravaganza fun than a tweet from <a href="http://twitter.com/sockington">@sockington</a> (if only half as cute), but this past week has also seen the launch of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090517/walt-mossberg-weve-got-an-app-for-that/">our very own iPhone app</a>, meaning <strong>ATD</strong> has gone mobile&#8211;smart news for your smartphone (we&#8217;re still working out potential taglines).</p>
<p>Like past <strong>D: All Things Digital</strong> conferences, <strong>D7</strong> boasts a great lineup of speakers and industry leaders. This year, the gang that&#8217;s all here is full of personality, wit, chutzpah and all that other good stuff that&#8217;s sure to make this one of the most interesting and revelatory events yet. </p>
<p>For instance, Microsoft (MSFT) is rumored to be debuting its latest upgrade to its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090519/microsoft-to-debut-new-search-at-d-all-things-digital/">search engine, Kumo, at <strong>D7</strong></a>. The conglomerate sorely needs a win here, especially in its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090518/google-has-search-market-share-microsoft-not-so-much/">losing battle to the ubiquitous Google</a> (GOOG) for market share in search. Search was a big topic in general this week as Kara Swisher <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090519/liveblogging-the-yahoo-search-chalk-talk-kill-the-10-blue-links/">liveblogged Yahoo&#8217;s (YHOO) &#8220;chalk talk&#8221;</a> and interviewed one of its speakers, head of Yahoo Labs and Yahoo Search Strategy <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090520/yahoo-search-guy-raghavan-speaks-actually-he-woos/">Prabhakar Raghavan</a>, an exchange in which Kara gets Raghavan to exclaim WOO! for &#8220;web of objects.&#8221; In addition, Google search bigwigs Larry Page, Eric Schmidt and Marissa Mayer could be found across several universities this week dispensing <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090519/google-cofounder-larry-pages-advice-to-the-class-of-2009-be-more-lazy/">&#8220;be more lazy&#8221; speeches</a> to fresh graduates.</p>
<p>This was also the week with the IPO for OpenTable, the online restaurant reservation company being the first in Silicon Valley to go public in a long time. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090518/will-opentable-be-just-what-silicon-valley-ordered-this-week/">Kara Swisher</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090521/opentable-shareholders-apparently-excited-to-book-reservations-in-empty-restaurants/">John Paczkowski</a> give their takes on the offering.</p>
<p>It was also a week of many faceoffs. Here&#8217;s a smattering of those that went <em>tete-a-tete</em> this week:</p>
<ul>
<li><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090520/thats-declaratory-relief-against-idiocy-right/">Craigslist vs. Henry McMaster</a>. Winner: Craigslist. The online classifieds site retaliated with a lawsuit of its own after the South Carolina Attorney General threatened legal action. </li>
<li><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090522/brussels-palace-of-justice-apparently-has-only-single-courtroom/">Microsoft vs. the European Commission</a>: In the latest antitrust case development, Microsoft and the EC have been going head to head over scheduling issues, of all things.</li>
<li><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090522/l%e2%80%99oreal-unable-to-do-it-ebay/">L&#8217;Oréal vs. eBay</a>. Winner: eBay (EBAY). L&#8217;Oréal lost its latest lawsuit against the Web auctioneer over trademark-infringing cosmetic products sold on the site.</li>
<li><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090522/college-humor-dudes-newest-product-an-amazoncom-prank/">CollegeHumor vs. Amazon</a>: More of a prank than a bout, CollegeHumor gamed Amazon&#8217;s (AMZN) system by artificially driving up sales of the Three Wolf Moon T-shirts, complete with outlandishly positive product reviews.</li>
<li><a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090519/broadband-soccer-for-all-comcast-disney-make-nice-with-espn-360-pact/">Comcast vs. Disney</a>: Though Comcast (CMSCA) wasn&#8217;t pleased with Disney&#8217;s (DIS) partnership with online video site Hulu, the two companies were able to put aside their differences to form an ESPN360 pact.</li>
</ul>

<p>Brand new MySpace CEO <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/back-to-school-new-myspace-ceo-van-natta-starts-today-and-joined-by-former-aol-exec-jones-as-coo/">Owen Van Natta</a> started things off Monday with his first day on the job. He was joined by new COO and former AOL exec Mike Jones and new chief product officer and former Sling Media exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090427/myspace-musical-chairs-jason-hirschhorn-also-in-at-myspace-as-chief-product-officer/">Jason Hirschhorn</a>. Down in Los Angeles at the AlwaysOn OnHollywood conference, Boomtown ran smack into Huff Post mastermind Arianna Huffington, who extolled the virtues and abilities of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090428/arianna-huffington-talks-about-new-managing-editor-singh/">new managing editor Jai Singh</a>, former editor-in-chief of CNET Networks. At AOL, in preparation for spinning off the Time Warner (TWX) Online unit, new CEO Tim Armstrong began appointing new senior execs and spinning off existing ones. Platform-A president and former Yahoo (YHOO) sales exec <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090429/exclusive-platform-a-head-coleman-out-at-aol-as-well-as-cfo-and-more-to-come/">Greg Coleman, who joined the AOL team in February, is leaving the company, to be replaced by Jeff Levick</a>, who is leaving Google (GOOG)&#8211;where he had a close relationship with Armstrong. CFO Nisha Kumar is also leaving AOL, and a search is underway for her replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090429/time-warner-makes-it-official-aol-spinoff-is-coming/">MediaMemo has more</a> on Time Warner&#8217;s decision to spin off AOL. A number of Flickr engineers were laid off Wednesday, but <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090430/flickr-co-founder-butterfield-and-chief-architect-henderson-working-on-stealth-start-up/">Chief Architect Cal Henderson</a> has left the company of his own accord and is working on a stealth start-up with Flickr co-founder Stewart Butterfield. Last, but not least, one of the voices covering the digital scene has found a new gig. Owen Thomas, self-described &#8220;scourge of [Silicon] Valley,&#8221; is leaving Valleywag to head up GE (GE) unit NBC Universal’s new &#8220;Bay Area&#8221; Web site, whose motto is “Locals Only.” He&#8217;ll be replaced by fresh-faced Ryan Tate, recently the night editor for Gawker. <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090501/who-shot-valleywag-gossip-bloggers-thomas-outgoing-and-tate-incoming-speak/">Both reporters talked to BoomTown</a> on Friday about the changes.</p>
<p>MediaMemo wrote on Monday about Condé Nast <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090427/is-conde-nast-shuttering-portfolio/">shutting down Portfolio</a>&#8211;both the print magazine and the accompanying Web site. On a cautionary note, MM outlined the reasons why Portfolio&#8217;s business magazine peers <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090428/why-portfolios-peers-shouldnt-be-celebrating/">should not celebrate the loss of a competitor</a>, even (or especially) during tough economic times. Is the meteoric ascension of Twitter flattening out? According to a Nielsen Online study, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090428/is-twittermania-running-facefirst-into-quittermania/">60 percent of Twitter&#8217;s users leave after a month</a>. This was met with a lot of skepticism so Nielsen ran the numbers again with the same results&#8211;<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090430/nielsen-were-sticking-with-our-60-twitter-quitter-number/">and this time it&#8217;s sticking with them</a>. MediaMemo also had an explanation for why the long-awaited <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090501/why-it-took-more-than-four-months-and-millions-of-dollars-to-get-lost-on-hulu/">deal between Disney (DIS) and Hulu</a> took months and months and millions of dollars to finally come together. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090430/finally-disney-hulu-deal-announced/">Digital Daily had more on that story.</a></p>
<p>Digital Daily also had more info on the ever-evolving Palm (PALM) Pre story. First, a rumor that Palm plans to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090429/palm-pre-on-june-7-no-way/">launch the handset on June 7</a>&#8211;which would be crazy, given the fact that June 8 is both the first day of Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) Worldwide Developers Conference and the day that those in the know expect the next-generation iPhone to drop. Then, there&#8217;s an assertion by Collins Stewart analyst Ashok Kumar based on supply chain research that Palm has <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090430/analyst-the-pre-is-doa/">greatly reduced its production numbers</a>. Time will have to tell, though, because Palm certainly isn&#8217;t talking yet. Of course, things could be worse. Dell (DELL) hasn&#8217;t even solidified plans for its rumored smartphone, and already, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090429/dude-your-phone-is-dull/">no one really cares</a>.</p>
<p>Dell&#8217;s new Adamo laptop and Studio One 19 desktop aren&#8217;t causing much excitement either. In this week&#8217;s Personal Technology column, Walt Mossberg reports that although both machines look good and function well, <a href="http://ptech.allthingsd.com/20090429/dell-aims-for-style-with-new-laptop-and-family-model/">neither is groundbreaking</a>. In <a href="http://mailbox.allthingsd.com/20090429/improving-pc-performance/">Mossberg&#8217;s Mailbox</a>, Walt answered readers&#8217; questions about improving performance on a PC, using peripheral devices with an iPhone and installing Apple&#8217;s OS X on a Windows machine. And in this week&#8217;s <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090428/ipod-to-reach-out-and-touch-someone/">Mossberg Solution</a>, Katie Boehret tested three apps from the iTunes App Store that make it possible for the iPod touch to function like an iPhone.</p>

<p>Just as <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090427/disney-gets-ready-finally-to-hold-hands-with-hulu/">MediaMemo predicted</a>, Walt Disney Co. has finally taken a stake in Hulu, the video-streaming site operated by General Electric&#8217;s (GE) NBC Universal, News Corp. (NWS) and Providence Equity Partners. Under the terms of the deal announced today, Disney will sign on as a joint partner in the venture and bring full-length episodes of long-absent programs like &#8220;Lost” and &#8220;Grey&#8217;s Anatomy” to Hulu. Financial terms and the structure of the deal weren&#8217;t disclosed, but sources say Disney&#8217;s stake in the venture will be <strike>close to 30</strike> 27 percent.</p>
<p>“From our landmark iTunes deal to our pioneering decision to stream ad supported shows on our ABC.com player, Disney has sought to meet the constantly evolving viewing habits of our consumers, and today’s Hulu announcement is the next important step in that ongoing journey,” Disney CEO Bob Iger bloviated. “Disney and Hulu share a focus on delivering the highest-quality entertainment experience and we look forward to working with Hulu to build value for our consumers, our brands and our shareholders.” </p>
<p>A few points worth noting here before the full press release below. This is mostly a broadcast deal. Aside from a smattering of Disney Channel shows, it includes very little cable programming. There is, for example, nothing from ESPN. Presumably, that’s because Disney doesn’t want to upset the folks who actually pay to watch that stuff.</p>
<p>Disney’s decision to join Hulu shows the company is confident that the site’s audience is distinct enough from audiences served by cable, ABC.com and its other sites that there’s no real risk of cannibalizing them. And that runs contrary to what many networks assume about online.</p>
<p>Disappointingly, there&#8217;s no mention in the release of classic animation, whether shorts or features. </p>
<p>As MediaMemo has noted, this is a <b>big</b> deal for Hulu, which has now allied with three of the four big broadcast networks.</p>
<p>CBS (CBS) is now the sole holdout among big program providers. When asked about its position, a spokesman replied with this statement: &#8220;CBS has long employed open, non-exclusive content partnerships that allow fans across the internet to engage with our programming in such a way that we control our distribution, sales and profit. We continue to discuss similar arrangements with additional partners as we grow our online audience based on the strength of our content, and the passion of the communities it creates. The Company also believes that controlling our own rights for that content&#8211;in all media&#8211;preserves its value in a multi-platform business system.&#8221;</p>

Digital pranks were the name of the game as <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090401/new-from-google-labs-google-april-fools-overkill/">Google (GOOG) and others heaped so many tepid hoaxes</a> upon us that we wanted to call April <em>Fold</em> so as to quickly end this round of gags.</p>
<p>But no bag of tricks was needed for one Web site to April Fool itself into crying wolf about an <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090403/sorry-to-get-you-all-a-twitter-but-google-is-not-in-late-stage-talks-to-acquire-the-hot-microblogging-service/">imminent Google (GOOG) acquisition of Twitter</a>, when a real story around the corner was about<a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090403/heres-a-real-google-twitter-story-google-turns-tweets-into-ad-dollars/">Google turning Turbo Tax tweets into ads</a>. </p>
<p>Meanwhile, one of the biggest jokesters of them all, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090401/no-joke-the-onion-wins-one-of-journalisms-biggest-awards/">The Onion, won one of the biggest awards in journalism, a Peabody</a>, meaning that the best sense of humor goes to that panel of judges. And to Stephen Colbert, who was willing to entertain (for a while) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090403/twitters-no-biz-model-stone-on-the-colbert-report/">Twitter spokesmodel Biz Stone’s biz-model-less thoughts in an interview on &#8220;The Colbert Report.&#8221;</a> Also on BoomTown this week: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090331/facebook-cfo-gideon-yu-out-fast-growing-social-network-says-its-doing-fine-financially/">Facebook’s former CFO Gideon Yu is out</a>, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090402/the-entire-facebook-goodbye-gideon-we-are-the-money-champions-memo/">as was a leaked memo</a> from Mark Zuckerberg about Yu’s departure and the company’s situation.</p>
<p>A sense of humor is certainly an invaluable feather to have in your cap these days. Digital Daily wrote about the most recent doom-and-gloom predictions and events to happen in this econalypse, like analysts’ predictions of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090403/youtube-the-money-pit/">YouTube losing $470 million in 2009</a>, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090401/ipo-market-just-really-really-lousy/">the barren IPO-less wasteland VCs are bemoaning</a> and a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090403/feb-chip-sales-i-call-bottom-until-the-next-bottom/">major global slump in semiconductor sales</a>. Other headlines weren’t quite so dreary: <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090331/googles-mission-to-organize-the-worlds-start-ups-and-make-them-universally-acquirable/">Google’s foray into VC land</a>, the folks at <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090402/rim-shot/">BlackBerry HQ celebrating surprisingly good fourth-quarter results</a> and the world&#8217;s worst-kept secret, the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090403/ibm-mulling-sun-resource-action/">anticipated merger between IBM (IBM) and Sun</a> (JAVA).</p>
<p>There was a similar mix of dark clouds and silver linings over at MediaMemo. The National Collegiate Athletics Association <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090402/the-ncaa-blows-the-whistle-on-twitters-march-tweetness/">forced Twitter and partners AT&#038;T (T) and Federated Media to take down one of its first ad campaigns, “March Tweetness,”</a> crying copyright foul. Also running afoul with big companies in legal waters, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090401/seeqpod-offers-free-music-but-its-lawyers-dont-come-cheap/">free music Web site Seeqpod filed for bankruptcy</a>. And video site <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090401/video-site-veoh-cuts-staff-boots-ceo-bets-on-browser-plug-in/">Veoh laid off a significant amount of staff and kicked out its old CEO</a>, replacing him with founder Dmitry Shapiro and refocusing the company on its “Video Compass” browser plug-in.</p>
<p>Online video is generally a turbulent space these, but the waiting is the hardest part for <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090330/disneys-decision-hulu-youtube-or-something-else/">Hulu when it comes to the rumored Disney deal</a> in which Disney (DIS) seems to be playing the field. Other gems of the week were URL-shrinking Web service <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090330/is-a-shorter-web-address-worth-big-money-bitly-raises-2m/">bit.ly’s raising of $2 million</a> and media mogul <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090402/live-from-the-cable-show-rupert-murdoch-and-jeff-bewkes/">Rupert Murdoch’s Kindle envy</a>. </p>
<p>In a new Mossblog, Walt Mossberg gives us his <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/20090401/first-impressions-of-the-new-blackberry-app-store/">first impressions of the BlackBerry App World</a> store in which Research in Motion (RIMM) takes a bold step into what was formerly the sole domain of Apple (AAPL). <p>Finally, our exciting Woz-watch, after many weeks, has come to a sad end: <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090401/woz-gets-hipchecked-off-the-dance-floor-big-big-sigh/">Steve Wozniak was voted off &#8220;Dancing with the Stars&#8221;</a> this week after one misstep too many. And while the company persists in claiming it has the “luxury of time” to develop the business model through which it will recoup its investment in the popular video site, it’s clear that time is running out.  To wit, <a href="http://blogs.barrons.com/techtraderdaily/2009/04/03/given-youtube-losses-should-google-buy-twitter/">a report this week from Credit Suisse</a> that predicts YouTube will earn $240 million in revenue in 2009. Which wouldn&#8217;t be half bad were it not for the fact that <a href="http://www.multichannel.com/article/191223-YouTube_May_Lose_470_Million_In_2009_Analysts.php">YouTube is on track to lose $470 million in 2009</a>. The research house figures YouTube will rack up about $711 million in operating expenses this year&#8211;$360 million on bandwidth alone. </p>
<p>An unfortunate disparity, that. Is it one that can be corrected? Credit Suisse seems to think so. &#8220;In our view, the issue for YouTube going forward is to increase the percentage of its videos that can be monetized (likely through more deals with content companies) and to drive more advertiser demand through standardization of ad formats and improved ad effectiveness,&#8221; it explained in a research note. Of course, this is exactly what YouTube is doing. On Monday the company said it has agreed to <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/autoNews/idUKTRE52T7SL20090330">an ad revenue-sharing partnership with Disney</a> (DIS) that will see it putting ABC and ESPN videos on YouTube. A small first step, but one that could portend a trend. Especially, if as Google (GOOG) CEO Eric Schmidt says, the company hopes to eventually make money out of it.</p>

<p>Digital Daily was on hand at Macworld &rsquo;09 Monday. Despite the flurry of wonky reporting about the health and/or &#8220;imminent death&#8221; of Steve Jobs&#8211;<a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090106/to-err-is-human-to-live-divine-how-exactly-no-one-got-it-right-about-steve-jobs-health/">put into perspective here</a> by BoomTown&#8211;nothing too remarkable happened during Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) final appearance at the annual event. Phil Schiller did a solid job <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090106/macworld-all-about-the-mac-ilife-09/">delivering the keynote</a> in Jobs&#8217;s place, introducing a new <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090106/macworld-09-17-macbook-pro/">17-inch MacBook Pro</a> with an eight-hour internal battery and some innovative updates to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090106/macworld-iwork-09/">iWork</a> and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090106/macworld-all-about-the-mac-ilife-09/">iLife</a>. Schiller ended his keynote with the announcement of changes in pricing and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090106/macworld-09-one-last-thing-itunes-pricing-tiers/">digital rights management for iTunes</a>, punctuated by the surprise appearance of crooner Tony Bennett. Apparently, as Bennett sang, the best is yet to come. <p>MediaMemo reported from CES about the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090109/mark-cuban-wants-to-know-if-youre-are-you-ready-for-some-football-in-3-d/">pervasive 3-D theme</a> of the conference and wondered whether people would pay cash to see a football game in 3-D at a theater instead of just staying home. There was the ongoing litany of the casualties of the econalypse: &#8220;Semantic&#8221; ad network <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090106/one-less-ad-network-peer39-shuts-down-semantic-ad-network-concentrating-on-technology/">Peer39</a> shut down its ad operation this week, Hearst is about to pull the plug on the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090109/another-newspaper-down-hearst-about-to-pull-the-plug-on-seattles-post-intelligencer/">Seattle Post-Intelligencer</a>, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090106/forbes-layoffs-finally-arrive-19-fired-from-magazine-web/">Forbes announced layoffs</a> and Sir Howard Stringer announced the elimination of thousands of jobs at <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090108/sony-ceo-howard-stringer-at-ces-i-wish-i-could-tell-you-that-im-recession-proof/">Sony</a> (SNE). MediaMemo also caught the much anticipated introduction of Palm&#8217;s (PALM) new smartphone, the <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090108/live-from-ces-palm-unveils-nova/">Palm Pre</a>, and its new Web OS, a combo Palm deems superior to the iPhone and that many others consider Palm&#8217;s last chance for survival. The product&#8217;s success or <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090109/the-iphone-non-killer/">failure</a> will have a lot to do with its pricing, about which there&#8217;s much <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090108/palm-to-price-itself-into-oblivion/">disbelief</a>. </p>
<p>BoomTown had the lowdown this week on an amusing rumor about a Microsoft-backed (MSFT) <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090107/microsoft-funded-yahoo-run-well-except-without-microsoft/">run at Yahoo</a> (YHOO), the emergence of <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090109/like-boomtown-said-bartz-is-tops-on-the-yahoo-ceo-short-list-heres-the-reaction/">Carol Bartz</a> as the top prospect for Yahoo CEO and <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090108/the-entire-internal-microsoft-memo-on-new-dell-and-verizon-deal/">Microsoft&#8217;s deal with Verizon</a> (VZ) and Dell (DELL) to distribute search. Jerry Yang submitted to the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090109/jerry-yang-and-sue-decker-talk-about-yahoos-connected-tv-at-ces/">all-seeing eye</a> of BoomTown&#8217;s Flip camera along with Yahoo President Sue Decker to talk about Yahoo&#8217;s new product, Connected TV. The camera also caught some <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090108/ces-tastic-no-taxi-lines-barry-manilow-and-a-geek-zz-top-but-as-always-scoble-stalked/">chatty attendees</a> and a few demos, including one of a new Disney (DIS) music product given by a guy who looked like a member of ZZ Top.</p>
<p>Speaking of ZZ Top, catch gadget godfather <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/20090109/walt-and-katie-take-some-gadgets-for-a-test-drive/">Walt Mossberg</a> trying out some 3-D glasses on his annual odyssey around the convention floor. All he needs is a longer beard and a &#8216;32 Ford and he could be a band member, too. Walt and colleague Katie Boehret caught many of the more interesting gadgets on video, and Walt <a href="http://mossblog.allthingsd.com/20090108/walt-previews-gadgets-at-ces/">previewed some more</a> for FOX News.</p>

<p>Indeed, just this morning, Heard on the Street&#8217;s Martin Peers suggested EA would be a good acquisition, particularly for an entertainment company. &#8220;Any entertainment company could be interested in EA, given continued growth in videogame sales, the potential for cross-fertilization with TV and film storylines and advertisers&#8217; interest in buying space in games,&#8221; <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122547849321388675.html">Peers wrote</a>. &#8220;Disney makes the most sense. EA&#8217;s biggest assets include its sports games, such as &#8216;Madden NFL,&#8217; which would fit with Disney&#8217;s ESPN cable network. Disney could also save at least part of the roughly $200 million it spends annually to develop its own games.&#8221;</p>
<p>An interesting theory. Ironic too, since before EA was in the news for its current ill fortune, it was making headlines for its <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/category/electronic-arts/">dogged pursuit of Take-Two Interactive</a>. That said, with only $2.6 billion in cash on its books, Disney would have to borrow quite a bit to push such a deal through, which seems unlikely in the current market.</p>

Today it holds something less than that&#8211;about 19.2%. But to look at the headlines, you&#8217;d think it controlled the market in its entirety. A quick search on Google <a href="http://news.google.com/news?ned=us&amp;hl=en&amp;q=iphone&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;as_drrb=q&amp;as_qdr=w&amp;as_mind=2&amp;as_minm=6&amp;as_maxd=9&amp;as_maxm=6">returns 19,035 results for &#8220;iPhone&#8221;</a>&#8211; from Jun. 2, 2008 to today. Why? Because in a few hours, Apple CEO Steve Jobs will address the company&#8217;s Worldwide Developers Conference in San Francisco, at which he is <em>expected</em> to unveil the next version of the company&#8217;s iPhone. </p>
<p>And for Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) sake, I hope he does. Because with expectations running this high, I&#8217;d hate to see what happens if he doesn&#8217;t. Although the new Apple Store housed in a life-size replica of the Golden Gate Bridge pictured in the invite would certainly take some of the heat off &#8230;</p>
<p>Anyway, I&#8217;ll be live-blogging from inside Moscone West in San Francisco starting at 10 a.m. PDT. <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080607/aapl-2/">Here&#8217;s something to read while you wait</a> &#8230;</p>

<li>From Moscone West: This is crazy. They just opened a single door to let cameras in and the media rushed the gate. Its like that 1979 Who concert in Cincinnati.</li>

<li> The hall in Moscone West is filling quickly to the sounds of Jerry Lee Lewis. From the looks of it media and developers are here in equal numbers.</li>
<li> Jobs takes the stage. I&#8217;m sitting about 20 rows back, but even I can see he&#8217;s looking pretty thin from here. He gets right into it, pulls up a slide of a stool and describes Apple as a three-legged company. Macs, music and the iPhone.</li>
<li>Jobs will spend the morning talking about the iPhone. This afternoon Apple will discuss OS X &#8220;Snow Leopard.&#8221;</li>

<li>Talking about iPhone SDK: In the past 96 days, 25,000 people have applied to Apple&#8217;s paid developer program. It&#8217;s had 250,000 downloads of the iPhone 2.0 software SDK.
<li>Three parts to iPhone 2.0: enterprise, SDK, &#8220;new features.&#8221;</li>
<li>Apple has built exchange support into iPhone 2.0: push email, push contacts, push calendar, auto-discovery, global address lookup, remote wipe. Also supports Cisco VPN security.</li>
<li>Everything enterprise has told us they&#8217;ve wanted in the iPhone, we&#8217;ve built into it right out of the box, he says.</li>
<li>35% of Fortune 500 companies have participated in iPhone 2.0 beta: top five banks, securities firms, 8 of 10 top pharma companies, 6 of 7 leading airlines. Lots of support from higher-ed market as well.</li>
<li>Cutting to video now: Execs from Disney (DIS), Genentech, U.S. Army discussing iPhone 2.0 beta: all of them talking about the extraordinary demand for the iPhone among their employees.</li>
<li>&#8220;iPhone 2.0 is extraordinarily well-integrated with Microsoft (MSFT) Exchange.&#8221;</li>
<li>Video goes on: Talking about security now. Army rep talking about how important remote wipe is. Disney exec describes iPhone as &#8220;an enterprise-level device that packs the power of a laptop into a device the size of a phone.&#8221; Video ends.</li>
<li>Moving on to iPhone SDK. Jobs welcomes Scott Forstall to the stage to discuss the SDK. &#8220;We&#8217;re opening up the same developer tools we use internally,&#8221; he says. &#8220;Developers will create applications in exactly the same way we do.&#8221;</li>
<li>Core OS: Core operating system of iPhone uses the same elements as OS X. Offers a quick overview of Cocoa Touch, Xcode, Interface Builder, Tethered Debugging, Instruments and other developer tools, before moving on to a quick demo of Interface Builder.</li>
<li>Launches Xcode and creates a new project in Xcode. App will use built-in address APIs as well as core location APIs to locate contacts within a 10-mile radius of the iPhone.</li>
<li>He opens Interface Builder and drags and drops some buttons and fields onto an iPhone test screen on his desktop.</li>
<li>The UI finished, he opens the iPhone simulator to test it out. It works.</li>
<li>He links the UI features up to the code he&#8217;s written and bang, it&#8217;s linked up and ready to go. That&#8217;s it.</li>
<li>Forstall says developer response to the iPhone SDK has been enormously positive. He refers to a number of developer quotes that really lionize the platform: &#8220;It blows away anything we&#8217;ve seen from RIM&#8221; says one.</li>
<li>Forstall invites a Sega rep up to the stage to demo some of their work for the iPhone. Sega&#8217;s Ethan Einhorn offers a bit of background on their Super Monkey Ball project. He notes that the company was able to demo an early version of the game after just a few weeks of work at the iPhone SDK launch announcement. Now, after a few more months of work, they&#8217;ve managed to create a full-featured version of the game.</li>
<li>Super Monkey Ball will be available at the launch of the App Store for $9.99.</li>
<li>Up next: eBay&#8217;s Ken Sun. The iPhone has become the No. 1 mobile device for accessing eBay, Sun says.</li>
<li>Six weeks ago, eBay began developing a new interface for the iPhone and was able to quickly pull one together.</li>
<li>The application supports auction watching and bidding. Bids placed on an iPhone are instantly registered in eBay&#8217;s system. The eBay app will be available for free when the App Store launches.</li>
<li>Loopt&#8217;s Sam Altman takes the stage to talk about the company&#8217;s location-based social-networking app: &#8220;We make serendipity happen.&#8221; Pffft. He pulls up the app and uses it to locate a friend and a list of the thing&#8217;s she&#8217;s done today. He notes that the friend is close by at a cafe and sends her a quick message asking if she&#8217;s available for lunch.</li>
<li>Next up: TypePad and its mobile blogging application. Michael Sippey takes the stage and after talking up TypePad as a blogging platform, he moves on to the company&#8217;s new iPhone app.</li>
<li>Demo will focus on photoblogging. He browses the photos on his iPhone, selects a picture, crops it, adds it to a blog post, publishes it to his blog, taps view and Safari launches and displays his new post. Very fast, very slick. Oddly, no mention of a cut-and-paste feature.</li>
<li>This app will also be available at the launch of the App Store for free.</li>
<li>Associated Press follows TypePad. AP&#8217;s Benjamin Mosse describes AP&#8217;s Mobile News Network, which uses the device&#8217;s location API to provide location-based local news, photos and video.</li>
<li>The app also supports citizen journalism and permits AP readers to send the news agency their own photos and news reports. This app will also be available for free at the launch of the App Store.</li>
<li>Next up: Brian Greenstone from Pangea software. The company has ported two of its games from OS X to the iPhone.</li>
<li>The first is Enigmo. The second is Cromag Rally&#8211;a 3D caveman racing game. The graphics in both games look great. Greenstone notes that in this particular game, the iPhone itself is the controller&#8211;in this case, the steering wheel.</li>
<li>Greenstone really talking up the SDK, says porting the game was almost a no-brainer.</li>
<li>Forstall welcomes Moo-Cow-Music&#8217;s Mark Terry to the stage to demo Band. It&#8217;s a collection of virtual instruments that allows users to create music on the iPhone. He pulls up a keyboard and plays the first few bars of John Lennon&#8217;s &#8220;Imagine.&#8221;
<li>He moves on to a drum kit, and then to a &#8220;blues interface&#8221; that includes all the instruments you need to play the blues. And now the bass; he plays a few bars of Pink Floyd&#8217;s &#8220;Money.&#8221; He notes that tracks can be recorded and mixed together to create songs individually or collaboratively.</li>
<li>Onstage now is Jeremy Schoenherr from MLB.com to demo an app developed exclusively for the iPhone. The app offers real-time updates of game info and also nearly real-time video highlights. Videos will reportedly be uploaded minutes after a play is made.</li>
<li>Next: Modality, which will demo the first of two apps designed for the medical industry. S. Mark Williams takes the stage to talk about a learning application for med students. Looks like they&#8217;ve created an iPhone version of &#8220;Netter&#8217;s Anatomy.&#8221; All the graphics have been ported to the iPhone, and you can zoom in and out, and use touch to locate different areas of the body, the same way you use the Google maps application. Modality says that within weeks of the App Store launching, it will be offering this application as well as others for different education markets.</li>
<li>Mark Cain from MIMvista onstage now. Looks like we&#8217;ve got a medical imaging application. Onscreen now is a CT scan and a PET scan overlaid on an iPhone screen. (My god, this is really cool.)</li>
<li>The application relies on the iPhone&#8217;s pinch, slide, touch and drag to navigate images. You can also toggle to a planar view as well. Whoa&#8211;it supports movies as well. Cain stresses that this is a highly complex and computing-intensive application that&#8217;s been ported to the iPhone. And his company was able to do it with relative ease.</li>
<li>Up now: Digital Legends to demo another game. They&#8217;ve developed Krull, a fantasy action game, on the iPhone. Accelerometer is used to move the character, to jump, swing weapons, etc. The graphics are very impressive.</li>
<li>The person demoing notes that in some cases they&#8217;re better than those of handheld gaming platforms. The app will be available later this year. What we were just shown&#8211;which was damn impressive&#8211;was pulled together in just two weeks.</li>
<li>Forstall back onstage. He&#8217;s talking about one feature that developers have requested that wasn&#8217;t included in the SDK: The ability to run applications in the background as well as the foreground.</li>
<li>He pulls up a Windows Mobile task manager to demonstrate the wrong way to address that request. &#8220;This is nuts,&#8221; he says. Apple has come up with a far better solution: We&#8217;ve developed a push notification service.</li>
<li>Apple will maintain a persistent IP connection to the iPhone through which third-party applications can push notifications to the device. These can be badges, text notifications and audio notifications. There is also a unified push notification service for all developers that preserves battery life, maintains performance and works over the air. This will be available in September, but Apple will begin seeding it soon.</li>
<li>Jobs strolls back onstage to discuss some new features.</li>
<li>The first: Contact Search. Your standard contact search.</li>
<li>Second: Full iWork document support: pages, keynote. MS office support as well: Word, PowerPoint. (Cut-and-paste support?) </li>
<li>Third: Bulk delete and move.</li>
<li>Fourth: Save images from email.</li>
<li>Fifth: A landscape view of the calculator.</li>
<li>Sixth: Parental controls.</li>
<li>Seventh: Languages: there are two forms for Japanese, two forms for Chinese (simplified and traditional) including one that allows you to draw the characters with your finger. &#8220;One of the great advantages of not having a bunch of plastic keys on your keyboard,&#8221; says Jobs.</li>
<li>What about 8, 9 and 10? Cut-and-paste, chat and a better camera? No? Damn.</li>
<li>&#8220;iPhone 2.0 raises us to a whole new level,&#8221; says Jobs. &#8220;We&#8217;ll release it in July. It will be free to all iPhone owners, and $9.95 for iPod Touch users.</li>
<li>Moving on to the App Store. It will be on every iPhone, and it supports wireless downloads, automatic installs and automatic updates. Developers can set the price of their apps. Developers take 70%. No credit card or hosting fees. Apps will be DRM&#8217;d for FairPlay.</li>
<li>If a developer chooses to offer their app for free, Apple won&#8217;t charge them anything. Apps under 10 MG can be downloaded over the air. Apps above that size can be downloaded over iTunes or via Wi-Fi.</li>
<li>Apple has also developed an enterprise version of the apps store that will allow companies to distribute their custom applications only to their employees on their phones.<br />
There&#8217;s another distribution method as well: Ad Hoc. Developers can mail apps to up to 100 users.</li>
<li>Now we&#8217;ve got something entirely new: It&#8217;s called MobileMe. Phil Schiller takes the stage to talk about it. What&#8217;s MobileMe? &#8220;It&#8217;s like Exchange for the rest of us.&#8221;<br />
(Haha.) He just slipped up and called active sync &#8220;active stink.&#8221;</li>
<li>With MobileMe, iPhone users can have mail, calendar, etc. pushed to their phones. Information is stored in the cloud and then pushed to all a user&#8217;s Apple devices. Change a meeting on your phone, the update is pushed to MobileMe, which then pushes that update to your laptop and the machines of the people who are scheduled to attend it.</li>
<li>All this is done over the air. MobileMe works directly with Apple apps. It also works with Outlook for PC users. Apple has also built a suite of Web-based applications. You&#8217;ll find them at me.com. The applications look pretty robust. More like those you&#8217;d see on the desktop than on the Web.</li>
<li>Mail, contacts, calendar, photos&#8211;which can be sent directly to MobileMe from the phone&#8211;iDisk for storage.</li>
<li>He&#8217;s demoing it now: supports drag and drop. Also supports real-time contact search with links to Google (GOOG) maps for directions.</li>
<li>Calendar supports drag and drop as well. Want to reschedule a meeting? Drag it to another date and time.</li>
<li>Moves on to iDisk, which has a new interface. All this is tightly integrated with the iPhone. He checks a push email on his phone, saves the sender as a contact. Now he checks his MobileMe account online. The email and new contact are already there.</li>
<li>Now he creates a new calendar entry on his laptop. He check his phone and there it is. Now he leaves the iPhone view up on the screen behind him, walks back over to the laptop and adds another meeting to his calendar. A few seconds later, the iPhone screen updates with that new meeting. He demonstrates the same thing with a photo.</li>
<li>MobileMe will be available for $99 a year, with 20 gigabytes of storage. It will be available in July. And yes, MobileMe does replace .mac. Mac users will be automatically upgraded.</li>
<li>And what about that cut-and-paste support? No? Anyone? Bueller?</li>
<li>Jobs back onstage. In a few weeks, it will be the iPhone&#8217;s first birthday, he says.<br />
He shows some photos of the crowds outside the Manhattan Apple store.</li>
<li>Jobs: &#8220;This is the phone that has changed phones forever.&#8221; He says the iPhone has 90% customer satisfaction; 98% of iPhone users are mobile browsing; 94% are using email; 90% are text messaging; 80% are using 10 features or more. &#8220;You can&#8217;t even find 10 features on other phones,&#8221; he adds.</li>
<li>Apple has sold 6 million phones so far, Jobs says. Now we need to address our next challenges:</li>
<li>1. 3G</li>
<li>2. enterprise support</li>
<li>3. Third party applications</li>
<li>4. more countries</li>
<li>5. more affordable.</li>
<li>Jobs notes that everyone wants one, but 56% of consumers Apple surveyed said it was too expensive.</li>

<li>iPhone 3g is thinner, full plastic back, solid metal buttons, but same display, camera, a flush headphone jack, dramatically improved audio. &#8220;Feels even better in your hand, if you can believe that,&#8221; Jobs says.</li>
<li>How does the iPhone 3G tackle the challenges I just mentioned?</li>
<li>Video of EDGE vs. 3G pageload on Safari: 3G takes 21 seconds, EDGE still grinding away. Web site is National Geographic, very image heavy. EDGE still grinding; audience begins laughing. EDGE takes 59 seconds; 3G is 2.8 times faster than EDGE.</li>
<li>Jobs notes that 3G speeds approach those of Wi-Fi. Apple compared the iPhone 3G to two other state-of-the-art 3g phones, and the iPhone is 36% faster than Nokia N95 and Treo 750. </li>
<li>Video of same comparison with an email attachment: 3G downloads it in five seconds; EDGE takes 18 seconds. 3G is 3.6 times faster.</li>
<li>Talking about battery life now: iPhone 3G has 300 hours standby. 2G talk time: 10 hours; 3G talk time: five hours&#8211;that&#8217;s an industry-leading metric.</li>
<li>Five to six hours of browsing. Seven hours of video. Twenty-four hours of audio.<br />
One other thing that benefits from fast data is GPS, and we&#8217;ve built that into the iPhone 3G, Jobs notes</li>
<li>Jobs talking about how location based services for the iPhone are about to explode. He&#8217;s demoing GPS tracking now. Jobs tracks a car driving down San Francisco&#8217;s Lombard Street.</li>
<li>Now, he circles back to enterprise support, third-party apps, and international distribution. Apple hoped to put the iPhone in 25 countries. World map appears on screen. Theme from &#8220;It&#8217;s a Small World&#8221; plays as countries in which the iPhone is distributed are quickly colored in. Half-hearted &#8220;Small World&#8221; sing-along fades after a few verses.</li>
<li>Lots of applause for this: &#8220;We&#8217;ll be rolling out the iPhone 3G in 70 countries over the next few months.&#8221; The next time you&#8217;re in Malta and you need an iPhone, it&#8217;ll be there.<br />
Deals for all these countries are signed, sealed and delivered, according to Jobs.</li>
<li>Moving on to price: iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for 8GB version. Huge applause.<br />
&#8220;With think at that price point it will be affordable for everyone,&#8221; Jobs says. The 16GB model will be $299 and will be available in black and white. Apple will start rolling the iPhone out in 22 of the largest countries on July 11.</li>

<li>Looks like that&#8217;s it. &#8220;Take advantage of the great sessions and go make some great products,&#8221; says Jobs. And the keynote ends. Sadly, there&#8217;s no &#8220;one more thing&#8221; moment today &#8212; no video-chat support, no chat support, no cut-and-paste.<br />

<p>Today&#8217;s an important one for Apple (AAPL). The company is hosting a &#8220;town hall&#8221; meeting to discuss <a href="http://apple20.blogs.fortune.cnn.com/2008/03/06/what-to-expect-at-todays-apple-event/">an iPhone software roadmap</a>. Presumably, this event will see the release of more details about the eagerly anticipated iPhone SDK, but perhaps not the debut of the SDK itself.  Certainly, that&#8217;s the impression given by the invitation to the event&#8211;&#8221;Please join us to <em>learn</em> about the iPhone software roadmap, including the iPhone SDK and some exciting new enterprise features.&#8221; <em><a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=8104">Enterprise features</a></em>? Ready to eat your words, Dulaney?</p>
<p>But whether the SDK is released to developers today or not, this event promises to be a watershed one. Because it heralds a vast new addressable software market for developers. After all, the iPhone and iPod touch run OS X, and presumably most future iPod models will as well. Which likely means that applications written for Mac in <a href="http://developer.apple.com/tools/xcode/">Xcode</a>&#8211;Apple&#8217;s development toolset&#8211;<em>will be deployable on any OS X device.</em> They&#8217;ll be &#8220;write once, run anywhere&#8221;&#8211;anywhere there’s OS X, that is. And word on the street has it that <a href="http://www.9to5mac.com/new_iphone_apps">we may see a few of them as early as today</a>.</p>
<p>The event begins at 10 a.m. PT (1 p.m. ET). Updates to follow &#8230; </p>
<p><strong>UPDATES:</strong></p>

<li> The next iPhone software update will include support for Push Email, Push Calendar, Push Contacts, Global Address List, Cisco VPM, Certificates and WPA2/802.1x, Security Policies, Device Config, and Remote Wipe. Wow.
<li> Responding to customer demand for Microsoft Exchange on the iPhone, Apple has gone ahead and licensed ActiveSync for the device.
<li> Exchange will be native to the iPhone. Jobs must be muttering multiple &#8220;BOOMS&#8221; from backstage.
<li> Nike and Disney have been testing Exchange for iPhone and are pretty happy with it.
<li> Scott Forstall is now taking the stage to talk about the iPhone SDK. Apple giving developers the same tools and APIs it uses to develop iPhone apps.
<li> Apple took Cocoa and created Cocoa Touch, a new framework for building apps.
<li> The OS X kernel is the same for desktop and iPhone.
<li> Xcode has been expanded to support iPhone. It will code complete APIs for the iPhone SDK. (<em>See? What&#8217;d I tell you: write once, run anywhere there&#8217;s OS X.</em>)
<li> SDK includes Interface Builder and iPhone Simulator that allow developers to run their apps on their desktops. &#8220;It runs on a Mac and simulates the entire API stack on your computer,&#8221; Forstall says.
<li> Forstall builds a quick &#8220;Hello World&#8221; app, drops it on the iPhone and runs it. Quick and easy.
<li> &#8220;This is an app I just built in two minutes. But we wanted to see what we could build in two days. So we built Touch FX,&#8221; Forstall says. It&#8217;s an image editor that allows you to warp photos by pinching them.
<li> Forstall then demos Touch Fighter, a point-and-shoot game.
<li> Did I mention <a href="http://developer.apple.com/iphone/program/">the SDK is available today</a>? Good luck downloading it &#8230;
<li> Whoa. Travis Boatman from Electronic Arts takes the stage and demos an iPhone version of Spore. They&#8217;ve already ported 18 levels. (<em>Hope SDK includes tool for building spare batteries.</em>)<br />

<li> Ha! Super MonkeyBall for iPhone. &#8220;This is not a cellphone game. This is a full console game. &#8230; We had to fly in a developer to upscale the art for the iPhone,&#8221; Einhorn says.
<li> Jobs back onstage. Announces the iTunes App Store. &#8220;You&#8217;re a developer who just spent two weeks or a bit longer writing an application. What&#8217;s your dream?&#8221; Jobs asks. &#8220;To get it in front of every iPhone user.&#8221;
<li> Apps can be downloaded wirelessly or sideloaded via iTunes. &#8220;This is the exclusive way to distribute iPhone applications,&#8221; Jobs says, adding: &#8220;We are controlling distribution.&#8221;  (<em>We will control the horizontal. We will control the vertical. You are about to participate in a great adventure. You are about to experience the awe and mystery which reaches from the inner mind to&#8230; The iTunes App Store.</em>)
<li> Developers price their own apps and they get 70% of the revenues they generate. Apple takes 30% for running the App Store.  &#8221; &#8230; To be clear, we don&#8217;t intend to make money off the App Store. We&#8217;re basically giving all the money to the developers, and the 30% that pays for running the store, that&#8217;ll be great.&#8221;
<li> Apple plans to release an iPhone 2.0 software update in June that will include enterprise capabilities, App Store, etc.

<p>Leave it to ABC to devise a service that offers all the convenience of video-on-demand with all the annoyance and vapidity of broadcast TV in one joyless package. This morning the network and its affiliates announced <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/25/business/media/25abc.html"><em>fast-forward-disabled video on demand</em></a>, which prevents viewers from bypassing commercials.</p>
<p>Designed to combat the now nearly ubiquitous DVR, the service offers viewers the chance to watch ABC shows like “Lost” and “Desperate Housewives” for free, at any time they choose, as long as they&#8217;re willing to suffer through the advertisements that accompany them. And just to make sure that they do, participating affiliates will disable their video-on-demand services&#8217; fast-forwarding capability. “This does counter the DVR,” Anne Sweeney, the president of the Disney-ABC television group (DIS), told the New York Times. “You don’t need TiVo if you have fast-forward-disabled video on demand. It gives you the same opportunity to catch up to your favorite shows.”</p>
<p>And your not-so-favorite commercials. Which would seem to make it about as uncompelling a proposition as &#8230; well, as over-the-air broadcast TV. But ABC, which has been testing the service with Cox Communications in Orange County, Calif., insists it&#8217;s got an audience. The company says 93% of users it surveyed said they would be willing to give up the fast-forwarding option and watch the commercials if they were given VOD programming for free. </p>
<p>So perhaps the 30-second TV ad has a few more years left in it still. But only a few. According to a study by the Association of National Advertisers and Forrester Research, <a href="http://www.broadcastingcable.com/article/CA6533738.html?rssid=193">62% of marketers believe TV advertising has become less effective in the past few years</a>. And 87% said they plan to increase their online ad spending this year, while many said they will cut their TV ad buys substantially when DVR penetration tops 50%.</p>

Tonight, tech&#8217;s highest roller gave what may have been <a href="http://www.microsoft.com/events/executives/billgates.mspx">his final Vegas performance</a>. Sadly, it was far from his most memorable. All glitz and very little glory&#8211;certainly not the sort of glory befitting such an iconic figure. In the end, the memory of the event that lingers longest is not Gates reflecting on his storied career in tech or prognosticating about the future, but Gates singing &#8220;Big Pimpin&#8217; &#8221; to rap star Jay-Z. Which was funny as hell, but not exactly &#8220;<a href="http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/exec/billg/books/default.mspx">The Road Ahead</a>&#8221; material. Anyway, here&#8217;s what we got, more or less in reverse chronological order as I live-blogged his keynote:</p>
<p><strong>7:40 p.m.</strong> A few more moments of guitar wankery from Slash and &#8230; well, I guess that&#8217;s it. Bach, not Gates, ends the keynote. &#8220;I&#8217;ll see you again next year,&#8221; he says as Gates waves briefly and leaves the stage. Must be rushing off to that billion-dollar-a-hand poker game at Caesars &#8230; And the lights go up. That <em>is</em> it. Quite a disappointment. Take away the celebrity appearances and what&#8217;s left is a well-rehearsed series of anticlimaxes and rehashes of demos past. A pity, really.<br />
<strong>7:38 p.m.:</strong>  Gates: She&#8217;s pretty good. But I&#8217;ve got my own ringer here &#8230; (Pleeeeease let it be Wayne Newton)<br />
Nope. It&#8217;s Carrot Top. <em>Kidding &#8230;</em> It&#8217;s Slash it&#8217;s from Guns n&#8217; Roses playing &#8220;Welcome to the Jungle&#8221; for real. He doesn&#8217;t miss a note either. Dry ice smoke and flashing lights.<br />
<strong>7:36 p.m.:</strong> Bach challenges Gates to a Guitar Hero 3 match. Bach invites Guitar Hero champion Kelly Clarkson to play against Gates. &#8230; She plays Guns n&#8217; Roses&#8217; &#8220;Welcome to the Jungle&#8221; and doesn&#8217;t miss a note.<br />
<strong>7:35 p.m.:</strong> Gates using the device to navigate video archives of keynotes past. Microsoft&#8217;s version of iTunes&#8217; &#8216;Cover Flow.&#8217; Messy.<br />
<strong>7:33 p.m.:</strong> Gates uses the device to scan a photo of the Vegas skyline behind him. Clicks on the Venetian. The screen displays information for his keynote address. Pops another note indicating Ballmer&#8217;s playing nickel slots at another casino. Laughter.<br />
<strong>7:31 p.m.:</strong> Bach brings Gates back onstage to discuss the future. &#8230; Gates takes the stage again with a handheld video recognition device. He points it at Bach and clicks. It recognizes Bach, displays his name onscreen, along with a note saying he owes Gates money.<br />
<strong>7:29 p.m.:</strong> Fellow presenter uses Tellme to search out a movie theater, browse movie listings, purchase tickets for a movie and then send them to a friend. Pretty slick, especially given the size of the mobile advertising market.<br />
<strong>7:27 p.m.:</strong> On to Windows Mobile and Microsoft&#8217;s Tellme service.<br />
<strong>7:26 p.m.:</strong> Bach and fellow presenter now demoing &#8220;Sync&#8221;&#8211;an in-car voice-command technology that enables Zune owners to sync their Zunes to their car stereos and then navigate their music libraries with voice commands.<br />
<strong>7:24 p.m.:</strong> Bach talks about Zune Social as a service that drives music transactions from discovery to purchase. Find a song you like on a friend&#8217;s page, click on it and purchase from Zune Marketplace. Again, haven&#8217;t we heard all this before?<br />
<strong>7:22 p.m.:</strong> Listening habits are tracked via &#8220;cards.&#8221; Bands can create their own Zune Social pages as well. Essentially, MySpace for music.<br />
<strong>7:20 p.m.:</strong> Zune Social apparently tracks your listening habits in real-time. It&#8217;s all about &#8220;people-powered music discovery.&#8221;<br />
<strong>7:18 p.m.:</strong> Bach talking up the Zune now. &#8230; Demoing Zune Social.<br />
<strong>7:17 p.m.:</strong> British Telecom is to begin selling Xbox 360s as Media-Room based set-top boxes. Price of relocation to UK not included with activation fee &#8230;<br />
<strong>7:15 p.m.:</strong> In addition to this, MGM will also be adding its film library to Xbox Live. End result: Twice as many hours of on-demand programming as any cable provider out there.<br />
<strong>7:14 p.m.:</strong> ABC and Disney will be bringing their programming to Xbox Live.<br />
<strong>7:13 p.m.:</strong> Gates brings Robbie Bach onstage to talk about Xbox 360.<br />
<strong>7:11 p.m.:</strong> Using Microsoft Silverlight technology, NBC and MSN will put some 3,000 hours of high-definition footage of the Beijing Olympics online. Wow: 3,000 hours of video. What a massive effort. First of its kind.<br />
<strong>7:10 p.m.:</strong> Gates commenting on broadcast television: &#8220;It simply isn&#8217;t as fulfilling an experience as online video.&#8221;<br />
Here comes another video segment. &#8230; Bob Costas pitching.<br />
<strong>7:09 p.m.:</strong> Moving on to Silverlight. Gates says NBC has chosen Microsoft as its exclusive online video partner for the 2008 Olympics.<br />
<strong>7:08 p.m.:</strong> He finishes up the design, lays his phone down on the screen and it automatically emails his design to friends for review.<br />
<strong>7:07 p.m.:</strong> Gates, thankfully, back onstage for another demo. Wait, what&#8217;s this. Another Surface demo?! Didn&#8217;t we see this last year? <a href="http://d5.allthingsd.com/20070530/d5-steve-ballmer/">Yes, we did&#8211;but given by Steve Ballmer, not Gates</a>. Gates using Microsoft&#8217;s Surface multitouch computer to demo a snowboard-design service.<br />
<strong>7:05 p.m.:</strong> The big achievement being touted here seems to be the connection between these services and the single log-on. As Dan Aykroyd might say: Isn&#8217;t that AMAZING?<br />
<strong>7:04 p.m.:</strong> Windows Live Photo Gallery &#8230; in browser photo editing, sharing (via email or Flickr) and exporting to blog. Bor-ing. They would have been better off playing the farewell video again. That &#8216;Bib Pimpin&#8217; segment was comedy gold.<br />
<strong>7:02 p.m.:</strong> First up: Windows Live Calendar now with &#8230; wait for it &#8230; multiple calendar overlays (YAY! sigh&#8230;)<br />
But wait, there&#8217;s more &#8230; Windows Live Events, an invitation/event organizing service. They really should have called it Windows Live eVites &#8230;)<br />
<strong>7 p.m.:</strong> Gates brings Mika Krammer, a director of product management for Windows, onstage to demo some new features of Windows Live.<br />
<strong>6:59 p.m.:</strong> And here comes the product line-up overview: Windows Vista, Windows Live, Windows Mobile &#8230;.<br />
<strong>6:58 p.m.:</strong> A key building block of the second digital decade, the centerpiece building block will be. &#8230; (drum roll, please) &#8230; Microsoft Windows!<br />
<strong>6:56 p.m.:</strong> &#8220;Devices will know our context and location,&#8221; Gates continues. There will be new modes of interaction and natural interfaces. &#8220;We&#8217;re very interested in simpler ways of navigating our technology.&#8221; If he were going to announce Microsoft Bob 2.0, now would be the perfect time to do it. Nope. Ah, well. &#8220;The software industry will build these new modes of interaction&#8211;touch, voice, gesture&#8211;into the software.&#8221;<br />
<strong>6:55 p.m.:</strong> And now for a few predictions. &#8220;In the future Microsoft products and services will run on the desktop and in the cloud,&#8221; he says. Would that be the cloud with all the Google AdWords all over it? &#8220;And 3-D environments will exist for Web experiences, high-quality video and audio in a pervasive way.&#8221; Make way for Third Life &#8230;<br />
&#8220;Devices and services will be connected.&#8221; As an example, Gates talks about photos automatically being uploaded to digital-memory application.<br />
<strong>6:54 p.m.:</strong> Gates back onstage discussing the coming transition in leadership at Microsoft when he will step down from his day-to-day role as the company&#8217;s chairman. He says Microsoft is aligned well for success with Steve Ballmer, Ray Ozzie and others.<br />
Moving on &#8230; &#8220;The second digital decade heralds the following: high definition experience is everywhere.&#8221;<br />

<strong>6:49 p.m.:</strong> Gates calls Jon Stewart and asks about a co-anchor job. Stewart turns him down.<br />
Gates calls Hillary Clinton. She turns him down as a running mate, so he calls Obama:<br />

<strong>6:48 p.m.:</strong> Steven Spielberg reviews Gates&#8217;s audition reel (&#8221;X-Men&#8221; and &#8220;Matrix&#8221; re-enactments; Gates in Wolverine get-up, Gates and Ballmer in Matrix-style black trench coats) and denies him a part in his next film.<br />
<strong>6:47 p.m.:</strong> Footage of Gates calling Bono in the middle of a U2 concert. Gates plays guitar riff on &#8220;Guitar Hero&#8221; for Bono. Bono tells him there&#8217;s no place for him in U2. Which is OK, I&#8217;m sure, since there&#8217;s certainly no place for Bono at Microsoft.<br />
<strong>6:46 p.m.:</strong> My God &#8230; Gates in recording studio with Jay-Z&#8230; Holy &#8230;  Gates singing &#8220;Big Pimpin&#8217;.&#8221; Wild laughter and applause. &#8220;It was great,&#8221; Jay-Z tells Gates, before turning to the camera and muttering, &#8220;not so much.&#8221;<br />
<strong>6:45 p.m.:</strong> Various Microsoft execs talking about Gates. Clip of Gates in office playing with action figures: &#8220;Never doubt the power of software.&#8221; Laughter.<br />
Quickly followed by Gates in gym working out with Matthew McConaughey, who doesn&#8217;t really strike you as a Windows user.<br />
<strong>6:44 p.m.:</strong> &#8220;This is my last keynote. Come July, it will be the first time I won&#8217;t be working at Microsoft since I was 17.&#8221; And here comes the inevitable farewell video &#8230;.<br />
<strong>6:42 p.m.:</strong> He mentions the progression of digital entertainment&#8211;music, movies, photos. The trend is clear: all media and entertainment will be software driven in the second digital decade. And in the third, it will all be driven by Microsoft Windows! Muahahahahaha. Kidding &#8230; Moving on &#8230; &#8220;I&#8217;ll soon step down as chairman.&#8221;<br />
<strong>6:40 p.m.:</strong> Gates finally takes the stage. He recalls his first keynote in 1994, a time when Windows &#8216;95 was first coming together. &#8220;It was the beginning of the first digital decade.&#8221; Ah yes, &#8220;The Digital Decade.&#8221;<br />
<strong>6:39 p.m.:</strong> Here comes another silly video, this one set to &#8220;Believe in Magic,&#8221; featuring people from all walks of life <em>extraordinarily</em> happy to be using Microsoft products. They look like they&#8217;re all on Ecstasy. And it&#8217;s probably safe to say that nobody has ever looked like that while using a Microsoft product.<br />
<strong>6:35 p.m.:</strong> Shapiro says Gates has given 10 CES keynotes, eight consecutively. He&#8217;s spoken at CES 11 times. Guess he must be the Guinness World Record holder. How &#8217;bout that, huh?<br />
<strong>6:33 p.m.:</strong> And here comes Gates. Wait&#8211;that&#8217;s not Gates. It&#8217;s Consumer Electronics Association President Gary Shapiro. OH RAPTURE! Disappointed applause. &#8220;In my opinion these are the best four days of the year,&#8221; says Shapiro.  (Tell that to Steve Jobs next week.)<br />
<strong>6:30 p.m.:</strong> Silly CES promo video&#8230; Correction: advertisement.<br />
<strong>6:29 p.m.:</strong> Getting started right on time. Guess Jim Allchin and the Vista development team didn&#8217;t do Gates&#8217;s makeup this time around. Lights dim&#8230;.<br />
<strong>6:25 p.m.:</strong> In a few moments, Bill Gates, the Frank Sinatra of the Dat(a) Pack (Steve Jobs presumably in the Dean Martin role), will deliver his 11th Consumer Electronics Show keynote&#8211;and by many projections his last.<br />
<strong>6:00 p.m.:</strong> The ballroom of the Venetian Resort Hotel Casino is pretty much packed, and like most things in Las Vegas it&#8217;s BIG. But it has to be the worst pre-keynote music EVER: from 1982 video game soundtrack to passed-out-after-the-rave techno to European disco to new wave. Really covering all the genres. At this rate, Bill Gates could take the stage to the theme from “The Dukes of Hazzard” or the “Annie” soundtrack.</p>

After all, the company has <a href="http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/politics/2004001159_spying08.html">a fair bit of experience</a> with just <a href="http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2006/06/21/att_nsa/index_np.html">this sort of thing,</a> having <a href="http://svextra.com/blogs/gmsv/2006/05/att_your_world_.html">aided and abetted the National Security Agency</a> in its warrantless domestic-surveillance efforts.</p>
<p>Anyway, together with NBC and Disney, AT&#038;T has invested a combined $10 million in Vobile, a company whose VideoDNA is <a href="http://bits.blogs.nytimes.com/2007/09/21/one-anti-piracy-system-to-rule-them-all/index.html?hp">rumored to be the gold standard of video content recognition systems</a> and is considering deploying it at the network level.</p>
<p>The mechanics of the initiative haven&#8217;t all been sorted out, but sources tell BusinessWeek that one scenario involves <a href="http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/21690078/">traffic on AT&#038;T&#8217;s network being routed through racks of Vobile servers that would scan it for NBC Universal and Disney content</a>. And perhaps child pornography as well, you know, just to make the idea of network-level monitoring a bit more palatable to the masses.</p>
<p>Such a strategy, if AT&#038;T were to pursue it, would make the company the first major Internet carrier to implement a network solution to copyright enforcement. And it would beg a number of questions: <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20070613/att-network-level-filtering/">Will AT&#038;T police the Internet traffic of its customers alone? Or will it police traffic over all its backbones and peering points (IE: traffic from other ISPs)?</a> The answers could be troubling.</p>
<p>Suffice to say privacy advocates who&#8217;ve been railing against AT&#038;T over the NSA debacle and issues of Net neutrality aren&#8217;t exactly thrilled with the company&#8217;s latest move.  &#8220;They better be very careful,&#8221; warned Lee Tien, a staff attorney with the Electronic Frontier Foundation. &#8220;This is serious, serious stuff, to basically invade the privacy of all of your subscribers.&#8221;</p>
