Dude, You Posted Your Earnings Three Minutes Early

dellguy1-150x150Dell’s profit fell 23 percent in its second quarter. Its sales fell 22 percent. But the company still beat Wall Street expectations, and that’s what counts these days. Dell shares spiked nearly seven percent when the news was released, oddly, three minutes before the close of trading Thursday.

Dell Dullephone Sighted in China

dellephoneNo wonder cellular carriers rejected Dell’s first smartphone offering for its “lack of differentiation.” Unveiled in China this morning, Dell’s “proof of concept” handset looks like the chimerical offspring of Apple’s iPhone and the Palm Pre, but lacks some of their more powerful features.

Laptop Punters

lauren-2Microsoft COO Kevin Turner must be so disappointed. Remarking on the company’s “PC Hunter” ad campaign last week, Turner said he’d been ebullient when attorneys for Apple called to complain. But now the company has quietly modified the ad in question to address Apple’s complaints.

Unlike Demand for Dell Stock, Demand for Dell Products Has Stabilized

dellguy1Things are starting to look up for Dell–well, as much as they can for a company so beaten into submission by the econalypse. The company said Monday that demand for its products appears to have stabilized and that it expects to report “a slight sequential revenue increase” for its second fiscal quarter, which ends July 31.

An Hour and 14 Minutes on Apple.com? Wow. Try Spending That on Dell’s Web Site Without Falling Asleep.

applecomHere’s an interesting metric: Apple’s Web site last month drew more than 55.7 million unique visitors, more than the site of any other computer hardware manufacturer, according to a report released this week by Nielsen Online. The number of visitors was more than double that of Hewlett-Packard, which drew 21.9 million people, and triple Dell’s, which drew 16.8 million.

Dell: Who You Gonna Buy?

dellguy1-150x150Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi has a few ideas about what Dell should do with the nearly $11 billion in cash reserves it’s sitting on and they don’t include buying Palm. Sacconaghi believes that Dell isn’t interested in a “transformational” acquisition, though its interest in the handset market might suggest otherwise. Rather, the company is mulling the acquisition of small- to medium-sized enterprise-related companies.

Mr. Rubinstein? Michael Dell on Line 1, Sir. Shall I Put Him Through to Voicemail?

palm_logo_dell_styleIs Dell positioning itself to make a large acquisition? It certainly appears that way. The company recently hired mergers-and-acquisitions specialist David Johnson away from IBM. And yesterday, it sold off $1 billion in bonds. Dell already has $9.7 billion in cash reserves on hand, so presumably it needs that extra billion for something beyond the “general corporate purposes” it claims.

Dude, Your Phone Is Dull

Antipathy toward a Dell smartphone is building and the device hasn’t even exited the rumor stage yet. When last we discussed the Dellephone, wireless network operators had reportedly been unimpressed, criticizing it as dull compared with current and upcoming handsets. Now comes further criticism from Bernstein Research analyst Toni Sacconaghi Jr., who believes that Dell will announce a smartphone in the next six months but will most likely bungle it.
