			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/sony-150x150.jpg" alt="sony" title="sony" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-29096" />Reporting disappointing second-quarter earnings a few weeks back, Sony warned that the Christmas shopping period would likely be a weak one. &#8220;We are quite cautious in foreseeing end-of-year sales,&#8221; <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091030/another-stinker-from-sony/">Sony CFO Nobuyuki Oneda said at the time</a>. &#8220;In the first quarter and second quarter there was an upside in sales, but the critical moment is the Christmas season and we are not too optimistic.&#8221;</p>
<p>With the consumer electronic industry still languishing, Sony (SNE) has little reason to be optimistic. In an <a href="http://translate.google.com/translate?js=y&amp;prev=_t&amp;hl=en&amp;ie=UTF-8&amp;u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.ilsole24ore.com%2Fart%2FSoleOnLine4%2FEconomia%2520e%2520Lavoro%2F2009%2F11%2Fsony-strategie-anti-crisi-intervista-stringer.shtml%3Fuuid%3De78547e2-d1fc-11de-8fa6-8227e7d190ff%26DocRulesView%3DLibero%26fromSearch&amp;sl=it&amp;tl=en&amp;history_state0=">interview with Italian business daily Il Sole 24 Ore</a>, CEO Howard Stringer said he’s seen little sign of a recovery in Sony’s business. &#8220;From my viewpoint, that of Sony and its consumer electronics products the picture for the time being has not improved very much,&#8221; <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/rbssConsumerGoodsAndRetailNews/idUSB25035820091115">Stringer said</a>. &#8220;There hasn’t been that turning point that many had hoped for. We are waiting for a signal that hasn’t arrived.&#8221;</p>

<p>Well, this is a first, I think: Google is promoting a consumer electronics device on its <a href="http://www.google.com/">front page</a>. Surf over to Google.com right now and you&#8217;ll find this pitch plugging Droid, Motorola&#8217;s (MOT) new Android smart phone: &#8220;The Droid is on sale now. Learn more.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/goog_droid.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/goog_droid_small.jpg" alt="goog_droid_small" title="goog_droid_small" width="350" height="190" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-28419" /></a></p>
<p>The text is simple and at just 42 characters, it jibes well with Google&#8217;s (GOOG) minimalist design ethic. Click on that &#8220;learn more&#8221; link and you&#8217;re taken to a <a href="http://www.google.com/mobile/partners/verizon/search.html">mobile partners page that touts Droid&#8217;s Google-enabled search prowess</a>. Only then are you presented with a big &#8220;Get the Verizon Droid Now&#8221; button that takes you to Verizon Wireless (VZ), where you can purchase the device.</p>
<p>So is it an ad? Google will almost certainly argue that it is not. But clearly, it commercializes the page. Droid is a consumer product sold by another company and Google is branding it on its most prominent page. Wonder how much that spot is worth.</p>
<p>Furthermore, it&#8217;s interesting to see Google leveraging search&#8211;a product in which it enjoys a de facto monopoly&#8211;to promote a second product that isn’t yet dominant (Android). More so, given this remark from CEO Eric Schmidt, made just yesterday:</p>
<blockquote><p>&#8220;Hopefully, we won’t repeat the mistakes that Microsoft made 10 years ago that ultimately led to all these things that happened to them.&#8221;</p></blockquote>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Google for comment and will update this post if and when I receive a reply.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong> Here&#8217;s Google&#8217;s comment on the Droid promotion via company spokesperson Gabriel Stricker:</p>
<blockquote class="memo"><p>We are currently running a homepage promotion for Droid. From time to time we include a link on the Google home page that points users to exciting and important information, whether it be relief opportunities in the wake of a tsunami or hurricane, awareness about an important cause, or information about a new product. The Droid is a hardware collaboration that we&#8217;ve been very active and involved with, so it makes sense that Google has an interest in getting the word out.</p></blockquote>
<p><strong>UPDATE</strong> Turns out this is not the first Google has promoted a handset on its homepage.<a href="http://googlesystem.blogspot.com/2008/10/g1-promoted-on-googles-homepage.html"> Last October it plugged another Android device there</a>, <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en_us/mobile/android/hpp.html">the T-Mobile G1</a>.</p>

Because according to the results of Piper Jaffray’s 18th biannual Teen Survey, Apple devices continue to do well with American teenagers. (See table below; click to enlarge.)</p>
<p>Consider these metrics:</p>
<p>Of the teens Piper Jaffray surveyed,</p>
<ul>
<li>15 percent own iPhones (up from eight percent six months ago)</li>
<li>22 percent plan to buy an iPhone in the next six months</li>
<li>87  percent own iPods (up from 86 percent six months ago) </li>
<li>93 percent of the 40 percent who legally purchase music online use iTunes</li>
</ul>
<p>Music to Apple’s (AAPL) ears, right? &#8220;Apple&#8217;s dominance in the CE and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked, capped by market saturation for iPod and iTunes usage,&#8221; Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster writes in his analysis. </p>
<p>&#8220;Also, interest in the iPhone remains high&#8230;We believe the $99 iPhone 3G has been a meaningful part of share gains in the last six months. Previously, teens were indicating that the plan pricing and handset pricing were too high for them (and their parents) to buy iPhones. The lower pricing appears to have been a catalyst for share gains. Also, the popularity of the App Store and the quality of games available for the iPhone have likely led to the gains among the teen demographic in recent months.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster’s conclusion: &#8220;Apple is taking its leading position in music and mobile markets.&#8221;<br />

<p>Woolworths Supermarkets describes <a href="http://www.ausfoodnews.com.au/2009/01/12/woolworths-begins-rebranding-process.html">its new logo as &#8220;an abstract leaf symbol&#8221; intended to represent fresh food</a>. But to Apple, the stylized &#8220;W&#8221; looks far too much like its own namesake fruit, which could be problematic should the supermarket chain someday decide to peddle its own brand of consumer electronics. And so Apple is petitioning IP Australia, the local agency that governs trademarks, to <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/09/10/04/apple_challenges_new_woolworths_logo.html">reject the Woolworths application for the mark</a>.</p>
<p>It seems an overly litigious move, even for Apple (AAPL). As Hans Hulsbosch, the Woolworths logo designer dryly notes, <a href="http://www.brisbanetimes.com.au/technology/biz-tech/apple-claims-woolies-is-getting-fresh-with-new-logo-20091004-ghxe.html">&#8220;Based on this logic, they would have to take action against every fruitseller.&#8221;</a> </p>
<p>That said, the Woolworths application is for a blanket trademark on a broad range of goods, including electronics, specifically &#8220;apparatus for recording, transmission or reproduction of sound or images&#8230;calculating machines, data processing equipment and computers&#8230;computer devices and computer peripheral devices&#8230;[and] computer hardware and software.&#8221;</p>
<p>While it might seem unlikely that the supermarket chain would ever manufacture devices, it did recently begin dabbling in cellphones, so it’s not entirely out of the question. Said a Woolworths spokesman: &#8220;While we can’t rule [computers, musical players, or other devices] out, we haven’t got any plans at the moment.&#8221;</p>
<p>This isn’t the first time Apple has challenged a trademark. Last year <a href="http://www.wired.com/techbiz/it/news/2008/04/apple_vs_apple">the company went after New York City&#8217;s GreeNYC campaign</a> claiming its logo would create confusion in the marketplace. And in 2007, Apple <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080310/beatles-itunes/">settled a long-running trademark dispute with The Beatles&#8217; parent company, Apple Corps</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/08/iphonezilla.jpg" alt="iphonezilla" title="iphonezilla" width="200" height="300" class="alignright size-full wp-image-23218" />Wise is the investor holding shares in Apple, Research in Motion and/or Palm, because these companies are the triumvirate of tech’s new world order. </p>
<p>This according to RBC Capital Markets analyst Mike Abramsky, who in a research note today says all three are positioned for leadership in the “huge, nascent and underpenetrated” smartphone market. The smartphone, says Abramsky, is a uniquely transformational innovation in that it represents the convergence of four iconic technology markets&#8211;PC and computing, Internet, consumer electronics and wireless phones. </p>
<p>As interest in mobile email, mobile browsing and mobile applications grows, as handsets become more powerful and the networks on which they run improve, consumers will begin to bypassing PCs and the tethered Internet for the iPhone, the BlackBerry, the Pre and the mobile computing experience they offer. And that transition will create an enormous market opportunity for smartphone vendors like Apple (AAPL), RIM (RIMM) and Palm (PALM). </p>
<p>&#8220;Because of their convergence capabilities,&#8221; writes Abramsky, &#8220;we believe that smartphones possess the ability to capture users, revenues, market share and profits from not only the 1 billion unit+ per year handset market&#8211;but also from the PC market (300 million units per year), TVs (200 million units per year), personal media players (230 million units per year), digital cameras (125 million units per year), personal gaming devices (37 million units per year), portable navigation devices (32 million units per year) and other formerly discrete market segments.&#8221;</p>
<p>Bolstering his case, Abramsky adds, &#8220;At the end of calendar 2008, only 2.5% of the ~7 billion people in the world had smartphones and 24% had Internet access (only 8% are Internet subscribers, the difference being multi-user households and Internet cafes). A huge market opportunity for smartphones exists, given that globally there are 3.7 billion mobile phone subscribers, 2.5 billion consumer electronics users, 1.6 billion Internet users, and 1.1 billion PC users.&#8221; (Click on chart below to enlarge.)</p>

<p>Great news for Apple, RIM and Palm, which Abramsky sees as the market’s emerging leaders. And, as I noted earlier, great news for investor holding their shares. Says Abramsky: &#8220;We are raising our price targets on RIM from $100 to $150, on Apple from $190 to $250, and on Palm from $18 to $25, justified by increased market shares which, as visibility improves to the huge smartphone opportunity, offer upside to financials and potential multiple expansion.&#8221;</p>

<p>Sources tell The Wall Street Journal that the MID uses an ARM-based chip, runs Google’s (GOOG) Android operating system and has been in development since last year. It does not have cellphone capabilities. The device could arrive at market before the end of the year, distributed via cellular providers, though a person familiar with the company’s plans tells The Journal it might be delayed or even scrapped entirely.</p>
<p>For Dell (DELL), whose track record in adjacent electronics businesses is littered with the corpses of devices like the Ditty and Axim, venturing into the MID market might be a tad risky. To succeed the company would have to overcome its lack of software development experience and wireless technology <b>and</b> develop an appealing device. No easy task for a company whose recent smartphone design was <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090323/dellephone-more-like-dullephone/">rejected as too dull by wireless network operators</a>.</p>

The souring economy and related uncertainty in consumer and enterprise technology markets continue to drag the chip sector into the mud. While <a href="http://www.sia-online.org/cs/papers_publications/press_release_detail?pressrelease.id=1587">world-wide sales of semiconductors in March</a> rose 3.3 percent from February, they were down nearly 30 percent from last year, the Semiconductor Industry Association said in a report today.</p>
<p>Another ugly SIA metric in <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/tag/semiconductor-industry-association/">a parade of them</a>, though optimists will say that slight uptick in March is a sign that the industry has finally found a bottom from which to scramble upward. &#8220;The modest sequential rebound in worldwide sales in March suggests that demand has stabilized somewhat, albeit at substantially lower levels than last year,&#8221; SIA President George Scalise said in the report. &#8220;While all major product sectors showed month-on-month growth, there continues to be limited visibility in end markets. There are some bright spots such as ‘smart phones’ and ‘netbook’ PCs, but there are no clear signs of early firming of demand in other major end markets such as automotive, corporate information technology, and consumer electronics.”</p>
<p>So, perhaps we’re not on our way to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090102/chips-dip/">the depths plumbed back in 2001-2002</a>. And perhaps we are. The SIA doesn’t quite seem to know.</p>

With its shelves nearly empty after weeks of liquidation sales, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090116/circuit-city-takes-a-dirt-nap/">the bankrupt consumer electronics chain</a> will <a href="http://www.businesswire.com/portal/site/home/permalink/?ndmViewId=news_view&amp;newsId=20090305006323&amp;newsLang=en">shutter its remaining stores on March 8</a>. That&#8217;s a bit earlier than originally planned. <a href="http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2009/03/05/business/NA-US-Circuit-City-Bankruptcy.php">Said a representative for the Great American Group</a>, which has been overseeing the chain&#8217;s going-out-of-business sales: &#8220;Consumers reacted to the top-quality product that they had, and the prices we were able to sell it at, and we&#8217;re basically running out of inventory a week early.&#8221;</p>
<p>Pity that in the end, the only things able to draw crowds to Circuit City were its liquidation sales. </p>

And 22 percent of those who don&#8217;t, hope to buy one in the next six months. This according to Piper Jaffray’s 16th bi-annual Teen MP3 Player and Online Music Survey (click on chart below), which found that Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) cachet among teen consumers is as solid as it ever was, economic collapse be damned. &#8220;Apple&#8217;s dominance in the consumer electronics and online music markets is going seemingly unchecked,&#8221; <a href="http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/08/10/07/apple_pulling_away_from_competition_in_teenage_mindshare.html">Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a note explaining the survey</a>. &#8220;We believe that the teen demographic is a critical component of long-term growth in the digital music and mobile markets.&#8221;</p>
