Bay Area iPhone users, relief is on the way. AT&T has almost completed a $65 million upgrade to its network in the region. The carrier has upgraded close to 850 cell sites in an effort to better handle the massive surge in data traffic it has seen in and around San Francisco since the debut of iPhone. And make no mistake: The surge has been massive.
Cisco strongly believed that its first bid for videoconferencing equipment manufacturer Tandberg was a very good price for the company’s shareholders. The company really didn’t want to sweeten it. But Cisco did so anyway.
Got a set-top box fetish and a few billion dollars to blow on it? Then boy, does Motorola have a deal for you. “People familiar with the matter” tell The Wall Street Journal that the company is seeking a buyer for its home and networks mobility division, which makes set-top boxes and other kit for the cable and telecom industry.
It’s going to be a rough couple of months for the wireless industry. As expected, the Federal Communications Commission on Thursday approved a broad inquiry into the wireless market. In a unanimous vote, the agency’s five commissioners–three Democrats and two Republicans–approved two so-called notices of inquiry, one that will examine competition and innovation and another that will evaluate truth-in-billing practices.
Motorola’s first-quarter results came in stronger than expected, although that’s not saying much because the situation at the ailing wireless handset maker appears to be increasingly dire. Motorola shipped about 19.2 million handsets in its fourth quarter. In its latest quarter, the company shipped just 14.7 million handsets, down 23 percent from the previous one.
Five years in prison, a $250,000 fine and a three-year term of supervised release. That’s the maximum sentence facing the Tennessee college student who was indicted today on charges that he broke into Gov. Sarah Palin’s private email account last month.
