Tech Job Cuts Upgraded to “Appalling” from “Gruesome”

rescuesocietyThe first three months of 2009 were brutal ones for the high-tech industry–from a job loss perspective, the worst in seven years. Challenger, Gray & Christmas on Monday said high-tech companies sacked some 84,217 employees in the first quarter, a 27 percent increase over the previous quarter and the steepest reduction the firm has seen since the Great Dark Time of 2002.

Report: Employees Facing Layoffs More Likely to Talk About Layoffs

In a down economy–one in which Challenger, Gray and Christmas expects some 180,000 tech sector jobs to be lost–career and workplace chatter is more likely to include the word “layoff” than not. That’s the word from Glassdoor.com, a site that collects insider reports on the salaries, work conditions and workplace attitudes of employees at companies around the country.

Tech Sector to Release 180,000 Workers Into Wild: The Challenger Release in Its Entirety

Stupefying.

The year-end total for tech sector job losses in 2008 is expected to reach 180,000, according to Challenger, Gray & Christmas. That’s the largest annual job loss for the sector since 2003, when tech firms sacked some 228,325 employees.
