Some 2,000 Verizon Wireless stores opened early this morning, many to lines&#8211;though admittedly, the lines are far shorter than those that accompanied the launch of certain rival devices. </p>
<p>According to News.com, <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10392128-266.html">100 people or so lined up outside Verizon’s midtown Manhattan store last night prior to its midnight opening</a>. And <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=droid+line">various reports posted to Twitter</a> suggest there were queues at other outlets as well, though quite a bit shorter (see below; click to enlarge).</p>
<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/droid.jpg" rel="lightbox"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/droid-250x200.jpg" alt="droid" title="droid" width="250" height="200" class="aligncenter size-medium wp-image-28350" /></a></p>
<p>In any event, the fact that there are lines at all must be a welcome sight for Verizon (VZ), which has been looking for a strong rival to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone, and for Motorola (MOT), which hopes Droid will revive its much-diminished post-Razr cellphone business. As one Verizon subscriber eager to trade up to Droid told me, &#8220;it’s the best smart phone not made by Apple.&#8221;</p>
<p>With endorsements like this, Motorola should be working a bit harder on branding the device as its own. Right now, the Droid marketing push from Verizon Wireless is so overwhelming that you&#8217;d think CEO Lowell McAdam designed it himself. Why aren&#8217;t we hearing from Motorola as well?</p>
<p>&#8220;Droid is potentially a game changer for Motorola,&#8221; iSuppli analyst Tina Teng said in a recent research note. “Motorola now is no longer just emphasizing slick form factors, such as it did with its RAZR handset. The company now has focused on the hottest segment of the global mobile handset market&#8211;providing compelling smartphone products that are usable and expandable through third-party applications.”</p>
<p>That being the case, Motorola might want to do a bit more to get its name out there.</p>

But they’ll begin to improve after that. Down 11.6 percent this year at $219.7 million, global chip sales will rebound 10.2 percent next year to peak at $242.1 billion, according to the Semiconductor Industry Association. Better yet, they’ll hit  $262.3 billion in 2011.   </p>
<p>Welcome news, considering that back in June, SIA was calling for chip sales to fall 21 percent.  </p>
<p>&#8220;The new forecast is brighter than our earlier projections, reflecting an improving global economy,&#8221; <a href="http://www.sia-online.org/cs/papers_publications/press_release_detail?pressrelease.id=1670">SIA President George Scalise said in a statement</a>. &#8220;Unit sales of key demand drivers&#8211;including PCs and cell phones, which together account for about 60% of semiconductor demand&#8211;have been stronger than previously predicted. We remain cautiously optimistic for the longer term. The current forecast is closely tied to projections of continuing improvement in the worldwide economy.&#8221;</p>

<p>Analysts mulling over <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091022/nokia-sues-apple/">Nokia’s IP infringment suit against Apple</a> seem to be of two minds about how the action will play out. There are those, like Neil Mawston at Strategy Analytics and Ben Wood at CCS Insight, who warn that Apple (AAPL) is on dangerous ground here at best. It’s almost impossible to build a cellphone without using Nokia’s (NOK) intellectual property, they claim. And if that’s the case with the iPhone, then <a href="http://www.reuters.com/article/ousivMolt/idUSTRE59L3QU20091023">Apple could end up paying Nokia hundreds of millions of dollars in licensing fees</a> if Cupertino ends up on the losing side of this suit. <p>Some analysts, like Maynard Um of UBS, see Nokia’s action as a preemptory move against a possible infringement suit from Apple aimed at Nokia’s own multitouch handsets.</p>
<p>&#8220;We believe Nokia&#8217;s suit could be a pre-emptive move ahead of its new handsets launching soon that may have multi-touch capabilities for which Apple has IP,&#8221; Um wrote in a note to clients this morning. &#8220;We would not be surprised if Apple eventually files an infringement suit if Nokia&#8217;s handsets are deemed to infringe its IP and we believe Nokia would prefer any court action to be combined as prior cases have been. We expect the legal process to be drawn out &#038; could involve US Patent Office reviews.&#8221;</p>
<p>The endgame here? Most likely an out-of-court settlement and cross-licensing agreements&#8211;assuming Apple’s willing. After all, Nokia is on record admitting its fondness for Apple’s technology.</p>
<p>Asked once about the striking similarities between a touchscreen device it was designing and Apple’s iconic handset, Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia&#8217;s head of multimedia devices replied, &#8220;If there is something good in the world then we copy with pride.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/nokia_Apple.jpg" alt="nokia_Apple" title="nokia_Apple" width="350" height="250" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-27271" />If you can’t beat ’em, sue ’em. That seems to be the thinking at Nokia.</p>
<p>Today, the Finnish cellphone giant, which has been struggling to develop a worthy competitor to the iPhone, <a href="http://www.nokia.com/press/press-releases/showpressrelease?newsid=1349562">filed suit against Apple</a>, claiming the popular smart phone infringes upon a number of Nokia patents. </p>
<p>Specifically at issue here: 10 patents covering various wireless data, speech coding, security and encryption technologies. Nokia claims that every iPhone model shipped since 2007 has violated them. </p>
<p>&#8220;The basic principle in the mobile industry is that those companies who contribute in technology development to establish standards create intellectual property, which others then need to compensate for,&#8221; said Ilkka Rahnasto, vice president of legal &#038; intellectual property at Nokia (NOK). &#8220;Apple is also expected to follow this principle. By refusing to agree appropriate terms for Nokia&#8217;s intellectual property, Apple is attempting to get a free ride on the back of Nokia&#8217;s innovation.&#8221;</p>
<p>To that point, Nokia says it has entered into license agreements with about 40 companies for these patents. Only Apple (AAPL) has refused. The obvious endgame here, then, is to force the iPhone maker to change its mind. </p>
<p>&#8220;We believe that Nokia is not seeking an injunction; rather, we believe that the company has been in talks with Apple concerning a patent royalty payment for over a year,&#8221; Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster said in a bulletin to clients. &#8220;With today&#8217;s announcement, it appears that the companies have not come to a resolution and Nokia is attempting to hasten the process. Nokia is likely looking to obtain a patent royalty of 1-2 percent ($6 to $12) on every iPhone sold in compensation for its IPs concerning GSM, 3G and WiFi technologies on mobile devices.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting that news of the suit comes just days after <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091019/apple-beats-street/">Apple announced its most successful financial quarter ever</a> at a time when <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091015/nokia-earns/">Nokia is posting nasty losses</a>.</p>
<p>I’ve asked Apple for comment and will update here if I’m offered one.</p>

No reason was given for his departure, though his presence on both the Google (GOOG) and Apple (AAPL) boards, and the Federal Trade Commission inquiry into possible implications of such dual memberships, surely played a role. </p>
<p>This past July, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090803/google-ceo-resigns-from-apples-board-of-directors/">Google CEO Eric Schmidt left Apple’s board</a> presumably for <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090505/time-to-give-up-that-apple-board-seat-eric/">the same reason</a>. The cozy relationship between the companies, which increasingly compete in the cellphone and operating systems markets, had led the FTC to question whether close ties between their boards of directors violate antitrust laws. With Schmidt gone from Apple’s board room and Levinson gone from Google’s, it would seem there’s no longer reason for the FTC to do so.</p>
<p>&#8220;Art has been a key part of Google&#8217;s success these past five years, offering unvarnished advice and vital counsel on every big issue and opportunity Google has faced,&#8221; <a href="http://www.google.com/intl/en/press/pressrel/ir_20091012.html">Schmidt said in a statement</a>. &#8220;Though he leaves as a member of our Board, Art will always have a special place at Google.&#8221; </p>
<p>Though not nearly as special as his place at Apple, where his remaining board seat and true allegiances clearly lie.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong>Levinson&#8217;s resignation from Apple&#8217;s board appears to have appeased the FTC. “Google, Apple, and Mr. Levinson should be commended for recognizing that overlapping board members between competing companies raise serious antitrust issues and for their willingness to resolve our concerns without the need for litigation,” FTC chairman Jon Leibowitz said in a statement. “Beyond this matter, we will continue to monitor companies that share board members and take enforcement actions where appropriate.”</p>

<p>&#8220;The commission has endorsed the local sale of the iPhone and the launch of its service within the limits of the law,&#8221; said  Lee Tae-hee, a spokesman of the Korea Communications Commission. &#8220;If Apple includes location based-related details as a form of an agreement to its strategic partners such as KT, Apple&#8217;s iPhone can give location-related services here.&#8221; </p>
<p>Great news for Apple (AAPL). The South Korean market is a robust one, and analysts say that with the right carrier partner, Cupertino could be looking at sales over the first year ranging from 500,000 to two million. That said, they note that competing with the likes of Samsung and LG on their home turf won’t be easy. Between them, they control about 70 percent of the South Korean handset market. </p>
<p>&#8220;There seem to be a lot of people waiting for iPhones to go on sale here but it will not be easy for Apple to crack the Korean market as Samsung and LG already dominate the market with competitive phones,&#8221; said Jae Lee, analyst at Daiwa Securities in Seoul. &#8220;It will be difficult for Apple to steal market share significantly from the Korean makers in the short term but the iPhone could still be a threat to Samsung and LG in the long term.&#8221;</p>
<p>When the iPhone finally does arrive at market in South Korea, it will likely be with KT (formerly known as Korea Telecom) as a carrier partner. <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=6853">As Dan Butterfield over at iPhonAsia notes</a>, KT CFO Yeon-hak Kim suggested as much this past summer. &#8220;Apple iPhone will be in our smartphone line-up,&#8221; he said in August. “iPhone will help to expand the smartphone market and will contribute to increasing the ARPU (average revenue per user).&#8221; </p>
<p>KT officials are telling the Korea Times that they’re looking at a November launch date. &#8220;KT has been in talks with Apple to introduce iPhones,&#8221; <a href="http://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/biz/2009/09/123_52348.html">said a KT official</a>. &#8220;Sometime in November, the latest iPhone model dubbed as &#8216;iPhone 3GS&#8217; and its previous model will be commercialized. KT and Apple will decide on the coverage of location-based services.&#8221;</p>

Asked by Reuters if he’d ever consider a partnership with Apple (AAPL), Netflix CEO Reed Hastings said he would, but only after the company  had secured its foothold on videogame consoles and elsewhere. </p>
<p>&#8220;[A partnership with Apple] is something that’s likely to come over time,&#8221; <a href="http://blogs.reuters.com/mediafile/2009/09/21/netflix-ceo-reed-hastings-on-xbox-youtube-etc/">Hastings said</a>. &#8220;But nothing in the short term. [With] movie watching, we are not focused on mobile yet, but on the TV, on Blu-ray and on the video game consoles. We will get to mobile eventually, including the iPhone.&#8221;</p>
<p>Of course, bringing a Netflix (NFLX) streaming-video app to the iPhone will no doubt take some doing&#8211;and a few concessions. Certainly, it seems unlikely that AT&#038;T (T) would be thrilled to have Netflix streaming movies over its wireless cellphone network. So at the very least, the company would have to agree make its app Wi-Fi-only.</p>

Shares in the company spiked more than seven percent after the CLIQ announcement Thursday, and today they’re up well over six percent at $8.49. </p>
<p>Clearly, there’s quite a bit of enthusiasm around the device and its Motoblur feature, which connects a variety of social networking services to the phone&#8217;s core functions. </p>
<p>Said Mark Sue, an analyst at RBC Capital: &#8220;Our initial take is favorable, and it seems that Motorola is carving out a niche in the crowded smartphone market by focusing on socially minded demographics as opposed to enterprise users or pro-sumers. We think it’s a step in the right direction.&#8221;</p>
<p> C.L. King analyst Lawrence Harris was similarly impressed. &#8220;Our initial impression of the CLIQ is that it is not an iPhone killer, but that it will be a contender,&#8221; he said in a research note issued today. &#8220;&#8230;Initial reviews suggest that the CLIQ’s build quality is excellent with a solid keyboard, two important selling points.&#8221;</p>
<p>And Tavis McCourt at Morgan Keegan said the CLIQ is a credible device&#8211;assuming Motorola (MOT) can sell enough of them. &#8220;MOTOBLUR clearly differentiates a Motorola Android-based smartphone from others on the market and provides Motorola a fighting chance at successfully turning around Mobile Devices with Android-based devices,&#8221; he noted today. </p>
<p>“The CLIQ appears to be a solid touch screen smartphone,&#8221; McCourt added, &#8220;but we will defer from offering a more confident opinion until we get a chance to test one and note that we expect the upcoming Motorola Android-based device for Verizon Wireless may be somewhat more impressive. We believe Motorola ultimately needs to sell about 2 million smartphones/quarter in order to become sustainably profitable in its Mobile Devices business.&#8221;</p>
<p>McCourt&#8217;s conclusion: &#8220;Given Motorola&#8217;s global distribution, this does not require a &#8216;home run&#8217; product, but only a series of &#8216;solid&#8217; products. The CLIQ appears to be a good first step in this turnaround.&#8221;</p>

<p>Kara spent <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090831/kara-visits-guitar-hero-hq-for-a-sneak-peek-of-gh5-band-hero-and-dj-hero/">Monday morning</a> at Activision Blizzard (ATVI), where they are pushing forward with the entire Guitar Hero line, even as the game industry faces a nearly 50 percent decline in U.S. sales this year. Kara got to play hero to several of the forthcoming releases, including previewing the much anticipated <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/a-sneak-peek-of-guitar-hero-5-band-hero-dj-hero/EE932085-F34B-414B-A63D-C1195B5DEB28">DJ Hero console</a>. </p>
<p>The youth movement continued with the <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090903/fancy-bar-graphs-of-the-week-zero-surprise-the-youngs-love-new-media-more-than-the-olds/">fancy bar graph</a> from Forrester Research’s annual &#8220;State of Consumers and Technology,&#8221; which drove home an important fact of life for media outlets. All the money being spent on new media expansion is a fight for the young; older consumers are sticking to more reliable fare. </p>
<p>BoomTown wasn’t just about the kids though, as 23andMe co-founder <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090904/23andme-co-founder-linda-avey-leaves-start-up-to-focus-on-alzheimers-research/">Linda Avey announced her exit</a> from the gene-juicing business to focus on a foundation related to Alzheimer’s research. Avey co-founded 23andMe with Anne Wojcicki in 2006 with early money from Genentech (DNA), Google (GOOG) and New Enterprise Associates, as well as Wojcicki’s husband, Google co-founder Sergey Brin. </p>
<p>While BoomTown was keepin&#8217; it real with the kids, Digital Daily was abuzz with a spate of iPhone news. John started Monday off on the topic of the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090831/its-official-apple-announces-sept-9-event/">Sept. 9 iPod event</a> with confirmation that music, indeed, will be center stage. In the Apple world, that means iPods and iTunes, though <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/want-to-play-with-the-beatles-but-dont-want-to-pay-for-rock-band-try-jamlegend-soon/">Beatles fans</a> are keeping their fingers crossed. </p>
<p>Readers got a compare-and-contrast of Apple’s (AAPL) foreign and domestic policy when John covered a potential <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090901/apple-in-iphone-talks-with-second-chinese-carrier/">two-carrier system in China</a> and the long-awaited stateside <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090903/att-iphone-mms-on-sept-25/">activation of MMS</a> features in the iPhone OS3. Meaning that while China may get the iPhone carrier flexibility so far absent in the U.S. market, American consumers are just about to get a new feature that’s been standard on every smartphone for a year or more. </p>
<p>MediaMemo covered a fluid week in the world of media giants and Top Chefs. Disney (DIS) went off to the mines and instead of seven dwarfs, found <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/spidey-meet-mickey-disney-buying-marvel-for-4-billion/">Marvel</a> and the rights to its 5,000-character portfolio. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090831/live-disney-marvel-call/">Disney CEO Bob Iger</a> didn’t think $4 billion was too much to pay to bring Iron Man and friends to the happiest media empire on earth and is sure the company will benefit from such &#8220;rich intellectual property.&#8221;</p>
<p>If the Disney vault got 5,000 new friends this week, <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090901/sold-finally-ebay-ditches-65-of-skype-for-19-billion/">eBay said goodbye</a> to one long-time partner. Peter reported that the long, difficult breakup between eBay and Skype was finalized when eBay sold a 65 percent stake in the VOIP juggernaut to the internationally mixed bag of Silver Lake, Index ventures, <a href="http://kara.allthingsd.com/20090705/new-vc-marc-andreessen-speaks-about-the-dark-side-and-more/">Andreessen Horowitz</a> and a Canadian pension fund.  </p>
<p>Peter rounded out the week of motion with lots of changes in Google’s ranks. The search giant shuffled the chairs with <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090902/google-still-shuffling-sales-force-self-serve-exec-david-fischer-steps-aside/">David Fischer moving</a> out of the self-serve ad business with no sign yet of a replacement. <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090904/google-swaps-out-china-bosses/">Google China</a> saw the big chair turn upside-down when Kai-Fu Lee announced that he’d leave the company this month to begin his own venture. Lee will be replaced by the tag team of Boon-Lock Yeo and John Liu, who will oversee engineering and business, respectively. </p>
<p>Not all Google’s shifts were outbound though. &#8220;Charlie’s Café&#8221; at the main campus got its <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090903/googles-top-chef-leaves-las-vegas/">Top Chef </a>back after Preeti Mistry failed to make the cut on the Las Vegas iteration of the popular TV show. Regular fans of the show <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090821/googles-top-chef-tripped-up-by-shellfish/">weren’t surprised by her dismissal</a>, but at least Google can put one in the plus column this week. </p>
<p>Over at The Mossberg Solution, Katie took aim at a possible answer to a question plaguing all image-conscious technophiles: <a href="http://solution.allthingsd.com/20090901/bluetooth-headsets-that-up-the-chic-factor/">Yea or nay to the omnipresent Bluetooth earpiece</a>. Plantronics (PLT) and Aliph, maker of the Jawbone, both say yea and are upping the ante on the recently reviled symbol of cellphone userdom. Katie reviewed the fashion-forward <a href="http://video.allthingsd.com/video/mossberg-solutionboehret-tests-two-phone-headsets/8AD52747-E975-4890-8B2D-306A3D2B590A">Discovery 975 and Jawbone Prime</a>, each designed to separate its users from $130. In exchange, they&#8217;ll get redesigned outsides and some new features that might even put one back in Brad Pitt’s ear. </p>

It recently surpassed four million downloads and is poised for a bit of a growth spurt now that more applications have begun to appear on its virtual shelves. Indeed, in the last week, the number of applications available for the Pre increased by 40 percent to 58. </p>
<p>Now, that’s still a trifling number when compared to the 50,000 or so available in Apple’s (AAPL) iTunes App Store, but it’s something, and it shows that Palm (PALM) is managing to convince iPhone-addled developers that writing WebOS applications will be lucrative business. </p>
<p>Among the latest and most promising of those new apps,  DirecTV’s (DTV) NFL Sunday Ticket. Though the app&#8211;which allows users to watch NFL games on their cellphones&#8211;is available for the iPhone as well as for the Pre, it may offer a better experience on the latter, as Pali Research analyst Walter Piecyk notes in a research alert this morning.</p>
<p>&#8220;We will be interested to see how this application performs on Sprint’s (S) network compared to how it will perform on the iPhone on AT&#038;T’s (T) network,&#8221; Piecyk writes. &#8220;Sprint is more likely to allow a less compressed stream and therefore higher quality video on its network as we have seen with Sprint’s implementation of YouTube, which is much higher quality than viewing YouTube clips on the iPhone over the AT&#038;T network. When the iPhone is forced to WiFi, the quality of the YouTube clips improves to the level we experience on the Palm Pre but that kind of defeats the purpose of the mobile internet.&#8221;</p>
<p>An interesting point and <em>an interesting potential selling point for Palm and Sprint</em>&#8211;especially given <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/technology/companies/03att.html">the beating AT&#038;T’s network has been taking in the media lately</a>.</p>

But that’s assuming its distribution deal with China Unicom is exclusive. And according to Apple, it’s not. &#8220;I can confirm it is not an exclusive deal,&#8221; <a href="http://money.cnn.com/news/newsfeeds/articles/djf500/200908310510DOWJONESDJONLINE000066_FORTUNE5.htm">an Apple spokesperson told Dow Jones</a>. </p>
<p>Apple (AAPL) declined to say what other carriers the company might be talking to, but it’s a safe bet that if the company is in discussions with a second carrier, it’s China Mobile. After all, the two companies have talked about a deal before, and while those negotiations stumbled repeatedly over issues like revenue-sharing and hardware localization, it’s hard to believe that Apple would turn its back on the world’s largest wireless carrier. </p>
<p>There are 600 million cellphone users in China and 415 million of them are China Mobile subscribers. That’s a hell of an opportunity to pass up, no matter how difficult negotiating with the company might be. </p>
<p>According to China Mobile CEO Wang Jianzhou, Apple hasn’t passed it up. During the company’s quarterly earnings call on Aug. 20, <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/BT-CO-20090820-703911.html">Jianzhou said specifically that talks between the two companies continue</a>. Just what they might involve is anyone’s guess, although Dan Butterfield at iPhonAsia speculates that they would likely be for an EDGE 2G-only version of iPhone. </p>
<p>&#8220;No matter the future of TD-SCDMA, China Mobile will maintain their EDGE 2G network, which has broad coverage and a clear signal throughout major urban zones in China,&#8221; <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=6171">Butterfield writes</a>. &#8220;In my view, EDGE 2G could be the bridge between Apple and China Mobile. There are hundreds of millions of low-salaried wireless consumers in China who aspire to iPhone. Many have in fact already purchased cheap Shanzhai (iClone) knock-offs. But Shanzhai iPhones are not reliable and quickly become landfill. A low-priced &#8216;real&#8217; Apple iPhone running EDGE 2G only, might sell by the tens of millions.&#8221;</p>

So reports in the Yomiuri Shimbun and The Wall Street Journal that claim the three have decided to <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601101&amp;sid=adh10Yltq0kg">consolidate their mobile-phone operations</a> aren’t wide of the mark at all. Such a move would eliminate overlap in product lines. And it would create a company second only to domestic industry leader Sharp, one that would have enough clout to expand into emerging markets like China. </p>
<p>But NEC, Hitachi and Casio are denying these reports anyway. Or rather, they’re denying that they’ve hammered out any sort of deal. &#8220;The media report out today is not something that the company has released,&#8221; NEC said in a statement. &#8220;It is also not true that we have made a decision regarding our cell phone operations.&#8221;</p>
<p>Yet.</p>

<p>&#8220;&#8230;the PC and the mobile will continue to come closer and merge,&#8221; <a href="http://economictimes.indiatimes.com/Infotech/Nokia-plans-foray-into-netbook-segment/articleshow/4911799.cms">Nokia CEO Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo said at a press conference in New Dehli</a>. &#8220;A lot of opportunity can be seen in this converged area. We at Nokia is actively looking at this converged market&#8230;.We are looking at the netbook market to see what kind of opportunity is there.&#8221;</p>
<p>Likely a decent one for a cellphone maker like Nokia looking to diversify a bit from its core business. The company’s <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080624/symbianese-liberation-army/">Symbian smartphone platform</a> could likely be optimized for the task were Nokia to bring some of its $6 billion R&#038;D budget to bear on it. The OS already has a Microsoft-compatible office suite in MobiSystems OfficeSuite 4, so Nokia&#8217;s ahead of the game there. Question is: Might the company’s efforts be better directed toward developing a credible competitor to Apple&#8217;s (AAPL) iPhone?</p>

Unless Bert Nordberg can turn it around. </p>
<p>This morning the struggling handset maker <a href="http://www.sonyericsson.com/cws/corporate/press/pressreleases/pressreleasedetails/dkbnannouncement2009-20090817">tapped Nordberg, executive vice president of Ericsson, as its new president and CEO</a>. He’ll replace Dick Komiyama, who has apparently decided to retire, though he is smack dab in the middle of implementing the restructuring program that was intended to reinvigorate Sony Ericsson.  </p>
<p>&#8220;The Sony Ericsson transformation program I began over a year ago is more than half way completed, and I am pleased with what we have achieved so far,&#8221; Komiyama said in a statement. &#8220;I believe it is the right time for me to begin transferring the leadership of the company to a person who is able to complete the transformation program and lead Sony Ericsson through its next phase of development.&#8221;</p>
<p>The right time, indeed. Over the past few years, Sony Ericsson has been overtaken in the high-end handset market by Research in Motion (RIMM), Apple (AAPL) and Samsung and beaten into submission in the low-end market by Nokia (NOK). Among the top five cellphone vendors, Sony Ericsson saw the steepest drop in sales from the first quarter, <a href="http://seekingalpha.com/article/153005-sony-corporation-f1q09-qtr-end-6-30-09-earnings-call-transcript?page=-1">down 40 percent year-over-year</a>, and continued losses at the joint venture have prompted some to speculate that it could be broken up. </p>
<p>That’s clearly not the case at the moment, though it could be if Nordberg doesn’t manage to speed up that transformation program. Said Nordberg: &#8220;Sony Ericsson has taken leadership in the music phones and the camera phones with the Cybershot and the Walkman, but there are some weaknesses in the smartphone segment and we need to restore that.&#8221;</p>
