Verizon’s merciless razzing of AT&T has finally elicited a reaction from Apple. Presumably peeved at seeing its marquee product banished to the “Island of Misfit Toys” in one of Big Red’s new holiday ads, Apple is launching a pair of new iPhone ads that tout the smartphone and the network on which it runs.

Scheduled to run tonight during programs like “House,” “The Daily Show” and “Dancing With the Stars,” the Apple (AAPL) ads tout the iPhone’s ability to handle data and voice simultaneously, something Verizon’s (VZ) CDMA network does not permit. “Say you’re on a call with a client and he asks, ‘did you see my email?’ You can say, ‘yep got it right here,’ all without ever leaving the call,” the ad explains. “Can your phone and your network do that?”

<param name="flashvars" value="videoGUID=C0A3D523-1B1C-4FAB-A600-E0EE0D2CFFD3&playerid=4001&plyMediaEnabled=1&configURL=http://wsj.vo.llnwd.net/o28/players/&autoStart=false" base="http://s.wsj.net/media/swf/"name="microflashPlayer">
[ See post to watch video ]

Interesting to see Apple’s commercial messaging for the iPhone, which has to date focused on hardware and software, suddenly extended to include the features of the AT&T (T) network on which it runs. Apple, for its part, tells me the ads were done without any involvement from AT&T, and that may well be the case. But coming as they do after Verizon’s “There’s a Map for That” parody and a handful of other AT&T-bashing ads in which the iPhone is an unwilling participant, it’s hard not to view the new commercials as Apple coming to the defense of its exclusive carrier partner.

The Palm Pre may have been the most successful handset rollout in Sprint’s history, but it hasn’t stopped the carrier from hemorrhaging customers in the months following its launch.

The Palm Pre may have been the most successful handset rollout in Sprint’s history, but it hasn’t stopped the carrier from hemorrhaging customers in the months following its launch.

In its second quarter–the first with the Pre in its lineup–Sprint (S) lost 991,000 postpaid subscribers. And in its third, reported yesterday, its lost 801,000. So subscriber loss, while unquestionably gruesome, is diminishing.

How much of this is due to Palm’s (PALM) Pre? Not that much, says CL King & Associates analyst Lawrence Harris, who believes the Pre had only a moderate impact on Sprint’s postpaid subscriber base.

“Within postpaid, the number of CDMA-only subscriber losses was about 100,000 in the September quarter, compared to the 200,000 in the June quarter,” Harris wrote in a research note to clients. “At Sprint, the Palm Pre is a CDMA-only postpaid device. The number of Sprint postpaid subscribers upgrading their handsets was slightly higher in the September quarter than in the June quarter at just over 2.0 million.”

According to Harris, “This number provides some indication of the available market for all high-end devices at Sprint. In Palm’s August quarter, 85% of the company’s sales went to Sprint. Given the absence of growth in Sprint’s CDMA postpaid category, it appears likely that most of the Palm Pre sales went to existing Sprint subscribers as opposed to winning customers from other carriers.”

That would seem to be the case. Sprint rivals AT&T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) each added subscribers during the second quarter–1.4 million and 1.1 million, respectively. So if the Pre did anything for Sprint, it helped to stem CDMA postpaid losses a bit.

And that’s something, right? After all, there’s no panacea for Sprint’s affliction–well, perhaps there is, but it’s locked up in an exclusivity agreement with AT&T (T). Still, when Sprint last reported earnings, CEO Dan Hesse said the carrier expected to sign up more new customers as the Pre gained wider distribution through retail outlets like Best Buy (BBY) and RadioShack. And that doesn’t really seemed to have happened. Perhaps next quarter after Sprint launches the Pre’s not-quite-cheaper sibling, the Pixi.

UPDATE: A quick addendum. In a research note this morning, Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett notes that while Sprint has reduced subscriber losses a bit, the cost of doing so has been worrisomely high.

“Yes, net subscriber losses were better,” Moffet explains. “But the cost was very high. Post-paid equipment subsidies soared to $139 per subsidized subscriber in Q3 (up 39 percent from last year), as the company recovered just 36 percent of their equipment costs….Yesterday’s results illustrate why it may not be possible for Sprint to have its cake and eat it too. After all the drastic cost cutting, after all the efforts to refresh the product line, after all the price cuts and new pricing plans, Sprint was able to manage only a modest improvement. Not growth, just a slightly slower rate of decline. And that Herculean effort almost broke the bank. The huge costs of even marginally improving gross additions (and the rate of net subscriber loss) crushed margins.”

Analysts who follow Palm (PALM) are already rolling their eyes over TheStreet.com’s claim that Verizon (VZ) has balked at adding the company’s new Pre handset to its lineup. In a research note this morning, Deutsche Bank’s Jonathan Goldberg dismissed it as “off base.”

“We believe the press reports late Thursday afternoon that Verizon would not launch the Palm Pre are incorrect,” Goldberg wrote. “Our checks continue to point to healthy carrier demand for the Pre early in calendar 2010. We believe Palm has placed orders with the supply chain for another version of the Pre with features highly consistent with a Verizon launch.”

Over at Morgan Keegan & Co, Tavis McCourt was equally dubious. “Palm reiterated its FY2010 guidance, which we believe REQUIRES a launch at Verizon (you just can’t get there with just Sprint and AT&T),” he wrote. “Verizon has carried just about every Palm product in its history, and the Pre is clearly the best. We do not have insight as to the marketing support Palm will get from Verizon, but we see little risk in not getting a placement at this carrier. The timing of the rumor post-deal makes it equally as dubious as the timing of the ‘Nokia will buy Palm’ rumor during the roadshow.”

McCourt, it’s worth noting, believes the Pre will come to Verizon Wireless early next year. “Feb. holds the potential to be a strong Pre quarter as shipments to Sprint likely stabilize and distribution expands to Verizon Wireless (our assumption),” he explains. “Palm’s success at Sprint has typically been a good barometer for shipment trends at VZW and, with a postpaid sub base that’s roughly 3x as large as Sprint’s CDMA business, the market opportunity at VZW is much larger. However, Pre trends at Sprint were aided by the device’s near term exclusivity and a large base of existing Palm users upgrading their devices, both factors that VZW lacks.”

UPDATE: Jim Gerace, executive director of media relations at Verizon, tells E-Commerce Times that the company will offer the smartphone in January as planned.

UPDATED: Sources are telling Boy Genius that TheStreet.com’s report is bogus as well.

Well, this is odd.

Nortel Networks has rejected Research In Motion’s bid for the wireless infrastructure assets Nortel is unloading as part of bankruptcy proceedings. RIM said Monday night that it intended to offer $1.1 billion for Nortel’s CDMA and LTE businesses, but was told it could do so only if it agreed not to bid on other Nortel assets, something it had intended to do.

In a blistering statement, RIM (RIMM) accused Nortel (NT) of imposing unfair conditions on the court-supervised auction of its assets and of jeopardizing their continued Canadian ownership.

“RIM is extremely disappointed that Nortel’s world leading technology, the development of which has been funded in part by Canadian taxpayers, seems destined to leave Canada,” said co-CEO Jim Balsillie. “RIM remains extremely interested in acquiring Nortel assets through a Canadian ownership solution that would serve the dual purpose of keeping key wireless technologies in Canada and extending RIM’s leadership in the research, development and distribution of leading edge wireless solutions, but RIM has found itself blocked at every turn.”

Why? Nortel says RIM was late to the game and hasn’t followed proper auction procedure.

“Other parties moved expeditiously to comply with the court approved procedures to become a qualified bidder,” the company said in a statement. “It was not until July 15, 2009, that RIM submitted a letter to Nortel asking to be a qualified bidder and since that time, Nortel has diligently attempted to work with RIM on acceptable confidentiality terms relating to Nortel’s valuable intellectual property assets, but RIM refused to comply with the court approved procedures.”

What’s really going on here? It’s hard to say, though clearly there’s more to the story. After all, RIM’s $1.1 billion bid is far, far more than Nokia Siemens’s stalking horse bid of $650 million. And what does RIM want with the CDMA business, anyway?

Sprint has found a novel way to improve its network operations: Turn them over to Ericsson. On Thursday, the wireless carrier announced a long-rumored plan to outsource its network to Ericsson. The seven-year, $5 billion deal will see Ericsson servicing, provisioning and maintaining Sprint’s CDMA, iDEN, and wireline networks. Under its terms, Ericsson (ERIC) will take on 6,000 Sprint (S) employees as part of the arrangement. Sprint will retain ownership of its cell towers and control over its network strategy and investment decisions.

For Sprint, which is suffering from declining revenue and a thinning subscriber base, the move is a quick-and-dirty way of cutting costs and freeing up resources to focus on innovation and remedying the real and perceived issues with its services.

“This is about improving our customer experience,” Steve Elfman, head of Sprint’s network operations, said during a conference call this morning. “While we get the benefit of Ericsson’s expertise…we can focus our attention on bringing great devices, great services, great applications to them….We’ll benefit from the current scale and efficiency and expertise of Ericsson, and this will keep improving over time.”

Little wonder, then, that analysts are raising their target prices on the company’s stock.

Among those doing so today: Morgan Stanley’s Kathryn Huberty, who lifted hers to $180 from $105, arguing that iPhone demand through 2010 is being underestimated by the market and will help drive Apple’s stock value up. “We believe Apple is emerging as the clear leader in the battle over the mobile Internet,” Huberty wrote in a research note to clients, adding that some future pricing adjustments will only solidify that position. “We expect a price cut to the current generation iPhone to drive 50 percent to 100 percent (two million to four million units) incremental unit demand,” she said. “Our survey data suggests 15 percent plus of the iPhone installed base typically upgrade to a new phone.”

A bullish call, especially for Huberty, whose opinion of Apple has historically been mercurial at best. Shares of Apple (AAPL) rose five percent to $128.60 in early trading this morning.

Tempering Huberty’s exuberant pronouncements today is Global Equities Research analyst Trip Chowdhry, who tells Reuters that the iPhone will suffer a bit at the hands of the Palm (PALM) Pre, which is scheduled to arrive at market on June 6. “Investors should not think the upcoming version of iPhone 3 is going to be as successful as iPhone 2.0 because it will have solid competition from Palm Pre, developed by ex-Apple designer Jon Rubinstein,” Chowdhry said. “Palm Pre has a superior operating system than iPhone. It runs on a better network–Sprint CDMA-versus iPhone which runs on GSM.”

It was like the Golden State Warriors opting to pass on Larry Bird in the ’78 draft. Verizon Wireless was offered the chance to be the exclusive carrier of Apple’s iPhone in 2005, but refused it, put off by Cupertino’s “rich financial terms” and other demands. Apple (APPL) had reportedly asked for a rich percentage of the monthly services fees as well as complete control of iPhone distribution. “They would have been stepping in between us and our customers to the point where we would have almost had to take a back seat…on hardware and service support,” Jim Gerace, a Verizon Wireless vice president, explained to USA Today in 2007. “We said no. We have nothing bad to say about the Apple iPhone. We just couldn’t reach a deal that was mutually beneficial.”

Four years and 13.7 million iPhones later, Verizon (VZ) is reportedly reconsidering that assessment.

USA Today says the company has been talking to Apple about becoming an iPhone carrier when AT&T’s exclusivity deal ends next year. Sounds reasonable. Verizon would certainly love to offer the iPhone, which has done great things for AT&T (T), and Apple would surely love the chance to peddle the device to Verizon’s 80 million customers. Problem is, a deal like the one described by USA Today would require Apple to develop a new iPhone based on the CDMA and/or LTE (Long Term Evolution) standards. The first is the standard Verizon currently supports, the second is the one it will begin supporting widely by 2010–a standard that theoretically offers data rates of 100 Mbps downstream an 50 Mbps upstream.

Now, Apple is obviously already planning for LTE, which will be adopted by AT&T as well–though perhaps more slowly than by Verizon. So it makes sense that Apple might look at Verizon as an alternative to AT&T. But–if I understand things correctly–even when Verizon rolls out LTE for data, its network will still rely on CDMA for voice. So were the iPhone to be offered by Verizon, Apple would have to develop a new version of the device that would support both the next-generation standard (LTE) and the legacy standard (CDMA). That’s something Apple has been openly loath to do. Consider this exchange between Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster and Apple COO Tim Cook during the company’s earnings call last week:

Gene Munster: Hi good afternoon. Congratulations. I’ve got a question on the iPod. Our survey board suggest the exclusive relationship with the AT&T is the number one reason why people don’t purchase an iPhone and given the revenue shares no longer exist, can you walk us through some of your thinking in terms of why maintain an exclusive with AT&T. Just a follow-up question regarding any update on Steve Jobs? Thanks.

Tim Cook: On AT&T, Gene, we view AT&T as a very good partner. We believe that they’re the best wireless provider in the US and we are very happy to be doing business with them. They have done a very good job with iPhone, they’ve put the full force and weight of their company behind it, it’s a major strategic thrust for them and so we’re very happy with the relationship that we have and do not have a plan to change it.

GM: Is there a structural reason why you need to maintain with AT&T from a technology perspective?

Tim Cook: Well from a technology point of view as you know, Verizon is on CDMA and we’ve shown from the beginning of the iPhone to focus on one phone for the whole of the world and when you do that, you really go down the GSM root, because CDMA is–doesn’t really have a life to it after a point in time.

Cook’s reply to Munster’s question certainly doesn’t preclude an Apple/Verizon iPhone deal but it doesn’t exactly suggest one’s in the offing either. Which means that what’s likely going on here is simple gamesmanship. AT&T’s iPhone exclusivity deal is about to expire and the company is desperate to extend it. Apple is looking for better terms. And entertaining a deal with Verizon would certainly be a good way to get them and perhaps force AT&T to upgrade its network more quickly in the process.

The Apple rumor mill has such a hair trigger, that even passing mention of an unreleased product can set it into yammering motion. As happened today after Digg founder Kevin Rose offered up some purported insider information about the focus of Apple’s “Let’s Rock” media event in San Francisco next Tuesday. If Rose is correct–and his record on handicapping Apple (AAPL) announcements is decidedly mixed–Apple will announce updates to its entire iPod line, including the rumored “tall” iPod Nano. Not exactly a tough call considering that XSKN is already selling cases for them and purported photos of the device — like the one below — are showing up on Alibaba.

More interestingly though, Rose says that Apple will uncrate iTunes 8, the first major overhaul of the software since iTunes 7 launched two years ago. Rose claims that iTunes 8 will boast some significant enhancements, among them HD-quality TV show downloads, a new “grid view” browsing feature and a playlist recommendation engine called Genius. “iTunes 8 includes Genius, which makes playlists from songs in your library that go great together,” Rose writes. “Genius also includes Genius sidebar, which recommends music from the iTunes Store that you don’t already have.”

Notably absent from Rose’s list of new features: iTunes Unlimited–the $129-a-year all-you-can-eat subscription service that Apple has been rumored to be considering for some time now.

Like all such reports, Rose’s should be taken with a grain of salt, if not an entire salt lick. Rose was, after all, the guy who erroneously claimed Apple’s first iPhone would feature a slide-out keyboard, dual batteries and CDMA, and GSM support.

To some, Sprint’s longstanding reputation for lousy customer service, poor network coverage, high churn and Keystone Kops-style management disorganization might be a bit–how can I put this delicately–off-putting. The beleaguered company’s subscriber numbers are dropping like failed calls, as are its shares. Sprint’s stock price has fallen nearly 60% over the past 12 months. It posted a $29.6 billion loss for 2007 and has had its debt rating cut to junk by Standard & Poor’s.

Not the most attractive of acquisition targets. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder, in this case T-Mobile parent Deutsche Telekom (DT) which is reportedly considering a bid for the wireless outfit, whose worsening losses have left it ripe for a buyout. By swallowing Sprint (S), DT could gain some spectrum in the States and stave off a price war between the mobile carriers, or so the “thinking” goes.

Thing is, an acquisition of Sprint entails an acquisition of Sprint’s problems–and there are many. It would also require DT, which operates a GSM/EDGE network, to manage Sprint’s 3G CDMA network and Nextel’s legacy iDEN system. That’s three different network standards. And then there’s Sprint’s WiMax operation, XHOM, to deal with. That’s the makings of a real Greek tragedy of a business story right there. Said Avian Securities analyst Matthew Thornton, “While the differing network technology standard does not necessarily eliminate the possibility of a deal, it does significantly raise the costs and complexity of the combination.”

Michael Nelson, an analyst at Stanford Group, agreed. “You really cannot underestimate the level of complexity that that entails,” he told Bloomberg. “There is a significant amount of integration risk.”

If Digg founder Kevin Rose is right, Apple’s next generation iPhone will include not one, but two cameras–the second a front-mounted video camera designed for iChat AV.

During a recent episode of his weekly Diggnation vidcast (see above), Rose claimed that the new iPhone reportedly being prepped by Apple (AAPL) for a summer release will enable video conferencing over AT&T’s (T) high-speed 3G wireless network.

Like most such predictions, Rose’s should be taken with a grain or two of salt. His last iPhone premonition, which had the device featuring slide-out keyboards, dual batteries and CDMA and GSM support, was laughably inaccurate. That said, he did accurately predict the debut of iPod nano ahead of its 2005 debut. So there may be something to his latest claim. Certainly, it sounds plausible.
