Verizon, though it refuses to divulge sales numbers for Motorola’s (MOT) new Droid handset, says it has been “very pleased” with demand for the device so far. And no wonder: According to Mark McKechnie of Broadpoint AmTech, Verizon (VZ) is on track to sell 600,000 Droids during the fourth quarter of 2009.

“Most stores we contacted reported strong follow-through sales last week and have received ‘re-stocks’ following the initial launch,” says McKechnie. “We had guesstimated ~ 200k Verizon-only ‘sell in’ prior to the launch. We now expect at least another 200k by Black Friday and 150-200k through the remainder of the holiday season, which gets us to our 600k forecast for the quarter. All stores appear ‘well stocked’ with none reporting shortages….Our checks with stores indicate no issues with returns of the Droid.”

Evidently, Verizon’s Droid saturation campaign, with a budget estimated at $100 million, is paying off–despite its impersonal sci-fi positioning.

If AT&T took offense at Verizon’s “There’s a Map for That” ad campaign, wait until the carrier gets a load of its rival’s newest ad spots. Unfazed by AT&T’s litigious reply to its first effort, Verizon (VZ) rolled out a trio of new anti-AT&T ads over the weekend and they are brutal in their criticism of the carrier’s 3G network coverage.

All of the new commercials are Christmas-themed and all feature Apple’s (AAPL) iPhone, though they are careful to leave it unscathed by Verizon’s criticism of AT&T (T). The standout among the three, this re-creation of the “Island of Misfit Toys” scene from the 1964 Rankin/Bass stop-motion animated Christmas television special, “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer.” Note that the conceit of the ad is that iPhone has been banished to the Island of Misfit Toys not because of its quality but because of of AT&T’s 3G network.

A pretty brilliant escalation of Verizon’s marketing battle with AT&T and one that suggests through its deference to the iPhone that there may be more to these Verizon iPhone rumors than previously thought.

Below, Verizon’s other two ads.

According to the research house, Palm Pre search activity, which more than doubled in late May thanks to Sprint’s “Now Network” advertising campaign, suffered a significant decline in mid-June, right around the debut of the new iPhone (click on chart below).

“The final two weeks in June saw the [number of weekly searchers on terms relating to the Palm Pre] fall to approximately half the number of the peak week of activity,” comScore noted in a release today. “Interestingly, this decline in Palm Pre search activity coincided with the launch of the Apple iPhone OS 3.0 on June 17 and launch of the iPhone 3GS two days later. Throughout May and the first week of June, the number of unique iPhone searchers remained fairly consistent at approximately one million people per week. In the week prior to the launch of the 3GS, however, the number of iPhone searchers more than doubled to 2.3 million people during the week of the launch.”

ComScore offers no correlating evidence beyond this, and the end of the Sprint campaign obviously played a role in the decline, but this is clearly not a simple coincidence. (Google Trends shows virtually the same thing. Click on chart below.) These are rival devices in a unique market we’re talking about. That said, comScore suggests that the Pre does resonate with an audience different from the one interested in the iPhone.

“Of the people who searched for Palm Pre-related terms during the eight weeks of the study,” comScore notes, “just 11 percent also searched on iPhone-related terms, suggesting that the majority of the people interested in the Pre have little interest in the iPhone.”

You know things are bad at AMD when the company’s schadenfreude over Intel’s European legal woes spills over into its brand messaging. Surf over to AMD’s Web site this morning and you’ll find foremost on its homepage not a message about Fusion, its next-generation microprocessor design, or branding for its various chips, but a gigantic European Union flag flying over this text:

“European Commission finds Intel guilty of breaking antitrust laws, harming consumers.”

Click through and you’ll find an entire subsite celebrating the EC’s finding–a shrine of court documents, press releases and industry quotes. “European Commission Reveals the Truth About Intel,” the page shouts, cataloging AMD’s grievances against the company. And while that’s apparently the case, AMD’s response reveals a bit of truth about AMD. Gloating over a legal victory is one thing, but building a branding campaign around it is another one entirely. Moral superiority is wonderful, but it’s not going to win any battles in the marketplace.

For AMD (AMD) to beat Intel (INTC) at its own game, it must beat Intel at its own game. “Imagine a world where the world’s most important information technology only comes from one place,” AMD President and CEO Dirk Meyer recently told BusinessWeek. “Nobody wants to live in that world.” No, I suppose not. But if we’re going to live in the better one the Meyer is hinting at, AMD has got to build it. Talking about it as your company continues to struggle toward profitability after more than two years of losses, isn’t going to cut it.

In a move that most likely would not have been made without the recent efforts of Ashton Kutcher and Oprah Winfrey, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom announced his candidacy for the California Governor’s seat this morning via Twitter.

This web- and Twitter-savvy move (he uses the word “retweet”!) is the most immediate piece of a digital campaign strategy that also includes a YouTube channel, a Facebook presence, a Flickr account and a Digg profile, all lined up in the footer of every page on his Web site. Visitors are also urged to sign up for an email newsletter.

Campaign 2.0 was ushered into existence by Barack Obama’s brilliant campaign manager, David Plouffe, who really set the gold standard, even though Twitter wasn’t a part of his strategy. The microblogging powerhouse wasn’t at quite the same level of omnipresence a year and a half ago as it is today.

One of Twitter’s most persistent qualities is its malleability, lending it to any number of creative applications users can invent and implement. Of course, Twitter is the tool, not the strategy–next election cycle, there will no doubt be a new shiny new app to play with. But for now, It will be interesting to see if Newsom’s camp does something creative with this one.

The new economy is the Internet Economy. The Internet Economy is reshaping the fortunes of business, countries and people, leveling the playing field for everyone, and driving the most significant economic shift since the Industrial Revolution.”

– Cisco CEO John Chambers, Sept. 24, 1998

When he appeared at our D5 conference in May 2007, Sen. John McCain said that, given the chance, he’d hire Cisco CEO John Chambers for his cabinet. Now, in the run-up to the November presidential election, it looks like Chambers has some competition for that spot. In an interview with Reuters today, McCain said that Chambers–who’s contributed quite a bit to the McCain campaign–is still on his short list of potential Treasury secretaries, but the Cisco (CSCO) CEO has some company. “I think it would be someone that Americans would recognize that would inspire trust and confidence,” McCain said. “There’s people like John Chambers, there’s people like [former eBay (EBAY) CEO] Meg Whitman, there’s people like Warren Buffett.”

Apparently, current Secretary Henry Paulson doesn’t quite cut it anymore. Anyway … it’s curious that McCain would include Buffett among his choices for Treasury secretary since his appointment would almost certainly outrage tax-cutting fiscal conservatives to near-aneurysm. Indeed, it already has. Said Grover Norquist, president of Americans for Tax Reform, “Warren Buffett is a goddamned Democrat and he doesn’t understand that a 28 percent capital gains tax would be a bad thing. He might be a good bridge partner, but he’s awful on policy.”

Incidentally, Barack Obama’s list of potential Treasury secretaries includes no Silicon Valley CEOs, current or otherwise. According to people close to his campaign, it includes New York Federal Reserve Bank President Tim Geithner, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and former deputy Treasury secretary Roger Altman.

What a lousy week for the digital GOP.

First, John McCain’s domestic policy adviser conjures up a PR disaster by crediting the senator with the development of the Blackberry–odd, since McCain’s not exactly a digital native. Then former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina says U.S. vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin’s not qualified to run HP. And now, Palin’s Yahoo email account has been hacked and its contents published to Wikileaks. Serves her right for using Yahoo Mail.

What at astonishingly tech-savvy presidential ticket. Keystone Kops on the campaign trail.

The McCain-Palin campaign and Yahoo (YHOO) haven’t yet confirmed the authenticity of the hack or the published emails, but Amy McCorkell, a member of Alaska’s Advisory Board on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse, tells Wired that one of her messages to Palin is among those posted to Wikileaks.

An ugly turn of events for Palin, who’s been criticized recently for using her Yahoo Mail account to conduct official government business. Uglier still if the deletion of Palin’s Yahoo accounts is considered an obstruction of justice.

UPDATE: McCain-Palin 2008 Campaign Manager Rick Davis just issued the following statement on the matter: “This is a shocking invasion of the Governor’s privacy and a violation of law. The matter has been turned over to the appropriate authorities and we hope that anyone in possession of these emails will destroy them. We will have no further comment.”

That response would seem to resolve the authenticity issue. Now whom do we have to bomb to get those emails off the Web?
