			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/pre-band-aid.jpg" alt="pre-band-aid" title="pre-band-aid" width="123" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-27802" />The Palm Pre may have been <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/palm-sprint-tells-us-they-have-never-seen-higher-demand-for-a-smartphone/">the most successful handset rollout in Sprint’s history</a>, but it hasn’t stopped the carrier from hemorrhaging customers in the months following its launch. </p>
<p>In its second quarter&#8211;the first with the Pre in its lineup&#8211;Sprint (S) lost 991,000 postpaid subscribers. And in its third, reported yesterday, its lost 801,000. So subscriber loss, while unquestionably gruesome, is diminishing. </p>
<p>How much of this is due to Palm&#8217;s (PALM) Pre? Not that much, says CL King &#038; Associates analyst Lawrence Harris, who believes the Pre had only a moderate impact on Sprint’s postpaid subscriber base.</p>
<p>&#8220;Within postpaid, the number of CDMA-only subscriber losses was about 100,000 in the September quarter, compared to the 200,000 in the June quarter,&#8221; Harris wrote in a research note to clients. &#8220;At Sprint, the Palm Pre is a CDMA-only postpaid device. The number of Sprint postpaid subscribers upgrading their handsets was slightly higher in the September quarter than in the June quarter at just over 2.0 million.&#8221;</p>
<p>According to Harris, &#8220;This number provides some indication of the available market for all high-end devices at Sprint. In Palm’s August quarter, 85% of the company’s sales went to Sprint. Given the absence of growth in Sprint’s CDMA postpaid category, it appears likely that most of the Palm Pre sales went to existing Sprint subscribers as opposed to winning customers from other carriers.”</p>
<p>That would seem to be the case. Sprint rivals AT&#038;T (T) and Verizon Wireless (VZ) each added subscribers during the second quarter&#8211;1.4 million and 1.1 million, respectively. So if the Pre did anything for Sprint, it helped to stem CDMA postpaid losses a bit. </p>
<p>And that’s something, right? After all, there’s no panacea for Sprint’s affliction&#8211;well, perhaps there is, but it’s locked up in an exclusivity agreement with AT&#038;T (T). Still, when Sprint last reported earnings, CEO Dan Hesse said the carrier expected to sign up more new customers as the Pre gained wider distribution through retail outlets like Best Buy (BBY) and RadioShack. And that doesn’t really seemed to have happened. Perhaps next quarter after Sprint launches <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091026/palm-pixi-launches-nov-15-for-99-after-rebates/">the Pre’s not-quite-cheaper sibling, the Pixi</a>.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> A quick addendum. In a research note this morning, Bernstein Research analyst Craig Moffett notes that while Sprint has reduced subscriber losses a bit, the cost of doing so has been worrisomely high. </p>
<p>&#8220;Yes, net subscriber losses were better,&#8221; Moffet explains. &#8220;But the cost was very high. Post-paid equipment subsidies soared to $139 per subsidized subscriber in Q3 (up 39 percent from last year), as the company recovered just 36 percent of their equipment costs&#8230;.Yesterday&#8217;s results illustrate why it may not be possible for Sprint to have its cake and eat it too. After all the drastic cost cutting, after all the efforts to refresh the product line, after all the price cuts and new pricing plans, Sprint was able to manage only a modest improvement. Not growth, just a slightly slower rate of decline. And that Herculean effort almost broke the bank. The huge costs of even marginally improving gross additions (and the rate of net subscriber loss) crushed margins.&#8221;</p>

This morning it unveiled an expanded online store that will better reflect its new real-world counterpart.</p>
<p>&#8220;On the new online Microsoft Store, we’ve added a bunch of new products, including Windows 7 PCs as well as select 3rd party software and accessories,&#8221; <a href="http://trevinchow.com/blog/2009/10/21/the-new-microsoft-store-launches-with-windows-7/">Trevin Chow, senior lead program manager for Microsoft Store, said in a blog post announcing the move</a>. &#8220;And let’s not forget a ton of gaming products that have been added including a bunch of the top selling Xbox 360 titles.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting. Not exactly sure what the upside is to selling PCs online when you don&#8217;t make them. It&#8217;s not like Microsoft (MSFT) will be offering a better experience than, say, Best Buy (BBY), HP (HPQ) or Dell (DELL). And an online outlet doesn&#8217;t afford the company the same opportunity to cultivate the &#8220;Microsoft Experience&#8221; it&#8217;s clearly going for in its brick-and-mortar outlets. So why bother? </p>
<p>A unified experience online and off, I suppose. And, if the infrastructure is in place to sell through one channel, why not sell through both? Of course, the downside is that if you don&#8217;t execute well, you risk giving customers another lousy experience with which to associate your products.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/steve_boom-150x150.jpg" alt="steve_boom" title="steve_boom" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-26457" />Apple has long been a subscriber to the underpromise-and-over-deliver school of guidance theory, so it’s not unusual to see research houses raising their guidance on Apple in advance of its <a href="http://www.apple.com/quicktime/qtv/earningsq409/">fourth-quarter financials</a>, which the company is set to report on Monday, Oct. 19. Among those doing so today: Morgan Keegan, whose Tavis McCourt says the June refresh of the MacBook Pro line and the recent launch of Snow Leopard have juiced sales a bit&#8211;particularly at Amazon (AMZN) and Best Buy (BBY).</p>
<p>&#8220;Apple continues to execute well across its major product categories,&#8221; McCourt wrote in a note to clients today. &#8220;&#8230;we believe trends are faring better than expected, with a notable increase in Mac demand following the release of Snow Leopard in early September. We believe this reflects the improved value proposition of the MacBook Pro line (updated last June with new price points), which have been performing particularly well on both Amazon and Best Buy&#8217;s top sellers charts, two web sites that we believe provide a decent proxy for sell-through trends in the U.S. consumer PC market.&#8221; (See chart below; click to enlarge.) </p>

Palm sold some 823,000 handsets during that period with sell-through of 810,000 units, so that’s an impressive feat. But only if the sales we’re talking about here were made to on-the-street consumers. And, according to Town Hall research analyst David Eller, it’s not entirely clear that they were. </p>
<p>You see, Palm (PALM) defines units sold as products sold to on-the-street customers <em>or to resellers like Best Buy (BBY) and Amazon.com</em> (AMZN). Which means that Palm can report a unit sold while it’s still sitting at inventory at various retail outlets. In other words, <em>a Pre sold is not necessarily a Pre activated</em>. As Eller notes, that’s problematic. </p>
<p>&#8220;We have been perplexed by a disconnect between PALM’s device units sold and our estimates of store level sell through,&#8221; Eller writes. &#8220;According to PALM’s reported sell through, inventory increased by 13k units and since the &#8216;vast majority&#8217; of both the device units shipped and the device units sold were units of the Pre, there couldn’t be an inventory problem. The gap between the two is only 13k.&#8221; </p>
<p>Continuing, Eller adds a cautionary note: &#8220;However, since the company recognizes revenue on sell in to the channel and the company defines device units sold as units that have been shipped from Sprint (their primary customer) to either customers or second tier distributors, PALM could offer investors a high number of units shipped but still have a glut of inventory in the channel. We believe that channel inventory is currently about 11 weeks, which we believe will pressure reorder rates and make it more difficult to sell high ASP products going forward.&#8221;</p>
<p>An 11-week glut of inventory in the channel? If that’s the case, it’s certainly cause for concern, more so because many investors are evidently unaware that this is even a possibility. &#8220;[Palm’s definition of sold] does not appear to be understood by investors,&#8221; Eller notes. &#8220;We polled several of the investors who attended the Boston road show lunch and each was under the impression that sell through translated into customer activations. How can this be?&#8221;</p>
<p>Good question. Palm and Sprint (S) investors both might want to pay a bit more attention to Sprint’s 10-k in the future.</p>
<p>I&#8217;ve asked Palm for comment and will update this post when it responds.</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> This just in from Palm:</p>
<p>&#8220;The sell-through data we post reflects carriers’ sales to their customers. For example, Sprint customers include consumers who buy in a Sprint store, and Sprint retail partners such as Best Buy and RadioShack. We rely on our wireless carriers to provide us with sell-through data, and we note this fact in our 10Q.&#8221;</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/09/jumbo-iphone1-150x150.jpg" alt="jumbo-iphone1" title="jumbo-iphone1" width="150" height="150" class="alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-24207" />Apple’s iPhone continues to be AT&#038;T’s marquee handset, though <a href="http://www.nytimes.com/glogin?URI=http://www.nytimes.com/2009/09/03/technology/companies/03att.html">the data-guzzling “Hummer of cellphones,” as the New York Times has dubbed it</a>, has inspired widespread customer dissatisfaction with the carrier’s network. Indeed, according to Piper Jaffray, the iPhone 3G and 3GS are AT&#038;T&#8217;s (T) top-selling phones. </p>
<p>&#8220;Based on our channel checks, the iPhone remains the best selling device at AT&#038;T with both the new $200/$300 iPhone 3GS and $100 legacy iPhone selling very well,&#8221; Piper Jaffary analyst Gene Munster said in a research note today. </p>
<p>&#8220;In July, our checks had indicated store managers were strongly recommending the legacy iPhone,&#8221; Munster notes, &#8220;as we believe this was partially driven by store representatives hoping to make the sale with the 3GS stocked out combined with efforts to reduce existing inventory levels of the legacy iPhone. However, in August, our checks indicate store managers are increasingly recommending the 3GS, and we believe this is driven by improved availability of the 3GS at most AT&#038;T stores.&#8221;</p>
<p>Munster summarizes: &#8220;Overall, the iPhone remains the best selling device and our August checks indicate the iPhone took share from BlackBerry, the Nokia E71x, and most other competitor products. Finally, in our checks at Best Buy, store managers indicated the iPhone was their best selling device with stores selling out of stock as soon as they received the Apple smartphones.&#8221;</p>
<p>A bullish assessment, with an even more bullish conclusion: Munster says he expects Apple (AAPL) to ship seven million iPhones in the quarter. If that’s truly the case, Apple should have no trouble beating Wall Street’s expectations for its current quarter despite the gloomy economy.</p>
<p>One last point worth noting here: Munster is not bullish on Apple’s event tomorrow. He describes it as a &#8220;non-event,&#8221; though he seems convinced Steve Jobs will host it. &#8220;We expect Steve Jobs to introduce a new iPod lineup with a new iPod touch, new nanos, and a new classic, with cameras in the new models,&#8221; he notes. &#8220;We expect the stock to trade off on a lack of surprising announcements.&#8221;</p>

If there was, well, there would have been a massive rush on Pres nationwide this past month. And that clearly didn’t happen.</p>
<p>In fact, by all indications, the Pre hasn’t even come close to performing as well at market as McNamee promised. Though it was the <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/palm-sprint-tells-us-they-have-never-seen-higher-demand-for-a-smartphone/">most successful handset launch in Sprint’s history</a>, it didn’t come close to supplanting the Apple (AAPL) iPhone. Hell, it couldn’t even stop <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090729/sprint-fewer-dropped-calls-callers/">Sprint from losing 991,000 subscribers during the second quarter of 2009</a>. </p>
<p>Which is not to say that the Pre and what it’s done for Palm (PALM) aren’t remarkable. Any device capable of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090624/palm-the-turnaround-story-of-the-year/">transforming a $423 million market cap into a $2.9 billion one in 12 months</a> is nothing short of a miracle, as I’ve noted before. Seriously, check out the chart below.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s just that McNamee was, and is, as full of it as a beef ranch manure truck. Because at a run rate of roughly 25,000 per week (according to the latest stats from Pali Research), Pre sales are decent. Nothing more, nothing less. </p>
<p>Consider this: In its first quarter, 8.6 percent of Sprint&#8217;s (S) 35.4 million post-paid subscribers upgraded handsets. In its latest quarter approximately nine percent of the company’s 34.4 million post-paid subs upgraded. So despite all the hoopla over the Pre, just 15,000 to 50,000 more Sprint users upgraded their handsets this quarter than last quarter, a period with no important handset launches. </p>
<p>Given Sprint’s substantial base of Palm handset owners, that’s not exactly impressive. Makes you wonder if <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090727/palm-analysts-best-buy-suffering-from-pre-mature-elaboration/">that &#8220;accidental&#8221; price cut we saw at Best Buy</a> (BBY) earlier this week might become an official one before the end of summer.</p>

In a research note published this morning, CL King analyst Lawrence Harris, speaking to <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090724/pre-analysts/">the controversy over sell-though numbers for the Pre</a>, cast his lot with those who feel sales are slowing. </p>
<p>&#8220;Our channel checks suggest sales of the Pre have indeed slowed. Store traffic at Sprint stores has declined since mid-June,&#8221; Harris wrote. &#8220;The Pre, which initially was not available for online purchase from Sprint’s website, became available last week. We believe a majority of the Pre sales have been made either to existing Palm users or Sprint subscribers. It also appears not to have been as successful as the iPhone in terms of winning subscribers from other carriers.&#8221; </p>
<p>Harris notes that even Sprint (S) CEO Dan Hesse seems uncertain of the device’s true impact in the market. Speaking at Fortune’s Brainstorm: Tech conference in Pasadena, Calif., last week, Hesse said of the Pre: &#8220;You won’t know if we have a real hit on our hands until its been out three months, four months, five months&#8230;.It’s too early to tell&#8230;.We’re just getting it rolled out in decent quantities for direct distribution.&#8221;</p>
<p>An interesting admission. That said, the Pre did set record first-day and weekend sales for Sprint, And according to the channel checks of some other analysts, sales are not slowing. Fact is, we won’t know for sure until Palm (PALM) and Sprint go on record with real sales metrics&#8211;as Sprint may do later this week when it reports earnings.</p>
<p>One last point worth noting here: CL King’s note arrives amid widespread reports this morning of a <a href="http://www.precentral.net/best-buy-selling-pre-99-2-year-contract">Best Buy promotion that cut the Pre’s price to $99</a> with a two-year contract. Though the retailer dismissed the cut as an <a href="http://twitter.com/bernierjohn/status/2862349548">&#8220;unintentional pricing error&#8221;</a> and promptly withdrew it, a number of Pres appear to have been <a href="http://blogs.wsj.com/digits/2009/07/27/confusion-at-best-buy-over-rumors-of-a-99-palm-pre/">sold at that price across the country.</a> </p>
<p>Odd that such an accident would occur nationwide complete with in-store pricing sheets, isn’t it? Makes you wonder if someone jumped the gun on a forthcoming promotion and if we’ll see the Pre at $99 before the end of summer. And if we do, at what price will <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090630/palm-pixie-in-november/">the Eos/Pixie&#8211;the Pre’s rumored little brother</a>&#8211;be sold? $49.99?</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/pre_cracked.jpg"><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/07/pre_cracked-250x250.jpg" alt="pre_cracked" title="pre_cracked" width="250" height="250" class="alignright size-medium wp-image-21743" /></a>With <a href="http://www.google.com/finance/historical?q=NASDAQ:PALM">Palm’s shares</a> up more than 900 percent since January, two things are clear: Palm&#8217;s Pre and webOS operating system are <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090624/pre-makes-palm-a-new-man-in-only-minutes-a-day/">nothing short</a> of a <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090624/palm-the-turnaround-story-of-the-year/">triumph</a> and the run-up in Palm (PALM) shares is most likely a <em>wee</em> bit overdone.</p>
<p>In a research note issued Monday, Jesup and Lamont analyst Kevin Dede says as much, arguing that the company’s shares are overvalued, particularly in light of Pre returns. </p>
<p>&#8220;We stood just as the Street now stands, completely enamored with Palm’s highly innovative new device; however, our checks now lead us to believe that while initial sales could almost be categorized as &#8216;gangbusters&#8217; and perhaps above initial assumptions, we think there are engineering complications that are driving a higher level of returned devices than otherwise expected.</p>
<p>&#8220;From a hardware perspective,&#8221; Dede continues, &#8220;the Pre includes the features expected in a cutting-edge smartphone, including a large touch screen, one of the most powerful processors designed for a handset, and a slide-out keyboard; we understand that a great many returns are on account of an unsatisfactory experience with the keyboard operation and dead pixels in the screen. Fixing these issues shouldn&#8217;t pose a problem, but we think the timing risk and severity should be reflected in the shares.”</p>
<p>Dede notes that his impromptu survey of local retail outlets&#8211;Sprint (S), Best Buy (BBY) and Radio Shack&#8211;revealed that about one in three devices is being returned. He cites, as well, <a href="http://forums.precentral.net/palm-pre/188002-how-many-times-have-you-exchanged-your-pres.html">a survey on Pre Central</a> that suggests roughly 40 percent of initial Pre sales are exchanged.</p>
<p>Now, to be fair, this is anecdotal evidence at best. The Pre Central survey, which at present has only 615 respondents, is hardly statistically relevant. That said, Pre Central is a top Pre fan site, and <a href="http://forums.palm.com/palm/board/message?board.id=weboshardware&amp;thread.id=145&amp;view=by_date_ascending&amp;page=1">Palm’s own forum has quite a few complaints</a>, as does <a href="http://www.sprintusers.com/forum/showthread.php?s=7b243a4692859ea621501f5e3edf372b&amp;t=188829">SprintUsers</a>. So clearly, <a href="http://forums.precentral.net/hardware-use-trouble-shooting/187117-my-cracked-screen.html">something’s going on here</a>.  </p>
<p>Reached for comment on the issue, Palm had this to say: “We think the Palm Pre is the best product we’ve ever shipped. While we haven’t seen anything out of the ordinary we will continue to closely monitor both Palm and Sprint customer service channels.&#8221;</p>
<p>Despite concerns about <a href="http://www.precentral.net/psb-pre-screen-cracks-emerge">the Pre’s build quality</a> and Dede’s contention that the company’s stock is overvalued, the analyst sees good things ahead for Palm. &#8220;In light of the overwhelming evidence supporting continued growth of converged devices, we believe Palm addresses the most enchanting segment of the mobile device market and should experience at least market growth over the longer term.</p>
<p> “Shorter term is obviously more interesting, and we believe Palm’s technology positions it to gain share at the expense of those companies offering less attractive, less functional devices,&#8221; Dede adds, concluding, &#8220;The competitive technology race boils down to ease of use across an increasingly complex technical environment.”</p>
<p><strong>UPDATE:</strong> Concerned that its survey has been taken out of context, <a href="http://www.precentral.net/analyst-claims-palm-pre-return-rates-are-high-were-not-so-sure">Pre Central is running another poll on Pre build quality</a>, this one on its blog, rather than its forums. And while it&#8217;s no more statistically relevant than the original, it&#8217;s worth noting. Because with more than twice the number of respondents, it shows just 18 percent of initial Pre sales being exchanged.</p>

<p>Palm (PALM) seems to have satiated pent-up early demand for its new Pre smartphone, constrained supplies be damned. In a pair of investor notes issued today, analysts at Pali Research and JP Morgan say that sales of the Pre have tapered off to a point where supply and demand are roughly in parity. </p>
<p>“We have concluded our 3rd round of channel checks for the Pre,” writes JP Morgan analyst Paul Coster, who notes that demand for the handset is hovering at about 40,000 per week. “The gap between supply and demand has closed at Sprint and BestBuy stores, waitlists are eliminated or down, and most stores now have Pre devices in stock.”</p>
<p>Pali Research analyst Walter Piecyk also surveyed the Pre landscape and reached a similar conclusion, though he sees the slowing of sales as a bit more pronounced. “We believe that Palm Pre sales have slowed over the past week for Sprint to under 40,000 from 50,000-60,000 last week,” he writes. “&#8230;We suspect that if sales continue to moderate, Sprint would increase its marketing budget for the product. The marketing budget behind the product has been somewhat limited to date compared to the marketing push that Apple does.”</p>
<p>Indeed. And let’s not forget that Apple (AAPL) has <a href="http://allthingsd.com/topics/apple/iphone-3gs/">a new handset on the market</a> that’s been <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090622/apple-more-than-1-million-iphone-3gs-models-sold/">selling quite well</a>. Makes you wonder if  this ebb in demand for the Pre is somehow related.</p>
<p>Guess it&#8217;s looking like Palm investor Roger McNamee’s hyperbolic predictions about iPhone-to-Pre conversion aren&#8217;t going to quite pan out.</p>

RadioShack inventory has been replenished once (back to launch-date levels or higher), whereas Best Buy has not received additional units (based on very limited sample). Our channel checks included 28 Sprint stores across the nation, 3 Radio Shack stores, and 3 Best Buys&#8230;.Though we came away with a generally favorable impression of the sell-in momentum that Palm is currently experiencing, we also detected a lot of uncertainty. Sprint stores are being dripfed devices without much certainty or uniformity regarding timing and quantity. A Best Buy associate expressed hope that devices would be delivered by Friday but sounded doubtful.”</p>
<p>Interesting. Certainly puts Palm’s claim that <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090608/palm-sprint-tells-us-they-have-never-seen-higher-demand-for-a-smartphone/">&#8220;Sprint tells us they have never seen higher demand for a smartphone&#8221;</a> in perspective.</p>
<p>Coster’s suggestion for folks intent on buying a Pre but frustrated by the meager supply at Sprint Stores and Best Buy: Try Radio Shack, which “seems to have been neglected by eager early adopters.”</p>

<p>The Palm (PALM) Pre officially went on sale this morning, and judging from initial reports&#8211;and my experience at a local Northern California Sprint store&#8211;neither demand or supply was particularly overwhelming. Certainly, lines for the device were far shorter than those that extended from Apple (AAPL) stores for the launches of the iPhone and the iPhone 3G. </p>
<p>Arriving outside my local Sprint (S) store about an hour after they first opened, I found not a queue of eager Pre-buyers, but two kids making forts out of a few Pre shipping boxes left outside the store. Inside the store, I found a group of nine people waiting in line to add their names to a waiting list for the device, which was already sold out at this location. A Sprint rep refused to tell me how many Pres had been sold this morning, but admitted that the shipment had been a small one.</p>
<p>The situation is apparently the same across the country. The Boston Globe reports that <a href="http://www.boston.com/news/local/breaking_news/2009/06/new_smart_phone.html">Sprint&#8217;s Back Bay store sold out of its 55 Pres by 11 AM</a>. An informal survey by 24/7 Wall Street reveals <a href="http://247wallst.com/2009/06/06/palm-pre-short-supply-sell-outs-not-all-instant-palm-s-aapl-rimm-bby/">sell outs or fast-dwindling supplies of the device at Sprint and Best Buy stores in Chicago, Houston, San Francisco and Los Angeles</a>. Four of the five Best Buy stores I contacted reported selling out of the Pre very quickly; one representative told me his store had just four of the devices and he believed that to be the case at many other locations.</p>
<p>Sprint stores I spoke with in LA, Chicago and Boston told me they&#8217;d sold out by late morning.</p>
<p>Q: How many names on the list? A: &#8220;We&#8217;re not allowed to say.&#8221; A reader tells me that the line outside the W. Division Street in Chicago was at least 50 people long, and that the store started wait-listing people somewhere around #36. Another reader reports a line of about 20 people outside an Emeryville, CA Sprint store. That same reader claims a clerk told him the store had 60 Pres on hand. Still another reader reports that the line outside Sprint’s Market Street store in San Francisco started at 6 AM this morning. There were a dozen or so folks in line by about 7:30 AM. Finally, another reader reports that a Sprint store in San Francisco’s Castro district had a line of about 40 people when she showed up to get in line at 7 AM. That location, too, sold out quickly.</p>
<p>Four phones at the local Best Buy? Stores in Marin, LA and Chicago sold out within hours? Makes you wonder <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&#038;sid=a7H6bfrDqVPE&#038;refer=us">if Palm and Sprint are purposely constraining supply to foster an image of overwhelming demand</a>.</p>

<p>&#8220;We believe Wal-Mart is actively pitching Apple to carry more products,&#8221; Reitzes said in a research note this morning. &#8220;With Wal-Mart improving its retail displays, we believe that the mega-retailer could eventually earn the right to sell select Mac products without diluting Apple’s brand&#8230;.Apple is very particular and exclusive with who sells its Macs and any &#8216;Mac experiment&#8217; with Wal-Mart would likely start very gradually via a pilot program at first&#8211;just like Mac sales started at Best Buy&#8230;.While we don’t expect an immediate impact this year and believe Apple would need to reposition its line-up first, we believe that closer ties to Wal-Mart makes sense.”</p>
<p>Indeed, Wal-Mart (WMT) could certainly bolster Apple’s (AAPL) distribution, particularly in areas without Apple Stores. A compelling proposition: broader access to the mass-market consumer without the infrastructure costs of a standalone boutique. And surely Apple has overcome its aversion to Wal-Mart now that the big-box retailer has been peddling its iPhones for so long.</p>

<p>Later today, Perlman&#8211;former principal scientist at Apple (AAPL) and the founder of WebTV&#8211;will officially unveil OnLive, the online service with which he hopes to upend the $46 billion world-wide videogame market. Seven years in the making, OnLive promises to create <a href="http://venturebeat.com/2009/03/23/steve-perlmans-onlive-could-turn-the-video-game-world-upside-down/">an on-demand gaming experience that rivals those offered by dedicated videogame consoles</a>. It&#8217;s capable of streaming <a href="http://kotaku.com/5181300/onlive-makes-pc-upgrades-extinct-lets-you-play-crysis-on-your-tv">even the most advanced, CPU-intensive games</a> to television and computer&#8211;Macintosh or PC&#8211;without lag or a reduction in quality. &#8220;We&#8217;re providing you with the latest high-end titles, the exact same ones you would see at Target or Best Buy, in the same release windows,&#8221; <a href="http://www.usatoday.com/tech/gaming/2009-03-24-onlive_N.htm">Perlman told USA Today</a>. &#8220;But what is really cool is you don&#8217;t need any high-end hardware to play them. There&#8217;s no physical media. It&#8217;s an all-digital platform. You never need to upgrade your equipment at home.&#8221;</p>
<p>A compelling proposition. A potentially disruptive one too, if OnLive is able to deliver it with the reliability and ease of use it promises. <a href="http://www.eetimes.com/news/semi/showArticle.jhtml?articleID=216200305">Said IDC analyst Billy Pidgeon</a>, &#8220;It&#8217;s a good idea and has potential, but the thing I need reassurance on is being able to deliver this over the network. In games there&#8217;s no wiggle room&#8211;when you press a button to fire you want to fire,&#8221; he said. &#8220;But if it works, this could be a disruptive.&#8221;</p>
