			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/11/dellephone.jpg" alt="dellephone" title="dellephone" width="200" height="200" class="alignright size-full wp-image-28941" />After nearly three years of rumor and speculation, <a href="http://content.dell.com/us/en/corp/d/press-releases/2009-11-13-dell-confirms-smart-phone-plans.aspx?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=gen">Dell is finally entering the smartphone market</a>&#8211;in China and Brazil. Later this month, China Mobile and Brazil’s Claro will begin selling the company’s Mini 3, a handset designed around Google&#8217;s (GOOG) Android mobile operating system. </p>
<p>Why China and Brazil? Well, for one thing, they are developing markets. For another, Dell (DELL) already has partners there. </p>
<p>&#8220;Besides size (China Mobile has over 500 million subscribers, and Claro serves more than 42 million), we have existing telecom partnerships with them,&#8221; Dell blogger Lionel Menchaca said in a post. &#8220;Back in April, we were the first to embed China Mobile’s technology into our Mini 10 netbook. And if you’ve been watching, you know Dell has agreements with lots of other providers like Vodafone in Europe, Australia and New Zealand. We’ve partnered with AT&#038;T and Verizon in the United States to offer mobile broadband on different products, and we have agreements with other carriers in Asia.&#8221;</p>
<p>Interesting. Presumably this means we’ll see the Mini rolled out in short order in these other countries as well. As you may recall, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091007/dellephone-headed-to-att/">Dell was rumored to be building an Android handset for AT&#038;T (T) in early October</a>.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><img src="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/files/2009/10/steve_moneybags.jpg" alt="steve_moneybags" title="steve_moneybags" width="350" height="233" class="aligncenter size-full wp-image-26894" />Apple’s September quarter saw, among other things, the release of <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/tag/snow-leopard/">Snow Leopard</a>, the latest upgrade to its OS X operating system and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090909/live-from-apples-lets-rock-event-10-am-pdt/">the first public appearance of CEO Steve Jobs</a>, who’d been on a medical leave of absence for a liver transplant. It was also the first full period since the company launched the iPhone 3GS, in late June. </p>
<p>No wonder it was a blowout quarter.</p>
<p>After market close Monday, <a href="http://www.apple.com/pr/library/2009/10/19results.html">Apple reported a fiscal fourth-quarter profit of $1.67 billion</a>, or $1.82 a share, on revenue of $9.87 billion. That topped the estimates of analysts surveyed by Thomson Reuters, who&#8217;d expected the company to earn $1.42 a share on revenue of $9.2 billion.</p>
<p>The company sold 3.05 million Macs during the quarter, a 17 percent increase over last year. It sold 10.2 million iPods, an eight percent decline from the year-ago quarter. </p>
<p>And iPhones? Apple (AAPL) sold 7.4 million of those&#8211;seven percent more than during the same period last year. So much for those <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20091016/apple-earns-iphone-supply/">supply-chain issues that some analysts warned might undermine iPhone sales</a>.</p>
<p>&#8220;We are thrilled to have sold more Macs and iPhones than in any previous quarter,&#8221; said CEO Jobs. <em>&#8220;We’ve got a very strong lineup for the holiday season and some really great new products in the pipeline for 2010.&#8221;</em> [Editor's Note: "...really great new products"--is that code for a tablet?]</p>
<p>Apple shares, which closed at $189.86 today, are spiking as I write this. At $203.90, they&#8217;re up more than seven percent in extended trading.</p>
<p>Looking ahead to its fiscal first quarter, Apple estimates it will earn between $1.70 and $1.78 a share on revenue in a range of $11.3 billion to $11.6 billion. That’s comically lower than the $1.91 a share on $11.45 billion in sales that analysts are forecasting. But as today’s results clearly demonstrate, Apple subscribes to the underpromise-and-over-deliver school of guidance theory, so there’s likely little cause for concern.</p>
<p>So, to recap: Apple sold more Macs and more iPhones than in any previous quarter in the company’s history. Before the holiday quarter. And in midst of the worst economy we’ve seen in 50 years.</p>
<p><b>Notes From the Earnings Call:</b></p>
<ul>
<li>Apple COO Tim Cook and CFO Peter Oppenheimer are handling the earnings call. CEO Steve Jobs will not be attending.</li>
<li>Oppenheimer says this was Apple’s second-highest quarterly revenue ever. Highest-ever operating margin. &#8220;We are thrilled with these record-breaking results, particularly given the economic environment around us.&#8221; <em>Obviously</em>.</li>
<li> Macs are showing &#8220;fantastic momentum,&#8221; says Oppenheimer. Sales have outpaced the market in 19 of the past 20 quarters. Quarterly sales were up 17 percent; portable sales, 35 percent. Interesting: 42 percent growth in Asia.</li>
<li>Moving on to iPods: Sales were down to 10.2 million from 11 million a year ago. But iPod touch sales doubled. MP3 market share in the U.S. is now more than 70 percent (according to NPD, I think).</li>
<li> iPhone sales were up seven percent. Apple will begin selling iPhones in China later this month. More than 85,000 apps in App Store. Two billion downloads.</li>
<li>Apple opened 15 new stores during the quarter. Now has 273. Will soon open first two stores in France, including one at the Louvre.</li>
<li>Moving on to the Q&#038;A. Asked about those iPhone 3GS supply issues I mentioned earlier, Cook acknowledges that demand did outstrip supply in a number of countries. But the situation improved &#8220;markedly&#8221; in September. How are things looking for China? Cook: &#8220;I would have liked to have had more, honestly, because we were still short in some countries at the end of the quarter.&#8221;</li>
<li> Apple is obviously very excited about the iPhone’s impending debut in China. &#8220;There’s a good opportunity, and we’re really excited to get started,&#8221; says Cook. &#8220;It’s the largest market in the world in terms of total phones.&#8221;</li>
<li>No comment on the broader economy. &#8220;We just spend our time projecting our business and leave the economy to the economists.”</li>
<li>Does Apple worry about iPhone rivals? Android? Not really, says Cook. &#8220;We feel very good about suiting up and competing against anyone.&#8221; Our competitors are still trying to catch up with the first iPhone, he adds.</li>
<li>Snow Leopard? Cook says the company&#8217;s been &#8220;pleasantly surprised&#8221; by sales of Apple&#8217;s latest OS.</li>
<li>How does Apple benefit from carrier-exclusivity iPhone deals? Cook says carriers with exclusivity deals are willing to invest more in the platform and that means greater innovation. Visual voicemail is an example of that. That said, he adds, &#8220;We’ve found no lack of people wanting to sell iPhones, frankly.&#8221; </li>
<li> International store revenue up more than 20 percent, on average.</li>
<li> More on iPhone supply issues. Cook insists this is not a component issue, though he notes that silicon can sometimes be hard to get. &#8220;We feel good about our position now.&#8221;</li>
<li>And still more on iPhone supply issues: How many iPhones would Apple have sold if it had an adequate supply? Impossible to say, really, Cook says, adding that 3GS units were in short supply virtually everywhere in September.</li>
<li>Enterprise demand for the iPhone is very strong. It’s either being deployed or already in use at some 50 percent of Fortune 100 companies. Same with Europe and the FT 100. Widely used in higher ed and government as well.</li>
<li>But perhaps not widely enough. Asked about institutional sales,  Cook says Apple isn’t seeing much stimulus funding. The company&#8217;s worried about state spending. Says Cook, &#8220;We may see more this quarter, but it’s too early to tell.&#8221; </li>

<p>How&#8217;s <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=5872">September of 2009</a> sound?  Because China Business Network claims that <a href="http://news.alibaba.com/article/detail/technology/100138342-1-iphone-expected-enter-china-market.html">China Unicom and Apple have finally inked a deal</a> that will bring the iPhone to the country around that time. </p>
<p>Manufactured by Foxconn, the Chinese version of the iconic handset will reportedly be identical to the original in all features save one: To comply with the demands of China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20090710/apple-to-bring-wifi-free-iphone-to-china-three-months-early/">the Chinese version of the iPhone will lack Wi-Fi support</a>. </p>
<p>Why would people pay retail for a defeatured iPhone when they could buy the real thing on the country&#8217;s flourishing gray market? Well, for one thing, Wi-Fi-enabled iPhones are pricey&#8211;$695 for the 16GB model, $811 for the 32GB version. For another, they might not perceive Wi-Fi as a necessity,  <a href="http://iphonasia.com/?p=5879">as Dan Butterfield notes over at iPhonAsia</a>. </p>
<p>&#8220;While some consumers in China may prefer grey-market iPhones with WiFi, there are many millions that have never used WiFi on their phones and have only experienced 2G speeds,&#8221; Butterfield explains. &#8220;For this group, WiFi might be a less important feature. They may be more interested in iPhone’s enjoyable user-experience, entertainment value and status.&#8221; </p>
<p>Either way, defeatured or not, Apple (AAPL) benefits. &#8220;For China’s most tech-savvy power-consumers, WiFi will be important,&#8221; says Butterfield. &#8220;As a result, I suspect smuggling of WiFi-enabled iPhones will continue to be a profitable enterprise. Apple will be a prime beneficiary as grey-marketers will continue to acquire full-price WiFi enabled iPhones in Hong Kong&#8230;.</p>
<p>&#8220;Using conservative estimates,&#8221; Butterfield continues, &#8220;I believe Apple can capture a full 2% share of the wireless market in China within the first 12 months of an official iPhone launch. That’s 14 million iPhones and perhaps another 2 million or so coming via grey-market iPhone sales.”</p>

Because here we are, well over a year later, and Apple still hasn’t managed to officially launch the iPhone to China. </p>
<p>But it’s getting closer. </p>
<p>Interfax reports that Apple (AAPL) is <a href="http://www.fiercemobilecontent.com/story/apple-inching-closer-chinese-iphone-deal/2009-06-12">near to obtaining the Network Access License</a> from the  Ministry of Industry and Information Technology that would allow the iPhone to be sold in the country. Once the license is secured, Apple needs only to finalize a distribution deal with China Unicom to make good on Cook’s promise, though that has proven problematic. </p>
<p>Apple’s discussions with China Unicom have reportedly been troubled by the company’s distaste for the idea of China Unicom preinstalling non-Apple software&#8211;a media player other than iTunes, for example&#8211;on its iconic handset. That said, Apple is apparently confident enough in a positive outcome that it’s begun staffing up for a launch. Last week the company posted an ad to its recruitment Web site looking for <a href="http://www.jlmpacificepoch.com/newsstories?id=150144_0_5_0_M">someone to oversee “iPhone training” across Asia</a>. The position, which will be based out of Beijing, is responsible for designing training programs for iPhone sales teams and retail channels partners. </p>

<p>Looks like Yahoo has found its new CFO. This afternoon, the company said that Tim Morse will take charge of its finances. Morse, who has served as chief financial officer for chip maker Altera (ALTR) since 2007 and spent 15 years at GE (GE) before that, will start work on June 17 and assume CFO responsibilities on July 1. </p>
<p>Welcome news, since Yahoo has been looking to fill the position since <a href="http://mediamemo.allthingsd.com/20090226/yahoo-cfo-blake-jorgensen-out-in-reorg/">Blake Jorgensen said he would step down from the Silicon Valley-based company last February</a>. </p>
<p>What did it take to bring Morse to Yahoo? According to <a href="http://yhoo.client.shareholder.com/secfiling.cfm?filingid=1193125-09-129383">an SEC filing</a>, a $500,000 signing bonus, a base salary of $500,000,  an option to purchase 400,000 shares of Yahoo stock, and 150,000 shares of restricted stock.</p>
<p>The appointment of Morse is yet another for Yahoo CEO Carol Bartz, who has tended to pick her top execs from a more business-focused sector than one focused on the consumer Internet, which is Yahoo&#8217;s arena.</p>

<p>Morse has financial experience in both large and small organizations, managing in complex, fast-paced environments and establishing scalable, cost-effective processes and controls. Prior to joining Yahoo!, he was the CFO of Altera Corporation, a semiconductor company specializing in programmable logic devices for communications, industrial, and consumer applications. Morse previously served as the CFO and general manager of business development for General Electric Plastics. A 15 year veteran of GE, he also held a variety of positions at GE Plastics, GE Appliances and GE Capital in North America, Europe and Asia.</p>
<p>“Yahoo! is an amazing brand with a unique combination of assets, and I am extremely excited to be joining a finance team with a deep commitment to financial excellence and fiscal discipline,” said Morse. “I look forward to working with the entire leadership team to continue to focus on driving results and creating value for our shareholders.”</p>

It exists, but it <a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/apple-tablet-in-2010-2009-5">probably won’t ship until 2010</a>. This according to <a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=18529">Piper Jaffray analyst Gene Munster</a>, who offers up a heaping pile of grist for the Apple (AAPL) rumor mill in a new research note today. </p>
<p>“Between indications from our component contacts in Asia, recent patents relating to multi-touch sensitivity for more complex computing devices, comments from Tim Cook on the April 22nd conference call, and Apple’s acquisition of P.A. Semi along with other recent chip-related hires, it is increasingly clear that Apple is investing more in its mobile computing franchise,” he writes. “Specifically, we expect this to result in a larger (7″-10″) touchscreen tablet that will launch in 1H CY10. Additionally, Apple’s consistent message that it refuses to launch a &#8216;cheap&#8217; portable netbook, and its desire to differentiate itself in a maturing market before it’s too late, plus its gradual addition of multi-touch technology to all of its core products (iPhones, iPods and Macs) leads us to conclude this product will be a touchscreen tablet.”</p>
<p>Munster theorizes that the device will use a third version of Mac OS X to offer a sort of middle ground between the iPod touch and the MacBook. &#8220;The device&#8217;s OS could bear a close resemblance to Apple&#8217;s iPhone OS and run App Store apps,&#8221; he wrote. &#8220;Key apps, like Safari and Mail, could make use of the larger screen resolution, making Apple&#8217;s tablet appealing for more extended use, but the company could continue to leverage its primary asset in mobile computing, the App Store, in this scenario.&#8221; </p>
<p>The design of that OS, however, has been time-consuming and will keep the device from market until the first half of next year. &#8220;We expect the development of such an OS to be underway currently,&#8221; Munster says, &#8220;but its complexity, along with our conversations with a key company in the mobile space, leads us to believe it will not launch until CY10.&#8221; </p>

<p>If the Web has a single point of failure, you’d think it was Google, given the outcry over the the outages suffered by some of the company’s services Thursday. Something went wrong this morning and whatever it was had <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-10240875-93.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0">widespread effects on a broad spectrum of Google services</a>&#8211;<a href="http://blogs.zdnet.com/BTL/?p=18064">Google Search, Gmail, YouTube, Google News, Blogger, Google Analytics, Google Docs</a>. It <a href="http://search.twitter.com/search?q=%23GoogleFail">outraged Twitter users</a> and provided Microsoft&#8217;s (MSFT) Live Search team with no end of amusement. “Sympathies to the Google servers. Happens to everyone. But this is why the world needs more than one search engine,&#8221; it quipped in a tweet. </p>
<p>The source of the disruption? A system error that sent a bunch of Google (GOOG) Web traffic to Asia and waylaid about 14 percent of it, apparently. </p>

And a bunch of other planes were sent that way too, so your flight was backed up and your journey took much longer than expected. That&#8217;s basically what happened to some of our users today for about an hour, starting at 7:48 am Pacific time.</p>
<p>An error in one of our systems caused us to direct some of our web traffic through Asia, which created a traffic jam. As a result, about 14% of our users experienced slow services or even interruptions. We&#8217;ve been working hard to make our services ultrafast and &#8216;always on,&#8217; so it&#8217;s especially embarrassing when a glitch like this one happens. We&#8217;re very sorry that it happened, and you can be sure that we&#8217;ll be working even harder to make sure that a similar problem won&#8217;t happen again. All planes are back on schedule now.&#8221;

<p>If Apple is indeed preparing to <a href="http://www.macworld.co.uk/mac/news/index.cfm?NewsID=25511">offer the iPhone 3G in China in partnership with China Unicom</a>, its sales prospects are looking pretty damn good. Bank of America analyst Scott Craig believes the company could claim as much as a fifth of the smartphone market in China when it launches the device there&#8211;and in relatively short order. “Our Asia supply chain checks seem to indicate that Apple believes it can achieve an initial penetration rate, least on a sell-in basis, similar to the iPhone launch in the U.S. (about 20 percent),” Craig wrote in a recent research note. “In fact, given our channel checks in Asia, Apple likely believes it can easily meet (and likely exceed) this and/or believes in other scenarios that result in much higher unit sales levels.”</p>
<p>Craig estimates that Apple (AAPL) can sell 1.5 million iPhones in China in calendar 2009, assuming a midyear release and a price-point of $500-$600. He sees the company selling a further 4.6 million in calendar 2010, and 5.8 million in calendar 2011. That&#8217;s a hell of a lot of iPhones. But given<a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080926/is-the-victorian-mourning-garb-really-necessary-steve-hong-kongs-pretty-warm-this-time-of-year/"> the strong gray market interest</a> in China already and the fact that China Unicom&#8217;s customer base at 150 million is roughly twice the size of AT&#038;T Wireless, it doesn&#8217;t seem like all that much of a stretch.</p>

According to Goldman Sachs, anyway. This morning Goldman Sachs analyst David Bailey <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601087&amp;sid=asz.tfA4wL00&amp;refer=home">downgraded Apple&#8217;s stock to neutral from a buy</a>, claiming the company will suffer when consumers continue to rein in spending next year. &#8220;Although our checks in Asia for the December quarter were better for Apple than for the other PC and smartphone vendors, some nicks have started to emerge,&#8221; Bailey wrote. &#8220;Specifically, shipments of MacBooks, iPod nanos, and iPhone were all slightly lower than what was expected going into the quarter and Apple should face a tougher environment in the March and June quarters as consumer demand takes another leg down.&#8221; </p>
<p>A disheartening prediction. And to make matters worse, Bailey speculates that Apple (AAPL) won&#8217;t unveil any new product categories at MacWorld come January, and because of that won&#8217;t see the sort of near-term pop it typically experiences after the introduction of a compelling new product. Said Bailey, &#8220;[The] nearer-term outlook is less positive, as it now looks unlikely that Apple will launch a new product category at MacWorld in early January, taking away a potential catalyst for the shares and causing Apple to try to generate demand in a tough environment without the benefit of a new offering in the first part of 2009.&#8221;</p>
<p><a href="http://finance.google.com/finance?q=AAPL">Apple shares</a> closed at $94.75, down 3.58 percent for the day on the news.</p>

Shares in the company <a href="http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601103&amp;sid=aIamf2ks__E4&amp;refer=us">fell to their lowest point in seven years</a> Tuesday after <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB122156560342042887.html">Dell warned of  a slowdown in investment technology spending</a> in the U.S. and abroad.</p>
<p>&#8220;When Dell announced Q2 financial results on Aug. 28, 2008, it reported continued conservatism in IT spending in the U.S., which had extended into Western Europe and several countries in Asia,&#8221; <a href="http://www.dell.com/content/topics/global.aspx/corp/pressoffice/en/2008/2008_09_16_rr_000?c=us&amp;l=en&amp;s=corp">the company said in a statement</a>. &#8220;The company is seeing further softening in global end-user demand in the current quarter.&#8221;</p>
<p>Translation: If you thought Q2 was lousy, wait until you see our Q3.</p>
<p>Coming as it does after a second quarter in which Dell (DELL) reported a 17 percent drop in earnings and <a href="http://digitaldaily.allthingsd.com/20080905/course-you-could-just-shut-the-company-down-and-give-the-money-back-to-the-shareholders/">announced plans to sell off its factories</a>, the warning doesn&#8217;t bode at all well for the company&#8217;s next round of financials. Said Bill Kreher, a securities analyst with Edward Jones, &#8220;The company&#8217;s inconsistent performance and lack of confidence means there&#8217;s a lot of uncertainty in the turnaround.&#8221;</p>

In <a href="http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/080805/aqtu006.html">a statement proclaiming itself the No. 1 social network in Asia this morning</a>, Friendster named Richard Kimber, Google’s Managing Director of Sales and Operations for South East Asia,  as CEO. The company also said it has raised $20 million in new venture funding from DG Ventures, Kleiner Perkins Caufield &#038; Byers, Benchmark Capital, DAG Ventures, and the Founders Fund. Friendster plans to use that money to <a href="http://online.wsj.com/article/SB121790017932212287.html">hire up and bolster its presence across Asia, specifically Singapore, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia.</a></p>
<p>Perhaps, we&#8217;ll see that <a href="http://blogs.siliconvalley.com/gmsv/2005/03/friendster_the_.html">Friendster movie</a> yet&#8211;though I still can&#8217;t imagine a worse concept.  </p>
