MacBook Pro Selling Well at Amazon and Best Buy

steve_boomApple has long been a subscriber to the underpromise-and-over-deliver school of guidance theory, so it’s not unusual to see research houses raising their guidance on the company in advance of its fourth-quarter financials. Among those doing so today: Morgan Keegan, whose Tavis McCourt says the June refresh of the MacBook Pro line and the recent launch of Snow Leopard have juiced sales at Amazon and Best Buy.

Chinese iPhone Sales “Disappointing,” Perhaps Because iPhone Not Yet on Sale in China

dunce“Sales of iPhone through China Unicom, to state it mildly, have been disappointing. Volumes since launch have run at a fraction of stated goals.” So says Northeast Securities analyst Ashok Kumar, who, in a research note to investors this morning, warned that Chinese sales of the iconic handset are not nearly as good as expected. Which I suppose makes perfect sense because the iPhone hasn’t yet gone on sale in China.

AT&T Still Working on iPhone Tethering

no-tetheringLooks like tethering on Apple’s iPhone is still a matter of “when and not if,” as AT&T likes to say. Though the carrier’s decision to allow Internet telephony apps on its 3G network has lead some to speculate that the company will soon allow data tethering as well, that’s not the case. Evidently, there’s still a while to wait until AT&T supports that long-promised feature.

85 Percent of Mac Switchers Forgot to Toss Windows PC

Apple Challenges Woolworths Over Logo Similarities

apple_woolworthsthumbWoolworths Supermarkets describes its new logo as “an abstract leaf symbol” intended to represent fresh food. But to Apple, the stylized “W” looks far too much like its own namesake fruit, which could be problematic should the supermarket chain someday decide to peddle its own brand of consumer electronics. And so Apple is petitioning IP Australia, the local agency that governs trademarks, to reject the Woolworths application for the mark.

Apple FCC Docs Hint at iMac Refresh

Last week we heard rumors that some new all-in-one, dual-core desktops were already rolling off the assembly lines of Apple’s manufacturing partners. Now comes word of Federal Communications Commission filings that confirm the existence of the new wireless mouse and keyboard that might be paired with them.

Morgan Stanley: iPhone Market Share Would Double Without Exclusivity

jobsingotphoneAdd Morgan Stanley’s Kathryn Huberty to the list of analysts calling for Apple to broaden the iPhone’s distribution by ending carrier exclusivity deals. In a research note issued this morning, Huberty–noting that the iPhone’s market share grew 136 percent in France when Apple switched to multicarrier agreements there–said iPhone sales could more than double if the company took a similar tack in other countries.

O2 Suffers iPhone Drought

o2-iphone-ukWell this certainly doesn’t bode well for O2: The U.K. wireless carrier, which has reportedly been selling about 2,200 iPhones a day since it secured exclusive distribution rights to the device in 2007, has run out of the 3GS model. Extremely high levels of demand have emptied not just the company’s physical retail outlets, but its online store as well.
