Facebook’s virtual gift market may turn out to be the best holiday shopping option for employees hoping to cash out some of their shares. On Thursday, the company postponed a program that would have allowed employees to sell up to 20 percent of their vested shares.

Top of the Apps
Since its July debut, some 10,000 iPhone applications have been released to Apple’s App Store and 9,887 of them are still available for purchase. 10,000 apps. An impressively broad ecosystem for just under five months of development. Apple’s year-end list of Top App Store Downloads for 2008, then, is both handy and timely.

BREAKING: Facebook May or May Not Launch Music Service
Looks like Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg is suffering from a bit of Freudian MySpace Envy. Now that the rival social network has launched what MySpace CEO Chris Wolfe likes to describe as “a mega-music experience,” Facebook is said to be looking for a foothold in the digital music business as well.
What Was That You Were Saying About Growth Over Profits?
Good thing Facebook is committed to growth over profits because according to the latest metrics from Hitwise Intelligence, growth is slowing. While traffic in the United Kingdom to the site did increase by 4 percent between August and September this year, it’s down from 50 percent over the same period last year.
Facebook and the “Duke Nukem Forever” of Business Models
Microsoft must be so proud. The company’s $240 million investment in Facebook, one that implicitly valued the social network at $15 billion, hasn’t yet paid off. But it will. In three years or so when Facebook finally settles on a business model. Assuming, of course, it’s a viable one.

Time to Poach a Few More Googlers, Eh, Mark?
Facebook manager Justin Rosenstein once described the social network as “the Google of yesterday, the Microsoft of long ago.” Today, Rosenstein perhaps views it as the Facebook of So Totally Last Week, because he’s leaving the company, along with departing Facebook co-founder Dustin Moskovitz.

Weekend Update, 10/03/08
The week ending Oct. 3, 2008 was a momentous one, and not solely because of ongoing McCain-Obama high jinks like Tina Fey’s encore as Sarah Palin on “Saturday Night Live” or the one and only Web site where you can decide the race in a Kung-Fu Election.
- First and foremost, this week’s big slide on Wall Street hit tech stocks with a vengeance, too, disproving Google CEO Eric Schmidt’s assertion a little more than a week ago: “My guess is that the drama is New York and not here.” Ouch. But don’t say BoomTown didn’t warn you.
- Ted Ullyot, Facebook’s new general counsel, has “strong ties to the Republican Party.” Including a stint in former U.S. Attorney General Alberto Gonzales’s office, where, as chief of staff, he handled the government’s response to the the leak of CIA operative Valerie Plame’s indentity. “Ted’s arrival demonstrates we’re a little more grown up.” No word on whether or not you need to change your status immediately.”

Drunk, Stupid and On Facebook Is No Way to Go Through Life, Son
The best thing about social networks is also the worst thing about social networks: They make it easy for us to share information about ourselves. Of course, by making that information easier to share with friends and colleagues, social networks are also making it easier to share with less “social” entities. Among those are hiring managers, who are increasingly surfing social-networking sites for background info on job candidates.
