Thanks, iPhone: 2,000 Percent Increase in Bay Area Data Traffic Since 2008, Says AT&T

att_iphoneBay Area iPhone users, relief is on the way: This morning, AT&T said it has almost completed a $65 million upgrade to its network in the region. The carrier has upgraded close to 850 cell sites in an effort to better handle the massive surge in data traffic it has seen in and around San Francisco since the debut of Apple’s iPhone.

Make no mistake, that surge has been massive. Says AT&T (T): “Since 2008 AT&T’s network in the San Francisco area has experienced a 3G data traffic increase of 2,000 percent.”

Wow. No wonder my calls kept dropping at that last Apple (AAPL) event in San Francisco (yes, an iPhone 3G repeatedly dropping calls at Apple’s Sept. invitation-only music gathering). In any event, the upgrade, which includes the bolstering of backbone infrastructure, should result in better coverage, 3G performance and in-building penetration.

“More than ever before, customers look to wireless communications to stay in touch with family, friends and business colleagues,” said Terry Stenzel, AT&T vice president and general manager for Northern California/Reno. “The additional spectrum helps to enhance the 3G network so that our customers have the best experience when they make a call, check an e-mail, download a video or song, access applications or surf the Internet on their AT&T device.”

Here in Sillycon Valley, AT&T 3G coverage sucks big time. I am not talking about metro San Francisco at the end of the Peninsula, I am talking about the South Bay including San Jose, Santa Clara, Los Gatos, Campbell, and other cities on the Peninsula including Cupertino and Palo Alto.

For AT&T to claim the "best" in 3G coverage, there should be better coverage in Sillycon Valley centered in the South Bay and including the East Bay, Peninsula, and North Bay.

Results on Santa Clara VTA light rail, CalTrans Rail, Altamont Express Rail, Amtrak Rail, BART light rail, and every SF Bay County bus service as a rider has been less than impressive!

It is clear that the incredible success of the iPhone has come at a price - an exponential increase in demand on the carriers' data networks. Although there is gloating taking place at the other carriers, especially Verizon, they should take heed as the AT&T situation is clearly showing what the future looks like for data demand and that their competitors networks will suffer the same fate / problems at some point in time.

Verizon just now launched their very first phone with a desktop class Web browser (Droid) and it has a 5GB per month cap. So Verizon is 3 years at least behind AT&T in providing PC-like data to phone users.
