I tried out the PowerPoint web app for the first time about a week ago. Good fidelity to the Office client experience, and while it wasn't as rich in features I found you could still do quite a bit. A nice viewing/reading, and slideshow experience, as well.

To see some screenshots of the PowerPoint Web App, take a look at this slideshare presentation (created with the PowerPoint Web App): http://www.slideshare.net/johnmullinax/my-first-presentation-using-office-web-apps

These are not Web apps. They require a Windows client. All that's happened is the apps have moved from Win32 API to MSHTML API. You cannot run these on a system with standard HTML 5 API.

But WAIT!

Ohhh, the privacy issues.

How can I trust Microsoft with all my data!

As an old joke ends: "We know what you are my dear, what remains is to negotiate a price."

I look forward to trying OfficeLive, or whatever it's called on my Linux/Firefox system. What you want to bet when you save a Word file from the web-based system it only saves in a format that the very latest version of Word can read?

Also from watching some demos it appears it will be slow, in some cases even on the very fastest new computers. Maybe in fact they could use a new slimmed down OS to make it run at all, ehh?

Google could of course distribute such a thing on those Yellow pizza boxes. That must certainly be in their pipeline somewhere.

The question, when both products are actually fielded, will be, as mentioned above, price.

I'm fairly certain when all is said and done the TCO for the MS product will be higher, or if not, it will become another open wound in Microsoft's product line-up.
