There are still free online versions of traditional encyclopedias.

I think Project Gutenberg is in the process of digitizing (slowly) some old ones that are out of copyright.

My recollection is that Encarta was started from the bones of the old Funk and Wagonels.

A good thing MS could do would be to donate either Encarta or the old materials from which it is based to the public.

For some things the latest info is best, for other things a vintage 1950 viewpoint might be good enough, or in fact better.

Considering my co-workers could access Encarta, but my Mac-using ways didn’t allow for me the same luxury, I’m not too sorry. Also considering we went from 2 to 16 Mac users in our department of 18, that means very little to us now anyway.

It’s just too bad Wikipedia is filled with petty nonsense and people with less than honorable intentions making entries, modifications and personal attacks on people.
