I am the proud owner of not one, but two Nokia Internet Tablets. The phone, that isn't a phone. It has a camera, plays music, one version has an FM radio built in, the other a GPS chip. The radio wasn't officially documented at first, the GPS chip doesn't seem to work very well, but it has everything necessary to be an iPhone competitor, except the circuitry to connect to a cell tower.

What were they thinking? Or were they?

Like Motorola, with big leads, and only competing with one another, they both figured they could bide their time and watch the other big dogs and play gotcha with product announcements. None of these companies were ready for the iPhone and they seem no closer to being ready now.

When will these companies learn that it isn't enough to be slightly ahead of the pack? Or maybe it's too late for these companies to learn anything. Having failed Tech Leadership 101, I'd advise them all to jump on the Android bandwagon and work on waterproof designs, larger or smaller keyboards and other superficial ways to differentiate themselves (which seems like what they are good at).
